“MIDDLE “MIDDEL SCHOOL Middle School in Ann Arbor

DURATION: August -December 2016 INSTRUCTOR: Cyrus Penarroyo LOCATION: Ann Arbor , Mi.

“Middle” implies both in-between and at the center. Instead of biasing the outward appearance of things, the project looks inward and embraces the transitional, clumsy, and unresolved qualities of middles, both inside objects and between them. Since middle inherently mediates between two or more situations, this project focuses on how these spaces can engender new forms of social encounter. “Middle” middle school is a fine art based middle school. According to this precondition, the art room is the most hierarchical room and in terms of middle strategy, each circle- shaped room has its own middle. The glass dome emphasizes the circular shape and middle. At the same time, domes allow light to flow into the art rooms and meet the particular demands for illumination. For example, to facilitate the needs of a sketch class, the orientation of natural light from the windows are installed on the surrounding wall, while circles are stretched out to organized other spaces. The regular classrooms, restrooms, and facilities rooms are spaces designated with bars. These bars rotate 45 or 90 degrees, but all bonded by circular forms. The rotation of these bars create several kinds of exterior space: the space underneath the overhang, double height space or triple-high courtyard space and terrace. These spaces become important centers of communication. In order to offer new forms of social encounter and promote the communication between different students from various grades, three big open spaces are introduced: flat open space, expansive stairs, and a large terrace. These open space are bonded by the service cores, which are also circular in shape with cylindrical pop-out roofs. The big space inhabits a loop that spirals up to the top level and back to the ground level extending through the entire building. ACADEMIC WORK

02 OHIO STATE UNIVERSITY AIRPORT DURATION: Janurary-April 2016 INSTRUCTOR: Robert S.Livesey LOCATION: 2160 W Case Rd, Columbus, OH

The OSU Airport is now a self-supporting entity of The Ohio State University through the Department of Aerospace Engineering & Aviation. The Department oversees all aspects of the airport from airport management, to fixed-base operations, to airport maintenance. The new OSU Airport is built and expanded based upon the aforementioned airport related programs. Corporate hangars, T-hangars, clear-span hangars, terminals, hotel, and the Ohio State flight education school are developed to provide better service for the public and Ohio State University. The basic strategy of the master plan is to introduce equal dimensional lawn strips to the in-between spaces of different programs to create the “green strip-program-green strip pattern. In order to follow this pattern, green sloped roofs and trees- covering parking in front of the terminal are introduced to keep the continuity of the green strip. The pattern strategy is also employed on the architectural scale: a green slot is employed in the form of a courtyard, which in turn separates the different interior programs. ACADEMIC WORK

03 WRAP VS UNWRAP London Public Library

DURATION: August -December 2015 INSTRUCTOR: Pendleton-Jullian Ann LOCATION: London, United Kingdom

The City of London Public Library project is a testament to the seamless co-existence of old and new. Situated near the River Thames in the city’s bustling financial district, the proposed building adds to the profile of the area by blending with and even replicating features of storied landmarks. For instance, it offers the same “wrap” effect of City Hall, the area’s most arresting building because of its bulbous shape. A glimpse at the City Hall and the library reaffirms the idea that inspired architecture can actually help buildings communicate visually with each other, despite their differences. A closer look at the library reveals a unique design well suited to the individual needs of its users and reflective of the site. The space inside unwraps around a central garden that faces both the city and river. Because the design’s pathways or wrappers allow for easy public access, they also make the building more attractive to a broader population in terms of age, educational background and economic status. In other words, I hope this structure will invite people of all stripes from pre-schoolers to researchers and everyone in between to come in, utilize and enjoy.

The bulbous shape separates City Hall from so many other cube-like buildings surrounding it, especially along Tooley Street.

The main entrance on the Thames’ side.

The City’s side main entrance offers typical street surface access while the Thames’ side entrance incorporates beautiful landscaping that extends through the lifted first-floor of the building.

Through the city side entrance, visitors can gain quick entry to a second floor gallery and restaurant.

Through the circulating pathways spiraling upwards, visitors can reach floors of book stacks, features and other services.

On the Thames’ side of the building, circulation wraps around the central garden, offering access to the computer lab, video rooms and working areas on various floors.
