Ilembe invests R37 million in water project

Over 1000 households from KwaDukuza will have permanent portable water supply following the iLembe District Municipality Council led by the Mayor, Councillor Thobani Shandu introduction of the contractor for the Glenhills Asbestos Cement Pipe Replacement and Reticulation Project at Shayamoya Hall 13, on the 26 June. The ongoing water interruption in the district has led the Council of iLembe to l a u n c h v a r i o u s refurbishment projects in the District recently, namely, Esidumbini, Driefontein water supply upgrades and Glenhills Asbestos Cement Pipe Replacement and Reticulation. Purpose of the meeting was shared by the Deputy Mayor of the iLembe District Municipality who is also the Chairperson of the Infrastructure Technical Portfolio Committee, Councillor James Van Whye. “the continuous unreliable water supply in the district have increased the operation and maintenance expenditure which have led to increased service interruptions and poor service delivery to some areas which impact on

tainting the image of the municipality. Today we came to end the ongoing water interruption that, we hope people will cooperate,” said Deputy Mayor Van Whye. Addressing the community, Mayor Thobani Shandu told the packed Shayamoya Hall that “the top priorities of this Council are to tackle water challenges and address the issue of old infrastructure as it brings unnecessary pressure to the community and us as iLembe Council. We have taken a stance to address the issue of

vandalism of projects with the aim to enhance revenue generation and minimize water loss. As iLembe District Municipality we have a primary role to supply with water to the residents of iLembe, therefore, we kindly request community members to protect infrastructure” said Shandu. He further told community members that water loss will cripple the municipality as litres of water are unaccounted for that is why we eradicate standpipes. The multi-million rands

Anti-drug operation yields success

By Xpress Reporter

Local law enforcement agencies successfully intercepted two vehicles that were allegedly transporting dagga in a most devious way. KwaDukuza SAPS communications officer Constable Siphesihle Myeni said a multi-disciplinary team acted on intelligence that a Nissan Hardbody bakkie

being towed in a trailer by a Toyota Fortuner was in fact loaded with dagga. A team comprising of KwaDukuza SAPS, McCarthy Toyota Risk, Fidelity Security, Hawks Security and Eos Crime Intelligence monitored the two vehicles, before strategically intercepting them on the N2 South Bound. “Dagga to the value of

R1270-00 and cash amount of R5757-50 were booked in at KwaDukuza SAPS.,” Constable Myeni stated. A white Toyota Fortuner with an ND registration plate, and a white Nissan bakkie also with an ND registration plate and a trailer were also booked in at the local police station. At the time of going to press, two suspects were expected to appear in court.

KDM committed to creating inclusive economy By Xpress Reporter

KwaDukuza Municipality is committed towards building an inclusive economy. This was revealed by Mayor Cllr Lindile Nhaca on Friday last week, when she delivered a message of support at the launch of the Chief Albert Luthuli Fun Run and Walk, at Luthuli Museum. Nhaca said the municipality remained committed to continue working towards improving the lives of the people through job creation and the creation of business opportunities. “We need to work as a collective towards ensuring that we create an inclusive economy that will bring more jobs, alleviate poverty, and reduce unemployment, in the interest of benefitting the previously disadvantaged and most vulnerable groups in society. “We are facing a very steep economic downturn. KwaDukuza Municipality is still responding to the impact of the April and May floods. The impact further exacerbated the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic which halted the hosting of several

tourism driven events including the Luthuli legacy Walk and Fun Run, for a period of two years. “While still picking up the pieces, there is a glimmer of hope,” the Mayor said. With the lifting of the Covid-19 regulations and restrictions, several events that are integral to the KwaDukuza's economic and tourism growth strategy are being hosted this year. These events include the KwaDukuza Child Welfare's Winter Fair, the Ballito Pro and the Luthuli legacy Walk and Fun Run.

