CBD crime escalates The recent spate of crime in the KwaDukuza central business district has urged law enforcement officials to warn citizens to be vigilant at all times. SAPS has also issued a warning about armed robbers pretending to work for the SABC, wanting to inspect homes for the number of television sets in the household, and to check the license for each television. Citizens are urged to be cautious. There have been numerous reports of theft and mugging incidents in the CBD, and the community is encouraged to take measures to avoid becoming a victim. Here are a few safety tips: • Be aware that you could be a victim at any time • Do not park in dark, unattended areas • Stay alert and pay attention to your surroundings • Have your keys in hand when

STREET: An image taken from Google Maps of Chief Albert Luthuli Street before it was narrowed down to three lanes
By Xpress Reporter
KwaDukuza businesses located on Chief Albert Luthuli Street have raised their concerns with regards to the three-lane road. According to various business owners, the road previously had four lanes until 2010, when it was narrowed down to three lanes. “The three lanes disrupt the flow of traffic resulting in unnecessary congestion in the CBD. Our delivery trucks or customers can
no longer find a parking spot without causing traffic congestion,” said one of the business owners. KwaDukuza Municipality Media Liaison officer, Sipho Mkhize, cited that the municipality has measures in place to combat this issue. “Please note that there are plans in place to rehabilitate Chief Albert Luthuli Street, these have been presented by the Civil
Engineering and Human Settlements Business Unit during the current IDP Review Roadshows,” said Mkhize. “A specific meeting was held for the business operators in the KwaDukuza CBD wherein the aforementioned plan was applauded, to me it's unjustifiable that suddenly business located in King Shaka Street have concerns that they want addressed through the media,” added Mkhize.

This is with regards to the shock revelations of the dismal 1.4% conviction rate of the KwaDukuza Police Station as Macpherson's relentless effort to compel Minister Cele to come to KwaDukuza and address the dire situation continues

Riya's Dance Academy together with the Xpress Times wish all Hindus a Happy Diwali
Throughout the world, the very colourful and auspicious festival of Diwali is celebrated by millions of Hindus. It is further attributed by deep feeling of universal brotherhood, goodwill and unity. It serves to remind us that good will always triumph over evil. Diwali is the most popular of all Hindu festivals. Swami Sivananda once said “ Diwali have come and gone but the hearts of many people are as dark as the night of the new moon”. How true people are racing for material accomplishment and ignoring spiritual development which is the ultimate purpose of every Hindu in God-realisation. Lets adjust and make meaningful contribution to the upliftment of society. Diwali marks the victory of good over evil. Deepavali means an array of lights and signifies the victory of brightness over darkness. It is through the light that the beauty of this world is revealed and experienced. To Hindus darkness represent ignorance and light is a metaphor for knowledge. The lighting of diyas (clay lamps) symbolizes the destruction of evil forces, wickedness, violence, anger, injustice, oppression and suffering. The lighting of lamps also in a way help us to pay obeisance to God

for attainment of good health, wealth , knowledge and peace. Diwali is celebrated for many different reasons but the best known to all Hindus it marks the return of Lord Rama, King of Ayodhya, with his wife Sita and brother Lakshman from a 14 year exile and a war in which he vanquished the demon king Ravana. On Diwali , the goddess Lakshmi a symbol of prosperity is worshipped for peace and happiness. Gifts and sweetmeats are shared followed by the lighting of firecrackers. Hindus must maintain their rich legacy and cultural identify. This festival underpins the ideals of caring, sharing and understanding. Diwali celebration transcends the barriers of race, gender, creed, socio-economic factors and status. An African proverb says”The sun of yesterday may have set, but its light will enlighten our future days.” Live in the moment yesterday was history, today is victory and tomorrow is mystery. Like the sun and moon we must complete our life's journey by assisting one another and not harming each other. On behalf of the Shree Hanuman Temple Group we wish all Hindus a Blessed Diwali. Use firework with extra care and enjoy the day. Spiritual Head of the Shree Hanuman Temple Group Madhun Sobram Sing

