DUALITY THROUGH POCHE MIT Exchange, Year 3 Semester 1 Superviser: Meejin Yoon
Istanbul Millennial Library This will kill that. The book will kill the building. That is to say, printing will kill architecture. ---- Victor Hugo Hugo’s obituary for architecture recognizes the symmetry of information and architecture as sites of power. In contemporary Istanbul, both the book and architecture remain, augmented and extended through the proliferation of media. Istanbul is home to the richest and largest collection of Islamic manuscripts in the world. The Millennial Library for Istanbul, as a major collection of manuscripts, also involves process of digitalization and reproduction. The library is part archive, part library, part mediatheque, part civic living room.

OPEN UP TO THE CITY Urban Strategy People are drawn in from the urban streets into the library through narrow alleys and staircases, and then suddenly open up to a commodious bright space, exposed to the amazing river and city view.
FLIPPING THE WALL
HKU, Year 3 Semester 2 Superviser: Olivier Ottevaere
Chongqing Social Housing Maximize the view of all residents is the major concept which drives the whole housing project. The porous wall slowly turns itself towards the view, with the back side left to services and public program. The wall is articulated as double-sided, creating the contrast between clear glass walls and busy corridors and balconies, addressing the duality of open and enclosed, private and public, served and servant space.
EMBRACE THE VIEW Site Visit and Concept Main concept is to make a porous wall which slowly turns itself towards the Yangtze River and mountain, maximizing the view. Yangtze River View

Mountain View
DOUBLE-SIDED WALL Program Configuration The wall is articulated as double-sided, one side open and transparent with view, the other side busy and lively with public activities. Contrast is created between clear glass walls and busy corridors and balconies, addressing the duality of the following: Open vs. Enclosed Private vs. Public Served vs. Servant space ...
LOVELY NEIGHBOURHOOD Public space + Social Activities Public activities happen at Lower Square,Inner Courtyard,Upper backyard and public stairs.
CITY OF MEMORIES
HKU, Year 2 Semester 1 Superviser: Tao Zhu
Kwun Tong City Center Renewal City is a piece of palimpsest with layers of memories. From Euphemia to Kwun Tong, from excavation to design, peel off and pile up, to create a superimposed city center with all memories of the site.
EXCAVATION OF MEMORIES Case Study - Carnnaregio The Venice project is also to design a new city centre. Peter Eisenman did a comprehensive site analysis before design. Complicated super-imposed drawings were made through excavating layers of the urban memories, including grids, lines and topography. Analysis drawing is made which peels off all the layers of geometry in Eisenman’s final drawing.

RECALL MEMORIES OF KT Massing Strategy Topography lines of the whole KT area is taken, scaled down and overlapped on the site to form a artifitial landscape.

ROLE OF CITY CENTER Program Distribution The huge valley created by the scaled-down topography extends into the real valley on site and co-respond to the whole landscape of the site. Programming strategy is based on the artificial topography. Highest buildings are commercial towers, medium ones are residential and public buildings, and short ones are retail shops. Section and Axonometric drawings showing two detailed designed parts, Courtyard Residentials and Underground Bus Terminal.
URBAN VOIDS AS CONNECTION
HKU, Year 2 Semester 2 Superviser: Joshua Bolchover
Seoul Multi-Program Complex The project is a complex which contains different programs including library, market, bookstore, cafe etc. A major void is introduced into the massing to separate the two main programs, market and library, and then the next level of voids punch through the massing and connect the two programs back.
VOID TYPOLOGIES ON SITE Site Analysis and Typological studies From the birdview of the city, the urban fabric is composed with both traditional and modern elements. I am interested in the Hanok House, which is the traditional courtyard house in Seoul. Typological research and studies is done with Hanok houses and different scales of urban voids.

BRIDGING THE GAP
HKU, Year 1 Semester 2 Superviser: John Lin
Conceptual House Design 2 separate tube massing interlocked with each other, creating a gap inbetween. Opennings are punched and connected over the gaps. To play with physical separation and visual connection, creating interesting spatial experience.
SEPARATION WITHIN CONNECTION RESEARCH, 2012 Hong Kong Urbanism
Municipal Building As Control Hub Research on multi-program buildings in Hong Kong on both urban scale and architectural scale. Municiple building is a distinctive urbanistic phenomenon in Hong Kong, the city which is characterized by its density and verticality. The building is a vertical collection of all different programs in Wanchai area; on the other hand, power of various offices in the building goes out to control the whole site. The building acts as an urban control hub. We conducted a series of interviews and tried to find out how the public are really using the building. Different conditions of physical separation and visual connection are revealed through specific cases.

She lives 2 blocks away. Actually she always buy food and vegetables in the supermarkets but she would come here to buy meat if she has time because the meat here is more fresh.
He has been selling burning insenses and candles in the grocery market on the 1st floor for 50 years. He comes a long way from Chai Wan to Wanchai doing business every day since he was 29.
She came here early every morning. Usually she will have breakfast in the cooked food centre or small resraurants around, and start doing business after that.
They live in Causeway Bay. They came here to study rather than in the public library in Causeway bay because the study room here opens for a much longer time.
He lives nearby and he often cames to the cooked food centre having brakfast, and spend the whole moring reading newspaper here.
He said that the Food and Environment Hygiene Department took care of many things like hawkers, hygiene condition in markets, along street, in slaughterhouses and even graveyard, so he is very busy everyday.
GROWTH
RESEARCH, 2011 Modern Theory
Analysis of Muller House Famous for Raumplan, Adolf Loos created organic spaces in Muller House. Instead of flat floor slabs together with regular columns and walls, there appear many interesting irregular conners, from which the whole project seems to grow out of. The research process is inspired by this collage, where the marble wall grows out of the corner. A series of axon drawings is created on one drawing paper, showing the growth from this corner to walls, floors, stairs, spaces and ultimately a complete house. All levels and spaces are revealed in the process and also the relationship between adjacent rooms is shown clearly in all dimensions. The whole building is broken down into seed corners with organic spaces they framed.
