Accreditations Xavier’s dedication to upholding the highest academic standards has not gone unnoticed by many different international accrediting bodies. These recognitions allow our graduates to secure residencies and become licensed doctors throughout the United States and Canada. Accreditation Commission on Colleges of Medicine (ACCM)
Xavier has obtained full accreditation until May 31st, 2025.
In 2015 Xavier received accreditation from the Accreditation Commission of Colleges of Medicine (ACCM). This is an independent, not for profit, accrediting organization based in the Republic of Ireland. The United States Department of Education has stated that the standards used by ACCM are comparable to those used to accredit medical schools in the United States. Like the CAAM-HP, ACCM uses the guidelines set forth by the Liaison Committee on Medical Education (LCME). ACCM has gained World Federation for Medical Education (WFME) Recognition Status until December 31st, 2026. This means it meets the Educational Commission on Foreign Medical Graduates (ECFMG)’s requirements for an internationally recognized medical accrediting agency. Caribbean Accreditation Authority for Education in Medicine and other Health Professions (CAAM-HP)
In 2018, Xavier earned Full Accreditation by the Caribbean Accreditation Authority for Education in Medicine and other Health Professions, or CAAM-HP. CAAM-HP is the legally constituted body empowered to determine and prescribe standards and to accredit medical programs in the Caribbean. CAAM-HP uses standards based on the Liaison Committee of Medical Education (LCME) which accredits US medical schools. CAAM-HP is recognized by the National Committee on Foreign Medical Education and Accreditation (NCFMEA) as having standards comparable to those used to accredit US Medical Schools. NCFMEA is a division of the US Department of Education which evaluates the standards of accreditation applied to foreign medical schools. This Full Accreditation by CAAM-HP makes Xavier School of Medicine fully compliant with the Education Committee for Foreign Medical Graduates (ECFMG) 2023 deadline, that dictates all international medical graduates need to be graduates of a school that has been appropriately accredited. Also, Xavier graduates will now be eligible for California Residencies as of January 1, 2020. Xavier has obtained Full accreditation for 2018-2021. Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates ECFMG is a world leader in promoting quality health care—serving physicians, members of the medical education and regulatory communities, health care consumers, and those researching issues in medical education and health workforce planning. Xavier is compliant with the ECFMG 2023 rule that all international medical graduates must graduate from an accredited medical school in order to obtain residencies.

Medical Council of Canada (MCC)
The Medical Council of Canada (MCC) strives to achieve the highest level of medical care for Canadians through excellence in evaluation of physicians. It assesses over 11,000 medical students and graduates every year through its examinations. Its exams are offered in both official languages in sites across Canada, and in the case of the MCCEE, in over 500 locations in 80 countries. The MCC is also a leader in verifying and storing physician credentials, which the candidate can share with medical organizations across Canada. Xavier’s listing in the World Directory of Medical Schools is internationally recognized by the Medical Council of Canada (MCC) for certification and eligibility for medical licensure. MCC Official Website Medical Council of India
The Medical Council of India (MCI) was established in 1934 to create uniform standards of higher qualifications in medicine and recognized medical qualifications both in India and abroad. Based upon the information received by the Indian Embassy/High Commission of India, Xavier has been approved of by the MCI. Jordan Ministry of Health
Xavier is recognized by the Jordan Ministry of Health. This means our graduates can practice in Jordan. World Directory of Medical Schools The World Directory of Medical Schools was established in 2013 through a joint effort by the International Medical Education Directory and the Avicenna Directory. It is a comprehensive list of all medical schools in the world. This allows students, faculty, medical regulatory agencies, and others, to easily determine the quality of a program. While not an accrediting body, attending a school listed in the World Directory of Medical Schools is a requirement for eligibility for the USMLE. Charter The government of Aruba granted Xavier University School of Medicine a charter in 2004. This allowed Xavier to create a medical school and grant qualified students Doctor of Medicine degrees upon completion of the program. The charter also permits the importation of human cadavers for use in anatomy studies and dissections.

Introduction to Life in Aruba Located 15 miles north of Venezuela in the warm waters of the southern Caribbean, Aruba is home to beautiful white-sand beaches, 82-degree days, and some of the kindest people in the world. Our island is 19.6 miles long and 6 miles across, with a total area of 70 square miles. We’re located just below the hurricane belt. Xavier is located in the capital city of Aruba, Oranjestad, and the Queen Beatrix International Airport (AUA) is only a 15 minute drive away. Climate Aruba has some of the best weather conditions in the world. The average temperature is 82° F / 28° C, and the cool breeze provides a nice relief. The climate is dry, so it rarely rains there. Weather is not something those in Aruba need to worry about. What makes Aruba different? With its Dutch heritage and Latin flair, Aruba is a sight to be seen. Just off the coast of Venezuela, Aruba is famous for its poster-perfect sugary-white beaches, some of the Caribbean’s top wreck diving and, thanks to nearly constant trade winds, world-class windsurfing and kite-boarding. History of Aruba The island of Aruba came under Dutch rule in 1636 as part of the Netherlands Antilles. It then claimed autonomy in 1986 and is now a separate entity within the Kingdom of the Netherlands. This means that it follows Dutch law and has a governor appointed by the monarch of the Netherlands. Aruba’s government is a parliamentary representative democracy. Travel to Aruba Getting to Aruba is easy. You can take direct flights from major North American cities. Aruba has direct flights coming in and out of the country to major North American cities on a daily basis. U.S. Preclearance is used in Aruba, which means flight passengers are checked before they get on the plane, and can immediately leave the airport upon landing. Getting around in Aruba Aruba has a good network of paved roads allowing access to most places of interest. Arubans drive on the same side of the road as people in the U.S. and Canada. Several Aruba car rental companies are available at the airport to pick up your vehicle. You can also request pick up at your hotel. U.S. and Canadian driver’s licenses can be used in Aruba. The University has a shuttle bus that picks up and drops students at the school. Phone, Internet, & Cable Aruba has a well-developed infrastructure for phone, internet, and cable TV. We have two leading companies: Digicel, and Setar, and both offer excellent services. You can find all the information you need at www.digicelaruba.com, and www.setar.aw. Shipping to Aruba The four companies that you could use for shipping are FedEx, UPS, DHL, and Fast Delivery. Currency & Banking The U.S. dollar is accepted everywhere on the island, as well as all major credit and debit cards. ATM machines are readily available throughout the island. It is easy for students to open bank accounts in Aruba. All they need is identification and a letter from the school, which they can get from the Administrative Office on campus. The currency in Aruba is stable and has an exchange rate that is always equal to that of the U.S.

