The African National Congress Youth League (ANCYL) in the Greater KwaDukuza Region is in full support of the protracted strike against Intertoll, which is a tolling company that is contracted to operate in the Mvoti Toll Plaza on the N2 in Groutville, KwaDukuza. “The ANCYL stands in solidarity with tollbooth workers and calls on all interest groups to join its course in condemning the exploitation of young black locals who only occupy junior positions in that institution. The company offers a salary that is way below the living wage and yet it continues to enjoy the profits it generates from the public. We are also concerned by the way that the

company is approaching this issue, their arrogance and condescension towards their own staff,” said the ANCYL in a statement. The Youth League said that Intertoll “has categorically proven to the fullest extent that it has no interest in the welfare of its black workers and as the ANCYL, we cannot stand idly by when this company continues to suck the blood of our brothers and sisters while they make huge profits out of the tolling system.” “True to our conviction, we also applaud the workers and members of the community who have helped intensify the fight against Intertoll. As we stand united and in solidarity with the tollbooth workers, we

are of the view that such action is long over-due and necessary for the prevalence of justice. We believe that black people have a right to act against exploitation and they must fight for self-determination just like how our fore-father fought against the oppressive government. The company has failed its own people and we are calling on the intervention of SANRAL and the Department of Transport to ensure that the employees are compensated in terms of the minimum wage. “We also appreciate the fact that the strike has far-reaching implications to the company and workers should only resume work once an amicable solution is reached. On that note, the ANCYL is further calling on all those who believe in justice and the emancipation of young people to act against this shameless abuse of local people.”

HONORED: Female entrepreneur receiving an award

By Xpress Reporter

Organisers of Life Changers Awards hosted a gala dinner to honour those who have made significant contributions to

society. Life Changers are growing very fast and they get better each and every year. Mr Phathabakhe Shezi seemed delighted by the support he has received from various

businessmen and the support of the community as a whole. The Gala dinner was held at KwaDukuza Town Hall on Friday evening. Youth who have started their own businesses to make a living and to change the lives of those around them were honoured. During his welcome speech, Shezi thanked the crowd for the support. “Thank you all for the support and none of this would be possible without the support I get from my sponsors. Appreciate it. We do this to encourage young people to strive for greatness,” said Shezi Guest speaker, Mandla Manzini left the crowd on their feet after he eloquently delivered his speech. Manzini urged the youth to become better than their parents and stated that there's no easy way to success. “We are shaped by our background, we are all going

through rough patches but we don't give up. It saddens me to see young people give up when they encounter obstacles on their journey. You cannot create wealth overnight, negative mentality won't give you positive results,” said Manzini. Iconic Maskandi artist Buselaphi famously known as 'Indlovukazi Kamaskandi' was also honoured at the event, she received the Life Time Achievement Award. Winners: Vuyani Nsweli, Mzwandile Ndlela (Community Impact Award), Mandeni Praise, Boys with v o i c e s , Qhoshangokwenzakwakhe Sibisi, Amathembu Amahle ( S h a n i n g S t a r Aw a r d ) , Siyabonga Khoza, Sizwe Buthelezi (Male Entrepreneur A w a r d ) , Vu s i M h l o n g o (Trendancy Award), Zandi Gcabashe, Ningi Mhlongo (Female entrepreneur Award), Mrs Khuzwayo (Above and Beyond Recognition award), Dr Sthembu Mhlanga (Spontaneous Award) Pastor Mkhize (Community Impact Award)

policies. Young people have a huge task ahead and in the end, we must walk out of this forum, proud of our contributions,” added the Mayor. Mthembu concluded by appealing to the youth to be united and work hand in hand with the Municipality. The Youth Development Report compiled by KwaDukuza Municipality showed that 30, 8% of the local youth remains unemployed and the overall unemployment rate is 25% while the youth comprises of 68.4% of the total population. Speaking to the delegates, Chairperson of the Youth & Gender Portfolio Committee, Cllr. John Phahla mentioned that as the Municipality they are waged towards cutting the gap of imbalance. “We need to divert the focus of our youth by crafting an economic development plan that will best serve the interests of the current majority in terms of job creation and entrepreneurship. The work of this summit will help build on this ideal” said Phahla. On day two of the summit KwaDukuza Municipality Speaker, Phumlile Zulu showed the delegates that there's light at the end of the tunnel. “In this occasion, we are here as ambassadors who are entrusted with the responsibility to lead and represent the interests of young people. Let's treat this platform seriously,” she said.

