1 DRAPE MUSEUM UNDER A LANDSCAPE FABRIC l CORNELL Partner: Anderson Barrera l Instructor: Alexandr Mergold l Design IV l Spring 2015

The prompt is to design a museum for the AD White cast collection at Cornell. The site is a small green hill next to the Cornell Observatory. Preservation of both the site and sculptures are the central themes of the project. First, the excavation, then two retaining walls are inserted, and finally a complex triangular fabric-like structure drapes over the existing landscaping.

4

Under the “fabric is a large open space with three separate and unique paths for visitors to view the sculptures from radically different perspectives. The museum morphs into the existing two hills, and funnels visitors from the road upward to the observatory. It has an walkable roof which acts as a bridge between the two hills, and provides a panoramic view to the campus.

LIBRARY I PARK PUBLIC LIBARY AND URBAN PARK I QUEENS Instructor: Leslie Lok l Design VI l Spring 2016

The project is located at a vital site along the East River in Queens. The neighborhood is newly developed and needs public commodities. By integrating programs of a conventional public library into an urban park landscape allows users to engage with books, information, and other people in new, captivating ways. The original site is transformed in a series of wedges which slope in different directions, creating different spatial conditions depending on where one stands or sits.

12

The programs, such as auditorium, bookstore, and browsing and reading areas, are separated into five main structures which extrudes out of the uneven ground planes. These main spaces are connected to an underground tunnel which houses the secondary programs such as archives and restrooms. The facade of the project is a series of thin, vertical fins which extends into the interior spaces to function as structure and furniture such as bookshelves. The project blends the park space into the interiors, creating a relaxing and interactive environment for not only intense readers, but also people in the community.

3 ANALYSIS + SPECULATE MUSASHINO ART UNIVERSITY LIBRARY l JAPAN Partner: Anderson Barrera l Instructor: Leslie Lok l Design VI l Spring 2016

20

This is a partner project. The project is comprised of two parts: 1. the analysis the Musashino Art University Library 2. the speculation on the significance of “stacks” in this library. Two drawings are made to express the unconventional operation logic in this library, and how bookshelves can grow infinitely to function as structure, walkways, benches, etc. A scaled physical modeled is also produced to further emphasize the idea of that “stacks” can become a multi-functional architectural element.

SALT CANOPY HIGHWAY SUPPORT CENTER l NORWAY Partner: Andrew Wong l Instructor: Mark Cruvelier l Structural Systems l Fall 2014

The Model Project is a partner project in which the students select a building that has a unique structural quality and reconstruct a scale model showing the general structural systems and connection details of the project. The salt storage unit of a highway support center in Norway by 24H Architects is the structure of choice for me and my partner. The structure has three main systems: concrete walls, diagonal wood columns, and a diagonally-gridded roof canopy. Each system has a very different structural quality but every one of these systems is essential to make this structure stand.

26

The construction of the model required extremely detailed analysis on the project and careful calculations on scaling the project down to a 1:100 model. Every part of the building from the concrete walls to the diagonal column connections were produced from raw materials such as Rockite and aluminum sheets. The roof canopy is made from half inch-thick oak planks.

5 FOOD SOCIETY PRESERVE, REVITALIZE, AND REPROGRAM l SPAIN Instructor: Ruben Alcolea l Design VII l Fall 2016

32

The Getaria Visitor’s Center and Gastronomy Society is a project which creates new and interactive public spaces and circulations in a valuable site of the town, but at the same time preserves much of the existing conditions of the site. By removing just one of the existing medieval walls on site, the project enables a new passage from the inner area of the town out to the open. The floor plates increase in area by levels, creating a cave-like spatial condition between the building and the church. A triangulated glass facade is then applied on to the side of the project facing the church which reflects many of the surrounding context such as the church, the passage way and the views to the open.

6 TRASTEVERE MARKET RETHINKING THE FOOD MARKET l ROME Instructor: George Hascup, Davide Marchetti l Design V l Fall 2015

40

The focus of the project is to design new spaces based on existing elements. This new marketplace is an extension of the site itself. These linear blocks evolved from a series of lines drawn from the edges of the existing buildings. An irregular geometric roof reflects the linear rectangular blocks, and provokes a subtle juxtaposition between the above and below. The marketplace contains two different but closely connected environments. The ground level is a continuously enclosed space which houses permanent programs. The second level is an open space which houses temporary outdoor programs. The two spaces are both supported by a forest of thin columns.

RE-EMPHASIZING HISTORY l SAN FRANCISCO Firm: Handel Architects LLP l Summer 2016

48

The task for the design team was to redesign the facade of a small 3 story high residential building which is a part of a larger residential development in San Francisco. The historical context of the site involves of a train track running through it. Multiple schemes for the facade was created and tested. I was responsible for creating numerous rendering and a physical scale model to help visualize the new facade.

8 950 GOUGH ST CHURCH + CONDOMINIUM l SAN FRANCISCO Firm: Handel Architects LLP l Summer 2016

52

This project is a combination of a high-end condominium and a community church. A 19th century church was burned down over twenty years ago, and the project was commissioned to be a high-end residential building with the revival and inclusion of the church. My team and I created many iteration for the residential facade and the church facade independently. Then we tested out all the different schemes and ideas we have produced to help achieve a semi-monumental look and style for the church, but very minimal and clean look for the residential part.