Electricity All electrical outlets in Aruba are the same as in the U.S. and Canada. It is a good idea to bring along a surge protector as added protection for any electronic equipment. Healthcare and Emergency You may be surprised and comforted to find out that the healthcare in Aruba is at a very high level. In Aruba, you can find over 100 MD’s and Specialists including Plastic Surgeons, General Surgeons, Gynecologists, Pediatricians, and Chiropractors. Aruba also has excellent Dentists (cosmetic), Psychiatrists, and Alternative Medicine Doctors. The International Red Cross, the Fire Department, and the Search & Rescue foundation, together with Aruba’s fleet of 13 ambulances, form the Emergency Medical Response unit. Besides the locations of these units near Oranjestad, Aruba also has a full service Emergency Center “Centro Medico San Nicolas” located in San Nicolas which provides for the handling of emergency situations on the east side of the island. Aruba also has a full service hospital (Dr. Horacio E. Oduber Hospital) counting 325 beds with over 14 specialist’s departments. Judicial Service The safeguarding of the fundamental rights and freedoms, legal certainty, and proper administration of the law, is under jurisdiction of the Kingdom of the Netherlands with the cooperation of the Aruban Minister of Justice. Judges of the Common Court in Aruba are appointed by the Queen. Appeals may be made to the Supreme Court, sitting in the Netherlands. Defense and External Affairs The Kingdom of the Netherlands is responsible for the defense (the Royal Marine Camp in Savaneta) and external political and diplomatic relations.

Research Year for MSc Program: Students will complete their 2 years of Basic Science curriculum in Aruba (20 credits will count towards the MSc Degree), optional 1 year of research and thesis at the Blumberg Institute in Pennsylvania (14 credits towards MSc degree), and 2 years of Clinical Medicine at our hospitals throughout the United States. Students who do not complete the 1 year of research at the Blumberg Institute will not be eligible for an MSc degree. The program will give students the avenue for significant research opportunities alongside Nobel Laureate scientists. The curriculum is intended to facilitate research opportunities while allowing our students to be even more competitive during the match process. Though accepted into the dual degree program, students will not be required to obtain an MSc degree. Those who wish to bypass the MSc degree will be permitted. Students may opt to complete their research year after their 2 years of Clinical Science. The MSc degree will be award after successful completion of Basic Science and 1 year of research as outlined in the curriculum.

Clinical Science The entry into the Clinical Science Program is the most exciting event in every medical student’s career. This is the moment for which they have prepared their entire lives and will, for most, be their very first contact with real patients in real clinical settings. Xavier has prepared a robust clinical program which will ready the student to enter any field of medicine. Almost all of our rotations are situated in the United States with the strongest concentration of hospitals being in our three centralized “hub” cities of New York, Baltimore, and Chicago. These locations are where most of our core rotations are offered but there is a vast array of locations where students may choose to spend their electives. At the discretion of the Dean of Clinical Science, students with strong academic performance may be given preferential rotation placement. The program is structured in such a manner as to allow a student to gain licensure in most of the United States. Each of a student’s core rotations is spent at a hospital which hosts an Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME)-approved residency program in the respective core specialty. Every site is held to comparable standards of teaching, evaluation, faculty development, and study resources. A student will gain all the knowledge and skills necessary to pass Step 2 of the United States Medical Licensing Examination (USMLE) and compete for any coveted United States residency position. Our students have rotated and gone on to train and practice in Canada as well. The clinical program is 72 weeks in duration with an optional 12 weeks of additional elective rotations. The first 48 weeks are spent in the core rotations and the breakdown is as follows: Students then have 24 weeks in elective rotations. During this time, a student is given the freedom to explore a vast array of available clinical electives. It is also encouraged that a student find or create their own elective experiences. This affords the student an opportunity to match their own interests and abilities to the right field of medicine for them. Once this decision has been made, the elective time also allows a student to showcase their abilities and network with physicians who may help them attain their career goals. The duration of time in each elective rotation may vary, but a minimum of 4 weeks will be spent in each.
