SPACE AS COMMODITY INCUBATOR DEVELOPEMENT IN HUAQIANGBEI Adaptation / Renovation / Fabriaction

DESCRIPTION Huaqiangbei, a subdistrict of Shenzhen, is a wellknown cluster among the world as a manufacturing hub and electronics marketplaces. For innovators, it is regarded as “China’s Silicon Valley”. Huaqiang- bei, with a total area only of 2.9sq. km, generates large revenue and attracted lots of innovative minds to the area trying to grab the opportunities. Instead of the low costs on resources and faster prog- ress of frabrication provided by the favourable geo- graphical position, however, what else could Huaqiangbei provided to cultivate creativity? This project is a response to existing plans and mass- ings in Shangbu Industrial Zone, a representative zone for Huaqiangbei, which is originally mixed-use mid- dle-rise buildings with commercial, residential, and industrial uses. The Zone has significant difference in contrast to the newly renovated Huaqiang Road crammed with shopping malls and high-rise buildings. The propoal takes on the concept of using “garage” as a metaphor. A garage for maker represents a small working unit that detached but closed to their acco- modation. Through the incorporation of CNC technol- ogy, “garage” space is applied to the site providing additional area for nurturing creativity and enhanc- ing social connection.

SHOW THE CARE BY SMALL LITTLE MOMENTS Frabrication Lab

The current and on-going re-developemnt plan of HuaQiangBei have a trend to demolish the existing middle wise building and erect giant malls and high-rise buildings. The action tears down the urban frabric and lets no possibilities of neighbourhood activities. In contrast to the “money-orientated” approach, this project proposed the social connector in a “parasite like” scale.

PHOTOGRAPHY: TAKING/BEING MEDIA THEME TRANSFORMATION A Pavilion of Light and Shadow

(04)

DESCRIPTION

(02)

Media is an inseparable element for architecture in mordern time. Whether featuring in videography or photography; Wherther dedicating surfaces for artworks or platforms for performance. Architecture serves as a film and a paper to let someone transform their inspiration to production. Architecture allows intervention of other medias enriching itself.

(06)

On the contrary, instead of inspiring, this project get inspiration from photography. The pavillion achieved ideas from the techniques of photo taking, composition and editing to spacial design. ‘Photography is the arts of capturing motion into moment.’ The concept of the pavillion is to let people experience the freezed moment under motion.

MOMENTS GONE MARITIME EDUTAINMENT CENTRE DESIGN Harbourfront Genotypical Studies

DESCRIPTION Kai Tak airport was once ranked as dangerous airport wtih adjoning skyscrapers and mountains located to the north and its runway pointing along Victoria Harbour. Landings to Kai Yak were regarded as challenging to experience and technically demending. This project takes the site on Kai Tak Runway and reimagine the possibility of the site in transforming to a edutainment center, with the purpose of educating and entertaining. With its closure in 1998, with the developement of the city, the identity of Kai Tak being an airport was hard to be realized by time to time. That moment when planes flew over so close to our roof, when we could saw planes vanishing in the gap of the street. Those were memory and markings of the city’s growth. The project attempted to integrated the gone moments into building and landscape, space and circulation. Visitor could walk above the building, across the street, through the obstacles or into the water. Experience the perception of pilots approaching the airport in a metaphorical way. Or, otherwise, visitors could look upward seeing the path as the planes flew through.

METAPHORICAL SPACE CHINESE RELIGION TRANSFORMATION Buddhism Hierarchy Museum

DESCRIPTION “Kleshas, in Buddhism, are mental states that cloud the wholesomes action.’ Different choices made shall cause different outcomes in life. Whenever we have to make decision on various circumstance, we based on the information we knew and experience we prossessed. Our knowlwde and decision could lead us to an expected path, or vice versa. This project attempt to incorporate the wisdom and theory of buddhism into the organization of spaces and the content of spaces in a museum. Spaces of the museum were composed to let the visitors experience through the process of ‘Lost’, ‘Search’ and ‘Realize’. Similar components with varied compositions were applied through out the museum to lure the eyes of visitors. The perception throughout the museum space would be familiar while different.

