In these photographs I have shown the cultural aspect which is the location in which the photographs have been taken. I wanted to show the cultural aspect of the photographs as I felt that this helps to link to the meaning of the photograph. By showing the location I am revealing the culture the photographs are representing and it gives a clearer idea as to where the photographs have been taken and so a clearer idea of the background behind the model and the photographs. On the page beforehand I have written words over the photographs which all link to the photograph and the literal meaning behind it. These words help to emphasize the thoughts behind the images and allow the audience to have an easier thought process into what is happening in the photographs.
In these photographs I have shown a section of the face on a smart phone pulling the same expression. I felt that by doing this, I am able to show how the smart phone has become a part of the model, and how technology may now be seen as just as important as human existence. I wanted to show the idea of a model in a naturalistic environment and so have shown them in a coffee shop, which we can assume from their clothing that they have gone to after a day of work. In these photographs I wanted to show how the smart phone represents a part of them and I wanted to show an importance in the props that are involved in human existence.
In this re-shoot I have tried to show an aspect of the models life to represent his existence, henceforth my theme of human existence. I decided to show him dressed as if just come from work and relaxing in a coffee shop. I have used props such as a drink, a phone and car keys, which all link into the existence of the model that I am using and they symbolise a meaning behind the prop, which then gives the whole composition more meaning. I have shown the model in a natural environment to keep the theme simple and realistic, as if the photoshoot had not been planned. I have focused in on certain areas in some of the photographs, such as the hands, so that I could represent the power behind different aspects of the body and how they can all link to human existence. I have chosen to show the model in a suit as I felt that I wanted to create a representation of class in the photographs. I wanted to show him as a middle class man, which I am then hoping to contrast with other photoshoots by using lower class and different outdoor environments. I have chosen to edit the photographs in a black and white effect as I felt that the absence of the colour helped to make the photograph more emotional and defines the shadows in a much clearer way, which can make the photograph seem more powerful and more aesthetic to the audience.
With these photographs, I felt that they did not work very well as it was difficult to get good photographs of the car in use while being aware of health and safety. I also felt that it was difficult to get good lighting in the photographs as there were so many different details that the flash could latch onto. I have tried different edits and experimented with different angles and different digital and manual techniques, however I felt that the use of a car in my work would not show enough control over the quality of my work.
These photographs show a mixture of two photo-shoots. The photograph of the scenery links to these two other photographs as I have shown the use of a car. I wanted to show use of a car as I felt that this is an important aspect of human existence. I wanted to represent the idea of transport and how transport has affected human existence. I have photographed a moving vehicle and the vehicle being used from different angles. By using different angles I was able to get an idea of what works well with the photographs involving the vehicle. I was able to use the mirrors in the car to create good reflections in order to show technical meanings to my photographs.
In these photographs I have tried to show human existence through showing one models day in life. I have shown him walking through different locations. I have been mainly focused on him walking as I felt that the image of walking showed human existence well as it showed the process of movement and existence as we move and life continues constantly. The black and white effect allows me to create a more emotional atmosphere in the photograph and allows me to express the idea of a vintage style which I feel works well with these photographs. On this particular photograph above, I have increased the clarity so that the detail in the fabric in shown in great detail, as well as the architecture such as the bricks in the wall and the dirt on the stairs. I felt that by showing just the model in the photograph, it makes the composition more personal to the audience as they are only focusing on one ‘human existence’.
In this particular image I have shown the model looking directly into the camera lens while relaxing on a bench by a fountain. I have done this as I felt that to create a personal atmosphere and a strong link between the audience and the photograph, I had to create an eye contact. I have not placed the model in the centre as I wanted the audience to be able to appreciate the other factors in the photograph, such as the fountain, as these aspects also link to my theme, human existence, as they are man made aspects of the world which show us how human existence has created the world and how we are sitting right next to it, appreciating it in its every form.
