Fourteen recent MFA graduates present work that calls attention to forms and processes that encompass more than one subjective voice. They draw upon, channel, capture, and imagine poly-vocal worlds, both concrete and illusory.

Where creativity means purpose
IDENTITY Exhibition VI / In Another Voice
2014
To visualize the essential concept of diversity and relate it to the name of the show, I utilized four concentric circles to symbolize sound waves. Meanwhile, the title of the show was realigned and placed on different circles and each of the words had different directions to read, which represented how different aesthetic approaches can lead to the same destination.

Kalavinka Studio
In China, Kalavinka Studio is one of the earliest studios focused on spreading Buddhist culture to the public. They advocate that the concepts behind Buddhism can be the solutions to the frustrations of modern life. After thoroughly researching Buddhist history, culture and art, I built the graphic of two palms being put together devoutly, which is used as a greeting between believers. Meanwhile, it is also a behavior to remain at peace and to exclude other thoughts from the mind. The small curving shapes at the edge represent flame, which is also an important symbolic sign of Buddhism, which indicates the light in the heart that can disperse darkness. The line style was inspired by ancient Buddhist murals.

The Kite / 风 筝
This group of work is based on a story I wrote, which was inspired by a talk with Erik Brandt when he mentioned a teacher from Japan in his college-days. Thousands of overseas students are flown all around the world, like kites, year in and year out. The life in a disparate sky makes many of them tired to be tied down by the kite lines. But I know I can’t cut it, for without a fetter far away from my hometown, I won’t be a free bird, but a falling kite.

We Said Hello and Shook Hands
This is a project that I collaborated with collage artist Zach Collins, which was included into his 2014 book “ We Said Hello and Shook Hands”. Zach started two collages with cut-and-paste, then scanned and sent to me. I finished them digitally and sent back to him.

Liang Zhu 16” by 24”, Digital Print
Just as in Romeo and Juliet, this love story ends in tragedy. Lovers, Liang Shanbo and Zhu Yingtai, dedicate their lives to opposing the feudal notion on love and marriage. At the end of the story, their spirits turn into a pair of beautiful butterflies and are never to be separated again.
EXPERIMENT Typograpy / Liang Zhu
This is a piece I submitted to the MCAD MFA 2014 Fall Exhibition Chrysalis Stage, about the essential characteristic of a being’s behavior: Change. Based on a Chinese legend of a love story, Liang Zhu, which is known in the West as Butterfly Lovers.
