Make your own jammy dodgers!

W
hile living in England I developed an affinity for these British biscuits, or ‘Jammy Dodgers’. The combination of vanilla shortbread and raspberry jam went perfectly with hot cups of tea and grey winter days. Even though I can’t pick up a package from the grocery store anymore, I still enjoy a taste of the UK from time to time with this easy homemade version. - Stephanie Eddy
HOW IT’S MADE:
INGREDIENTS: - 2 cups flour minus 2 tablespoons - 2 tablespoons corn starch - ¼ teaspoon salt - 1 cup unsalted butter at room temperature - ½ cup icing sugar - 2 teaspoons vanilla - Raspberry Jam - Icing sugar
1. Whisk together the flour, cornstarch, and salt. Set aside. 2. In a separate bowl, cream the butter and icing sugar until light and fluffy. Scrape down the sides of the bowl and add the vanilla. Mix again on medium-high until completely smooth. 3. Stir in the flour mixture either by hand or with the mixer on the lowest speed. Keep stirring until the flour gets worked into the butter and forms a dough. Make sure to occasionally scape the bottom of the bowl to incorporate the flour hiding there. 4. Use your hands to squeeze the dough into two balls and cover with plastic wrap. Place them in the freezer to chill for 15-20 minutes or until they’re firm enough to roll out. 5. Preheat the oven to 350 degrees. 6. Lightly flour your counter and rolling pin to prevent the dough from sticking. Then roll out the dough to a ¼ inch thickness. Cut out cookies with a two inch cookie cutter and transfer them to a greased cookie sheet. Use a small cookie cutter or the tip of a small knife to cut out a shape from the center of half of the cookies. Place the cookies on the tray in the freezer for 5-10 minutes, this helps the butter firm up and allows the cookies to hold their shape while baking. 7. Bake the cookies at 350 degrees for 7 – 11 minutes or until lightly golden along the bottom edge. 8. Allow the cookies to cool on a wire rack. Then spread the whole cookies with raspberry jam and top each one with a cut-out cookie. Sprinkle the cookies with icing sugar and serve.

W
hen asked to write a feature about a Canadian shop that our readers should check out, I was determined to find somewhere that was just right for readers like you! It had to be a shop offering something unique and inspiring for women of all ages. I have to say, when I stumbled across Magwood, I believe I hit the jackpot! The shop is a real gem; based out of Toronto, Ontario, it is a luxurious, vintage boutique that was established in April 2011 by Toronto’s very own and very talented Sarah Magwood. The shop acknowledges classic, feminine style. Magwood offers a mix of Victorian lace, Deco silks and mid century cocktail dresses – some of which are vintage designer pieces including the infamous Hermès, Chanel, Versace, YSL, and Dior – elegant daywear separates, and a beautiful array of accessories. How did this fantastic shop come to be? I personally find the story to be extremely inspiring. Sarah went to school at The University of Western Ontario (where I study now) and she studied Western’s unique program in Media, Information and Technoculture (which I am studying now) and Women’s Studies – hence why this shop and individual is so special to me! That said, I think anyone would