“KwaDukuza is not only the home of (Chief) Luthuli but the home of the architect of the Zulu Kingdom, the great Zulu King Shaka kaSenzangakhona. We have all the reasons to celebrate during these times in the knowledge that both men shared a common place and a common vision for their people. It is with these reasons that we have partnered with the Luthuli Museum in welcoming people from all walks of life to join the celebration of our rich heritage,” Nhaca said.

A local resident and her 3-yearold child were left traumatized on Thursday last week after five men stormed into their home while load shedding was in effect. In a statement provided to the local police, the woman claims that the men, who were all wearing face masks, pretended to be police officers from Gauteng, looking for drugs and alcohol. The victim told police that two of the men pointed with firearms, and forced her into her dining room where they allegedly pointed her child with a firearm, before proceeding to remove items from the house.

KwaDukuza SAPS communications officer Constable Siphesihle Myeni said the suspects allegedly removed a Sinotec TV, an LG radio, an assortment of liquor, two mobile phones, snickers and a Polo Vivo vehicle. The value of the items is estimated at R110 000. Constable Myeni said police received information that the suspects could possibly be at Blythedale Beach. A multidisciplinary team proceeded to the location, but found that the suspects had left. Myeni adds that the team was able to trace the suspects to a house in Ntshawini. “Upon entering the house, (the) members found one suspect with

alcohol and electrical appliances taken as per above mentioned case. Upon searching the suspect a key of a motor vehicle was found on his person. 'Members then interviewed the said male about the key and he voluntarily disclosed that the key was for the vehicle taken during the house robbery, which (vehicle) was hidden in the Lindelani area. Members then proceeded to Lindelani and recovered the vehicle,” stated Constable Myeni. The suspect has been detained at KwaDukuza police station, while the search cont9neus for his alleged accomplices.

Officials urge to serve with honesty and integrity

District Mayor declares war on corruption

By Xpress Reporter

Ilembe District Mayor Thobani Shandu is on the warpath. On Thursday last week the mayor led the iLembe Family of Municipalities (which includes the District Municipality, KwaDukuza, Mandeni, Maphumulo and N d w e d w e l o c a l municipalities) in launching an anti-corruption hotline. In an event that started with an anti-corruption awareness campaign at Sundumbili Plaza in Mandeni, the mayor unveiled at the hotline at the official launch session held at Sibusisiwe Hall. Delivering the keynote address, Cllr Shandu homed in on the issue of ethics and correct behaviour, stressing that human character had a lot to do with ethical conduct. The mayor said the collective and individual ethical conduct of all employees within a municipality was a reflection of the institution's ethical orientation. “Fraud and Corruption has been identified as a significant risk that threatens the sustainability of public resources and service delivery. It is among the most serious obstacles to governance, economic and

social development. “In South Africa the fight against corruption is one of the major tasks and priorities in government. Corruption has a detrimental effect on government's effort to deliver effective services to the people. The action government is taking now to end corruption and hold those responsible to account will determine the pace and trajectory of the radical social economic transformation we seek. This day provides an opportunity for iLembe Family of Municipalities to

join forces against corruption,” Mayor Shandu stated. The mayor further stated that iLembe District, as a whole, had taken some significant steps to address issues of fraud and corruption. Shandu mentioned mechanisms such as the Municipal Public Accounts Committees (MPACs) and the Independent Audit Committees as being instrumental in the provision of oversight over financial management, and in ensuring the integrity of

municipalities. The District's Anti-Fraud and Corruption Strategy and Policy, the mayor added, is aligned with the KZN Cogta Strategy, which seeks to give effect to the following:

• Anti-fraud and AntiCorruption Prevention initiatives, • Anti-Fraud and AntiCorruption Detection initiatives and • Anti-Fraud and AntiCorruption response strategies “The District has a section under Enterprise Risk Management that focusses on Anti-Fraud and Corruption and some Local Municipalities' are in a process to establish this section. Fraud Risk Assessment are done on annual basis. “Fraud Risk Registers have been developed and is monitored by Risk Management Committee, Audit Committee, Portfolio Committees and Executive Committee. Annual workshops on anti-fraud and corruption are done to

councillors and management. Annual anti-fraud and corruption awareness campaigns are done to staff and councillors on annual basis. “The District Command Council took a resolution for all Municipalities to run a shared service hotline and an independent service provider has been appointed to run with it. It will go live on the 1 July 2022,” Shandu said. Shandu warned that stealing from government would have an adverse impact of service delivery. “We will not allow corruption under our watch. Each government official is an agent of change and, therefore, a leader in promoting the public good through serving the public in an unbiased and impartial manner and cost-effectively,” Shandu concluded.

Covid-19 recedes, enters Monkeypox The National Institute for Communicable Diseases (NICD) has confirmed that a case of monkeypox has been identified through laboratory testing at the NICD on Wednesday, 22 June 2022. The case involves a 30-yearold male residing in the Gauteng province. He reports no recent travel history. Contact tracing has commenced, identifying any additional linked cases of monkeypox in South Africa. Monkeypox is a rare viral infection in humans. Since May 2022, monkeypox has been reported in more than 3 000 individuals from several European countries, the USA, Canada, Australia, Morocco and the 22 King Shaka Street, Dawnside, stanger opp Tyre Track United Arab Emirates. monkeypox and is already the largest outbreak of monkeypox recorded. The cases to date mostly involve individuals that self-identify as men having sex with men. Risk factors include reporting multiple sexual partners. Recent large social events are thought to have served as super spreader events. Person-to-person transmission involves close contact (for example kissing, cuddling, sexual contact) with an infected person or materials that have been contaminated by an infected person (for example sharing linen, clothes and other household items). The virus is not highly transmissible and close physical contact is required for transmission. It does not spread similarly to influenza or the SARSCoV-2 virus. Monkeypox presents with an acute illness characterised by fever and general flu-like symptoms, followed by the eruption of a blister-like rash on the

skin. The disease is rarely fatal and cases typically resolve within two to four weeks. Most cases do not require hospital treatment. Prevention of infection hinges on the isolation of cases until fully recovered. The risk to the general population is considered low, given the low transmissibility of the virus. The World Health Organization recommends increasing vigilance for cases with contact tracing and monitoring of laboratory-confirmed cases. Isolation of confirmed cases allows for the prevention of transmission and interruption of the cycle of transmission. Circulation of the monkeypox virus in humans may be eliminated through this classic containment approach. Mass vaccination against the monkeypox virus is not currently recommended.

Ndwedwe Local Municipality is setting the bar very high in terms of implementing and consolidating an inclusive approach to governance, through its well functioning Joint Coordinating Committee (JCC). The Ndwedwe JCC includes representatives from the municipality, representatives from the Department of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs (Cogta) as well as traditional leaders (Amakhosi), which are led by their local chairperson, Inkosi Khumalo. The JCC held a meeting at the Ndwedwe Council Chamber last week, which provided |mayor Cllr Samuel Mfeka with an opportunity to unpack the municipality's Integrated Development Plan (IDP) for the rest of the current Council's term of office.

Half adult population receive Covid 19 vaccine

Mayor Shandu attends Provincial Youth Summit

VACCINATION: Government says half of the adult population in South Africa has received the Covid-19 vaccine

By Xpress Reporter

Half of the adult population in South Africa has so far received the Covid-19 vaccine. This is according to Cabinet, which met last week to discuss a range of issues, including the vaccination uptake, in the midst of a slowdown in the rate of infection. In a statement, Cabinet welcomed the drop in the rate of infection, and said this would give government an opportunity to continue rolling out vaccination under relatively pressure-free conditions. “Half of all adult South Africans have to date received at least one COVID-19 vaccine dose. Government aims to use the lowinterest loan recently approved by the World Bank to purchase additional COVID-19 vaccine doses and ensure that the nation is adequately protected against potential infections. “Cabinet also considered matters

related to developments on the management of the COVID-19 pandemic, particularly with the progress being made towards a full return to normal socio-economic activities,” Cabinet stated. Meanwhile, Cabinet has also welcomed the visit by Alok Sharma, President of the 26th United Nations Climate Change Summit, who visited the country last week to assess South Africa's commitment to clean energy transition. “South Africa has been hard at work in preparing the ground for our clean energy transition and a move to clean energy sources such as green hydrogen, biomass, wind power, solar power and hydro-power, among other renewables. This so-called energy mix allows for a balance between energy sources to ensure reliable power to meet the country's growing energy needs,” Cabinet said.

