1.0 THREE RELATIONSHIPS
During the first six weeks, we explored the architectural tectonics of earth through some basic design exercises: - Point/line/plane: the tectonic on the ground; - Mass: the tectonic under the ground; - Frame&infil: the tectonic above the ground. The study of tectonics is prepared to inspire, create and develop our final project.

1.1 POINT / LINE / PLANE
Point is the starting point of the design, the connection or concentration of points creates lines. The plane is formed in the same way. In traditional design, point, line and planes were arranged orderly and regularly to express the stability and gravity which is shown on the left page. But with the popularity of irregularity, planes begin to be primary aspect. The decoration or interaction of lines and points make the total design become very simple but elegant.

Design Process
The model of my design derived from the idea that points forms lines and lines formed planes. The three components are interactive and the placement is flexible on any surface. The continuation of the total knit design can be infinite and all of the expected human activities can be satisfied. Different formations of lines are explored by using different materials, sizes, colors and design methods. Points, lines and planes can be observed through from detail to total.

Design Concept “A Place to Lie Down, Sit Up, Stand and Walk
I changed my design thinking for final model. I thought through the total landscape to the detail. And the design idea was inversed to plane to point. There is a mainstream from left to right and the extended lines mean from the infinite to infinite. All the small and separated pieces are points and all of the components are gathered to complete the stream.

1.2 FRAME & INFILL
The frame is the regular structure of the total design and the infill is disordered inside performances. The rigid structure expresses permanent and static of the house by using grid. The performance of infill is transient and dynamic through the space design and light and shadow. Sou Fujimoto’s design of House NA emphasis this concept clearly. The design of variable spaces was created by similar rigid grid. The whole house has a great view to outside also address the application of transparency.

Design Concept “View of the Sky, View of the Horizon, View of the Ground
My design was inspired by Sou Fujimoto. I developed this rigid cube into more variable spaces. The total is a journey from down to up and the end top is an unreachable solid cube to symbolize endless trip. The drawing is derived from rough top view and the color is used to differentiated the spaces and levels.

1.3 MASS
The tectonic of mass is mainly focus on the density and the use of sunlight. The contrasts of light and dark, void and mass are used to emphasis the design idea of mass. Gap, holes and some other openings are applied to create amenity and guide the journey in the building.

Design Concept “Solid and Void; Daekness and Light; Touch and See”
My idea was from a perspective view of spiral staircase and organic caves. A delicate artificial staircase exists in an natural rough caves with sunlight from the entrances. The contrast of artificial and natural, light and dark, void and solid will create a harmony and simulates the visitors’ curiosity to explore inside. But two platforms are not connected and visitors will always keep their curiosity to the another entrance and light source.

Collage of Mass Collage on the left came from a unintended arrangement. Two types of Staircases o were connected together from infinite to infinite. Collage on the right expresses connection from 2D to 3D with the change of tones.

2.0 HERRING ISLAND. SOMETHING LIKE A PAVILION
Herring Island is a small artificial island located in Melbourne’s Yarra River. The island can only arrived by boat. There is variable vegetation which can be helpful to create secret atmosphere or find a hidden place.

2.1.1 CONCEPTACLE
- about Secrets
At first, I began to think all aspects related to secret: unknown, mysterious, exclude, etc. I felt that a secret should be known by less even though people want to explore secret as it attracts their curiosity. A secret explodes to the most. Then, I tried to find the relationship between secret and architecture. Those ancient and mysterious stories, some are religious. The scene of Ankor Wat in the movie In The Mood For Love which was displayed by our tutor came into my mind.

2.1.1 CONCEPTACLE
- about Secrets
I generated a tunnel like space with louvres. The space is big enough for one person only. It is the area for someone to preserve or bury his/her secret. Even though we keep a secret in deep heart along, we still get along with the world with others. The space is not totally isolated as gaps among the louvres are connections between inside and outside, self and world.

2.1.2 SITE ANALYSIS
Herring Island is accessible only by boat and there are two ports on the island. Sculptures and gallery exist on the island, so visitors can explore them during their trips. Most of the paths or pavement are narrow and without constructing. Most of the noise comes of the roads surround it. Middle area of the island is the nosiest point as most of visitors will pass by and accumulated there. Vegetation on the island are without human plant or treatment. Some of them block the walkway or grow on the ground casually. From the contour There are some flat area and low height hills. Slops can be observed frequently. The location of site is next to way which people walk back from gallery to port. It is quiet and most of visitors do not notice as the slop will obstacle the view. The place was chosen as a secret place for a personal secret.

2.2 CONCEPT AND SKETCH DESIGN
The design is the expression of start, development and end of a secret. It is a single trip but not along. The influence from outside world and the secret from inside are contrasted and even conflict which can be observed from the conceptacle model. The desitination is waited to be exprlored.

2.3 DESIGN DEVELOPMENT
I improved my earlier design and tried to create multiple spaces for variable visitor and function. Also, I added toilet and store which will attract the attention first. It will help people to find this secret place as most of the construction is on the riverside, the other side of the slop.

A Place for Keeping Secrets 2.4 FINAL DESIGN DRAWINGS
Through the previous exercises, point/line/plane, frame&infil and mass, I tried to apply the tectonics I have learned into my design to express the main idea. I designed narrow entrance for single and open area multiple. A secret place is designed under the second floor and above the first floor. It is for the person who finished the total exploration.

3.0 REFLECTION During the first six-week exploration of tectonics, I learned how think like an architect professionally, how to combine of earth and architecture systematically, how to start the design from small parts. After the study and exercises, I comprehend the relationship between the architecture and under, on and above the ground. All these helped me to establish my final project. The Blog research and analysis also help make the concepts clear and specific. The development of final project is about how to generate a main idea to satisfy the basic functional requirements, how to systematically plan total process, and how to explore complex methods. The biggest challenge for me is how to apply the concepts into my own design creatively and aesthetically. I tried to solve this problem by discover more related reference which were mentioned by lecturer and tutor. Meanwhile, I observed the pros and cons of others’ design in every studio and ask others’ advice or views about mine. I benefit most from the reference and exploration of variable methods especially I was in stuck. From the latter, I realized that trying whatever method to solve problem firstly rather than being afraid of how difficult it is. In addition, the model making process taught me design through physically and visually simultaneously. I have to improve my model making skill. In conclusion, I really appreciated all the efforts and contribution of all subject lecturers and tutors as I benefited a lot and enjoyed this studio which helps me to build a strong base for my future exploration.
