High school and primary school learners and parents from the Madundube and Mthandeni area in Maphumulo protested with regard to impending bus fare price increases on Thursday, 22 August 2013. The Xpress Times arrived in the area to find a heavy KwaDukuza SAPS police presence in front of approximately 150 people of which was mostly learners. Law enforcement curbed a potential bus from being stoned whilst learners set a tyre on fire. Bheki Mnuka who stood as a community representative says the people have chosen him to represent them because he understands the situations best since he is also using the Maphumulo Bus Service to travel to work and had been using it in the past years to travel to school. “I was a learner at

“Residents unhappy with fare increase” Continued from page 1 School, travelling with these same buses and now I am currently working but still using the same transport. I know exactly how both learners and parents feel about this huge bus fare increment. The rally was organized in order to simply raise our complaints towards the Maphumulo bus services.” said Mnuka. The Maphumulo Ward 27 Councillor, Sithembiso Magubane was there during the protest together with the SAPS personnel to maintain the peace. Councillor Magubane said that he had

never heard of any complaints from his community before the protest and that they had an agreement with Maphumulo Bus Service (MBS) that should there be any changes, the bus company will contact him first but they never fulfilled their promise. “I am planning to have a meeting with people from the Maphumulo Bus Services Company so that I can report back to the community because at the end of the day there are the ones who use the transport.” The MBS could not comment at this time.

KwaDukuza Municipality empowers women INSPIRING: KwaDukuza Gender Machinery SubCommittee Chairperson, Councillor Nozwe Khumalo leading a song dedicated to all women along with various faith organizations

By Xpress Reporter

KWADUKUZA Municipality's Gender Machinery SubCommittee Chairperson, Councillor Nozwe Khumalo says much has been done by government to empower women since the inception of democracy. “Our democratic government has made remarkable progress in terms of empowering women. The significant improvements on the lives of millions of South African women have been felt in just 19 years in a united democratic non-racial and nonsexist South Africa,” said Khumalo speaking at the

Shayamoya Community Hall on Thursday. The municipality has embarked on a campaign as part of celebrating the contribution of women and the role they play in building a better South Africa. The KwaDukuza Municipality is trying to make important strides to improve the role of women in the community. Khumalo also says the role of government in the lives of women has made a difference in ensuring that they receive the dignity they deserve. She said: “We have done a lot to r e s t o r e h u m a n d i g n i t y,

nonetheless, a lot is still needed to balance the gender scales.” “We have also noted with concern, the random acts of violence against women and children in KwaDukuza.” The municipality launched the Women's Month Programme earlier this month which seeks to promote the rights of women in society. Cllr Khumalo rounded off by saying, “We will continue to level the previous gender imbalances that have hit our gender machinery in the past and accelerate our campaign against the abuse of women.”

SAPPI Stanger audited by Green Scorpions By Xpress Reporter

KwaDukuza's iconic mill, SAPPI Stanger, underwent an environmental audit from Monday, 19 August 2013 to Friday, 23 August 2013 by the Green Scorpions. The Green Scorpions, no relation to the National Prosecuting Authority's Scorpions, refers to more than 600 Environmental Management Inspectors (EMI's) roaming South Africa in an effort to enforce environmental law, and subsequently chase down those who trespasses this law. Some residents within KwaDukuza alleged that the reason the Green Scorpions audited SAPPI during a 'working week' was due to the stench that emanates from the mill at different times. Another resident claimed that SAPPI have a “special fund to deal with effluents but choose not to do so.” According to Zelda Schwalbach (Regional communications manager of SAPPI) the Green Scorpion team audited the Stanger mill from 19 23 August. “As per their normal procedural protocol, which is bound by legislation, they do not give any kind of verbal or other feedback whatsoever on their findings and we await their formal report.”

Page 5

Deputy Mayor and Manor learners clean the CBD

She added that once the report is finalised it is published in their annual report, along with all other findings from their routine investigations and audits of industry and the information become part of the public domain. “This is the first time that they have visited the Sappi Stanger Mill so we do not have prior reports,” said Schwalbach. Schwalbach responded to the special fund for effluents allegation by saying that “effluent is managed according to our EMS (environmental management systems) that routinely deal with all our effluent and is routinely budgeted for in all manufacturing processes at all Sappi mills.” She added that all of these processes are aimed at reducing any impact that the effluent may have on the environment. “Because we are licensed by the Department of Water Affairs for the discharge of effluent, we adhere stringently to the parameters as set out in this license. Sappi Stanger mill is also ISO14 001 certified (which is an international accreditation system pertaining to environmental standards) and in terms of this certification undergoes regular external and internal audits.”

