11.Backtracking from the Yellow River 12.Composing Song of Qiu Ling 13.Teaching rites and music on the Apricot Pavilion 14.Dreaming of coffin placed between tow columns 15.Packing luggage and parting

The design includes two aspects: one is about the spatial narrative content; the other is about the case of spatial narrative design, and summarizes the methods of spatial narrative design. Combining the two aspects, the research concluded the outline of Confucius memorial narrative script. Then combining the site analysis, and finishing the Confucius memorial space design experience by adding the detail of Confucius' life events.

SPACIAL SCRIPT

EVENTS Base on the research of Confucius's life events, compose the basic logic of space, create a narrative order of the memorial before express the Confucius' life by space language.

THE LENGTH OF WALLS In order to express the rhyme of events, there are some northsouth walls which are of difference lengths. The length represent whether the event is intense or easy like music.

THE FREQUENCY OF WALLS In order to express the change of events, there are some eastwest walls which obstruct people's movement. The frequency of walls represent that the frequency of the events, if the event change, the movement will change by wall.

COMBINATION Using the tow methods above, the space script is finished and the experience of special rhythm is delivered to visitors.

FLUCTUATIONS OF SPACE In order to express the Confucius's vagrant life, there some up and down platforms which stand for difference life conditions. Down means low or upset and vice versa.

CLOSE EXTENT OF SPACE In order to express the Confucius's emotion in each event, there difference close extent of space, some parts which mean depressed are narrow and close, some parts which mean ease are opened. Also the sight is controlled by the height of walls.

MOVEMENT AND EXPERIENCE The movement of the memorial is formed after combining methods above, meanwhile some narrative details are added into the movement, for example plants, water, sculpture and calligraphy.

SCENE 3

SCENE 2

SCENE 1

Teaching rites and music on the Apricot Pavilion

Kuang people raise the siege

Meeting with the duke of Qi state in Jiagu

Withdrawing to revise Shi and Shu

Learning rites from Lao Tzu

In this scene, the sight becomes straitness dramatically which contrasts to the previous scene. It means the transformation of Confucius' life. The event is about Confucius was sieged by Kuang people.

In this scene, the sight becomes opened specially, which stands for Confucius's knowledge and influence. This part is higher than other parts and walls are the lowest in the whole memorial space.

In this scene, people was caught in space full with doubt, which metaphorize Confucius's sense of puzzled. There many walls overlapped which make a numerous of possibilities, and people cannot figure out direction.

Specifically, walls are the highest and make visitors feel depressed. Also the material of walls is stain which makes people feel cold, and it metaphorizes the vagrant life.

Furthermore when visitors step up into this space, they can overlook the Nishan Hill and the Nishan lake.

In this scene, people can see a peaceful pool which reflects sky, trees and people themselves. Trees rushed by wind sound like Sha-Sha and water ripple. The bottom of the pool is carved letters from Lunyu, when people stir water, letters and reflections are obscure.

In this scene, the sight becomes opened again, it means Confucius' mindset when he was old. The scene try to express the dream of old Confucius who always fantasy the harmonious world. Confucius believed that the mountain and the water stand for Ren(benevolence) and Zhi(wisdom) respectively. Visitors walk into the garden while cannot find out the pavement, at the same time, they also can hear the sound of spring.

When visitors walk on the gravel pavement, it sounds peaceful. The scene is quiet and metaphorizes the Confucius's lifestyle.

In addition, the sight as same level as water, specifically the human experience is unique. Meanwhile the water that flows downwards along walls and whispers metaphorize the conversation between Confucius and Lao Tzu.

Creative community ARCHITECTURE RENOVATION DESIGNER:XU YANG, YAO SHOUJUN, Silvia Martinez Lage TUTOR:Francesco Scullica,Peter Di Sabatino, Gisella Veronese,Mauro Afro Borella SEMESTER: FALL 2015

PERMANENTE NUOVA The Permanente Nuova is a building from the Milan architect Renato Radici. The building was built in 1955-57 under the name “Palazzo delle Esposizioni” at Piazza Garibaldi in Cantù municipality is a post-rationalist building. It was though as a exhibition building for furniture pieces. The architect had in account for the design the environmental and the surrounding area. The strange shaped plan comes from the availed land. The height relates with the church in the same square as the building could not cover it. The original building had a on the lower and ground floor a meeting room for over 400 people, a cafeteria, a shop, offices... The materials for the ground floor were stone “brecciola di Lovere”, walnut and a flooring of venetian glass mosaic, following the design of the Italian artist Lucio Fontana (the mosaic remains nowadays, but in a very poor condition).

SECTION

After the analysis of the building we have conclude that the shape has been though in order to render the view from east to west the most important one (which is the one to the square and to the mountains in that order). The north and south view are only possible if the viewer stands in front of the window. We have though that working with the views was important, but we decided change the work of the views inside to not only relate with the outside, but also with an imaginary outside-inside. We propose to create the opening following the already open space in the ceiling, This one also follows a path in between two big windows (north and south located). And also in line with the big circular scales of the center of the building. The light will be reflected on the space in order to diff use it and create a better illumination and ambience. To do this, we have calculated to only eliminated two beams and following the structure add in between the windows two new pillars.

DETAILS In the definition of the “MIXING” spaces, we want to design the space that people can be free to work at any space of the certain area in the building. In order to keep the floor free of visual barriers and not “define” with walls the working spaces, we have defined several “areas” with completely different atmosphere. On the west part, with a more private view and afternoon natural light, we propose mainly reflective activities. In the center of the building, where everyone has to pass by, the most alive part, the collaborative activities. Around the center opening, we create the residential part where their own personal living spaces are located to provide better living condition with good ventilation and light . Personal space does not mean “private” in the traditional way for us. Personal is more focused in providing a place for “living”, but here we are living in community. On the east the experimental activities take place, facing the public square of the city, with mutual view from people outside during day and night.

LIGHT OF TOMORROW INTERNATIONAL VELUX COMPETITION DESIGNER: XU YANG HUANG ZIJIAN SEMESTER: SPRING 2012

LOCATION

In the contemporary urban space, there are some abandon playgrounds. Most of them are embedded in the original figure ground of the urban site. They are exposured under the sunlight, which have the potential opportunities to become the comfortable public space. We focus on this point. Therefore, we are attempting to design a conceptual shelter on the playground, which aims to make this shelter adapt to the sunlight changing in a day, meanwhile we may have opportunities to create the new light landscape.

By controling the speed of rotating units and the relationship between holes and smart units, we create a temporary Staying space based on the light changing in a day.

We firstly focus on the program of different usages on the playground. Then we redefine the function of this pavilion by the time changing in a day. We find a way to make the new elationship between light, shadow and the program.

751D·PARK was a old factory in 1950's. But now it is a fashion park , also attracts a lot of designer and actor that take shows. The old factory is retained and becomes intreseting things. For us, it is a symbiosis phenomenon, which old buildings, new buiiding and function is a symbiotic relationship. So our installation will relay on the bridge and wall, bamboo becomes a new thing in the site, as well as live with other things.

CONCEPT

On the modern city, new elements will appear constantly, and they always cover the old exiting thing. However we want to ask should we demolish the old thing completely? As for the metabolism of the city, we consider the new and old can develop together instead of replacement. As we suggest, it is a sustainable approach for city development. Therefore we want to find a new way that our installation can live with the exiting building environment, to find a symbiosis form which reflect the new approach for city development. As a traditional material, bamboo is real defined by us in the contemporary condition. We design the installation in order to express the transition from chaos to order.
