QUICK FACTS NAME: Lee Alexander McQueen OCCUPATION: Fashion Designer BIRTH DATE: March 17, 1969 DEATH DATE: February 11, 2010 EDUCATION: Central Saint Martin’s College of Art & Design BEST KNOWN FOR Alexander McQueen was a London-based, English fashion designer who was head designer of the Louis Vuitton Givenchy fashion line, before starting his own line. This is a tribute to this spectaculer designer since his death in 2010 shortly after the death of his mother. One day before her funeral, on February 11, 2010, McQueen was found dead in his Mayfair, London apartment. The cause of death was determined to be suicide. Even with this tragic death, his designs still live on with the help of Sarah Burton. She is now the creative director of the Fashion Brand Alexander McQueen after working along side McQueen for over 14 years. Burton has admitted that taking over from McQueen was, at first, an intimidating prospect. “I thought: ‘How would I ever begin to begin?’ Lee’s mind was so different to anyone else’s. I knew there was no way I could pretend to be him; but I had to ask myself, what did Lee work for? For all this just to close down? I thought about what I wanted. What was best for me. Like many women my age, I do want children, but I came to think that that’s not a reason not to take up a challenge. In the end I just decided to get on with it: do my best.”

Whilst many designers are playing it safe this year in order to remain commercial, but you can rely on Alexander McQueen to go to the other extreme and bring a bit of drama to Paris. The show took place around the debris of McQueen’s previous shows and began with classic houndstooth designs, which could be interpreted as a dig at his previous employer; Givenchy. He got surreal wearing skirts as jackets, jackets as skirts, and lampshades and umbrellas as headwear. The collection was filled with vibrantly loud but ever-so-chic clashes of oversized patterns and harsh makeup which made this very much rememberable.
ish Empire He earned the British Fashion Council’s British Designer of the Year award four times, and was named Commander of the Order of the British Empire.

“Hand Craft is a huge inspiration, but after what we’ve been through to make these clothes, I do see why we had an industrial revolution.” Sarah wanted each piece to be a precious, precious thing. This went as far to an extent of firing the porcelain pieces, designed to look like shards of heraldic plates, which paved the surfaces of two corsets. But it isn’t Burton’s obsession with technique- which Alexander McQueen taught her, and which he always made sure she pushed to the limits- which made this show. Burton’s Collection was faithful to McQueens aesthetic, but it was intrinsically softer and lighter and very much more designed with a woman’s sensitivity to how clothes feel. The intent for this collection was to appear ‘icy’ and thats exactly what the result was. It was edgy and cold but Burton softened things up a bit by trimming items in lush fur or delicately fraying the edges of gowns, creating the image of a mythical snow queen.

In Sarah Burtons second collection since became Creative Director for McQueen she stamped her own label on the A/W 11/12 for Paris Fashion week. She cited “an ice queen and her court” as the inspiration for the show, saying: “ We started with a regal, noble woman, but a woman who is romantic above all, like, for instance, a princess?. Fittingly the show opened with 3 fairy tale like all white wool outfit embodying the usual McQueen aesthetic and a beautiful mix of fur trims and feather embellishments.

These are now what you call killer heels. Alexander Mcqueen invented what we are known as “crab shoes” or “Armadillo Shoes” which were showcased in his Spting/ Summer 2010 collection. These measure 12 inches from the floor to ankle. Lady gagasported the shoes in the video for her new single, Bad Romance: having sequins poured entirley over them. One model was recently cut from one of Mcqueens show after refusing to wear the creations. Models like: Abbey Lee Kershaw, Natasha Poly and Sasha Pivovarova. Abbey Lee Kershaw knows first hand how dangerous McQueens fashion can be. She immediatly fainted after walking in his Spring 2009 show reportedly due to the super-tight corset she was squeezed into. Thus refusing to wear these 12 inch killer heels.