A group of Stanger Manor Secondary learners together with the deputy mayor of the KwaDukuza Municipality (KDM) worked hand in hand cleaning up a section of the CBD on Saturday, 17 August 2013. Councillor Dolly Govender together with three Grade 11 learners and officials from KDM Waste Management embarked on a litter clean-up

campaign that started from the Blaine-Hullett Street intersection and ended at the Gizenga-Hullett Street intersection. In KwaDukuza's signature sweltering heat, the Manor learners and the deputy Mayor cleaned the verges, the storm water drains and the pavements with gusto and enthusiasm. The Manor learners said that this was a school project that they wanted to include

Govender in as it was Women's month. According to the deputy mayor “the town is generally very clean” and cited the busy weekends as a reason for the 'rubble' build up. “The distribution of more bins in the CBD is in the pipeline and is budgeted for,” said a visibly exhausted Govender. The learners thanked the deputy mayor for availing herself and being hands on.

Two children die after vehicle collision Three people have died two of them little children aged between one and two years-old after a taxi and two cars collided on the M4 between Umhlanga and Umdloti on Monday afternoon at around 4:45pm. Exact detail to the cause of the accident and preceding events will remain a subject for police comment. Netcare 911 paramedics arrived at the scene and found a car down an embankment on the north bound lane with the driver still trapped in the wreckage. A taxi was found down an embankment on the south bound lane with the right hand side

A total of 19 people were injured when two taxis and another vehicle collided in Isipingo on Monday, said KwaZulu-Natal paramedics. The accident occurred on Old Main Road and Sonders Avenue, said Netcare 911 spokesman Chris Botha. One of the taxis veered off the road and stopped on a railway line, Botha said. All the people were treated on scene and then transported to various hospitals for further treatment. The road was temporarily obstructed by bystanders and emergency officials, but the scene would be cleared shortly.

of the taxi ripped off. The third vehicle was found facing north on the south bound lane. After the injured were triaged they found that an adult man and a child aged two had tragically died before our arrival. A one-year-old child was in a critical condition and paramedics worked fervently to resuscitate her, tragically though she died on scene due to the extensive injuries that she sustained. A critically injured man was airlifted to the Nkosi Albert Luthuli hospital while the critically injured driver from one of the cars was transported by ambulance to a Netcare hospital in Durban. Two seriously injured people were stabilised on the scene and then transported to a local hospital.

Thulani Zwane confirmed the shooting. He said four men attempted to hijack the car in Alberts Road. The driver, a man believed to be in his 50s who was wounded in his stomach, returned fire, fatally wounding one of the four men. He was driving with his wife when they were attacked. Zwane said the three other hijackers fled in a getaway vehicle. Chris Botha (Netcare 911) said the husband and wife had both been shot. The husband was taken to hospital in a critical condition while the wife was in a serious condition.

Blackberry Pearl

Cellphone Pouch

August 30, 2013

Illegal The availability of illegal cigarettes is stretching the country's law enforcements resources as they try to contain the high spate of crime and other matters which are the responsibility of other departments. Last week, police at the market plaza complex arrested Mozambican, Jilda Mutizi (36), who operates a tuck shop in Mandini, for being in possession of a large quantity of Aspen Export cigarettes. He is due back at court on 11 October.

snatched her cellphone and both fled into the nearby bushes. Xulu went into the bushy undergrowth and managed to apprehend one youth and recovered the stolen cellphone. Phumlani Mthembu (28) of Groutville will seek bail in court this week.

Women still have rights As the month for women draws to a close, some men are beginning to think that their rights which were so highly protected throughout the month is no longer a priority. Last week, Kishore Laloo (40) of Darnall appeared in court for assaulting his wife. Sandra Laloo alleges that she was chatting to her aunt when her husband approached and grabbed her arm, which had recently been operated on, and began assaulting her. The incident took place in the presence of their daughter. Kishore alleged that the two women were discussing him. She alleges that this is an ongoing problem. Kishore is due back in court on 1 October.