In my edits I have tried to experiment by using effects that I do not usually use. I have shown the Harris shutter effect, which is shown on the left. I felt that this allowed me to show a different aspect of the photograph and made it look abstract and attracted an audience due to the bright colours. I did not like this effect as I felt that it did not link to my theme of human existence. In the edit shown on the right, I have shown a very simple edit where I have decreased all of the saturation levels, except with the colour yellow. I felt that this made the photograph more interesting as it showed slight colour, bringing the photograph to life more. With the other edits I have shown, such as the layering and the overlay effect, I felt that these worked very well as they help me to link to time as they represent the idea of a journey, which can link to time in a technical aspect and symbolic aspect as it shows how time is used in order to get somewhere.
In these photographs I have tried to carry on the theme of walking as I feel that this is a huge aspect on human existence and has been a big influence of mine throughout this theme. Walking relates well to human existence as it is such a huge part of our lives. By showing this in my work, I feel that I can show clear evidence of my theme by showing repetition in the images, by overlapping different images that all link and are in the same location. I have experimented with different effects and different colours in order to try and get an idea of how I can display my work and how I can create a final piece which links to human existence.
In this photoshoot i have tried to show a narrative through photographs. i have shown a series of photographs that show the movement and process of someone going somewhere, yet it is unclear where they are going... I have shown the process of them stopping and starting journeys to represent the idea that time is a key factor in a journey. i want to show the idea that time is a huge factor in human existence.
In this edit I have shown the image in black and white with tinges of yellow shown. I liked this edit as I felt that it gave more life to the photograph and created a more life-like aspect to the photograph when the audience looks at it. The yellow connotes the peace in the photograph and represents the idea of a subtle change. The light colour works well against the black and white effect as it subtly adds life to the photograph without drawing our attention away from the literal meaning of the photograph. By having the model so close, yet looking away from the camera, it is clear to see that the photograph is natural and has not been planned. It is as if a photograph was randomly taken when he was walking near by. I liked this idea as it allowed me to create a personal atmosphere to the photograph as the audience can then feel like they are there with the model and it gives them a closer perspective of the photographers mind and thoughts as they can closely see into the depths of the photograph.
The idea behind this photoshoot is to capture images that relate to human existence, but do not necessarily show human existence. I wanted to capture images that I could link with human existence to help me gain ideas for my final piece and to help me get a different perspective and a more detailed idea of ‘human existence’ and the depth I could go into on the photography. I have shown images showing nature in an eerie atmosphere. I have done this to create the idea that although these areas may not be man made (which links to human existence as they show the process of our world and how we have adapted), the photographs link as we understand that the area is used frequently as there is a walking path and houses. I have subtly used props in the photographs such as the wing-mirror of a car to show the human existence through different props that we know are frequently used in our existence.
In these images I have tried to show a contrast between the brightly coloured green grass, to the dark and eerie black and white walk way. I felt that this allowed me to experiment with different effects and showed me how contrast can work between photographs and gave me ideas on how I can display black and white and colour images together in a piece.
In this photograph, I have manipulated it to put 2 pictures into one. I chose a photograph of my model from one photo shoot, and placed him into this photograph. I did this because without the model in the photograph, the picture seems very empty. The misty weather creates an eerie atmosphere to the audience and creates a question as to what the photograph is of. I placed the walking model into the photograph as I have experimented with different photographs on how to capture somebody walking in a photograph. I have shown different models walking in different locations and so I thought this would be a good experiment, to see whether I could make it seem like someone was walking in this particular location, when actually they weren’t. This edit also helped me to develop my Photoshop skills and allowed me to experiment with new ideas and showed me how I can manipulate photographs to look like something that they actually are not. When I took the original photograph of the location, I was on my own so I could not show a model walking along the footpath. I wanted to show this later on in a different photo shoot, however, the weather had cleared up, and I would have preferred the misty and eerie setting for my photographs.
