Your achievements bring great pride to Xavier University School of Medicine, and we have every confidence that you will be successful healthcare providers and continue to represent Xavier University School of Medicine well!

I extend a warm personal welcome to the newest students of Xavier University Aruba. We are delighted to have you join us for the January 2024 semester as you commence or continue your journey in medical school, veterinary school, and nursing school.

A hearty welcome also goes out to our returning students. It’s wonderful to have you back, and I trust you had a safe and enjoyable holiday.

As we reflect on this achievement, I am delighted to announce our upcoming annual Alumni Global Meet event scheduled for May 16-17. Over 50 esteemed alumni and clinical staff members from Xavier University School of Medicine will convene in Aruba to offer invaluable guidance and support to our current students. We are immensely grateful for the dedication of our alumni, who generously share their wisdom and experiences with the next generation of Xavier doctors.

I would like to welcome our new faculty and staff who have joined us this semester. I have full confidence in their commitment to delivering top-notch education.

Our incoming students had an enriching orientation week, where they heard from experienced faculty and administrators over two days, culminating in the celebratory White Coat ceremony. We are confident that they are well-prepared for a successful career in healthcare.

Furthermore, I am thrilled that we will be hosting this year’s commencement ceremony on May 18, to be held at our picturesque residential campus in Aruba. This joyous occasion will serve as a fitting tribute to the remarkable accomplishments of the Xavier University School of Medicine and School of Nursing Class of 2024. Together, let us celebrate their achievements and wish them continued success as they embark on their careers in healthcare.

It’s noteworthy that year after year, our students continue to excel academically. This success is a direct outcome of the dedicated efforts of our faculty and administration, led by Chief Academic Officer Dr. Dubey, VP of Academic Affairs / Dean of Clinical Science Dr. Pestell, Dean of Basic Sciences Dr. Gopi, Dean of Pre-Health Dr. Pawlak, Dean of Student Affairs Dr. Mohan, Dean of Veterinary Medicine Dr. Ravindra, Dean of Nursing Prof. McGowan, Associate Dean of Clinical Science Dr. Abazid, Assistant Dean of Student Affairs Dr. Kotakala, and all our Department Chairs.

Service Above Self: Sukhmanjit Kaur’s Journey to Becoming a Doctor

SUkhMANjIT kaur’s journey towards becoming a doctor has been fueled by a lifelong passion for the sciences, particularly biology, and it was her childhood dream to become a doctor and serve the greater good. her educational pursuits reflect this determination, as she embarked on her academic journey at Baba Farid University, a prestigious institution for medical sciences in India, where she excelled in her Bachelor of Science in nursing. This foundational experience not only nurtured her academic prowess but also instilled in her a strong sense of compassion and dedication to serving humanity.

Upon relocating to Canada, Sukhmanjit continued her pursuit of knowledge and service, enrolling in Mohawk College’s autism and behavioral sciences program, followed by completing coursework in the addiction mental health and counseling program at Mount Royal University in Calgary, Alberta. Concurrently, she dedicated her time and efforts to working with autistic children at McMaster Children’s hospital, showcasing her commitment to making a positive impact in her community.

Sukhmanjit’s altruistic spirit extends beyond her professional endeavors, as evidenced by her active involvement in various community initiatives. From volunteering at food banks in Alberta to assisting the homeless during harsh winters, she has consistently demonstrated her unwavering dedication to helping those in need. her exemplary contributions have garnered recognition, including awards from both the provincial government of Alberta and the prestigious Queen Elizabeth II Platinum jubilee Award. Choosing Xavier University School of Medicine was a carefully considered decision for Sukhmanjit. She said, “In selecting Xavier University School of Medicine, I conducted thorough research into its great reputation and track record of producing accomplished graduates. I carefully assessed various factors including rankings, accreditation, and the expertise of its faculty. Additionally, I explored the diverse research opportunities, clinical rotations, and elective courses available at Xavier. Situated in a picturesque location, the

campus offers a welcoming and comfortable environment conducive to learning.”

During the admission process with Xavier, Sukhmanjit learned about Guru Nanak Dev ji’s scholarship, and applied once she received her acceptance letter. She later learned that she was one of the few students to receive this very prestigious scholarship. “Receiving this scholarship was a great milestone for me,” added Sukhmanjit. “It not only helped financially, but was also a recognition of the good work I have done so far. Such an endorsement was not only a great personal encouragement but also a great distinction.”