find her journey to be an inspiring one because of the success she’s already accomplished at such a young age, and in such a competitive and demanding industry! Upon her completion of school in 2008, Sarah had hopes of becoming a writer. She then started to work for various publications in Toronto, including Spacing and Worn Fashion Journal. Later in 2009, she began to arrange a weekly pop-up fashion and design series at The Drake Hotel called ‘Make Sale’. The series ran successfully for 6 months and during this time Sarah was also working for Trianon Interior Design as a design assistant. Through her experiences, Sarah met important people in the fashion industry and her calling was really starting to be revealed. She became interested in millinery design, the designing and manufacture of hats - not a particularly easy hobby. Sarah sold her headpieces and a collection of vintage pieces in a recurring program every six months. Her endeavours escalated into her selling and doing pop-ups at notable fashion boutiques, and thus, by April of 2011, Sarah opened up her very own boutique, Magwood! Sarah explains that she’s drawn to vintage because “it’s all about women’s history – every piece has a story – and it’s totally sustainable. It’s the perfect bridge between [her] love of mainstream fashion and [her] feminism.” I love this outlook because I believe it is important that we remain aware of the victorious history and accomplishments that women have achieved - Sarah’s successes being a prime example. Fashion is a way to express ourselves and the women of our past. Clothing and accessories are important additions to a woman and her image; leaving her feeling powerful, independent, and beautiful! A woman doesn’t have to follow the mainstream fashion trends or wear something she feels uncomfortable in, fashion is a personal choice that varies from woman to woman. Overall, clothing doesn’t need to be in excess, it is meant to express the personality of the subject whether it’s by wearing her favourite cocktail dress, necklace or headpiece. The pieces found in Sarah’s Magwood shop can offer all this! The shop sells elegant pieces suitable for both the office or for dinner out with friends, and definitely some showstopper items for those extra special events. TRADITIONS I

t’s the most wonderful time of the year…”, “Have a holly jolly Christmas…”, “Have yourself a merry little Christmas…” Did you all just sing those to yourself (or perhaps out loud)? This demonstrates how magical the Christmas season is; it really is one of the best times of the year. There are numerous things that signal the start of the Christmas season, like the twinkle of lights down the street or the first snowfall. Each person has their own signifiers that give them the first feelings of Christmas, like the announcement of the Starbuck’s Christmas menu, the first Christmas song on the radio, or simply the end of a semester. One of my signifiers is the first peppermint mocha, and another is the flow of “The Christmas Song” (or any other holiday classic). Whatever your signifiers are, they’re an important addition to the Christmas tradition and the expectant atmosphere of the season. Through the years I’ve grown dependent on little family traditions that I’ve come to love and cherish. There is still a part of me that turns into a little kid every year, excited for what the day has to bring. As I’ve grown up each year I’ve noticed that Christmas isn’t so much about the presents, but about the traditions and memories that our family shares. Here’s a little glimpse into my family’s Christmas traditions: As the clock strikes midnight on the night of Halloween, and November 1st hits, it’s officially the Christmas season in our house. My mom’s name (Natalie) ironically means ‘Child of Christmas’ and it could not be a more perfect fit for her. Growing up, and still now, she has always had a strong love for Christmas, and the effects have rubbed off on me. We get pretty excited for the start of the Christmas season and all it has to bring. The first Saturday of December marks our towns annual Santa Claus Parade. My family bundles up and heads downtown for the first peek at Santa. After the parade, we decorate our real (the only way to go) Christmas tree, which we pick out together before the parade. We sip hot chocolate, listen to Christmas classics, and make sure each kid gets to place their “Baby’s First Christmas” ornament on the tree. It’s a perfect start to get into the holiday spirit. And then there’s the baking. At our house we go a little chocolate crazy, from peppermint bark to rum balls, truffles, chocolate covered pretzels, cookie bark, and Toblerone fudge we’ve got the sweet tooth covered. The weekend before Christmas we get together with all the relatives on my dad’s side. To date, there are around 30 of us. It’s usually held at our house, and is a two day event. It’s basically just a giant slumber party! Christmas Eve we attend the candlelight service at our church; it’s one of my favourite traditions each year. After the service, we all get into our pj’s and open presents! The rest of the night is full of movies, good food, and hot cocoa. Christmas Day is spent at my grandparent’s house with everyone on my mom’s side. We either have a big turkey dinner or a morning brunch. We all sit down around a well decorated table and celebrate together for the day. Christmas is truly the best, but the weeks leading up to Christmas are even better, the anticipation of it all is just as exciting! Traditions are so important to keep; although, adding a new tradition each year (or every so often) might be a nice change, and another tradition may be created. This Christmas season I encourage you to try something new, to start a new wonderful tradition, and to keep in mind the Reason for the Season. - Alison Smink