NATURAL
home environment EXPRESSION
TIME relationship
In this photoshoot I was focusing on human existence through the natural settings of existence. I have shown two models in conversation in a home environment, using props such as newspapers and books to represent the idea that they are in a home setting and that this form of human existence is to show a homely atmosphere. I have shown a serious expression contrasted to a serious expression. I have done this to show different emotions through human existence and to show how these expressions can strongly show the feeling of the photograph and the atmosphere that the photograph is creating. In the photographs I have increased the clarity to create more detail into the photograph so that the image has more to focus onto. I have purposefully shown just sections of the male models face while showing the female in the background to represent the idea that they are in conversation, but to show that the females reactions are the most important section of the photographs. In this photoshoot I was particularly keen on experimenting with different angles in which I could grasp what I wanted to show with human existence in my photographs. I felt that by showing an over the shoulder shot where only certain parts of one person is seen, I was able to clearly show the setting of a conversation. This helps me to link with human existence as it shows how we can communicate and how we exist in each others presence. I have done different experiments with my camera using auto and manual focus so that I could try focusing on different aspects of the photograph and blurring out other sections. This allowed me to decide on what looks best in a photograph and showed me how important focus is on a photograph as it can so easily determine where the audience focuses when looking at the photograph.

Using shutter speed helped me to link to human existence as it allowed me to show different ways in which I could express the idea of human existence. Shutter speed meant that I could show an image with one person, although it looks as if there is more than one in the image. I felt that this could show human existence effectively as it could allow me to express the idea that in one person, there can be many different aspects to them to create that one person, therefore representing our existence as a huge aspect to the world, as we need different aspects of ourselves in order to create our own human existence.
This photoshoot shows me experimenting with different camera effects. I have shown experimentation with shutter speed as I wanted to see if it was a good way in which I could incorporate the idea of time into my theme of human existence. I had an idea that shutter speed would allow me to effectively show the idea of movement and would enable me to link human existence and time together well, as I would be able to show movement and how it is effect by time. When using different shutter speeds, I was able to capture very different images. I used a dark forest setting as I felt that this would help me to give an eerie look. I was originally hoping to use a train station, however was unable to get to the train station, so I used this location as a plan B. I got the model to do simple movements such as moving forward slowly, walking in different directions and I also made him stand stationary while I moved the camera to see if this would create a different effect. I felt that this photoshoot was successful and that I was able to get some good outcomes, however I felt that the shutter speed effect was not creating the right atmosphere as it gave off too much of an eerie setting, whereas I was hoping for a natural setting.
In these images I have tried to show human existence through personalities and technology put together. From research I have done, I ave found that majority of our generation feel like their smart phone is a part of them and that they cannot go anywhere without it. I feel like this is an important aspect for me to mention in my work as it allows me to show how time has changed through different human existences. I have taken a photograph of a part of their face and then taken a photograph of the picture and the actual face pieced together. I wanted to show this as I wanted to represent the idea that the phone is a part of our new generation and a part of human existence. The picture slightly distorts the image of the face which I think worked well as it represent the idea that the smart phone is distorting us and our human existence. I felt that this also linked with the shutter speed work that I have done as that emphasizes the distortion in our existence and allowed me to show and represent in my work that although we are not perfect, we are still a very important aspect of human existence. I also felt that it was important for me to include parts of their personality through the phone. To do this I have shown sections of their idols face and shown it as a part of them. I have also used the rolling stones tongue as this is their favourite band. By doing this I was able to connote the idea that personality’s have started to come through the use of technology and smart phones, therefore I have represented the personality through the smart phone.
