The site is in a small village named Happisburgh on the east coast of England. It is an abandoned industrialized area famous for a historical water erosion accident which lead to collapse and over 200 deaths. The architecture serves as a memorial to the death and advocates new technologies and solutions dealing with this natural disaster. The project consists of zones of historical exhibitions and contemporary studies & projects. Portfolio. Revetments used to provide some protection for the cliffs, but following a storm in 1990 when 300m of revetment was destroyed, the sea was able to start eroding the land beyond. The situation has gone from bad to worse as the revetment maintenance was abandoned Plans for new defences have failed due to various objections and changing guidelines from the government department DEFRA (Department for the Environment, Food and Rural Affairs).

The museum is made up of two parts: Modern Zone and Hisotrical Zone. The Historical Zone is a gallery with a mini cinema space displaying historical events of distructions by coastal erosion, while the Modern Zone is the major part of the museum, consisting of a Cliff Stablization Technology Zone, a Structural Components Zone, a Projects Zone and a Urban Models Zone. The architecture, on one hand, serves as a monument to the death in the distructions, whereas on the other hand, is expected to introduce and record human’s developments in erosion prevention.

The project focuses on the study of how dwelling is combined with planting and food production. The architecture contains six blocks surrounded by a larger area of outdoor farms and water, designed for three families and three singles who are self-occupied. Each block contains a bedroom, a kitchen, an indoor farm, a bathroom and a garage etc., whereas every three blocks are connected by a larger underground space that consists of a communal space, a shared laboratory, a number of storage rooms and a space for juice production (machine) etc.

Hidden deeply in the forest of the Upper Derwent Valley to the north of Howden Reservoir of the Peak District national park, the site is attractive as it remains a peaceful landscape and brings some fresh silence to the people coming from the noisy society. The area is currently owned by a number of water companies and access of vehicles to the whole area is usually controlled thus visitors mostly choose to ride bicycles or horses as an easier way. It is why the area is popular that it sits away from towns but not too far where noise is just avoided, whereas it is still convenient to reach.

We live in a lively world, we apprecialte the good fortune to be born hearing. However in the corners of the world there is another group of people who do not hear,. being deaf is a big barrier that keeps them away from the majority. It is estimated that there are over 10 million people who are deaf or gave a hearing loss in the U.K. And there are approximately 900 suicides per year by those who are deaf or hearing impaired. This is possibly cased by the following reasons: - Hopelessness and less social support - History of mental illness - Family, peer and relationship problems - Depression - Anger and self-esteem issues - Academic problems Although there are a number of disabled supports in the society, this is still not a fair world. What we could offer is physical helps, however, what we could not offer so far, and is seriousely needed, is psychological cares.. This project is inspired by a product named ‘Bone vibration conductor.’ It is believed that deaf people sense vibration in the part of the brain that other people use for hearing – which helps explain how deaf musicians can sense music, and how deaf people can enjoy concerts and other musical events. ScienceDaily (Nov. 28, 2001) — CHICAGO (Nov. 27) -- Deaf people sense vibration in the part of the brain that other people use for hearing – which helps explain how deaf musicians can sense music, and how deaf people can enjoy concerts and other musical events. “These findings suggest that the experience deaf people have when ‘feeling’ music is similar to the experience other people have when hearing music. The perception of the musical vibrations by the deaf is likely every bit as real as the equivalent sounds, since they are ultimately processed in the same part of the brain,” says Dr. Dean Shibata, assistant professor of radiology at the University of Washington. In order to have this project be compatible for full hearing people, studies on visual performance is also allocated, in that the sense of vibration is the ability that a hearing person is not improved, whereas visual enhancements would be more possible to be sensed. Left: individual frequency-discrimination performances. Solid and dashed lines indicate the group means for deaf and hearing subjects, respectively. The frequency difference between the two stimuli was decreased within about 60 trials with respect to the subject’s performance. Individual thresholds were calculated as a function of the last ten turning points. Right: individual change-detection performances (d). Solid and dashed lines indicate the group means for deaf and hearing subjects, respectively. The first five of the total of 600 stimuli were excluded from statistical calculations.

