S.A mourns the loss of an icon
ANC stalwart Ahmed Kathrada passes on The Ahmed Kathrada Foundation is deeply saddened to announce the passing on of ANC veteran Ahmed Kathrada (87) this morning, at the Donald Gordon Hospital in Johannesburg. Kathrada passed away peacefully after a short period of illness, following surgery to the brain. Neeshan Balton, Executive Director of the Ahmed Kathrada Foundation, confirmed that the anti-apartheid struggle veteran “breathed his last today”. “This is great loss to the ANC, the broader liberation movement and South Africa as a whole. Internationally, he was staunch in his support for the Palestinian struggle. 'Kathy' was an inspiration to millions in different parts of the world,” said Balton. Kathrada Foundation Chairperson, Derek Hanekom, was overcome with emotion saying he has lost a “revolutionary mentor and dear friend”. “Comrade Kathy was a gentle, humane and humble soul. He was a determined revolutionary who gave his entire life to the liberation struggle in our country,” he added. Kathrada will be buried according to Muslim religious rights, details of which will be

He was born on 21 August prison with hard labour 1929 in rural Schweizer-Reneke suspended for two years - for and was introduced to politics as o r g a n i s i n g t h e D e f i a n c e a young boy when he joined a Campaign against six unjust, non-racial youth club run by the apartheid laws. The campaign was jointly organised by the Young Communist League. At the tender age of 17, ANC and SA Indian Congress.
In 1954, Kathrada was placed under restrictions by apartheid security police and was arrested several times for breaking his banning orders. In 1956, he was among the 156 Congress activists and leaders charged for High Treason. The trial continued for four years after which all the accused were acquitted. Kathrada, Mandela and Sisulu were among the last 30 to be acquitted. While they were on trial in 1960, the ANC and PAC were banned. In 1962, Kathrada was placed under “house arrest”. The following year Kathrada broke his banning orders and went underground to continue his political and military work in the ANC's armed wing, Umkhonto we Sizwe (MK). In July 1963, the police swooped on Liliesleaf Farm in Rivonia, a Johannesburg suburb where Kathrada and other banned persons had been meeting secretly. This led to the famous Rivonia Trial in which eight accused were sentenced to life imprisonment with hard labour on Robben Island. His fellow prisoners included ANC leaders such as Mandela, Sisulu, Govan Mbeki, Raymond Mhlaba, Denis Goldberg, Elias Motsoaledi and Andrew Mlangeni. Kathrada spent 26 years and 3 months in prison, 18 of which were on Robben Island. In 1982, Mandela, Sisulu, Kathrada,
Mhlaba and Mlangeni were transferred to Pollsmoor Prison in Cape Town. While in prison he obtained four university degrees, namely, BA (in History and Criminology), B Bibliography (in African Politics and Library Science), BA Honours (History) and BA Honours (African Politics). Soon after his release on 15 October 1989, the ANC was unbanned. At its first legal conference in South Africa, Kathrada was elected onto its National Executive Committee. Until 1994, he headed the ANC's Public Relations Department. At its Conference in 1997, Kathrada declined nomination to the National Executive Committee. In 1992, Kathrada undertook
the Islamic Haj pilgrimage to Mecca in Saudi Arabia. In 1994, Kathrada was elected to Parliament and served as President Mandela's Parliamentary Counsellor. He was chairperson of the Robben Island Museum Council from 1997 until his term expired in 2006. In 2008, the Ahmed Kathrada Foundation was launched with the aim of deepening nonracialism. Kathrada was an active participant in the Foundation's work, which includes promoting Constitutional ideals and human rights, youth leadership and development, challenging racism and preserving and promoting liberation history. Kathrada's activism spanned a total of 75 years. ICONIC: Nelson Mandela and Ahmed Kathrada

