

2019: PARTICIPATION OF YOUNG PEOPLE When one talks about participation, one assumes that vulnerable youth is not active, resulting in their contribution to society being denied or invisible. However, in Youth Express Network, we believe that vulnerable youth has a lot of potential. For this reason, we decided to focus our 2019 Work Plan in bringing together different layers of society together to claim that vulnerable youth’s participation is in fact real, effective and promising. Our Work Plan was called « Shake the Box! - Alternative ways of participation ». It was composed of 3 international activities: a seminar for youth/social workers, a training course for youth and an evaluation meeting. The work plan also included a local phase allowing each partner organisation to work at local level towards implementing a youth-led action. This work plan was a success, and you can read all about its process in this report! 2019 also marked the end of two KA2 projects that started back in 2017: the capacity building project « Entrepreneurship for CultYOUre » (EU4YOU) focusing on social and cultural entrepreneurship, and the strategic partnership « Digitalise it », on Digital Storytelling. Additionally, we took part in 8 more international projects, this time coordinated by our partners: a social media campaign on migration and media literacy, a training course on sex education, a mobile youth exchange on the camino of Santiago, a project on youth political participation, a cross-border partnership on youth friendly urbanisation and a project on human rights and social inclusion.
Our french-german cross-border and local work (Strasbourg, France) continued with our long-time partners Arbeit und Leben, the Eurometropole of Strasbourg and many other partners. The Network grew bigger at this year’s General Assembly (GA) as we welcomed one new member organisation, from the Netherlands: Stichting - Be Innovated. In total, this year’s activity gathered more than 1400 participants, young people, youth and social workers and youth organisations! The work of Y-E-N would not be possible without the involvement of all. We would like to thank and congratulate all of you for your hard work: young people, youth/social workers, Board members, volunteers, staff, partners, funders, supporters and friends.

ABOUT YOUTH EXPRESS NETWORK

Y-E-N / R-E-J is a European network of grass-root youth organisations. Our vision is to reach an inclusive society, where young people, their needs and participation are recognised, valued and appreciated. Our 32 member organisation in 22 different countries all work at local, regional or European level on social inclusion of young people.

Since 1993, we have organised more than 120 international training courses, seminars, cross-border and mobility projects bringing together social/youth workers and young people with fewer opportunities. We also encourage young people with fewer opportunities to make their voice heard in local, regional and international institutions, either by representing them or supporting them to create and be part of youth councils. We are full member of the European Youth Forum (YFJ) and the INGO conference of the Council of Europe.

Goal 1. Social inclusion of young people with fewer opportunities
VISION 2020
Through this goal and the objectives that subsides it, we wanted to continue to involve in our activities young people with fewer opportunities, youth workers and social workers and to keep the focus on creating opportunities for young people with fewer opportunities to participate in international youth work activities.
Following the decision of the General Assembly of Youth Express Network held in Ostia, Italy in June 2013 to research the needs of our member organisations and the young people they work with, the Board decided to create a questionnaire. In September 2013, we asked our members to complete this questionnaire, assess the needs of the youth of their country, and propose topics that Y-E-N should focus on tackling in the future. During Youth Express Network’s Board meetings in Strasbourg in November 2013 and in Gdansk in March 2014, the Board members compiled and worked on all the input from member organisations, the results from the General Assembly working groups and past strategic documents and produced a paper called “Vision 2020”.

Goal 2. Active societies towards social inclusion
This strategic document sets our goals until 2020. It is updated each year at the General Assembly and approved by vote by the attending members. The “Vision 2020” paper is founded on the values of human and social rights and the principles of non-formal education, active participation and interculturality. It helps us bring more impact and quality to our work while maintaining the focus on social inclusion of young people. The following version was approved by member’s vote during the General Assembly of 2018, in Strasbourg, France. It was implemented through the activities and initiatives of Y-E-N and our member organisations in 2019.
Through this goal and the objectives that subsides it, we wanted to focus our attention to the outside, towards the communities that we live in, towards our societies. We want them to be aware of the disadvantaged young people and to react towards social inclusion. • • • •

When establishing the goals to our vision we decided to work on 3 different levels that we identified in our strategy: young people with fewer opportunities, society and our network. We turned the 3 levels into 3 different goals, each of them having different objectives focusing on reaching the needs identified by our member organisations. Every goal has specific activities through which we will reach the goal and fulfill our vision.

