Captain’s log After 25 World Cruises, 800 transatlantic crossings and nearly four decades as the World’s most celebrated ocean liner, the QE2 bids farewell and makes its final voyage to Dubai where it will be transformed into a landmark attraction and floating luxury hotel. We pay our respects to one of the greatest ships ever built but thanks to Dubai, this legend will live on as it finds a permanent berth at The Palm Jumeirah. Cunard signed over this masterpiece of a vessel for US $ 100 Million to UAE based Istithmar which will ensure that the ship will be preserved for years to come. This month will see the action of the Volvo Ocean Race stopover in Cochin and the eyes of the world will be on the Queen of the Arabian sea. This historic month in Indian boating history will also see “BOAT INDIA 08” an international conference on leisure boating and yachting that will be held from December 14th to 16th in Cochin. This event will infuse the much needed stimulus for leisure boating in India and will cover every aspect of Leisure Boating industry. Many other events are scheduled along with it and would be the best time for boat lovers to drop in and have a one on one with experts and see the latest trends. Worldwide markets took a big hit last month and the downturn has trickled down to the boating market in markets like US and Europe. But the financial gloom has not dampened the spirits of the Indian boat buyer as there is a month-on-month increase in sales. This positive outlook is a good sign of the speed at which the Indian Leisure boating market is growing and soon will catch up with its other Asian neighbors who have taken the lead in this sector. Yachting Times will continue to spread boating awareness in India and help boat owners and enthusiasts stay up-todate about whats happening in the World of Boating. Capt. LETTER TO THE EDITOR CHANGE OF PLAN

Choosing the Ideal Engine Dear Captain, What brand and type of outboard engine should I consider for my 16 foot boat? Pradeep Menon, Trishur via e-mail

Dear YT, I am from Mumbai and your last few issues have made me a total marine enthusiast. I eagerly wait for every issue of YT in my mail and with each issue my eagerness to get a boat for myself is growing fast. I had planned of getting myself a new car but I guess that budget will be shifted to a boat. After all I already have a car and a boat would be a first. Thanks for all the info. Himesh Pandit, Mumbai via e-mail

You can opt for a 4 stroke motor of around 50-90 HP from Yamaha. The Yamaha 4 stroke Midrange series provides great fuel efficiency and comes in a good overall package. Moreover George Maijo Industries, Yamaha dealer in India provides good local support, which is a big plus.

Great In-Flight Reading! Hi YT, Should I import a boat from abroad or consider purchasing locally in India? Is there any cost benefit getting it directly? Hemang Trivedi, Mumbai via e-mail

Its great to hear about your boat purchase plans Himesh. Boating is the way to go. Don’t forget to send us the pics of your new boat and we will be happy to share it with the other readers. Readers like you keep us going. Thank you.

Make sure the boat has local support available in India. Otherwise you may have problems if something goes wrong. Sometimes it may work out more expensive if you were directly getting the boat and the boat may not be built to suit Indian conditions. Manufacturers like Nautilus Yachts have their direct office in India which means support is at your door step and you get the boats at great prices. Visit them at: www.nautilusyachts.com

The “Real” Water-Front Resort Jetski Rental Dear YT, I am planning to start a jetski rental business in Goa. What kind of a jetski should I buy which is both reliable and easy to maintain. I heard that 4 stroke versions are more fuel efficient than 2 stroke versions. Please advice Peter D’souza, Goa via e-mail

Dear YT, Your article on the Ritz-Carlton in the previous issue was a great read. Wow, what a property with so much to offer in terms of marine activities. Are there hotels like these in India where I can go with my family and stay for a few days. Tarun Roy, Kolkata via e-mail

Peter, for start “Jetski” is a name used by a particular manufacturer. This is actually called a Personal Water Craft or PWC. The rental business is a high usage segment and you should go in for a 2 stroke PWC only. Its easier to maintain, more durable against abuse. Yes, the fuel efficiency on the 4 stroke is better but will have a higher maintenance cost. Check out the new N Jet-800 from Nautilus or the Waverunner from Yamaha.

Great In-Flight Reading! Dear YT, I got your magazine in-flight and must say its fantastic. The quality and content is just like what I have seen in the boat magazines abroad. Enjoyed the article on what boat to buy. Keep up the great work. Mohammed Salim, Hyderabad via e-mail

Thanks Mohammed for your kind words. Our team of reporters world wide ensure that up-to-date content is provided in every issue. This is in addition to the International columnists sharing their boating knowledge and experience. Expect more from YT in the coming issues. .

www.yachtingtimes.asia

YT December edition.indd 7

Unfortunately Tarun there are not many really good water-front properties in India offering the range of marine activities you see available abroad. Though there are many water-font hotels and resorts they have very little or no water activities. This is a shame. But we hear many hotels like Radisson, Taj and other hotels have big plans to include this.

Doom and Gloom seems to be the buzz words at the moment. When major economies in the west are at the verge of recession, the Indian boating market seems to be riding the storm very well.