Groutville High benefits from joint venture By Xpress Reporter
The Sibaya Community Trust and the Noma Gigaba Foundation joined forces to provide a much-needed multi-purpose Assembly Area for Groutville High School. The unveiling of the newly built structure took place on Monday, 27 March 2017. Sibaya Community Trust
Chairman, Mr Tristan Kaatze said despite the school having a long and cherished history, it was short of space for students to congregate and participate in activities under the cover of a roof. “We were approached by the Noma Gigaba Foundation and immediately agreed that this facility was needed. We built the structure in a manner that
would allow it to be used for both educational and recreational purposes. “In fact it can also be used as a community facility for meetings and social gatherings. Education is an integral component of our strategy at Sibaya Community Trust and we are glad to be of assistance to the people of Groutville,” he said.
UNVEILING: Seen are Sibaya Community Trust chairman, Mr. Tristan Kaatze; Deputy Mayor of KwaDukuza Municipality, Cllr. Dolly Govender; renowned businessman, Mr. Vivian Reddy; Philanthropist Mrs. Noma Gigaba and Minister of Home Affairs Mr. Malusi Gigaba during the unveiling of the new assembly point at Groutville High School
NGF chairperson, Mrs Gigaba said her Foundation was committed to providing assistance to schools in impoverished areas. “NGF directs its attention at South Africa's urgent and forgotten realities, with a specific focus on schools and education in poor
communities. We are able to achieve this through the creation of strategic partnerships with selected corporates. “Taking this into consideration, the Groutville High School project was particularly relevant. After being alerted by staff of the
shortage of space, I approached the Sibaya Community Trust, and after deliberation, they acceded to our request and pledged R1.2-million to the project. We are very thankful that they have assisted this worthy cause,” she said.

RADICAL: Members of the ANCYL marching towards Ballito Junction Regional Mall to submit a memorandum to the mall's management.
Continued from page 1
protesters started throwing stones at the mall while others stormed into the mall ignoring the call by the March leaders to back off as the memorandum had already been signed. Security guards managed to keep them at bay but one of the gates was forced open and a handful of protesters managed to get in. ANCYL regional secretary, Musa Zondi condemned the actions of those who threw
stones and forced their way into the mall saying as the organisers of the march they did not give orders for anyone to do so. “The march we had was very peaceful. Those who were doing such (throwing stones and storming into the mall) were doing so in their individual capacity as we did not mandate them to do so. As the ANCYL we condemn such behaviour and they must face the law for their actions” said Zondi who further commented that in any march there are always people looking
to pursue their own interests. Despite the mayhem, Umhlali SAPS spokesperson Vinny Pillay said there were no casualties reported. Furthermore; according to Managing Director at Ballito Junction Regional Mall, Kathryn Payton three infrastructures were damaged during the protest. “Damage on Ballito Junction property following the ANCYL march included fencing, landscaping and parking boom infrastructure. At this stage the value of the damage is unknown.”

New look Ballito Junction opens in style
By Xpress Reporter The much talked about Ballito Junction Regional Mall finally opened its doors on Thursday, 23 March 2017, putting an end to four years of waiting. The opening day drew over 60 000 visitors and for the first four days of opening the foot traffic totaled 250 000 visitors. The elegant mall is an expansion of the previous 10,000sqm shopping centre and has been developed into a massive 80, 000sqm. Scores of patrons took to the mall looking to feast on the grand opening specials offered by various stores within the mall. However; the main event of the day was the official opening and ribbon cutting ceremony which was attended by among others, his worship Mayor of KwaDukuza Municipality, Councillor Ricardo Mthembu; KwaDukuza Municipality Deputy Mayor, Cllr Dolly Govendor and Minister of Public Service and Administration, Ngoako
Ramatlhodi. Patrick Flanagan of Flanagan and Gerard, a company which codeveloped the mall was the first to address the ceremony attendees and poured water over the heated issue of the inclusion of local people into the project. “It will be foolish of us not to work with the youth of this community. There is an artwork store and space given freely to local people where they sell their work. We have showed our commitment to local people and this development will act as a catalyst to other huge developments. Infrastructure is the seed of development. “Ballito Junction Regional Mall is a shopping experience of distinct for the community of KwaDukuza and the entire ILembe district. It is an asset that everyone can be proud of,” said Flanagan. KwaDukuza Mayor, Cllr. Ricardo Mthembu thanked all the stakeholders who helped to make the refurbishment of the mall a