Indentured labourers
Advertise in times
These pictures were taken 60 years ago in 1957 by the late Uncle Ranjith Kally. These pictures highlight the not too distant past of child labour and economic exploitation at its worst. By the 1950s, mostly Indian children were working on the sugarcane farms. They earned ten pence per day for eight hours of work. That is what young Indian children earned on the Kwa-Zulu Natal sugar fields, the fields on which the country's 'green gold' still grows. Hundreds of these child workers were employed in the fields planting, fertilising and weeding sugar cane. Some of them were not yet ten years old. Today these fields house luxurious golf estates and continue to yield economic prosperity for individuals and companies that exploited these children. Let us always be reminded of the sacrifices made in creating a 'better life' for all our citizens. Text by Selvan Naidoo Photographs by Ranjith Kally

HANDOVER: Seen is KDM Deputy Mayor, Cllr Dolly Govender; Monica Nonhlanhla Zondo (crèche supervisor); parents and children during the creche handover in Driefontein
KwaDukuza Deputy Mayor Cllr. Dolly Govender on Tuesday, 30 October 2018, handed over an Early Childhood Development Facility in Driefontein, Ward 21. The construction site handover was done on 19th June 2017 and the Early Childhood Development Facility construction was completed on the 19th September 2018. The amount spent during the construction is R1 081 773.00 which included professional fees. This project created some seven job opportunities for the
community. Speaking at the handover, KwaDukuza Deputy Mayor, Dolly Govender cited that as caring government, they try by all means to better the lives of South Africans especially those who come from disadvantaged backgrounds. “We are pleased that we are handing over the crèche today to the community of Driefontein. We strongly believe that our children will have a better training under this shelter,” said Govender.
“It is a pity that Cllr. du Toit who along with his party the DA requested MEC Weziwe Thusi to open this facility is not with us to witness the grand opening of this facility,” added Govender. The Driefontein Early Childhood Development Facility will be used for the development of some 60 disadvantaged children, whose parents leave home in the early hours of the morning to seek work in plantations and construction sites.

Mental Health Awareness Month By Xpress Reporter
The month of October has been declared Mental Health Awareness Month with the objective of not only educating the public about mental health but also to reduce the stigma and discrimination that people with mental illness are often
subjected to. Mental health problems, such as depression, anxiety, substance abuse and job stress are common, affecting individuals, their families and co-workers, and the broader community. In addition, they have a direct impact on workplaces through increased
absenteeism, reduced productivity, and increased costs. Very few South Africans seek treatment for their mental disorders. Mental illness can be treated at your nearest clinic, hospital or healthcare provider. Mental health problems are the result of a complex
interplay between biological, psychological, social and environmental factors. There is increasing evidence that both the content and context of work can play a role in the development of mental health problems in the workplace. Key factors include: • workload (both excessive
and insufficient work) • lack of participation and control in the workplace • monotonous or unpleasant tasks • role ambiguity or conflict • lack of recognition at work • inequity • poor interpersonal relationships • poor working conditions • poor leadership
YOLO programme at ML Sultan Secondary
and communication • conflicting home and work demands. Whilst the workplace can contribute positively to a person's mental health, it may also exacerbate an existing problem, or may contribute to the development of a mental health problem. Mental illness can be treated and prevented. If you suspect a mental illness, visit your nearest clinic or doctor.

MAMA ALISHA THANKS ALOT MAMA ALISHA I am Salashnee from Shakaville Stanger. I’m here to thank Mama Alisha for helping me sell my property at a reasonable price. I was a proud Mother of 3 kids and was happily married. But my life turned upside down in 2014 when I lost all my 3 kids and their father in a road accident. I survived because I was at work that day. Since then I have panic attacks, My families memories were killing me and I decided to sell the house in 2015. Many people used to call come see the house but they don’t come back up to when I went to MAMA ALISHA after reading about her in the newspaper. She came to the house , blessed it and told me she will do the rest at her place of work. I was surprised when just in two weeks a buyer was found and I was given a reasonable amount of money. Kalia destroys Flipside on debut Ishan Kalia, making his debut for Dawnheights Cricket Club in the iLembe Cricket Union 50 over league played at Umhlali Prep last Sunday, put up a fivestar performance with bat and ball to lead Dawnheights to a convincing win over Flipside. Kalia claimed a 5-wicket haul and contributed 21 not out runs to break the back of Flipside. Ishan Kalia opened the bowling taking 2 wickets in his opening over and 1 in his second and another in his third. Edges and miss-hits from all the batsmen carried effortlessly to the boundaries resulting in a high run rate and kept the scoreboard ticking over. A 53 run 5th wicket stand between S. Veeramajoo and N Singh kept the Dawnheights bowlers at bay with some big hits mixed with some streaky boundaries. Veeramajoo fell to
Can there be anything more exciting than a cricket match ending in a tie after 100 overs have been bowled? This can also happen in a 5-day test. How many of us can forget the first tied test in the history of cricket that took place in December 1960? You will have to be over sixty to recall this momentous event that took place in Brisbane in the match between West Indies and Australia. The last Australian pair were going for the third and winning run when a magnificent return from the boundary by the late Conrad Hunte