Despite facing personal challenges, Sukhmanjit’s resilience and determination remain unwavering. She has overcome adversities with remarkable fortitude, maintaining her academic excellence and pushing herself to achieve new heights.

Sukhmanjit recognizes that becoming a doctor entails not only academic excellence but also a deep commitment to patient care and social responsibility. She emphasizes the importance of practical exposure and effective communication skills in preparing for a medical career.

In September 2023, she passed USMLE Step 1, and then began her third-year clinical rotations. Throughout her journey, Sukhmanjit has been guided and inspired by mentors, including her parents as well as Xavier’s own Dr. Dubey and Dr. Neelam, whose support and guidance have been invaluable in shaping her path to becoming a doctor.

Sukhmanjit is excited for what the future holds at Xavier University School of Medicine. “With the construction of a new building underway, slated to be completed soon, students can anticipate enhanced facilities such as accommodation, a gym, cafeteria, career counseling, mentorship programs, and classrooms—all conveniently located under one roof. This development promises to streamline student life and minimize commuting time, ensuring greater accessibility to essential resources and amenities.”

Amanpreet Mahal’s Journey of Passion and Persistence at Xavier University School of Medicine

In the ever-evolving landscape of medicine, the journey from medical school to residency is a testament to the dedication, resilience, and passion of aspiring physicians. Amanpreet Mahal, a 2023 graduate of Xavier University School of Medicine, embodies these qualities as he embarks on the next chapter of his career, having matched this year in Family Medicine at Michigan State University. His story is one of determination, shaped by his experiences both within and beyond the classrooms of Xavier.

“Choosing to attend medical school in Aruba wasn’t just about academics; it was also about embracing a stunning environment that promised inspiration and serenity,” Amanpreet reflects. For him, studying amidst Aruba’s palm-fringed beaches and warm sunlight offered not only a backdrop for learning but also a source of inspiration. “Beyond the classroom, exploring Aruba’s rich culture and diverse ecosystems would provide a well-rounded learning experience, ensuring I could become a capable and compassionate physician while enjoying the benefits of island life.”

Throughout his time at Xavier, Amanpreet found himself immersed in a curriculum designed to prepare students for successful careers in medicine. “At Xavier, the basic science program prioritizes preparing students for the USMLE Step 1,” he notes. Engaging lectures, interactive learning, and hands-on training from the first semester fostered a thorough understanding of key subjects, while intensive review sessions and practice exams honed critical thinking and test-taking skills essential for success in future medical practice. “The curriculum included intensive review sessions and practice exams, fostering critical thinking and test-taking skills essential for success,” Amanpreet emphasizes.

Amanpreet was deeply engaged in campus activities, particularly within Xavier’s chapter of the American Medical Student Association. Serving as the organization’s event coordinator, he orchestrated activities and initiatives aimed at “cultivating student unity and generating funds for meaningful causes, reflecting Xavier’s dedication to community involvement and charitable endeavors.”

As Amanpreet transitioned to clinical rotations, he found himself exploring cities across the United States. “The flexibility of my medical rotations enabled me to explore cities like naperville, Philadelphia, Chicago, and my hometown of Detroit,” Amanpreet explains. Each location offered unique cultural experiences and medical insights, broadening Amanpreet’s perspective and preparing him for the challenges of residency. “From observing surgeries in renowned hospitals to engaging with diverse patient populations, these rotations not only

fostered professional growth but also deepened my appreciation for the diversity of American life,” he adds.

Reflecting on his journey, Amanpreet emphasizes the pivotal role of Xavier University School of Medicine in his success. “At Xavier University, I am fortunate to have a supportive staff who stands by me, offering unwavering guidance and resources, no matter how many times I stumble,” he reflects. “The unwavering support and guidance from Xavier’s faculty and staff were instrumental in achieving this milestone,” he added, reflecting the institution’s dedication to nurturing resilient and compassionate physicians.

As Amanpreet celebrates his successful match into residency this year, he offers a poignant message to future students considering Xavier University School of Medicine. “Embrace the beauty around you for inspiration, but maintain your determination to succeed,” he advises. “With purpose and focus, you can achieve your aspirations and make the most of your time at Xavier University School of Medicine.”