RESULTS IN NUMBERS
SHAKE THE BOX! ALTERNATIVE WAYS OF PARTICIPATION
26 youth organisations coming from 17 countries were involved in this work plan. A total of 120 people took part in our three activities, including youth and social workers, young people and stakeholders, facilitators and staff members.
At Youth Express Network, we believe that vulnerable youth has a lot of potential. Through our 2019 Work Plan, we wanted to bring together different layers of society, in order for them to claim and prove together that vulnerable youth’s participation is real, effective and promising.
Thanks to the involvement of all, 24 initiatives were carried out in the frame of the work plan, all led by young people. They aimed at promoting the causes that felt important for them and tackled the issues that affected their communities.
26 youth organisations joined us on this project. In order to promote and encourage youth participation, each of them created a local delegation composed of: 1 youth/social worker in charge of coordinating/supporting the process, 2-3 young people from vulnerable groups willing to have an impact on their community, and 1 stakeholder willing to actively join and support them.
The following issues were chosen by the young people: Environment - Social inclusion - European mobility Youth empowerment - Access to public spaces - Health LGBTQIA+ rights - Gender Equality - Non formal education Human rights - Intercultural learning

This training brought together 24 participants (young people), 4 trainers and 2 staff persons. It was the second activity of the work plan “Shake the Box!“, and was hosted by our partner organisation CUBE. Your take on Europe (Germany).
Its aim was to set the foundations of the whole project and develop the capacity of each partner in supporting the participation of young people from vulnerable groups, implementing alternative ways of participation and involving stakeholders in local youth-led actions.
Its aim was to develop the competences of young people from vulnerable groups in implementing an advocacy action and advocating for the recognition and valorisation of their participation in European society.

Strategic Partnership for Youth - Digital storytelling in youth work
ABOUT
LOCAL WORKSHOPS
2019 was the last phase of our 2-year strategic partnership. This capacity building project aimed at experimenting, sharing and confronting practices on innovative and creative digital methods and tools to foster empowerment and social inclusion of young people with fewer opportunities. It was supported by the Erasmus+ programme of the European Union and the Region Grand Est.
In the frame of Digitalise it, each partner had to implement local workshops, disseminating the digital tools and methods learned during the project to young people with fewer opportunities. Here’s a list of the workshops, implemented by Youth Express Network in Strasbourg, France:
STUDY VISITS
30 participants - 6 youth organisations - 6 countries We started 2019 with two peer learning study visits: the first one between 26th - 29th of March in Rotterdam, in the Netherlands, the second one between 14th - 17th of May 2019 in Oviedo, Spain. During these study visits the partners were able to share their best practices of storytelling and digital tools in youth work. Each visit also was a great opportunity to visit successful local initiatives or organisations actively working with digital storytelling and digital tools with young people from vulnerable groups. Strategic Partnership for Youth - Cultural and Social
ABOUT 2019 also marked the final stage of this 2-year strategic partnership. The aim of this capacity building project was to develop innovative complementary pathways for boosting employability of young people through social youth entrepreneurship and providing them with tools for cultural entrepreneurship in particular. It was supported by the Erasmus+ programme of the European Union.
FINAL SEMINAR
20 participants - 8 youth organisations - 8 countries The participants of our KA2 “EU4YOU – Entrepreneurship for cultYOUre” met one last time between the 2nd - 7th of July 2019, in Strasbourg, France, for the final seminar of this Capacity Building project. One last meeting to reflect on the past two years, harvest the fruits of our work and evaluate the project. RESULTS
Together, we finalised the toolkit « Social and Cultural Entrepreneurship », recollection of the theories, examples of good practices, and job shadowings experienced, shared and discovered during the whole project.

The KA2 MARSA Project aims at countering uninformed opinions about migration through a creative and youth-friendly social media campaign of public education on the topics of migration and media literacy. Youth Express Network was mainly in charge of the French Facebook page of the campaign.
This training was dedicated to Youth Workers and aimed at enhancing youth’s ability to make conscious decisions about their sexuality and relationships, as well as their well-being and health. It was supported by the Erasmus+ programme of the European Union and gathered 24 youth workers coming from 6 youth organisations in 6 different countries.
The partners of the project gathered in March 2019 for a midterm meeting. It brought together 10 participants who discussed the next steps and objectives of the campaign. The project will officially end in April 2020. It is supported by the Erasmus+ programme of the European Union. RESULTS

The group got to share on sexual education in Europe, learn more on safe sex and relationship diversity, meet the Lithuanian Family planning organisation, conduct a survey on the local population and raise awareness on safe sex, distributing free condoms during a festival.