So what makes the Indian market resilient to this downturn? Indian Marine veteran Captain Mathew Cherian says that the growth of the dollar millionaires in India along with the spread of boating awareness is the key. According to Captain Mathew his company Nautilus Yachts has seen a 46% growth in Sales in the Eastern EuropeMiddle East-Asia region and the forecast is strong for 2009. Many Indian’s have expanded their shopping list to include boats and yachts rather than sticking to just cars and real estate. The ambition to be one up on what the neighbour has is also a driving factor, in addition to an urge to enjoy the natural marine beauty of India.

autilus may have the reputation of building very high quality boats which you can drive as fast as you like and have years of trouble free use. But what makes them standout from the rest of the pack is the international design tailored to suit Indian conditions. This is an extremely important factor as the other boats and yachts are too ‘’soft’’ for India, a fact that has been proven by the number of imported boats lying useless at yacht clubs and waterfront properties across India. The Nautilus brand is present in many markets around the world but their focus on India shows their commitment to expanding the boating market here. Lack INDIA

of commitment to our market by foreign manufacturers and inexperienced boat dealers have been responsible for the leisure boating industry growing at a slow pace and in many cases damaging customer confidence. Thanks to manufacturers like Nautilus Yachts the boat buyer can be confident of getting an International product made to Indian specifications with the added benefit of direct access through their regional office in India. The 2009 Model Year Boats were launched in Dubai with additional standard features and some design revisions. This is in addition to the all new 28 foot

yacht called the N28 GT which is a premium version with all the bells and whistles with a design sure to turn heads. Nautilus is in the process of getting ready a yacht in the 44-50 foot size with a flybridge. This model is expected to be ready soon and will cater to the needs of higher end customers who wants the extra space and the use of a flybridge. Details of the model are kept under wraps and more information will be known later closer to the launch dates. YT had covered the Nautilus N25 in a previous issue and readers wrote in asking for reviews on their smaller boat models. So in this issue we cover the highly capable and stylish N16 , N19 www.yachtingtimes.asia

and N20 sports boats. All these 3 models are their new generation designs with the difference being in the length of the boat. As the name suggests N 16 is the 16 feet boat followed by the N19 at 19 feet and the N 20 at 20 feet. Right from the smallest model which is the N 16 the list of features, styling and solid build quality will impress any boat buyer. The ‘Step Vee’ design of the hull is a result of years of research in hydrodynamics to ensure maximum efficiency in the form of safety, speed, fuel consumption, stability and durability of the boat. All the three models are in a bowrider www.yachtingtimes.asia

layout which is a big plus for going out on the water with a few of your friends as it offers ample space and an excellent view of the water. Berthing is often a big problem in India as the lack of it can make boat storage a pain. This will not be a problem with these models as all of them are certified trailerable and so can be ‘’dry berthed’’. This means the boats can be easily put on a trailer and parked next to your house or even in a garage. Like any investment care must be taken to ensure that your boat is in the best of health for years to come. But

with the bullet proof build of the Nautilus models and a warranty that gives you total peace of mind this would be one boat you will be sailing for a very long time. The basic price of Nautilus range starts at Rs 5.5 Lacs (exfactory). n

GREEN DRIVE

Nautilus has the unique distinction of pioneering eco-friendly boats in the

marine industry. They are working closely with manufacturers from USA and Europe for an electric drive outboard engine. This new generation environmentally friendly engines is zero emission and offers exceptionally low running costs. Expected as an option in the 2011 model year Nautilus sports boat range. This would sure get a lot of attention when it is launched at Ft. Lauderdale, Florida and lead a way for other boat manufacturers to be inspired by this. Mike’s column expert opinion

YACHT AND BOAT CHARTER BUSINESS IN INDIA Mike Derrett, Expert Columnist

Y

crew makes for savings in many ways, from training cost, and most importantly consistency and ease of interaction for the yacht owner. In general, crew prefers to be busy and enjoy the opportunity to exercise their skills and see new places. Charter affords this opportunity.

acht Chartering is a thriving business through out the world with yachts of all sizes and styles available for Charter (or rent) right from a couple of hours to weeks. India with its vast coastline and beautiful destinations to visit on the coastal belt has been slow to bring in the Charter business in a big way. Though recent years have seen an influx of Yachts into India there are very few companys offering this service. With such a big potential of high returns its only a matter of time we will see many company’s springing up in Mumbai, Cochin, Chennai etc. What can you do with your yacht or boat when its not being used by you? The answer is simple. Charter it. This brings us to the question of Why would a Yacht or boat owner want to make their prized possessions available for Charter? What are the benefits gained for an owner, weighed against limiting his Yacht’s availability to him during certain periods of the year? Its easy to say that the most obvious benefits is financial, but these are not only confined to charter fee income.

14

YT December edition.indd 14

When charters are on board the normal running expenses, such as berth (if in a marina) and fuel fees, maintanence charges etc are covered by the charter fees generated. For larger Yachts it gains a reputation as a successful charter vessel which adds a capital premium to the value of the yacht that can help to protect the owner’s investment. Although it could be perceived that a busy charter yacht migh require considerably more maintenance than a private yacht, this is not necessarly

INDIA

the case. Using all the engineering and equipment on a regular basis ensures smooth running and is far better than this equipment being left for long periods without use-which only invites the potential for a breakdown to occur just when the owner comes on board for his well earned break.

