“We must reduce infections,” says Zulu King By Xpress Reporter
T
he reigning King of the Zulu Nation, Misuzulu kaZwelithini, opted to ignore government's stance to spurn the commemoration of King Shaka Day in KwaDukuza. Instead, the King chose to use his keynote address on Friday the 24th of September 2021 to tackle social ills and to bring the message of hope to the Zulu Nation amid the deepening social, economic and health crises in the country. Inkosi Misuzulu KaZwelithini braved ill health and came to KwaDukuza to lead hundreds of Amabutho (warriors) and Izintombi (maidens) in celebrating the legacy of Inkosi uShaka, the founder of the Great Zulu Nation. Addressing the gathering, Inkosi Misuzulu paid homage to his great-grandfather, Inkosi uShaka, for the unequalled leadership skills that he displayed when he brought together many disparate tribes under the umbrella of the Great Zulu Nation, which today enjoys respect and recognition across the globe. In a speech read by his personal assistant, Prince Thulani Zulu, Inkosi Misuzulu expressed outrage at the scourge of violence against women and children. He said historically, the Zulu HYMNS: Inkosi Misuzulu KaZwelithini (3rd from left) is seen leading Amabutho Nation had always cherished women and their important role in (warriors) is singing traditional hymns. human procreation. “The Almighty uses women to bring human beings to the world. All of us here came to this world through a woman. What some men are doing today is extremely painful. Women abuse is not part of our fibre; it goes against the principles of Ubuntu. There can be no selfrespecting member of the Zulu Nation who would be found abusing a woman,” the King said. The King, who had celebrated his 48th birthday the previous day, also spoke at length about the devastating impact of the Covid-19 pandemic, and urged all Zulus to continue to adhere to the nonpharmaceutical measures to curb the spread of the disease. “My request had been that, for my birthday present, we should all strive to reduce the rate of infections. While the numbers have indeed gone down drastically, we can still do more. Let us continue to wear face masks, wash our hands or sanitize regularly, and also observe social distancing,” the King implored. KwaDukuza Mayor Dolly Govender has presided over the official unveiling of the upgraded Industrial Substation, and the opening of the new KDM Electrical Switching Room, at KwaDukuza Mall. Held on Thursday last week, the event marked a turning point in KwaDukuza's perennial problem of frequent power failures due to ageing and failing infrastructure. The municipality says, as part of its Energy Master Plan, upgrades to identified substations was deemed essential, taking into account the economic significance of a stable electricity supply system. The upgrades to the Industrial Substation include the following: • Construction of a new 1 x 10MVA 33/11kV Transformer

DA demands release of Rocky Park report PROBE: The DA is demanding release of the investigation report into the infamous Rocky Park integrated housing development project
By Xpress Reporter
The Democratic Alliance (DA) in KwaDukuza is calling for an urgent release of the investigation report into the Rocky Park housing debacle. The integrated housing development project, situated in Ward 19 of KwaDukuza Local Municipality, made headlines about a decade ago when the contractor failed to complete the project, despite raking in tens of millions of rands of taxpayers' money. To date, only Scheme 9 of the project has been fully completed and occupied by beneficiaries. Work is underway on Scheme 8, as part of the Department of Human Settlements efforts to revive the project.