Mthembu began his speech by paying tribute to the late Preva Khumalo. “This auspicious event is a reflection of Preva Khumalo who is the founding father of the KwaDukuza Youth Affairs Portfolio Committee. His legacy is measured by the success of the Youth and Gender Portfolio Committee which laid the foundation for this summit. We therefore use this occasion to reflect on the work of Khumalo and learn from his legacy just like how we have learned from former President, Nelson Mandela. His contributions were part of a bigger project and his name is recorded in the history books of council. This summit is therefore a fitting tribute to his legacy for the outstanding contribution to youth development,” he said. The Mayor acknowledged that the youth of KwaDukuza possess various skills but they need to work as a collective to hone their skills. “The biggest issues affecting young people is the lack of employment. Black young people remain at the coal-face of unemployment and further victimized by a lack of skills due to the oppressive policies of the past. Glenhills residents frustrated By Xpress Reporter

IRATE: Residents of Glenhills staged a protest outside the home of Ward 13 Councillor, Rabi Singh after “11 days of water disruptions”

Residents of Glenhills have once again expressed their frustration as they continue to experience what is described as “never ending” water woes. Community members staged a protest outside the home of Ward 13 councillor, Rabi Singh. According to the Glenhills and District Civic Association Chairperson, Mr Rishi Pooran, the protest was called on behalf of the community after 11 days of water disruptions. Pooran said that the community decided to meet at the resource centre in Glenhills, but were stopped as the security guard was allegedly instructed by Councillor Singh to refrain from opening the gates. About 50 residents then proceeded to Singh's home in ward 19. “When we got there, we parked away from his property. He was not home. Protestors then burned a tyre. There was no damage to property. He then arrived with security guards and didn't speak to us in a professional manner. Instead, he was vulgar,” said Pooran. He added that protestors just “wanted to get his attention so that he would finally engage

with them after 11 days of water disruptions.” “He is not engaging with the community. He hasn't called a single meeting to address issues. We haven't found him to be active in getting tankers to all houses. During the protest, there was no intimidation and no damage to property. Our members did not retaliate to their abuse. We did not expect this from someone who is entrusted to serve us at council.” Attempts to contact Councillor Rabi Singh for a comment were unsuccessful at the time of going to press. Residents in various areas of KwaDukuza have taken to social media to express their disappointment regarding constant water issues. Last week, the Xpress Times was contacted by a furious resident of Townview, who said that they had no water for three days, including Human Rights Day. The resident, who wished to remain anonymous, claims that her attempts to contact iLembe were fruitless. “At or around 11am on Monday morning I was informed by an elderly resident of Townview that the water supply had stopped. I immediately assumed that as

usual (this has happened in the past on at least two other occasions) the water pipe on Townview road (between Saunders Street and Farland Road) had burst yet again. Not to my surprise, on my way home (Townview) on Monday, 19 March 2018 at around 5pm, the portion of road was closed off and I noticed that there was an earth-moving machine excavating the exact spot I mentioned. As usual I tried numerous times to contact the iLembe Municipality, however to no surprise there was no answer and the call rang until it cut off. On Tuesday, 20 March 2018, the road was closed again and “work” was being done on the site. The iLembe Municipality has failed to adequately, in fact completely, notify the residents of Townview and Rocky Park of the situation. I find it quite ironic and repulsive that South Africans celebrated Human Rights Day, but the residents of Townview and Rocky Park were denied their rights in terms of Section 27(1) (b) of the country's Constitution; i.e. the right to have access to water,” she said.

Launch of 3D book makes history in KwaDukuza The Naicker family of KwaDukuza made history and placed KwaDukuza and South Africa on the world stage when they published and launched the first ever 3D book in the world. The book, entitled EXPLORE SA IN 3D, is on tourism in South Africa and covers all major tourist destinations. The pictures are in 3D and is simply amazing. The book was launched at the Quartz Conference Centre in Stanger Manor. The event was graced by MEC Ravi Pillay who endorsed the book with great enthusiasm. Speaking at the launch, Tarzan Naicker said, “Credit must go to the person who initiated the idea and technology, Sanjay Raghoober. Sanjay is from Mauritius and lived in South Africa for a very long time. However circumstances forced him to return to Mauritius. Loveshan, Preveshan and I took the product to its completion and we have dedicated this book to the memory of my late son, Mikailin Naicker.” Loveshan Naicker presented an insight into the book explaining

exactly how this was done and the contents of the book. Preveshan Naicker covered the marketing and sales aspect of this book. Books will be sold to private individuals, companies, businesses, airports, hotels, B & B's, bookshops, schools, libraries, tourist junctions, curio shops, etc. “Religious organisations, sporting bodies, NGO's, NPO's etc may contact us for special prices so that they may be able to retail at their prices,” added Naicker. MEC Ravi Pillay was truly amazed with the book and congratulated the Naicker family on this innovative venture. He praised the boys stating that their initiative should be admired as this depicts true patriotism to showcase South Africa to the world. He wished them well with this venture. For enquiries regarding these books please call 032-437 8051, 073 5289266, 061 303 4459. The Xpress Times wishes to congratulate the Naicker family on this unique product and extends their best wishes for the success of this book.