FUNDRAISING

SUMMIT: Pictured is Ilembe District Mayor Thobani Shandu (left) and Cllr Nerish Sing, at the Summit

By Xpress Reporter

Ilembe District Municipality Mayor Thobani Shandu participated in the Youth in Local Government Summit at the weekend. The Summit was organized by the KZN Department of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs (Cogta), and was held at Farmers Hall in Newcastle. Also in attendance at the Summit was Cllr Nerish Sing of the Democratic Alliance (DA).

The summit consisted of a panel discussion which involved of young people who occupy strategic leadership positions both provincially and nationally, who shared their insights on some of the challenges that face young people. Addressing the Summit, KZN MEC for Cogta Sipho Hlomuka said, having noted the massive youth unemployment in South Africa, the department took a commitment to prioritise the lives

of young people by providing them with internship programmes to ensure that they have the necessary skills and experience. The MEC said the department has recruited 661 interns across municipalities and within the department. IFP Member of Parliament Mkhuleko Hlengwa, who was one of the panellists, said youth must be given space to play their role in governance. “There is a shortage of mentors because people are fearful of being left out and want to stubbornly occupy the space. Representation must not just be numerical but it must be substantive, qualitative, efficient and functional so that it makes the required impact in the spaces of representation,” he said. Giving a message of support at the Youth Summit, Inkosi Phathekile Chiliza, the Chairperson of the KwaZuluNatal House of Traditional Leaders, welcomed the move by the Department to involve young Amakhosi in the event. He encouraged young people to fulfil their dreams as the future lies with them. The Summit comes shortly after KZN Premier Sihle Zikalala announced the establishment the KZN Youth Empowerment Fund, which will see R100 million being set aside to assist young people who are in business to acquire tools for their businesses. “This fund is an important intervention as it shows the provincial government's commitment to helping young people succeed,” said the provincial government.

Now in its fourth year, World Wellbeing Week (June 2027 to July 01) returns in June 2022 to provide the opportunity for participants worldwide to celebrate the many aspects of wellbeing, from meaningful, purposeful work to financial security, physical, mental and emotional health, social resilience and empathic corporate and civic leadership, community relations and care for the environment. Wellbeing has never been so important to our lives and livelihoods. The pandemic has revealed a capacity for change, never before thought possible, with people adapting mentally and physically all over the world. It has brought with it different ways of thinking and a new-found resilience. The word on everyone's lips has been: 'wellbeing'. World Wellbeing Week 2022 will celebrate these universal achievements when the world came together as one. When is World Wellbeing Week 2022? Held annually during the last week in June, World Wellbeing Week will allow us to thank the health workers and carers who have supported us tirelessly, whilst also spotlighting the growing number of practitioners, charities and social enterprises, who specialise in their own areas of wellbeing. An increasing number of businesses now also embrace wellbeing as a strategic priority, and the week will provide a platform for employers, large and small, to celebrate their own activities and events, and in so doing to show their appreciation for valued employees, customers, partners and suppliers. How to get involved in World Wellbeing Week 2022 2022 will be a time to rejoice. A time to travel once again, to reconnect with friends and family, and to bring work colleagues closer together united in their aims and aspirations for the future. World Wellbeing Week was created in Jersey and now takes place worldwide with a reach of millions. All are invited you to get involved. Together, we can create even more impact for wellbeing during World WellBeing Week 2022.