KwaDukuza mourned the loss of GV Naidoo (popularly known as Uncle Jimmy) after suffering a short illness at the Stanger Hospital on Tuesday, March 21 (Human Rights Day). Naidoo was an outstanding sports administrator and a man with a big heart who believed in service to mankind through his philanthropic lifestyle. He represented the Stanger Government State Indian Schools in soccer and cricket. Naidoo was born in Nyoni (near Amatikulu) and served as an educator in Doringkop, Tugela and Amatikulu. He worked at the CNS Minerals in Stanger as an admin clerk in the 1940's working alongside the late legendary boxing trainer, Chin Govender. He represented Stanger in the senior ranks in

It is in line with what President Jacob Zuma spoke about in the State of the Nation Address that we must
partner with the private sector in order to create jobs,” said Mthembu. “We would also like to invite many more other investors to come on board and develop something more like the ICC (International Convention Centre) so that people will come from the King Shaka Airport into
Ballito Junction Mall for shopping and then also have their meetings here,” further said the mayor who also alluded on the fact that the ballito junction mall will contribute a lot as a rate payer which will enable the municipality to provide for its dwellers.

World Hearing Day is commemorated on 3 March. This is a day dedicated to highlighting the concerns regarding hearing and hearing loss. It is a global initiative launched by the world health organization to assist in establishing a sound understanding of hearing, hearing loss and its effects. To support this initiative, the Stanger Hospital Audiology Department partnered with HESTO Harnesses, a Community Based Company, which
has a staff compliment of approximately 2000 workers. Ms. Akira Harribarran (CSO: Audiologist) under the guidance of resident audiologists embarked on this initiative which proved to be a resounding success. In addition to this, Talk Sign Day was also incorporated into the program for the staff encouraging and educating the public on the importance and the recognition of South African Sign language. REFLECTIONS OF THE SOUL Forgiveness is the key to healing yourself from the past... A woman once asked me: “Do I really need to forgive all those who have hurt me in order to heal and move on?” So this was my reply: When you hold grudges and resentment, all it does is drain you of your energy and weigh you down. You become stuck in the past and trapped in all of life's dramas. In this state of being, you become susceptible to all kinds of physical illnesses and diseases. A part of you dies inside when you fail to forgive and forget. Withholding forgiveness from the person that has hurt you is the same as punishing them, while drinking the poison yourself. Forgiveness sets you free from the bondage of hurt and pain, and also sets the perpetrators free. The most commendable act is the genuine display of love and kindness towards those who have hurt you in the past. Your pure soul, the best part of you, loves to forgive and transcend the vicious cycle of pain and suffering. Only your ego wishes to hold on to the story of victimhood. Once you choose to forgive, you raise yourself to a higher state of being, setting you free from the state of suffering. True forgiveness is one of the most healing, releasing and freeing gifts you can give to yourself. It is not just an expression of the lips but is something felt deep in the heart. If you can overlook the shortcomings of people who have either hurt you or let you down in life, then that is a clear indication of 'true forgiveness'.
Freedom from anger and resentment allows you to heal past wounds and move towards a brighter future with fresh new beginnings. Self forgiveness is the height of compassion. Sometimes it is easier to forgive others' wrongdoings than to forgive yourself. You tend to be so hard on yourself, always blaming and loathing yourself. You have become your greatest inner critique, judging and beating yourself up over past mistakes. It is now time to stop all forms of self abuse, let go of the blame game and forgive yourself whole heartedly. Forgiveness is indeed the pathway to healing and it requires humility and an open heart to truly forgive. You gain insight and wisdom behind each experience on the journey of life, no matter how difficult it seems. When you look at the rainbow after a storm, you feel rejuvenated and uplifted. Likewise, once true forgiveness takes place, your soul is uplifted to a new dimension, colouring your life with inner peace, acceptance and contentment. JOURNEY THERAPY uses the principle of forgiveness to let go of the past, and assists you in appreciating life in the present, transforming you to an elevated state of wholeness and freedom. You alone hold the key to your own FREEDOM... the choice is yours!