Dr. Loren Alonso’s Journey from Transfer Student to Residency Match

In medical school, each student’s journey is unique, often characterized by perseverance, dedication, and unwavering commitment. Dr. Loren Alonso, a recent graduate from Xavier University School of Medicine, exemplifies these qualities as she embarks on the next chapter of her medical career. With her recent match into the Family Medicine residency program at RUSH University Medical Center in Chicago, Illinois, Loren’s achievement stands as a testament to her hard work and the support she received from Xavier’s esteemed medical program.

Loren’s path to medicine was unconventional, marked by determination and a steadfast pursuit of her dream to become a medical doctor. Initially beginning her medical education elsewhere, she found her way to Xavier, recognizing it as the perfect fit for her to fully realize her aspirations. “My journey to medicine before enrolling in Xavier was very different and non-traditional. I transferred from another program and was happy to find that Xavier was the right fit for me.”

Choosing Xavier University School of Medicine was a pivotal decision for Loren, driven by her desire to receive a comprehensive medical education that would equip her with the skills needed to make a difference in patients’ lives. “I chose Xavier University School of Medicine in the hopes that I would be able to receive a

medical education that would help me achieve my dream of becoming a medical doctor,” she noted.

During her time at Xavier, Loren experienced the dynamic and hands-on approach to medical training that the program offers. Engaging in clinical rotations across various settings in Chicago, as well as elective rotations in Florida, Loren gained invaluable experience in diverse patient care environments.

She reflected, “Xavier University School of Medicine provided a means to successfully complete my medical education and finally acquire my MD. They had great resources to help me match.”

Xavier University Aruba Supports Local Youth Soccer Community

On Wednesday, April 3, Xavier University Aruba President Ravi Bhooplapur and Chief Academic Officer Dr. Arun Dubey presented San Luis Deportivo youth soccer club representatives, players, and their families with new game jerseys sponsored by the university. This initiative underscores Xavier’s commitment to promoting youth activity and fostering a sense of community within Aruba.

The new game jerseys were presented by President Bhooplaur and Vice President Dan Moses to San Luis Deportivo President Jessmira (Jessy) van der Linde, Secretary Zethsia Lacle, Treasurer Aryati Millerson, Commissioner Julian Patino, and Commissioner Roque (Ito) Maduro.

The jersey presentation was followed by inter-club games, and Xavier provided the players and their families with dinner. In addition, a special recognition was made for Sharin van der Linde for her contribution to the club.

Xavier University Aruba is also thrilled to announce they will be hosting the Xavier King’s Day Cup, a vibrant youth soccer tournament set to take place on April 27th, 2024. The event will be held at Xavier’s residential campus in Hato, Aruba.

“We are delighted to support the local youth community by sponsoring San Luis Deportivo and serving as host and lead sponsor of the Xavier Kings Day Cup,” said Xavier University Aruba President Ravi Bhooplapur “At Xavier University Aruba, we recognize the importance of nurturing talent and fostering a sense of unity within our community. We hope to provide a great experience for the players and their families as well as to empower the young people of Aruba and contribute to their growth.”

San Luis Deportivo President Jessmira (Jessy) van der Linde expressed her gratitude and excitement, stating, “Thank you to Xavier University Aruba and President Ravi Bhooplapur for supporting San Luis Deportivo by donating new game jerseys for our players. In addition, the Xavier King’s Day Cup is a wonderful opportunity for young athletes to showcase their skills and passion for soccer. Thank you to Xavier University Aruba for organizing this great event for our youth. We are proud to be a part of this event and look forward to a day filled with thrilling matches and memorable experiences.”

The Xavier King’s Day Cup will kick off with an exhilarating opening ceremony commencing at 8:00 am. A total of 16 teams will compete throughout the day, with games starting from 8:30 am. The tournament will culminate with the U-7 championship game at 2 pm, followed by the U-9 final at 7:00 pm.

As part of the festivities, Xavier University Aruba will host a family fun day on campus, providing entertainment, swimming, and delectable food and beverages for players and their families. This event promises to be a joyous celebration of King’s Day in Aruba, bringing together the community in a spirit of camaraderie and sportsmanship.