This photoshoot is showing the existence of natural settings. I have shown the model making cups of tea, reading the newspaper, looking into the fridge, eating and looking around the house. I have done this to show how simple aspects of everyday life link to human existence as they are what make up a day in our existence. Showing the use of a smart phone is my literal idea. With this I wanted to express the idea that social media is taking over our existence and that phones are becoming a part of us, which was my technical and symbolic idea. I have shown the model in their normal life through the screen of a phone. This is representing the idea that the phone has become a part of them and that existence has changed over time so that smart phones have now become a part of our existence, as well as technology. For the cultural aspect of the photograph, I have shown her in a homely environment, which was to represent her culture as middle class and relaxed as she has the money for a phone, although is not shown as glam and upper class. The problems I faced in this photoshoot was being able to show all of the props in the photograph while focusing on different aspects. I struggled to create a particular focus as the magazines showed different colours which attracted an audience. To fix this, I have edited the photograph by decreasing saturation, this was to dim the colours so they are less visible to the audience.
In this photoshoot, I have shown a narrative through the process of catching a train. I have shown the morning beforehand to give a naturalistic setting and to stylize the composition in a way that seems personal to myself and the audience as they can easily relate to the images, as he is eating breakfast and getting changed. I have shown a variety of images and angles when at the train station as I wanted to make sure I could capture all of the important aspects, such as the platform, the model and the train/ train track. I felt that I needed to include all of these aspects so that it is clear where the model is. In these images I am pleased with how the colour has come out. I feel that the colour helps to give a realistic setting and acts comforting towards the audience as they can feel the natural colours and become familiar with them. I have digitally drawn around the first images with red lines. This is because when doing manual edits on my work, I am hoping to use stitching. This acted as a prototype to my stitching as I wanted a rough idea as to what it would look like. The literal idea behind this photoshoot was to capture a clear narrative of a journey. I wanted to be able to show how the journey to get somewhere so that I could link my human existence theme back to time. The technical idea behind my work was to create strong colours and to increase the clarity so that the detail in the image becomes more visible, so that the audience and visualize more in the image and appreciate more detail in the photograph. Showing the natural setting was my symbolic idea. I wanted to show a relaxed culture and symbolise a teenagers life. The narrative creates the idea that the model is fairly relaxed about what they are doing and so I have symbolised relaxation and a relaxed culture. I felt that the less successful photos in this photoshoot were shown in the forest. These photographs I felt did not have a clear enough link. Although you have to walk through this park to get to the train station, I felt that it looked random and did not work with the other photographs.
The idea behind this photoshoot was to capture a natural conversation and to capture abstract photographs that show human existence in a way that is not usually portrayed. The conversation shows human existence as it is showing how different people can involve in each other and how human existence can be shown with different people. I have also shown each character by themselves. I have shown the male engaging with someone, yet we cannot see the other person as I felt that this showed human existence in a more personal way as we can focus in on one person and how their facial expressions express how they feel and therefore shows their particular human existence. In the single photographs of the female I have tried to create the idea that she is bored and in a relaxed state of mind. We can see her facial expressions and postures which allow us to think about her existence and gives us an idea of how she is feeling and the emotions towards what she is doing. The literal idea behind this photoshoot was to capture images of people engaging with each other to show human existence. The technical idea was to create stronger colours to show a more naturalistic setting to the photograph and to bring in the idea that human existence is not necessarily the most important aspect of life, other existences such as plants and other natures are also important. The symbolic meaning of the photoshoot is that human existence is not the only important aspect, we evolve around nature, which I have tried to express by increasing the saturation levels of the grass and the plants. The cultural aspect shows to be upper class as we can see the models are smartly dressed and have good posture. They are in an environment that is not usual to a common environment and so we get the idea that they may be in an upper class setting. In this photoshoot, I felt that the lighting was perfect and allowed me to create aesthetically pleasing photographs as I was able to capture the best aspects of the person, however I felt that the photographs do not link to the rest of my work and the idea of time and a narrative.
In this photoshoot I was aiming to show contrast between human existence and non existence. I wanted to show how although we may exist in the present, there are still many aspects of life that are non existent and are ruined, unable to be recovered. I wanted to show the model acting as if there was no change to his life. I felt that it was important to show how his life stays the same and carrys on, even though the location he is in is in ruins.