contract period with payments being processed. It is further believed that the department has also found that there was an over claim amount of R68.9 million. S o m e o f t h e recommendations that are believed to have been made by the department include: * The legal adviser of the department should analyse and determine all violations by the contractor and KwaDukuza Municipality and the implications thereof. * The department should conduct a further investigation to ascertain if any of its officials committed an act of misconduct regarding overpayment to the contractor. * KwaDukuza Municipality
The DA says the Department of Human Settlements has made shocking revelations with regard to the project, which include extremely adverse findings in respect of the municipality and the contractor, as well as some officials within the department. The findings are believed to range from non-compliance with the National Housing Code, non-compliance with the tripartite agreement (which involved the department, the municipality and the contractor); failure by the municipality to monitor the performance of the contractor to ensure compliance, and work being undertaken outside of
to investigate a possible act of misconduct against officials who certified work on site without having verified it. “The DA believes heads should roll and the MM should report this to the SAPS. The Municipal Finance Management Act is clear: When there is suspicion or allegations it must be reported to the SAPS. The DA wants the Premier to release the final findings and report. “It's almost a decade the housing project experienced one crisis to another. Our community has a right to know,” stated DA caucus leader in KwaDukuza Council, Madhun Sobram Sing. Meanwhile, Cllr Sing has also questioned the delay in the release of an SIU report into KDM's PPE procurement during the hard lockdown last year. Sing says in spite of the municipality's attempt to justify PEE spending, the SIU pounced on KDM to investigate compliance. “That report is also outstanding. It raises many questions whether we received the quantity that was invoiced for. The quality as well since there were national guidelines on prices. Again did we overpay and those guilty must be brought to book. Only the SIU report can confirm or deny whether there was any wrongdoing in the absence of that there is speculation of wrongdoing,” stated Sing.
Driver entrapped, several injured in N2 crash
CRASH: Three people were seriously injured in a collision on the N2 Highway
Local emergency services had another jolting moment on Thursday morning when they responded to a head-on collision on the N2 Highway. IPSS Medical Rescue says the accident happened in the vicinity of Umvoti Toll Plaza. Emergency services say a vehicle travelling on the north-bound lane had apparently lost control and veered off onto the opposite lane, where it collided with a vehicle travelling on the
south-bound lane. “The driver of the vehicle which was traveling south, was heavily entrapped in the wreckage and paramedics and firefighters worked to free the man. Once freed from the vehicle, the critically injured man was further stabilised before being transported to hospital. Two more additional patients were also treated on scene and transported to medical facilities,” IPSS Medical Rescue said in a statement

Teacher unions threaten mass action over retrenchment plan By Xpress Reporter
Teacher unions are outraged over plans by the KZN Department of Education to retrench thousands of workers amid crippling budget cutdowns. This comes after KZN Education MEC Kwazi Mshengu revealed that provincial treasury had instructed his department to reduce its staff complement by at
least 6000 workers, including an estimated 2000 educators. It is believed the instruction from provincial treasury stems from the allocation of a reduced budget for all government departments, as part of former finance minister Tito Mboweni's austerity programme. COSATU in KwaZulu-Natal has described plan as “outrageous”. “This happens at a time when the
country is facing an unprecedented high unemployment rate and we will fight it to the bitter end. We are consulting our members on the ground about action but indications are that we are going to take to the streets to prevent the department from laying off our members,” stated COSATU provincial secretary Edwin Mkhize. The SA democratic Teachers Union (SADTU) in KwaZulu-Natal is also baffled by the MEC's utterances. The union has questioned how could the MEC even considers Stanger Heights, Morningside, retrenchment when there Indian Village, Sunny Park, were 2000 teacher posts to be Oceanview, Northlands Park, filled. Nyoyamanzi, Warrenton SADTU provincial s e cretary Nomarashiya DA Candidate Caluza says the provincial department is dragging its feet on filling up vacant posts. Childhood Cancer Awareness Month September is Childhood Cancer Awareness Month, and is symbolised by a gold ribbon, worn to commemorate the event. This is an annual international awareness month to raise support, funding and awareness of childhood cancers and the impact for sufferers and families of sufferers of childhood cancer. It was founded in 2010 by former US President Barack Obama and is mainly run in the form of awareness events by cancer charities. Childhood cancer is devastating to growth and development in children, and
devastating to their families and friends. At a time when young people should be focusing on school, play and socialising, if they have cancer, their focus can be on medication, operations, and what life they have left. Parents of childhood cancer sufferers have the anguish of watching their children suffer, and the stress of decisions on medications and treatments as well as decisions on time of work for themselves and time off school for the child, and worst, trying to explain to a child what is happening to them and answering the resulting questions on life and
faith, and worst of all is the loss of a child to cancer, a devastation that can never be put right. Some forms of cancer are mainly or exclusively only seen in children, and that is something highlighted by the awareness month. Children can be more resilient to cancer and cancer treatments than adults, and there are many cases of triumph and complete recovery, where children make a complete recovery and grow up to normal life. But awareness, education and support are vital, which is why Childhood Cancer Awareness Month is also vital.

