GENDER INCLUSION: ADVANCING SOCIAL JUSTICE AND PROSPERITY Malika Saada Saar - Senior Counsel on Civil and Human Rights Lakshmi Puri - Assistant Secretary & General Deputy Executive Director UN Women

While there is an opening for digital violence through Social media, there is also an incredible opportunity to begin a digital Gender Equality Movement 155 countries have laws that economically discriminate against the equal treatment of girls and boys through policies promoting girl aversion Girls must be equally wished for without sex selection

Equality Dream: Workplace ● ●

Women are equally represented in the team and in leadership roles Equality must be reflected in Government and Policy for sustainable development

How do you clarify the values of inclusion in your organization and then enforce them through the hiring process? ● ● ● ●

Keep asking questions, get educated, and stay aware. We are wrestling public and open gender issues. We have a responsibility to unapologetically protest and support equality Core value - Women Empowerment and a built foundation of an equal environment

Valerie Jarret

FORMER SPECIAL ADVISOR TO PRESIDENT OBAMA CHAIR OF THE WHITE HOUSE COUNCIL ON WOMEN AND GIRLS RECIPIENT OF THE OVERTURE DIGITAL HUMANITARIAN AWARD

NEW CIVIC ENGAGEMENT “Government is only as good as we demand them to be.”

Valerie Jarret ● ● ● ● ● ● ● ● ●

1 in 5 women are sexually assaulted in college It is up to us to make our environment safe; are we ready to take this stand? Culture is incredibly important to continuously be sustaining and REINFORCING gender equality This will take hard work Revisiting the Women’s March her first thoughts were that it would never happen because of the permits that needed to be organized It is important to show force through elected officials What are we going to do? How many women want to run for office? Let’s run for something!

Valerie Jarret ●

We need to build momentum on a State and Federal Level, this is how we fight for our civil rights

How can tech companies advance this ideology? ● ● ● ●

She visited San Quentin recently (max security penitentiary) and learned about the last mile program offering classes like cooking and coding to the prisoners There has been a ridiculous increase of incarcerated individuals We need to use data science as a force for good Fact: Information allowed the ability to make informed decisions

Valerie Jarret Jail vs. Prison ● ● ● ● ●

Jail - Waiting trial Prison - After tried and committed 5% of the individuals in jail are convicted longer than the time they already served Is this an appropriate use of our resources? Women in prison has increased 400% in the last 4 years

This is disrupting the human fabric through social trauma, we need to break this cycle. What can companies do?

Valerie Jarret “Talent is ubiquitous” When you are venerable, you need someone that believes in you. Children aspire the future the adults they love make for them. ● ● ● ●

Double up on internships and are sure they are paid Be aware of BRO culture It is only in self interest that Tech start ups break the mold. The culture offers a better opportunity to speak up It is not sustainable or wise to make a decision without a diverse amount of minds to offer impression and screen efforts for any possible offensive material

Valerie Jarret Vet decisions through a Diverse Audience. ● ● ●

This is the best way to reflect the diverse crowd we are selling to, who is buying? Culture spills out into the marketplace Speak up! It is also our responsibility to not only create an environment where it is safe to speak up, we need to say something and keep that conversation going People do not hear when you yell; build your own credibility so that when you speak, people are listening

Valerie Jarret Government can only benefit from leveraging human capital. ● ● ● ●

There need to be more public and private partnerships Create a 2 way partnership Leverage dollars to philanthropic endeavors Be a role model.

Women in STEM + HD Important to track your offerings and how people are using them Role of Men fascinating findings 50% of men think women are well represented if they see 1 out of 10 leaders; they think this is adequate If there is no perceiving problem with the status quo, change cannot happen Why do we value Diversity?

Women in the Workplace 2017

Conclusions Impactful: Front line managers ● ● ● ●

Offer training and performance management These ideals must be continuously reinforced Address unconscious biased Help people understand how you need to exert extra deliberate effort towards consciously thinking about your decisions as a manager