the bowling of Y Banda with a catch on the boundary by manof-the-match Ishan Kalia. Ishan was brought back into the attack and with his first ball completed his 5 wicket haul. Wickets kept falling thereby resulting in Flipside being all out in the 21st over, setting a target of 161 for Dawnheights. Malcolm Naidoo and Shivaan Singh opened the batting and in the 3rd over Flipside removed M Naidoo. Shivaan fell on 41. Captain A Ramduth fell on 26 and lunch was taken with Dawnheights on 115/4 after 17 overs. Ishan (21 not out) capped a remarkable 50 over debut, joined Raj at the crease and they decided to finish the match with some aggressive, big hitting. Raj Verma ended on 51 not out that saw Dawnheights win by 5 wickets.

ran out Ian Meckiff by yards to secure a tie. Thereafter, many matches in the different forms have ended in such fashion. Last week, in the 2nd ODI between India and the West Indies in Visakhapatnam, the Windies required 322 runs to win and as the match neared the tail-end, the Windies seemed to be cantering along to an easy victory with Shai Hope, the centurion, at the crease.

TVGB, making their appearance in the KwaDukuza Volleyball this season, continued their impressive form when they secured a berth in the finals of the Moon & Sons knock out tournament against Sunbrook to be played tomorrow (Thursday) at the association courts at Stanger High. Darnall United who were joint favourites to reach the finals with TVGB but things did not go as planned as TVGB had to settle for runner up spot in their group after losing to Sunbrook whilst Darnall secured top spot in theirs. This meant that the joint favourites had to meet in the semi final last Thursday. In a thrilling encounter, TVGB beat Darnall 2-1 to advance to the final, thus preventing Darnall from defending the crown they won last season. The surprise package of the
Sunday in the first ODI in Perth. Three ODIs and one T20 international will be played. This is another opportunity for a number of players to catch the eye of the selectors before the squad for the 2019 World Cup is announced sometimes towards the end of March next year. It is hoped that the beleaguered Aussies can provide worthwhile opposition to the highriding Proteas. But at home the Green Baggies are another proposition. We eagerly await this tour after the shenanigans in South Africa earlier in the year. Two crowd-pulling derbies took place over the weekend, albeit in two different continents. In SA it was the Soweto Derby between Orlando Pirates and Kaizer Chiefs where almost 85,000 spectators witnessed an exciting game in which there were goals (for a change). The Buccaneers emerged victorious 2-1 in spite of missing a penalty. In the El Clasico at the Nou Camp, Barcelona (sans Lionel Messi) hammered Real Madrid without Christiano Ronaldo for the first time after 9 years 5-1 with Luis Suarez bagging a hat-trick. Real

tournament was the youthful Heights (under the guidance of Neren 'Bob' Reddy) who secured a semi final berth after finishing second in their group). They made it an all Stanger Heights derby when they faced Sunbrook in the other semi final. Heights were not disgraced as they took the game to their more illustrious opponents but had to succumb to the experience of Sunbrook, going down 2-1. The Sharks pulled one over last year's champion, Western Province, at a hot and sizzling Newlands, beating them 17-12 in the Currie Cup. It was sweet revenge for the defeat they suffered also at home in last year's final. It was richly-deserved as they outscored their opponents by 2 tries to nothing. With so many Springboks in both teams, it was going to be a tight contest and so it turned out to be. It was not the most spectacular of games as it turned out to be a stop-start affair punctuated by errors made even more difficult by the weather conditions. Attention now turns to the Springboks' outgoing tour to Europe that begins with the test against England on Saturday. Until the next time, have a happy sporting week.