Amatikulu fun run a huge success

Amatikulu Primary School raised a whopping R70 43690at its annual fun run held at the Amatikulu Recreation Grounds recently. The school's premier fundraising event attracted a large field of athletes as over 500 learners took to the streets to enjoy the 4km fun run through the residential village of Amatikulu. This is officially the highest single amount collected for a fun run in the

history of the school. The atmosphere at the prizegiving function was electric as learners waited in eager anticipation for the presentation of over 130 prizes to those that performed well in the fundraising drive. The top three prizes worth in the region of R3500 was generously sponsored by Mynah and John Singh of Amatikulu. The first prize of a mountain bike was won by

grade 4 learner, Lethokuhle Cele who raised an impressive R1620. The second prize went to Grade R learner Asiphe Ndlovu who raised a respectable R1500to win an oven-stove combination. Enzokuhle Tembe, also a Grade R learner secured third spot and walked away with a microwave oven for her contribution of R1330. In addition, a special prize of a motor-bicycle was sponsored for the

learner who collected the highest in the foundation phase by Grade R educator Mrs P. Muthusamy and Mr Ryno Kilian of Ryno Security. Asiphe Ndlovu was yet again the lucky learner who walked away with this awesome prize, more than 130 prizes comprising dinner sets, duvet sets, hot plates, heaters, toasters, kettles, blankets, fitness watches and many more were handed out to the learners who performed well

in the fundraiser. The prizegiving was graced by many well-wishes and dignitaries. Principal of Amatikulu Primary School, GD Singh, was delighted with the outcome of the fundraising venture and attributed the success to the continued support received from parents, learners, teachers and the broader community. Said Singh: “Despite the challenges experienced with the recent flooding and civil

unrest in many areas and the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic in the recent years, we were still able to achieve an incredible outcome thanks to our hardworking band of educators, SGB members, parents and learners. We also remain indebted to the many sponsors, including our chief sponsor Mynah and John Singh who have supported us without reservation over the years.”

A team of spirited mountain enthusiasts headed to the Red Mountains (Rooiberge) of the province of Free State in the Golden Gate National Park. Included in their plans was an adventure trek into the Tugela Gorge, near the source of the Mighty Tugela River. Having spent four action packed days amongst the stunning mountain ranges near the border of Lesotho and witnessed mesmerizing winter sunsets and sunrises, the team returned successfully. “The embrace of Mother Nature and the allure of the Mountains, can only heal and as well teach us to be more positive and stronger beings,” said T e a m L e a d e r Vi m a l Mothilal.

Youth development continues in KwaDukuza

U13 and U17 winners, Gueldies and Duck FC

Many a politician and community leader talk about the slow retrogressing of KwaDukuza due to the sharp increase in crime bad social habits and ill-discipline mostly among the youth but very few have taken up the

challenge of eradicating these evils of society. One such individual however has taken up the cudgels and in the past and present organised events in KwaDukuza with the soul intention of

tackling the issue and keeping youth occupied in different spheres such as sports and other social events, developing the youth and keeping the of the streets. This hero is Ismail Gori and needs to be applauded and recognised of his unselfish deeds. This past Saturday he organised a soccer tournament for youth that was held at ZMS but sadly again support from the community, politicians and parents was not forthcoming. The tournament itself proved to be a success attracting a wide range of soccer talent and dedicated few individuals. Gori said: “My main aim is to revive soccer in KwaDukuza and the only way to do this is through the development of the youth.” He has encouraged the support from the public, more especially parents, community leaders and politicians. His aim is to form a youth league from U6 to U17 and encourages for ward councillors and community leaders to initiate this in their respective wards. This will see the revival of soccer in particular and sport in general in KwaDukuza and will lead to the eradication of the social evils of society. At the soccer tournament played this Saturday, Gueldies, under coach Alvin Moonsamy proved powerful after winning the tournament undefeated in the U13 section with Ducks FC claiming the U17 trophy.