Sweating it out After a lengthy period of not seeing too many offenders appearing at court on charges of drunken driving, two errant drivers decided to change that by driving under the influence of alcohol. Local traffic officers arrested Mark Soobramoney (47) of Stanger Manor at 8:45pm, driving his vehicle in Townview Road. They suspected him to be drunk and conducted a blood test. In an unrelated incident, Nathan Chetty (28) of Glenhills was arrested at 9:15pm also on Townview Road. Both drivers are due back in court on 10 December. On this day, they will know what type of Christmas they can expect.

Concerned citizen When Sibongiseni Xulu, an employee at iLembe Municipality, noticed Nikiwe Zibane being robbed off her cellphone, he stopped his vehicle and went to her aid. Zibane alleges she was walking to school when she was approached by two youths. One

Cellphone blues Cellphone shops are gaining notoriety for being dishonest. Sibusiso Matomelo alleges he purchased a Blackberry for R400 from a dealer in King Shaka Street. As the phone did not work, he returned it and was asked to pay R50 for repairs. The owners failed

to repair the phone and he requested a refund of his R450. The owners refused and only after the intervention of his employer did the owners agree to refund his money. On his arrival to collect his refund, he was only given R400. An argument ensued over the R50 and Matomela alleges he was assaulted by four men with a baton. Waqas Aslam (24) of Pakistan and one other of Groutville are due back at court on 19 September. Hell hath no fury… You strike a woman, you strike a rock. How true this wonderful saying is. Just ask Amand Nhambirri. Police allege that they were summoned by Samekelisiwe Dludla who complained that Nhambirri, with whom she lives, had abused her. She also provided police with information that he had a stolen a laptop and computer in his possession. As she did not want to lay a charge of assault, they directed their attention to the suspected stolen property. At first, Nhambirri claimed to have bought the property from a store in the CBD. Later, he changed his version when he could not supply receipts. Nhambirri (26) was taken into custody and will seek bail this week. His girlfriend is now remorseful for having exposed him.

Yet another bit of evidence to support my submission! Following my article on 'racism' I had a surprise visit last week from four ex-students, who are now plying their trade in the police force. Coincidentally, on the same day, I met three other policemen outside the post office and they all had the same old tale of doom and gloom, something we have become quite accustomed to. I consoled them and said that it was now the norm in all facets of SA life and should be accepted. 'Just bide

your time till retirement, even if they put you on foot patrol, and wait for your retirement. 'I could not say otherwise, as that would have been a blatant lie, so little comfort was offered to them. My address today is on the all too familiar issue of a certain race group being promoted ahead of those who have more than the required experience and credentials. Many, many writers in the local and national media have addressed this concern of BEE, entitlement and affirmative action, thus I am merely reiterating and endorsing their sentiments. My friends told me that they had already spent in excess of 30 years in the SAPS but have been deliberately overlooked for promotion and that young 'rookies' with hardly any expertise are in charge of them. Alas, it is very sad indeed that such a thing is happening everywhere (hospitals, govt departments, education…) and that nobody can do anything about it. Simply look at what's happening in the teaching profession. When the present government took over from the NP, it promised that all people,

irrespective of race, colour or creed would be given equal opportunities. They termed it 'Masakhane and Ubuntu and various labels, but it has clearly emerged by these goings- on that some people are 'more equal than others', and that the playing fields, far from being levelled, are becoming worse than they used to be and potholes have been created. The obvious question of a normal, dedicated person would be, 'Why am I being sidelined and treated so indifferently? I did not aid and abet the apartheid regime? In fact, quite to the contrary, many Indian families stood up and fought vehemently and vigorously against the oppressors, but today their contributions are nullified and invalidated. It's okay being managed by a person who knows what is happening and is competent to handle a department, but to be instructed and bossed around by an absolutely incapable person is a bitter pill to swallow. All we can do is pray that the pension fund will not be tampered with! Keep your thoughts rolling and the letters flowing