XPress Manor Primary observes World Water Day
KWADUKUZA MUNICIPALITY MN37/2017 INVITATION TO PROVIDE INPUTS/SUGGESTIONS TOWARDS IMPROVING AND UNDERSTANDING THE DEVELOPMENT AND BUILDING PLAN APPROVAL PROCESS. The KwaDukuza Municipality has one of the fastest growing economies in South Africa. While all efforts, processes and procedures to ensure that the Municipality increases its growth rate are in place and adhered to, there are various challenges at hand.
CONSERVE WATER: Learners at Stanger Manor Primary School commemorated World Water Day on 22 March 2017. Seen are some of the learners with educator, Mrs Sewnath
The Economic Development and Planning Department has learnt through public consultations (Complaints), that its Clients (Developers, Consultants, Planners and Property Owners) perceived the KwaDukuza Municipality as non-developmental, due to various challenges experienced with regards to the overall developments as well as the ambiguous process of the Development and Building Plans Applications.
Human Rights Programme at Isenembe Secondary
In terms of Chapter 7, Section 152 (1) of the Constitution of South Africa, Local Government is obligated to promote Social and Economic Development to its communities within their respective areas of jurisdiction, which same is also supported by other relevant pieces of legislation and policies. As means of adhering to the requirements of the aforementioned Legislations and addressing the challenges of the Clients, the Council has concluded a questionnaire related to the challenges, in view of collectively attending to and addressing same going forward. This notification therefore serves as an invitation to all Stakeholders/Clients involved in the DEVELOPMENT WITHIN THE JURISDICTION OF THE KWADUKUZA MUNICIPALITY, to provide their inputs/suggestions on how to better improve and for the municipality to provide more knowledge on the Development and Building Plan Application Process to its Stakeholders/Clients. This should be done by means of filling in a questionnaire which is available at the following sites: KwaDukuza and Salt Rock Offices Counter. Please note that the questionnaire may also be requested from and returned to the following e-mail addresses: MavaN@kwadukuza.gov.za andNompiloL@kwadukuza.gov.za. Please note that the Counters of both Offices operate from Mondays to Fridays - 8:00 AM to 12:30 PM. Please note that the questionnaires are available at the counters of both sites until the 21st of April 2017 @ 15:00 PM and that the Stakeholders/Clients are requested to fill in the questionnaires and deposit same on to boxes provided at the counters. For enquiries please contact Mr. Mava Ntanta on 032 437 5032/ 5580 during office hours. NJ MDAKANE MUNICIPAL MANAGER

The question on every local soccer lover and KwaDukuza United Soccer Club supporter's lips are: CAN IT BE DONE AGAIN? Just a fortnight ago, local outfit, KwaDukuza United, known as 'The Black Leopards', astounded the soccer fraternity beating Professional Soccer League (PSL) club, Ajax Cape Town 4-3 on penalties (2-2 after full time) sending the visitors crushing out of the Nedbank Challenge, the equivalent of the English premier league FA cup. More surprising was that our local club, plying their trade 4 division lower in the ABC Motsepe Regional league, made history moving into the last 16 of the competition. They now face another giant-killing prospect when they were drawn at home against the mighty Supersport United who are 3rd in the league, have just

made it into the next round of the Africa Confederation Cup and are the reigning Nedbank Challenge Cup winners that opened their way into Africa. The local heroes face an uphill battle when they face off against the giants next Tuesday, 4 April. Unfortunately for local supporters, the local Recreation Grounds have been ruled unsuitable and the game will be played at Sugar Ray Xulu Stadium, a clear message to the authorities. However, management of KwaDukuza are quietly hopeful of causing another major upset in this lucrative tournament and urged locals to make their way to the Sugar Ray Xulu Stadium as they said that it was the vocal support of the loyal local supporters that carried them this far in this tournament.