In this project, similar principle is studied. The picture is a key installation of the pipe organ mechanism. An additional dynamic projection is added to the typical mechanism in order to allow its audiences appreciate the music by senses of seeing. Meanwhile, vibration created by organ pipes is transferred directly in a particular way to the back of the audience. Portfolio. Xutong Zhao. De Montfort University (MArch). This project investigates how different groups of people use the same spaces differently by recording two particular kitchens (common spaces) shared by a number of male/ female students. The first two drawings is an initial observation explain that a space shared by male students has pans, plates, bowls and everything else on top of the drawers and tables whereas only few of them are stored inside, which makes the space visually busy and messy. In contrast, a shared space used by a number of female students seems to be much cleaner, that few kitchen items are left on top of the tables and drawers. But when a sectional plan(a plan cut at approximately 400mm above the ground) is produced looking into the drawers, it starts to look crowed as everything is hidden in the spaces that are not normally seen. This phenomenon is representative of how males and females think and behave in different ways even in much broader contexts. The theory behind this is partly discovered in the book Men Are From Mars Women are from Venus , in which it is explained that men and women have different key words of interests: men are much interested in power, speed, achievements and social status, whereas women are more interested in love, happiness and relationship with others. To explain the phenomenon, females think it is important to keep their common spaces clean and tidy as that may help them establish a better relationship with others. Differently, males do not think it is necessary to keep a tidy common space because whether their space is clean or not does not affect any of the things they are interested in (power, speed, achievements etc.). Besides, it is usually easier to take and return items from the top of a drawer than from the inside of it.

The device is based on the same idea of the initial drawings but tends to explain the observation in a more interesting way, it is a 3D model of the same spaces. The device combines a selective set of plans and sections into one panel and has two layers. Normally it remains an outcome of ordinary plans and sections, however, with a movable system that connects all the drawers, the device can switch to another mode that all the drawers are open and everything hidden inside the spaces are shown. The isometric drawings on the right explain the theory of the mechanism. The device has two separate systems that control males’ kitchen plans/ sections and females’ kitchen plans/ sections respectively.

The site of this project is located in the central area of the city of Naples, Italy. The site is on Via Maria Longo, an area mainly surrounded with a nursery school (Istituto Campanella) and a number of hospitals (Ospedale degli Incurabili) and residential buildings. The site is hidden behind the giant building of Istituto Campanella and is very busy because of the limited access and rooms for parking. But it is attractive as it forms a complicated layout of landscape as well as a great level change (up to 15 metres). Like every other places of the city, this area is old, messy and chaotic and full of graffiti on the walls, cars and even ground, but the city seems to have no problem with this since it does not stop its graffiti from going everywhere. However, this is concerned as unhealthy for children in Naples, it is certainly not a great idea for children to live and learn in such a poor environment (apart from the street layout of the site, the learning and living environment within the existing school is poor, too).

The aim of this project is to provide a more comfortable, friendly and harmonious environment for children education. The new architecture is an extension of the existing school but only focuses on painting training, children are encouraged to paint their own paintings in forms of group and solo work. The architecture is proposed to have an ability of changing its surrounding environment by having children’s paintings exhibited on top of the existing site. In order to achieve this, selected work of paintings are suspended on a special machine and sent outside of the building. When enough number of paintings are exhibited this way, the site will be reformed by the architecture and children’s paintings, therefore becoming a more suitable environment for children.

The internal space of this architecture consists of four floors, including a small gallery, a reception/security office and a kitchen on the ground floor, two floors of painting studios specific for children and one floor of studios for children and adult, the rooftop is accessible allowing additional outdoor activities. In order to create a suitable lighting environment for painting, three types of natural light are occupied: large area of openings is designed to generate north light as the primary source of illumination, the east facade uses translucent material to allow additional light, and a light well is introduced to illuminate the ramps and stairs.

Birkenhead is a town within the Metropolitan Borough of Wirral in Merseyside, England. Historically in Cheshire, it is on the Wirral Peninsula, along the west bank of the River Mersey, opposite the city of Liverpool. At the 2001 Census, the town had a population of 83,729. Birkenhead is perhaps best known as a centre for ship building, as a seaport and its related industries. The site of this project is in the coastal area of River Mersey, based on the original footprint of Birkenhead Priory - the oldest architecture of Merseyside. It is a little piece of silence in the noisy but not very popular city, a small historic and religious area surrounded by factories and dry docks.

On a day when there is a cremation: heated air and gas emitted from the natural gas-driven furnaces is cooled from 1000째c down to around 150째c by a dedicated water cooler before it goes for gas treatment. It is estimated that in the process of a typical 90-min cremation of an average adult, around 525KWh of heat energy could be recovered. (350KW *1.5h = 525KWh) On a day when there is no cremation: a Ground Source Heat Pump (300% efficiency, providing 71,000KWh of renewable enrgy every year) and Combined Heat and Power (CHP) system will be used to provide the building with necessary amount of energy.