BEYOND THE TOUCHLINE
But then a few tight overs by the Indian seamers pulled the game back. At the start of the last over the Windies required 10 and off the last ball 5. A six would ensure a win and a boundary a tie. In the end it was the latter and another memorable match in the annals of the game. Meanwhile, another milestone was achieved. Virat Kohli, the Indian talisman and captain, became the fastest batsman to reach 10,000 runs in ODIs (in 205 innings) and his 38th century in this form of the game. In doing so he surpassed the legendary Sachin Tendulkar who took 259 innings to do so. India's reliance on him is such that after his dismissal Have you been seriously injured in a motor in the 3rd ODI for 107, they vehicle accident or the victim of possible could not chase down 284 runs for victory, losing by 43 medical negligence? runs. Singh's Fireworks Team put up a colourful display ahead of Deepavali (next Wednesday) when they annihilated Red Gold Darts Club last Wednesday at Quartz Sports bar in the Strini Motors Darts league hosted by KwaDukuza Darts Association. In the opening team games (1001), Singh's took a commanding 3-0 lead. The Singh's team comprising of Meersing Sobram, Ajen Singh, Paddy Padayachee and Sanjay Singh continued their rich vein in the doubles game. Meersing and Ajen teamed up and beat Bradley Naidoo and Sashen Naidoo
to take the score line to 4-1. Paddy and Sanjay beat Keven and Ashton to take the scores to 5-0. With four singles game to go Red Gold Darts Club had to salvage some pride. In the opening game Meersing beat Bradley to take the scores to 6-0 in favour of Singh's Fireworks. The second game saw Ajen Singh loose his game to Sashen to give Red Gold Team some hope to save a white wash and take the scores to 6-1. However Paddy Padayachee and Sanjay Singh left no stones unturned and won the next two games to give Singh's Fireworks Team a
resounding 8-1 win. In the other game played, the f i r e w o r k s continued when Quartz Darts Club took on the high riding Darnall United Team. In the opening team game Quartz surprised the Darnall lads to win the first game to take a 1-0 lead. The second game saw the Quartz team win again to lead 2-0. In the third game the Darnall United Team got their act together and won the set to trail 2-1. The Quartz Team led by Leon Moonsamy and Julian Munisamy had to take on V i n e s h Geanballey and Jerry Govender in the doubles game. This was a real humdinger as the Darnall pair won the first set to level the scores to 2-2. The second game saw Nine Pillay and Jerry Arunachellum beat Tridev Singh and Rowen Pillay to forge ahead 3-2. With four singles game to go the Darnall lads put up a five star performance and won all four singles game to win. Tonight will be a real humdinger as Dhan's Auto lock horns against Darnall United with both teams chasing the league title while Singh's Fireworks play Quartz Darts Club and Red Gold are the team on duty.

iLembe lose in T20 final iLembe Cricket Club brought honour to the iLembe Cricket Union by getting to the final for the third time since having a representative team in the KwaZulu Natal Cricket Union Challenge League, unfortunately, the team lost to Southern Natal by 40 runs. The final was held a Kingsmead, Durban this past Sunday. iLembe had to contend with playing against Alveiro Nadasen, one of iLembe's prolific all rounder who now plies his trade for Southern Natal. Southern Natal won the toss and sent iLembe to field after deciding to bat. Under very hot conditions, Southern Natal amassed 152/7 in their allotted 20 overs. A. Lombard was flamboyant with the bat for Southern Natal scoring with 33. There were valuable c o n t r i b u t i o n s f r o m G. Lawrence (23 not out), S. Kalkapersad (23) and M. Bishop (17). The main contributor with ball for iLembe was N. Yousaf who claimed 2 scalps for 43 from 4 overs. Others that contributed were R. Mhlongo (1/21), S. Logenathan (1/24) and S. Sadayan (1/28). In reply, iLembe were bundled out for 112 in the 20th
over. Yousaf once again was the star batter with 27. I. Sher (19), Y. Ismail (18) and Z. Ali (14) were the other contributors. Chief destroyers for Southern Natal were M. Mansoor (3/28), G. Lawrence (2/8), M. Redinger (2/30) and Nadasen (1/6).
