In his address to the graduates, he touched on a number of topics, including health care in America, and the opportunities that are now available to students with their MDs. It is not just that they are doctors, they can now conduct research, enter into academics, and become entrepreneurs. Xavier thanks Dr. Jacobson for attending. Chancellor Dr. J.G. Bhat

Members of the Board of Trustees also spoke to the students and gave their advice for the future. Chancellor Dr. J.G. Bhat talked about the changing medical field, and how students now need to study societal concerns in medicine, whereas in the past it was purely about diagnosis. Chairman Mr. Edwin Casey defined success and love, and stated the importance of sharing success with others. Finally, President Ravishankar Bhooplapur talked about the growing technology available to these new graduates, but how they must always remember to be empathetic towards their patients. Keynote Speaker Spotlight This year’s Keynote Speaker was Dr. Harry Jacobson, MD. Dr. Jacobson earned his MD from the University of Illinois and later went on to residency at Johns Hopkins University Hospital. His area of specialty was internal medicine. He also completed specialty training in nephrology at the University of Texas Health Science Center in Dallas. Throughout the course of his career, Dr. Jacobson has received many awards, including: •

2002- Ernst and Young Southeast Entrepreneur of the Year and was recently ranked No. 35 on Modern Physician’s 50 Most Powerful Physician Executives in Healthcare.

Graduate Spotlights Jenna Rabadi-Innabi 1. Tell us about one positive experience during your rotations. I’ve had many positive experiences throughout my rotations. But one that sticks out in my mind is during my pediatrics elective rotation. The doctor wasn’t in yet and she had a walk-in sick visit. The doctor called me and told me to start the work up and do all the necessary testing before she got in. During that experience, I felt like I was running my own practice and I began to trust myself more as a student and as a professional. What made it better was the feedback the mother and her daughter gave me and the doctor. They were so encouraging and reassured me that one day I would make a great doctor. Rochard Sauveur 1. How satisfied are you with your experience here at XUSOM?

2002- Elected to the National Academy of Sciences, Institute of Medicine.

2017- Elected to the Tennessee Healthcare Hall of Fame.

2018- Health Care Awards Lifetime Achievement for the Nashville Business Journal.

Dr. Jacobson has founded or co-founded several companies and currently is the Managing Partner and Co-Founder of TriStar Health Partners. Xavier was honored to have him at our special event this year.

I am extremely satisfied with my experience here at XUSOM. The staff have been very nice and helpful. Also, the online learning resources provided to students at XUSOM have been helpful in my academic growth and preparation for exams. The online resources are great!

Andrea Hernandez 1. What was your favorite rotation and why? My favorite rotation was Emergency Medicine which was part of my internal medicine rotation. I was thrown into a scenario where every person played a vital role and I wasn’t just pushed aside to be a “fly-on-the-wall” medical student. Every member of the ED was more than happy to show me every step from residents to the nurses to the social workers to the techs. It was here I was given the most hands-on experience. On my first day, my preceptor presented me to the staff and residents and I was immediately given responsibilities and was shown how to suture all types of lacerations, put in IVs and draw blood, intubate unresponsive patients, and was taught how to deal with difficult and combative patients. Hands down the best experience I ever had in medical school as it was when I first began to be treated and feel like a doctor and not “just a student”.

The Anatomage Table The XUSOM Anatomy Department is excited to announce the addition of a new, high tech, teaching and learning instrument, The Anatomage Table.

Anatomage offers 4 gross anatomy cases, more than 20 high resolution regional anatomy cases, and more than 1000 pathological examples, including animal cases. These high resolution and high quality cases are unique to Anatomage. Thousands of structures are meticulously segmented from photographic images to deliver the most accurate real 3D anatomy. During the second week of the Summer 2018 semester, students were sent to the Anatomy lab. All the students were excited about the new technology and have requested to have more laboratory seessions so that they can spend more time using the Anatomage Table. By: Dr. Segie Apacible and Dr. Gil Apacible

The Anatomage Table is the only fully-segmented, realhuman 3D anatomy system. Users can visualize anatomy exactly as they would see it on a fresh cadaver. Individual structures are reconstructed in accurate 3D, resulting in an unprecedented level of accurate anatomy, dissectible in 3D. Anatomy is presented as a fully interactive, life-sized touch screen experience, in operatory bed form. The Table allows for exploration and learning of human anatomy beyond what any cadaver could offer. The Table allows students to interact with young and wellpreserved digital cadavers instead of aged and degenerated bodies. The accurate details and rich content draws students’ interest and attention, leading to more effective educational outcomes.