ANC intensifies campaign ahead of polls “We are at the mercy of criminals,” parliamentarians told By Xpress Reporter
The ANC is ramping up its campaigning as the November 1st polls loom closer. This became evident last week Friday when the party's provincial executive committee (PEC) deployed its members and other parliamentarians across KwaDukuza to interact with communities. The Xpress Times caught up with three members of the KZN legislature in Melville (Ward 24) where they joined the regional and branch leadership and members in a door-to-door campaign which culminated in a public meeting. The PEC delegation compromised
of MPLs Mynah Lemosa, Amon Zondi and Nigel Gumede, while the regional leadership was represented by Silindile Ngcobo (member of the regional task team) and Cyril Skade (convenor of the ANCYL regional task team). Also present at the meeting was the Ward 24 ANC candidate, Ms Virginia Mwandla, who is expected to ascend into the hot seat after the elections, as the community opted to reject the incumbent, Vincent Shezi. Addressing their grievances to the parliamentarians, community members said they were living at the mercy of criminals. Residents said criminals were wantonly targeting individuals and households, adding that house robberies were a common occurrence in the area. The parliamentarians also heard
that the area of Ward 14 was still without a community hall, ten years after the ward was established through the process of municipal re-demarcation. The leaders made a commitment to return to the area, post elections, to facilitate the establishment of anti-crime structures to work hand in hand with the local police to tackle crime. Meanwhile, Ward 29 ANC candidate (and current ward councillor) Njabulo Cele told a public meeting in Dube Village on Saturday that plans were afoot to accelerate service delivery, in the post-election era. In Ward 27 (Madundube) the ANC had deployed PEC member (and former MEC for Social Development) Weziwe Thusi and iLembe Speaker Siphesihle Zulu. Thusi made an

Very often the funeral parlour will tell you that they will sort the account after the funeral, please discuss prices before the funeral. Don't ask of extra family cars because there will be plenty of cars at the funeral. This stems from my previous experiences. Better the devil you know than the angel you don't know. Regards Anonymous

iLembe lose narrowly to ACC
iLembe Cricket Club beaten in a KZNCU T20 fixture by ACC
iLembe Cricket Club's dropped catches proved costly as they narrowly lost to ACC of Amanzimtoti in the KwaZulu Natal Cricket Union T20 clash played at the Gledhow Grounds this past Sunday. ACC captain J. Michaux won the toss and elected to bowl. iLembe posted a decent 140-3 after their 20 overs. Openers A. Bageloo and S. Dewlall put on 74 before Bageloo was caught and bowled by T. Chetty for 45 (4 fours, 1 six) after 12 overs. Dewlall soon followed for 25 (2 fours), bowled by I. Nair in the 15th over. S. Logenathan compiled 40* (3 sixes, 2 fours) and K. McAllister took the score to 116-3, before McAllister was caught by R. Ackerman for 7 in the 18th. C. Shange (10 *) ended iLembe's innings on 140-3. The best ACC bowlers were I. Nair (1-10 after 4), J. Clark (1-15 in 2) and T. Chetty (1-39 in 4).
