KwaDukuza Police “turn guns” on crime hotspots By Musa Mnyandu

waDukuza SAPS station commander Brigadier SF Mhlongo is serious about eradicating crime, even from within police ranks. At least that is according to the adamant position she articulated at an anti-crime meeting on Friday 26 March 2021, at Groutville Community Hall in Ward 29. The meeting included virtually the entire management of KwaDukuza SAPS, police detectives and crime analysts. The police delegation met with community leaders from KwaDukuza's perennial crime hotspots. Ntshawini identified as one of crime spots in KwaDukuza Continued from Page 1 said "rotten apples" within the police were the cause of a widening trust deficit between police and the community. "If our people keep bringing complaints about the conduct of the men and women in blue, we will be looking at you and expecting answers," she said. She also raised serious concerns about the efficiency of the local police's communications department. She said erratic information flow from the side of the police was doing very little to prop up sagging public confidence in

the police. Cllr Cele said the main cause of crime in Groutville was drug related activity. He said drug cartels were now operating freely, leading to increased violence. The areas is famous for stabbings and of late, gun battles. "Whoonga and cocaine are the main drugs that are being sold in this area. And drug dealers have informants within the police, making it hard to stage surprise raids against them," he said. Statistics show that in the fiscal year to the end of March 2021, the area of KwaDukuza

"Certainly the unbanning of liquor sales has resulted in assault GBH cases being reported. Sadly the number of complainants who return to the police station to withdraw reported assault cases is also very high. "Engaging the youth will also be vital. Leaders will play a role in mobilizing youth through sports and music events, and then police will be

She further warned that if any of her officers were implicated in crime, stern action would be taken. A follow up meeting will be convened soon to strengthen the cooperation between police and the community, and to revive CPF structures across the policing precinct.

A number of businesses in KwaDukuza CBD have raised their concerns over an eye sore state of the prison garden located between Balcom Street and Hullet Street. Business owners alleged that the area attracts criminal activities. A business owner who asked to remain anonymous said the overgrown grass in the garden offer refuge to criminals and other illegal activities, “It has been a while

since the garden was cleaned up, criminals operating in the CBD usually use this place as their hide out spot. Some items were stolen from my property and criminals used the garden as their escape route,” cited the business owner. The grass in the garden has grown to a height of about two metres. “The overgrown grass makes it easy for criminals to gain access into people's businesses and they also use the bushes to hide. My property has also been

targeted a couple of times,” added the business owner. Apart from criminal activities, the business owner said the garden has also become a health hazard as human waste can be spotted near the fence, “We appeal to relevant authorities to ensure that the garden is well maintained,” added the business man. Attempts to find a comment from Stanger Correctional Service were unsuccessful.

South Africans are shocked by the announcement made by, Epidemiologist Professor Salim Abdool Karim who had announced on Thursday,25 march 2021, he will returning to his academic commitments after his term as co-chair of the covid19 Ministerial advisory committee (MAC) comes to an end. “It has been a singular honour to serve on the MAC alongside exceptional colleagues. After exactly 1 year, the time has come for me to return to my academic commitments. As I leave to refocus on HIV research, I know full well that advice on our Covid-19 response is in safe hands,” Karim said. “From April I will be re-focusing on my HIV research, especially on broadly neutralising antibodies for HIV prevention which is at a critical stage but have slowed as I have not been able to devote time and effort to it,” added Karim Last year at the start of the pandemic the first weeks of a hard lock down was frightening, Karim helped million South Africans understand what laid ahead. A heroic service in itself, quite apart from his influence on life-saving policies. The advisory committee has been providing information and recommendations on managing cases of covid19.Interventions To control the spread of the disease, communication strategies, the research agenda and the impact of the disease on the country's economy. Health minister Zweli Mkhize has commend Abdool Karim on handling of the pandemic and ability to explain complex issues. “Throughout, he has remained focused, level-headed, calm and compassionate. Even under enormous pressure, Prof Abdool Karim always received everyone with his warm smile and reassuring presence,” Mkhize said.

Aggrieved property owners have time to object
Valuation roll is ready for inspection, any owner of the property who so desires to object on a specific property may do so by lodging an objection with the municipal manager including the category of property no later than the 30 April 2021. Prescribed forms for objections are available from the municipal offices. The completed objection forms must be posted, by registered mail to: The Municipal Manage P.O. Box 72, KwaDukuza, 4450 or email to municipal manager@ kwadukuza.gov.za. You could also hand deliver to the municipal offices. For queries contact the offices on 032 4375564/5554/5561/5524. Website www.kwadukuza.gov.za. Valuation roll open for inspections at Libraries in KwaDukuza and the municipal offices.
The above is only an example based on the current calculation rate per rand and projection if it remains the same. However, this could change when the council finally adopts the budget and rates increase should there be any. The council has yet to make a determination on the cent amount in the rand rate. We included Ilembe sewer rates also as a projection since sewer is based on the valuation of property and has direct impact. Ilembe also has yet to make a determination which could change. It be noted after following due process it will be implemented from the 1 July 2021 (new financial year). Further to the valuation roll increase on property values in different categories KwaDukuza Municipality further proposes 14. 49 % increase on electricity and 4 % increase on refuse. Ilembe District Municipality has proposed 7 % increase on water and sewer. Public participation is of utmost importance before the budget and tariff increases is adopted by council. Have your say?