RE: “Peaceful and funfilled fundraiser disrupted by unruly biker club from Stanger” This letter is written in response to the unfounded accusations made by the “Music Enthusiast / Concerned citizens of KwaDukuza” which appeared in the Xpress Times last week, 23 August 2013. In summary the following comments were made in the article: Hundreds of Children were in the vicinity; Drastic measure had to be taken; Keys removed from bike by an old gentleman; Function ended early thereby causing loss of funds to the fundraiser, Please note the following FACTS: We were invited by the organizers to the function. This entailed revving of the bikes. We are professionals in what

we do as we have always been invited by many organizations in Stanger as well as far as Durban. “Children” at 00:15 am in the morning? To our understanding there were no children in the vicinity. The so-called “old gentleman” also known as Aresh from Videotek Sound had angrily yanked the keys out of the motorcycle while the engine was running. This was the most dangerous event that occurred. (Are these the actions of an old gentleman?) I did not resort to violence as I am aware that he is older than I am, however he put my life at risk by angrily yanking the key and this had angered me. I therefore asked him to leave in the most inappropriate language. Was Aresh upset because the

bikers stole the attention of the crowd which made them look away from his pride and joy? This incident occurred around 00:15. If we supposedly ended this fund raiser early, what time was it supposed to end? We are respected and well known people in the community and by the organizations in our area. We are sure many of the organizations can vouch for us and our actions when we are invited to bring in our motorcycles for entertainment. We were contacted by numerous citizens of KwaDukuza to set the record straight…. Burton Paliam, Claude Joseph & the rest of the bikers from DCB… Editors note: Subject matter now closed

Shakaskraal Secondary School to introduce Agricultural Science in 2015 By Xpress Reporter Shakaskraal Secondary school will reintroduce the Agricultural Science for students in grade ten from 2014. This will be the only school in the iLlembe District to offer the subject. Head Office from the Department of Education has identified the school for the upgrading of resources. The school will model the subject on the lines of Landbou College in Vryheid and Weston College in Mooi River. The school has emphasized that it has the necessary infrastructure to commence

with learners in Grade ten, although noteworthy improvements will commence shortly. This new introduction in the Curriculum come as Government is doing everything in its power to alter negative perception concerning farmers and farming as a result of an ever increasing demand for food and the challenge to produce it. The government also want to show students that farming can be lucrative as it was proven in a recent study that only two percent of our population actually have qualifications in farming.

Mama Money The White Wizard

Prof. Yisa And Mama Koshay

I used MAGIC RING to pay my debts : the sheriffs department debt collectors have been harassing me for 3 years due to debts that have been lingering with me, other events happened including cutting off my electricity (power). Telephone line and water supply. I was blacklisted. I can’t get loan anywhere. This was putting a strain on my family especially my son who was an alcoholic & not employed which led him taking drugs. I was so stressed and my life was down, but one day I heard about Prof Yisa and Mama Koshay on radio. I took his number and decided to contact him. We set an appointment and I could not believe they showed me my enemies in a white pot. They prayed for me and also gave me a casino magic ring, every machine I played I won a jackpot. KSST hammer Randsons in EZE’S Electrical KO Cup

KSST annihilated Randsons to clinch the EZE'S Electrical KO

INTRODUCING Innovation that excites

KSST have secured yet another knock out silverware this season when they dismantled their arch rivals, Randsons in straight sets to add the EZE'S Electrical KO Cup to their collection. The finals of the tournament held under the aegis of the Stanger and District Volleyball Association did not live up to its billing as it turned out to be a onesided affair. In contrast, the battle for the third and fourth place play-off was a more ball-by-ball thriller. The normally consistent Randsons were out off sorts and never really tested the KSST squad who hammered the ball with ease past

their opponents. Randsons did not even seem to have a game plan coming into the finals. KSST dominated them in all departments. The poor back play and passes, the lackadaisical attitude of the players and the numerous unforced errors were the downfall of Randsons. A highly disappointed manager, Aslam Randeree said that this was the worst performance of a Randsons team right from the clubs inception. As usual, big hitting Cameron Singh, centre Damien 'Shrek' Peters and play maker Sherwin Daniels were responsible for the demise of Randsons. They were well supported

by Lionel Jali playing in the utility role. There is nothing much to write home about the Randsons players. KSST romped home to a convincing 25-10, 25-11 victory in a very one-sided final. In a thrilling fight for a podium finish, Warriors Sport pulled out all the stops and decimated Grove End from the start of the match.