Mobile Youth Exchange on Migration and Storytelling

20th - 28th of May 2019 - Training course - Constanta, Romania This training course on the EU elections gathered 21 young people and aimed at giving youth workers tools to encourage the active participation and involvement of young people in the democratic voting process.
This mobile youth exchange focused on tackling current topics such as migration, integration, identity and solidarity in a unique and original way: a mental and physical journey of 9 days on the English Camino to Santiago. The project also included Storytelling as a tool to connect people and to tackle prejudices.
1st - 8th of December 2019 - Youth exchange - Strasbourg, France In December, 40 young people took part in the youth exchange Democracy Builders, follow-up of the previous Training course. It aimed at supporting the active participation of young people in democratic life, developing the dialogue between them and representatives and facilitating their understanding of the European legislative process.
It gathered a total of 25 participants coming from 5 youth organisations and 5 different countries. It was supported by the Erasmus+ programme of the European Union. RESULTS

This preparatory meeting resulted from a Euro-Mediterranean cooperation between the three twin cities Stuttgart, Strasbourg and Menzel-Bourguiba. This partnership aims at promoting youth participation, citizenship and solidarity through the transformation of a public square dedicated to cultural and sports events for young people in the city of Menzel-Bourguiba.
This project aims to engage young leaders, especially Roma and marginalized youth to promote and work on democracy and human rights, and to become active and assertive citizens. The training course Mingle and Explore Human Rights in Europe was the first activity of the project. It gathered 30 youth activists, leaders and young people from minority backgrounds. It will continue in 2020 with youth exchanges.
This gathering aimed at preparing two youth exchanges and a seminar for youth professionals that will take place in 2020. It gathered 20 young people and was supported by the OFAJ DFJW. RESULT

REGIONAL MEETING WITH CIVIC SERVICE VOLUNTEERS - March Together with our member Parcours Le Monde - Grand Est, we presented European mobilities to French and German civic service volunteers, as part of a meeting organised by the Departmental Council du Bas-Rhin and its German counterpart.
LEARNING MOBILITIES AND EXCHANGE PROGRAMMES FOR VOCATIONAL SCHOOL STUDENTS All year . 40 French and German vocational school students In partnership with Arbeit und Leben and supported by the OFAJ/ DFJW, Youth Express Network hosted groups of young German vocational school students in Strasbourg for thematic visits according to their field: gastronomy, education, electrotechnics etc.
LOCAL INFORMATION MEETING - May Youth Express Network and Parcours Le Monde - Grand Est took part in the Collective Information Evening « How to organise European and / or cross-border Youth projects? », held and organised by the House of Organisations of Strasbourg. TRAINING ON HUMAN LIBRARY - September Emmeline, our Network Coordinator and one of our volunteer participated in a 2-day training on how to organise a living library organized by the Youth Department - Council of Europe and the European Youth Center.
WORKSHOP « EUROPEAN YOUTH MOBILITY » - January 450 participants At the beginning of the year, we were invited to the international youth mobility week, organised by the highschool Le Corbusier and the Municipality of Illkirch-Graffenstaden. There, we introduced various European mobilities.
COLLABORATION WITH STUDENTS OF THE ISCOM - Oct-Jan 2020 9 participants In October, Youth Express Network met with students of the ISCOM Strasbourg, a school of communication and advertising. Over the winter the students contributed to the management of the French page of the MARSA campaign in the frame of their studies.
CROSSBORDER TRANSCULTURAL WORKSHOP 25 participants Our French member organisation Association L’Étage – Club de jeunes held a painting workshop for families of new immigrants, for which we were invited to contribute.

NEW PARTNERSHIPS
In 2020, Youth Express Network will coordinate two activities:
CIRCULAR ECONOMY FOR YOUTH (CEYOU) The CE YOU project will aim at promoting, connecting and empowering young people to engage in circular economy as a mean to deal with the danger to the environment and climate change. This project is coordinated by Pontydysgu and supported by the Erasmus+ programme of the European Union.
STUDY SESSION « SOCIAL RIGHTS ARE HUMAN RIGHTS III » This Study Session will be co-organised with Youth Social Rights Network, and foreseen for 14th - 20th June 2020 in the European Youth Center Strasbourg.
YOUTH WORK AND MUSIC FESTIVALS Universities, networks of young researchers and the network of European music festivals approached Y-E-N to become partner in an Erasmus+ KA2 project on youth work within music festivals. This project will be submitted for the April 2020 deadline.
PARTNERSHIP BUILDING ACTIVITY « VERY INCLUSIVE PARTICIPATION » (To be confirmed) If approved, this networking activity will allow our member organisations to gather and reinforce their cooperation, share their local experiences and develop new project ideas together. Foreseen for September 2020.
