TOGETHER WE CAN BEAT THE CORONAVIRUS

Ramaphosa announces phased return to economic activity President Cyril Ramaphosa, on Thursday evening (23 April), announced that the country is moving towards a graded alert level system, to determine how strict the country's lockdown restrictions will be as it continues to battle the coronavirus pandemic, while reigniting the economy. The president said a lockdown remains the best way to prevent the spread of the coronavirus, but it cannot be sustained indefinitely. “Beyond the 30th of April, we will begin a phased and gradual return to economic activity,” he said. “There is still much that is unknown about the manner and the spread of the virus among the population,” he said. “Therefore the action taken now must be measured.” To aid in this measured approach, the country will adopt a risk-adjusted strategy made up of five levels, that will determine the risk and infection rate nationally, and in each province, district and metropolitan area. The approach has been guided by scientists and experts, who have warned that a sudden end to the lockdown will lead to a massive increase in the number of infections, the president said. The levels, which denote the level of action needed to stop the spread of the virus, are as follows: Level 5 drastic measures are required; Level 4 some activity can be allowed,

subject to extreme requirements; Level 3 the easing on some restrictions on work and social activities; Level 2 further easing of restrictions, but the maintenance of social distancing; Level 1 most normal activity can resume, with caution and health guidelines followed at all times. Minister of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs, (CoGTA), Nkosazana DlaminiZuma, has reiterated the various levels at which South Africa will operate, when new restrictions kick in on 1 May. Currently, the country faces one more week of level 5 restrictions, which has come to be known as a 'hard lockdown', where all nonessential workers and businesses are prohibited from leaving their places of residence. Under these restrictions, hot foods, alcohol and cigarettes have been banned, and only minimal movement is allowed under very specific circumstances. However, from the end of the month, the country will move down to level 4 restrictions, which opens up significant parts of the economy. The minister said that all gatherings, apart from funerals and for work, will remain prohibited. This includes conferences, entertainments venues, cinemas, and theatres. Visiting friends, neighbours and

Ilembe District rolls out free mobile Covid-19 testing unit in KwaDukuza In light of the increase in transmissions for COVID-19, it has become necessary to scale up the capacity to test citizens. For this reason, Speaker of the KwaDukuza Municipal Council, Cllr. Phumlile Zulu, officially launched a mobile sampling and testing unit to be deployed in the ILembe District. Zulu unveiled the National Health Laboratory Service (NHLS) Mobile

Laboratory and inspected the inside of the sampling and testing mobile unit at the ILembe District Department of Health Offices in KwaDukuza. This new innovation will assist us greatly to monitor the location of new cases in real-time. Zulu also expressed that “This will assist the municipality a n d t h e

SA's confirmed coronavirus cases increase South Africa's confirmed Covid-19 cases have risen to 4 793 with three more deaths, Health Minister Zweli Mkhize said on Monday. This takes the country's Covid-19 death toll to 90. South Africa recorded its first Covid-19 death on March 27, when the country entered into a stringent Level 5 lockdown. Monday's confirmed cases are an increase of 247 on Sunday's 4 546 cases. The three latest fatalities are a 54-year-old KwaZuluNatal man with underlying diabetes who presented with respiratory distress, a 79-year-old chronically ill Western Cape man who presented with shortness of breath and chest pain and a 58-year-old HIV+ Western Cape man who presented with imminent cardiovascular arrest. The minister said a total of 178 470 Covid-19 tests have been conducted to date, of which 9 827 were done in the last 24 hours. The Western Cape continued to have the most cases in the country, followed by Gauteng, KwaZulu-Natal and the Eastern Cape.

Vivian Reddy donates R4.5m towards fight against Covid-19 On Friday, Premier Sihle Zikalala and Health MEC Nomagugu Simelane-Zulu expressed their gratitude to businessman Vivian Reddy, who has donated 300 000 masks worth R4.5 million, to assist in curbing the spread of the coronavirus in the province. Half of the masks will be given to healthcare workers, while the remainder will be handed out to people in informal settlements. Reddy has urged those business people and ordinary citizens, who have the means, to also find ways to assist. "Half of the masks will be going to our hospitals because our healthcare workers need masks and protective equipment. The remainder of the masks will be going to informal settlements and transit camps. It is going to be a norm, where we all now have to learn to live with masks," said Zikalala. Zikalala also encouraged

residents to embrace a culture of mask wearing, including masks made from cloth. Simelane-Zulu said on the side of health workers, the frontline soldiers, we have the responsibility of ensuring their safety. The donation will contribute not only to helping to save the lives of the people of KZN. She also urged residents to use cloth masks. "These are masks that we can all use at home. They must have three layers and can be washed in hot water, with soap," she said. Commenting on the donation, Reddy said; "We believe that to stop the pandemic, everyone needs a mask. We urge all businesses to come and support the province and the MECs who are doing a great job. This donation is our show of support to say they are doing a wonderful job by supporting our people.”