Game over

A rapist who was unknown to his 32 year old victim almost got away with his hideous crime. The victim alleges that on 22 January 2017 she was on her way to visit an aunt. She met the man who dragged her to a nearby bush where he allegedly raped her. A few days later she was at a clinic receiving treatment when she spotted her attacker. Police were called and the crime scene was visited where a tissue was found. DNA results confirmed the sample was that of the rapist. Never too late A 12 year old who was allegedly raped during September 2016 was too afraid to speak out. During December she eventually told her mother after the trouble became too much to handle on her own. She reported that whilst her mother had gone to the Eastern Cape for a funeral, her step father repeatedly raped her and threatened to kill her if she spoke out. Phenomenal response to youth explosion service

Food for Life does it again

MEMORABLE: Youth are seen enjoying themselves at the Saints Cornerstone Church on Friday night

There was a phenomenal response to the Saints and BASA combined youth explosion service held at the Saints Cornerstone Church on Friday, March 23. Despite the persistent rain on Thursday and Friday, more than 500 young people packed the Saints church to capacity. Pastor Don Stephens of Pretoria and his praise and worship team set the stage for an explosive evening with rendition of songs of praise. Pastor Lucandas Isaac encouraged the young people with the Word of God touching on the important aspect of pursuing God's presence by being firmly connected with their Creator. Pastor Rajen Soobramoney of Saints said: “I want to thank those who prayed for

our youth explosion. What an awesome move of God! “In the history of any church gathering here in KwaDukuza never did such a large number of youth attend. God has been faithful. Stay blessed”. Meanwhile, the Baptist Association of South Africa (BASA) have announced a bumper Easter celebration culminating in a grand Easter Sunday service on April 1 at the KwaDukuza Town Hall commencing at 9am. Renowned inspirational speaker Dr. David Molapo is expected to draw a huge crowd at Sunday's Easter celebration at Town Hall. Through his public appearances in the media, David effectively motivates, inspires and impacts more than 5 million people in Africa each year, providing

them with the confidence and tools to change their lives, as well as those of the people around them. President of BASA, Pastor Kennedy Govender appealed to all churches in KwaDukuza to take advantage of the opportunity of listening to David and urged them to come early. The BASA Stanger Circuit will host a grand Good Friday service at the KwaDukuza Town Hall commencing at 9am. The Jehovah Shalom Baptist Church in Glenhills will lead the praise and worship followed by the Word of God by resident Pastor Rodney Kandasamy. Hot-cross buns and coffee will be served to all after the Good Friday's service. Kandasamy urged the BASA churches in the Stanger Circuit to support the event.

Volunteers braved the downpour on Saturday morning as they participated in Food for Life's "Rise to the occasion" and delivered 27 000 free meals to communities on the KZN north coast. The organisation would like to place on record their thanks to all volunteers and donors

MN 38/2018

Message from Councillor Ricardo Mthembu, KwaDukuza Municipality Mayor on the Stanger Siva Temple Hall 69th anniversary.

Easter is the celebration of the greatest sacrifice made by God, for the entire mankind. A sacrifice made, once for all, embracing everything of our past , present and future. God's desire is that not one should perish, but that all should come to salvation. The Bible says, "For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord". God has sent his Son to come and deal with the root of sin. Sin is not just what I do, but the root of sin is what I am, being evil. The result of being evil is spiritual death, or separation from God. The Bible goes on to remind us that our righteousness is as filthy rags before God. Therefore if this relationship which now has a massive chasm or great separation because man's fall, if this relationship was to be healed, and restored, God had to take the necessary steps required, for the best in man would never be able to rise up to God's standard and requirement. And thank God He Did! The Lord Jesus came to pay the penalty for man's sin, as God will only forgive sin by the shedding of blood. He therefore sacrificed His Only Son, our Lord Jesus, who Himself was without sin, yet died a sinner's death. The wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord. The Bible reminds us,