In reply, ACC openers J. Michaux and J .Clark put on 71 after 9 overs. Both openers were dropped several times before S. Logenathan struck to remove Michaux for 45 (5 fours, 3sixes). The very next ball Logenathan dismissed R. Ackerman clean bowling him for a royal duck. M. Dlamini was Logenathan's 3rd wicket when he bowled him for 5 in the 11th over. With ACC total on 84 the match was in the balance as iLembe staged a comeback. R. Smith of ACC stamped his authority with an unbeaten 38* (3 fours, 1 six) to take the total to 145-5 after 19.3 overs. iLembe bowlers fought hard in the end but it was not meant to be as the initial spate of dropped catches proved too costly. iLembe's best bowlers were Logenathan (3-22 in 4), S. Dewlall (1-8 in 2), C. Mitchell (1-27 in 4). Acc won by 5 wickets.

Shalulile shines for Sundowns Orlando Pirates 0-2 Mamelodi Sundowns Mamelodi Sundowns beat Orlando Pirates 2-0 thanks to a brace by Peter Shalulile in their DStv Premiership clash at Orlando Stadium on Saturday. Shalulile scored both goals in the second half, in a match which Sundowns seemed pretty much in control throughout. The result means Sundowns remain unbeaten with four wins from five games and sit on top of the table with 13 points. This is Pirates' first loss of the league campaign and they sit with eight points on the table. Stellenbosch FC 2-1 Chippa United Sammy Seabi bagged the match opener before scoring an own goal as Chippa United suffered a 2-1 defeat at the hands of Stellenbosch FC at Danie Craven Stadium on Saturday evening.
Peter Shalulile scores a brace to ensure Sundowns remain undefeated
The hosts made a flying start to the encounter. They claimed the lead after just nine minutes of play, Stanley Dimgba converting on the follow-up after the initial shot from Judas Moseamedi was blocked by Chippa goalkeeper Ismael Watenga. The Chilli Boys took a while to muster a response, but it resulted in an equalising goal when they did. Seabi bagged the equaliser, sending a towering header into the back of the net after rising to meet Thabiso Lebitso's cross in the centre of the box. However, Seabi went from hero to villain in the 38th minute as he put the ball into his own net to hand Stellies the lead in the closing stages of the first half. Royal AM 4-2 TS Galaxy Royal AM continued their winning run in the DStv Premiership with an impressive 4-2 victory at home against a ten-
man TS Galaxy on Sunday. Tshidiso Monamodi opened the scoring on just four minutes at the Chatsworth Stadium. Marks Munyai was then shown a straight red card with seven minutes on the clock to leave Galaxy with an uphill battle to climb.Levy Mashiane added a second goal on 28 minutes for the hosts before Victor Letsoalo got in on the action with his goal on the stroke of half-time. Pogiso Sanoka netted a 77th minute penalty for Galaxy but then Kabelo Mahlasela added a fourth goal five minutes later. Mxolisi Macuphu headed home late on to add some respectability to the scoreline for the away team. Marumo Gallants 0-0 Kaizer Chiefs Marumo Gallants and Kaizer Chiefs ended the game with 10men in a goalless DStv Premiership draw on Sunday at the Peter Mokaba Stadium. In an encounter that Amakhosi were desperate to collect maximum points to climb the standings as they now occupy 13th place, which is a considerable concern for head coach Stuart Baxter. Meanwhile, Gallants, who were dominant against the visitors, are in the 14th spot with a game in hand following their CAF Confederation Cup duties.
Blitzboks celebrate
The Blitzboks clinched the 2021 World Rugby Sevens Series title after beating Great Britain 24-12 in the final of the Edmonton leg on Sunday. Muller du Plessis and Siviwe Soyizwapi scored two tries each for the South Africans, who had also won the Vancouver Sevens the week before. With the 2021 World Series limited to just those two events because of the pandemic, the Blitzboks are now champions. Earlier, Neil Powell's men beat
Kenya 33-7 in the semi-final. South Africa also beat Mexico 560, Hong Kong 43-5 and Canada 49-0 to continue their impressive form last weekend in Vancouver, where they claimed their first Canada Sevens tournaments. Against their African compatriots Du Plessis (2 tries), Soyizwapi (2) and Ronald Brown scored, with Brown converting four of the five tries. This is the Blitzboks' first World Series title since 2018.