emerged facade and landscape

INTERNATIONAL VELUX AWARD COMPETITION FOR STUDENTS OF ARCHITECTURE

DESCRIPTION “When erecting a structure on a lot of land, it is an inevitable fact that the oniginal content of the site was changed.“ Studying how to emerge the built to the nature has been a hot topic for architectural design. The idea of this work is to design a pavilion that could be seen and unseen where there is change of light intensity and angle.

varied reflectivity under light intensity

The facade of the pavilion has applied glass with different gradient of reflective rate. The part with highly reflective glass would show the reflected scenery on the facade which made part of the pavillion disappeared. The glass with low reflective rate, however, would show the landscape behind the viewpoint. In daytime, the glass facade of the pavilion was invisible due to the visible. Translucent reflection and transparent landscape merged together as whole image luring the visual perception.

YIN TIN BRIDGE DESIGN COMPETITION FOR TAI O TWIN BRIDGES

DESCRIPTION Ths project is a competition entry named ‘Tai O Twin Bridges’ organized by the CEDD in 2013. The competition asked two new bridge designs for Yin Tin and Po Chun Tam in Tai O. The bridges would serving daily use of the local and provide remarkable landmark for Tai O. interesstingly, the bridges were required to be openable for letting the dragon-boat to pass through during spcific festivals. This projects presents the bridge design in Yin Tin. The span for the Yin Tin bridge was about 102m long. Following the requirement, the design proposal provides a 3.8m clear width allowing passing by of ambulance in Tai O. A sculptural pedestrian bridge design on two end was formed based on the pattern of the surrounding landscape. There are up and down designed for the pedestrian bridge to forming platform and let people have closer distance with water. This also provides viewing platform for appreciating the dragon boat event during festival. The middle part (16m) of the bridge was designed to be strenchable allowing the possibility of opening up the bridge.

VILLAGE HOUSE FANLING, NEW TERRITORIES, HK SCHEMATIC DESIGN CLIENT PRIVATE RESIDENCE SITE AREA 50 SQ.M. DESCRIPTION The cost for bidding a piece of land and building a dweling in Hong Kong shall cost billion. Owning a custom-design residence in Hong Kong is a privilege, either you are wealthy enough to pay for it or you are granted for it. Since the British Conial Era, the government compomised with the indigenous inhabitants that male members of the village preserved the right to apply for small houses in order to protect the tradition of villages. The Client of this project inherited the piece of land from his parent. The lot was sized 5m x 11m and surrounded by other units on its four sides. Considering the closeness with surounding buildings, the Client requested to set the house back leaving space for internal garden and backyard. As a result, the floor plate of the house was reduced as 3m x 9m. Workig on projects with limited area was always a good excercise to explore the essentials in design. DESCRIPTION This is a drawing exercise based on an architectural drawing named ‘Envisioning Architecture, 1936’ by Oscar Nitzchke. The drawing by Oscar present a middle-rise building of commercial use. There shown a structural frame in the middle part of the building holdinig up the billboard of different shops. High-rise building had already became a common form In the year of 1936. Oscar Nitzchke see the phenomenon that billboard become part of the facade of buildings and produced his exagger- ated drawing with neon signs and posters. Nowadays, influenced by the advancing technologies, more possibilities were available for the facade. Digital screens, interactive panell and light, there are much more ways that the facade could communicate with the street now.

PATTERN STUDY GRAPHICS EXERCISE

DESCRIPTION This study done during an academic project of Mei Ho House renovation. The project intention was to redesign the facade and improve the spatial experience for the building aiming to change the use of the building from unused public housing building to a youth hostel. Mei Ho House, one of the oldest public housing in the history of Hong Kong, designed with the focus more on the function then the aesthetic. Very few decorative details were found during site visit to the building and majority of them were in simple geometric form. As an aim to raise the interestness of the building, a study on combinations of simple geometric forms was done. Only forms of square and circle were selected as the base for making more complicated ones. By the rules of displacement, sizing and compositioning, the outcome were satisfying.