"For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish but have everlasting life." Jesus has paid the price for the salvation of the entire mankind. He took upon himself the penalty of sin and death, on man's behalf. He arose victoriously on the third day, thus defeating the power of death and the grave. We are able to appropriate this by believing and by receiving. Believing that Jesus died for my sins, and that He arose victoriously on the third day, and thus receiving Him as our Saviour and Lord. For God did not send His Son into the world to condemn the world, but that the world through Him, might be saved. God's gracious gift of eternal life made available to every man and woman, every boy and every girl. Thus now united with Him, through His Great Work of reaching out to an otherwise perishing world, perishing human race, perishing precious people!! His Word that transforms lives, comes to each one of us today. How will you respond to the great love of God, expressed through Jesus, for your precious life? We celebrate the death and the resurrection of our Lord Jesus. Wishing you God's Peace, Grace and Love this Special Season. Easter Message by Pastor Kennedy Govender (BASA President)

Iqwabe United ayishayi iyabulala

On behalf of the KwaDukuza Municipality Council, the town's residents and myself. I would like to extend congratulations and best wishes on the 69th anniversary of the Stanger Siva Temple Hall. This 69th anniversary coincides with a historic and important centenary in the life of the South African struggle as well as to our democracy as the rainbow nation. We celebrate the lives of Isithalandwe Nelson Mandela, who was an avid follower of Mahatma Gandhi's teachings, and Mama Albertina Sisulu comrades who sacrificed their entire lives to the struggle for the liberation of black people, which includes constituents of your organisation. As we celebrate your anniversary and this meticulous centenary, we pride ourselves in the efforts of the Stanger Siva Temple Hall in social cohesion and nation building and believe as a government led by the ANC that you have indeed played a pivotal role towards the moral regeneration of South Africa and KwaDukuza in particular. I concur the words of my predecessor Councillor Brown who once said, “The facilities provided by your organisation are exceptionally outstanding and the role played by your religious organisation in KwaDukuza cannot be minimised. On that note, I wish that your organisation grows from strength to strength and that you continue to be an inspiration for many years to come.

In the top half of the draw, Vasa Rungasamy accounted for Paddy Padayachee 2-1, Aston beat Navern 2-0, Geanballey beat Terrence Subban 2-1 and Charlie Pillay defeated Jerry Arunachellam 2-1 to book their quarter final berth. The quarter final in the top half was one way traffic as Rungasamy and Geanballey accounted for Aston and Charlie in straight sets. The bottom half saw a bit more contest with Sobram and Nine beating Justin and Jody 2-1 advance into the semi-final. The first semi-final saw Rungasamy win the first game but Geanballey came storming back winning the next two games for a 2-1 victory securing his place in

the final. The second semi-final was an evenly contest affair. Sobram drew first blood winning the opening game. Nine Pillay stormed back into contention by taking the next game. Sobram regrouped and levelled maters winning the second game. Sobram continued his excellent form to clinch the third and decisive game

iLembe trounce Dawnheights in local derby The local clash between the giants of iLembe Cricket Union, iLembe Cricket Club and Dawnheights Cricket Club came to a head in the KwaZulu Natal Cricket Union Challenge league 50 over fixture played at the Gledhow Cricket grounds. What was expected to be a fiercely contested affair fizzled out to a one-sided game with iLembe dominating with bat and ball. iLembe won the toss and they little hesitation in sending in Dawnheights to bat on a damp wicket. That decision proved crucial as the Dawnheights batters

found it difficult to get going. S. Solanki (26), A. Dasai (21) and K. Govender (13) were the only batters that offered any resistance and reached double figures. Rampant bowling from star bowlers S. Logenathan and Z. Ali cramped up the batters taking 3 wickets apiece. Logenathan claimed 3 scalps for a paltry 16 runs from 9 overs that included 3 maidens. Ali was equally impressive taking 3 wickets for 17 runs from 6.5 overs with 2 maidens. They were assisted by I. Mahomed (10-4-15-2) and A. Nadasen (10-4-27-2).

Dawnheights were bowled out for 103 in 44.5 overs. In reply, iLembe cruised to 107/1 in 16 overs. Ahmed Sarwar top scored 57 with A. Bageloo contributing 40. iLembe won by 9 wickets. Meanwhile, in the iLembe Cricket Union T20 match played at the Gledhow Grounds on Saturday, Manor A cruised to a six wicket win over United. United batted first scoring 102/6 in a revised 15 overs. Y. Ismail THE (31), U. Hoosen (14) and A. Hansa
