Metro Atlanta’s newest movie studio will be the first major project at the site of the former GM plant in Doraville, a development called the “Assembly.” We’ve worked with The Integral Group, which acquired the GM site last year, to develop “Third Rail Studios” on a six-acre section of the 165-acre development. The first phase of Third Rail Studios will be in an existing 130,000-square-foot building retrofitted into film and television production studios. It will include 60,000 square feet of sound stages and 20,000 square feet of production support mill shops, administrative offices and related vendor spaces. My tasks included making site analysis of the existing conditions and the design development phase of the project.

Studio House includes 60 units of approximately 303 square feet and includes additional public amenities for its residence. Studio House offers a rooftop terrace, a lounge, a gym, a co-working space and storage. The building’s public and circulation spaces promote interconnectivity and community. The ground floor is a café and co-work space that opens onto a public plaza. The units are designed with two distinct living/sleeping areas – with multiple furniture configuration options, allowing for customization and flexibility.

The future workplace caters to collaboration while providing individual control of the personal space. The individual space needs to be functional, productive, comfortable, healthy, customizable, and sustainable. Yet this individual space needs to structure an environment that will foster the generation and development of ideas born from many. Creativity is not bound to the confines of a desk in the same way that communication is not limited to the formality of the conference table. We are proposing a future that encourages workers to investigate their ideas free from the rigid boundaries of a traditional office. We developed five components that were essential to the future. These components include a Hub, a Cartridge, a Chair with built-in environmental controls, a Modular Kitchen providing storage and dining space, and Modular Partition blocks that improve the interior environmental qualities. The composition of these components is flexible. Flexibility is inherent. Provision of choice is essential. The design is universal.

FOUR PLEX HOUSING

This new residential expansion is located in Oakland, CA, adjacent to an existing four-unit housing complex. To utilize and maximize the site area of the existing four plex, seismic, fire/life safety, and acoustical improvements as well as provisions for improving existing utility services - water, electricity, sewer and gas, were made. This allowed us to propose four additional units onto the site, each including a living room, bedroom, kitchen, and bath.
1st Floor
The main platform for the design was to allow generous amounts of natural light and ventilation. On the 1st floor, more light is emitted from the back entrance of the house.
2nd Floor
The transparent ceiling of the central stair circulation space on the 2nd floor allow the passage of natural light. High windows are also positioned to capture light and provide openings for cross ventilation.

Estée Lauder was one of the interior design team’s clients. The team performed occupancy studies for all the office spaces owned by Estée Lauder in Manhattan. My tasks included visiting many of these floor spaces and taking occupancy survey making sure the floor plans corresponded to the existing spaces / desks arrangement. I had the opportunity to see the office layouts of major beauty line corporations including Estée Lauder, Bobby Brown, La Mer, and MAC.

AQUATIC CENTER. YEAR THREE.
Aqua Community Center will be sited in SE Atlanta, south of Grant Park, Zoo Atlanta and along the Beltline. Within this co text there is a mixture of residential, public park space, creek that flows from SE direction. The aqua community center will become an interest to many new homeowners and community developers. The design will serve the community by introducing two swimming pools (competition and recreational), theater, laboratory and retention pond. Within the design there are retaining walls that gradually die into the earth, giving visitors interesting experiences through the usage of light and water. The walls become a device for circulation dividers, structure, and shading.
OCONEE RIVER
ENVIRONMENTAL RESOURCE CENTER. YEAR THREE.
The Oconee River site mainly consists of trees on land and a body of water. The harsh soil is unfriendly for the pedestrians of the site. In order to make a smoother transition a concrete pavement is planted which slopes into the shoreline of the river and continues to extend upward into the earth in different rays. Within this arrangement four building blocks, each containing of different program, will sit. First block, an exhibition center, will partially sink; second block, conference/cafeteria will have an access to the outdoor activity along the shoreline; third block, a production resource center with green roof; fourth block, privately lifted studio/room for artists and scientists.
TOOLS PRODUCT COLLECTION COLLABORATION WITH GREGORY WALKER
The concept for the Tools collection of domestic products plays off our experiences with everyday items related to construction, creating a new, domestic context for appreciating their forms, actions, and materials. The series began with designs for a series of espresso cups, saucers, and spoons. The driving idea was to capture a literal registration of a screwdriver bit, at the moment when distinctive shapes each became apparent out of the cylindrical shaft. These would give the cup a distinctive silhouette, while the saucer registers the final bit profile in its base, similar to the typical head of a screw. The cup and saucer would fit together but the cup would also be able to stand-up on its own.
Beginning, we examined available screwdrive bit profiles and screws. As the designs evolved, we narrowed down our choices to those to a set that created distinctive, unique profiles. These included: Hexagon; Phillips; Torx; Square. A teaspoon paying homage to the standard flat head screwdriver rounded out the initial designs.

Our proposal for a series of spice containers, scent containers, and related accessories was driven by a desire to connect us to the delight of everyday patterns of living. We’ve long enjoyed strolling through the woods as summer fades into fall. Absorbing the variety of scents, colors, shapes, and watching the leaves gently falling provided inspiration to our design. Sitting together on a table, our little forest delightfully holds the most commonly used herbs and spices. Larger scent containers provide a beautiful object for any room, releasing its secrets gradually and in close proximity. Our design was initially inspired by a desire to recreate an assemblage of containers that shared common traits and were also individually distinctive. The sheer diversity of tree canopy shapes throughout different regions of the world provided sufficient inspiration. We sought out profiles that both resonated with our own experiences and provided a range suitable for use in the product.
One interacts with each container in a manner that also suggests the natural pattern of a tree: herbs and spices “fall” (by shaking them) from the glass canopy; a wooden base, containing concealed magnets at the base, anchors the piece to a tray. A cork stopper provides a seal to the container. Our design criteria included grouping the assemblage upon a wooden tray, containing concealed magnets that hold each piece snugly in place.
Early prototypes established the scale, feel, and production methods for the collection. We’ve tested the shapes on a variety of species and finishes. Finally, these prototypes confirmed the ability of the magnets to work as intended.