Once the decision has been taken to bring a yacht to the charter market, either the owner can float a company to look into the charter or it can be registered with a reputed Charter firm. Yacht manufacturers like Nautilus Yachts prepare charter ready yacht and boats on request so it is advisable to put across your needs at the time of purchase. If the owner plans to start a chartering business on his own it can be a good business proposition. Moreover revenues from charter can be used to upgrade and add more yachts and boats to your portfolio. n

Another important aspect to consider is with so much of marine activity getting good crew with experience of operating a luxury yacht may not come by easily. Retaining good quality

NEED FOR SPEED Yamaha F250 Outboard Motor By Donny, Editor-at-Large

Y

amaha was established in 1887 as a piano and reed organ manufacturer by Torakusu Yamaha. Now a 100 years later this multinational corporation has a wide range of products and services of which many are market leaders in their segment. This Japanese behemoth stays ahead of its rivals due to its constant innovation and of course the millions of dollars spend on research and development. Their experience in racing has its effects rub off on its motorcycle business as well as the marine engine business which make these motors both powerful and versatile. Their engines are so good that even Volvo sourced a V8 motor from Yamaha for its XC 90 SUV. So could we expect the same innovation in the marine sector too? The answer is a big yes. The Outboard Engine market is highly competitive with manufacturers trying to remain a step ahead of each

18

YT December edition.indd 18

other with improvements in technology which actually work. The old “New and Improved” marketing tag would work for your sunblock lotion but not for a boat enthusiast who is shopping for an outboard motor. So in 2008 Yamaha lauched its new F250 Outboard Motor a powerful, versatile and reliable 6 cylinder OBM. Offshore, inshore, saltwater or freshwater-today’s larger boats demand the extra oomph and this is exactly what the F250 delivers. This V6 is both compact and lightweight weighing in at around 277 KGS and pumping a water ripping power of 250 HP. The power is produced from its 3.3 liter, DOHC 24 valve engine at 5500 rpm. The variable camshaft timing dramatically increases low-mid range torgue and the multi point fuel injection adds to the mid-range throttle capabilities. Yamaha has ensured that the engine is highly reliable and durable to the harsh marine

INDIA

environment and also to an extend withstand the lack of care from the users. It features an upgraded corrosion resistance package treated on the inside as well as the outside of the powerhead. This ‘electro-deposited’ process helps ensure longer engine life and reduced downtime. All this coupled to the Yamaha Command Link Control and Gauges makes this highly suitable for people who like to live life on the edge and has a serious need for speed syndrome. With an excellent sales and service network in India, customers are rest assured that help is just a phone call away. WINDS OF CHANGE

Changes to Class 1 for 2009 he World Professional Powerboating Association (WPPA) has announced technical rule changes for the Class 1 World Powerboat Championship which will be brought into effect on January 1, 2009. The new rules focus on reducing costs, improving the level of competition among the teams, and broadening the entry of boats into the championship. These changes announced were with complete support of the team owners who see this as a way to increasing participation in the sport. The key changes include: Introduction of a new engine-boat package. This means the craft must be 11.5M to 13M in and length, weighing 4100KG and running 790hp naturally aspirated engines. This spec means that Australian Superboat and

American Supercat-type boats can compete in Class1 Appointment of a sole propeller manufacturer for the championship. The first option voted for is for Five axis propellers with teams limited to a maximum of three sets for the season. Removal of all electronic devices The introduction and implementation of any new equipment not currently used in Class 1 must be approved by WPPA. Any future changes in rules will be drawn up by a technical committee which will be appointed by the WPPA. The technical committee will be composed of members independent of the Class 1 teams. In the future, the driver’s representatives will also assist the World Professional Powerboat Association with the approval of race courses. n

ESSENTIAL GUIDE TO THE VOLVO OCEAN RACE O

n 8th September 1973, 17 race yachts embarked on an adventure that can be now considered as “The Everest” of yachting.Organized by the Royal Naval Sailing Association the “Whitebread Round the World Race” was inaugurated marking the first of this legendary endurance race testing both man and boat. Its 2008 and the longest, most demanding sporting contest has left Alicante, Spain. Rebranded as the Volvo Ocean Race, 2008-09 race is in its tenth edition. As the name suggests the swedish brand has a very close affinity with the race. A lot has changed from the first race in 1973 to the one today as technology, training and professionalism has made it highly competitive. The craft used

20

YT December edition.indd 20

for the race has evolved into the Volvo Open 70’s series which is a highly tuned thoroughbred boats designed to endure the harsh seas. During the nine months of the 2008-09 VOR,which set sail from Alicante,Spain on 4th October 2008,the teams will sail over 37,000 nautical miles of the world’s most treacherous seas via Cape Town, Kochi, Singapore, Qingdao around Cape Horn to Rio de Janeiro, Boston, Galway, Goteborg and Stockholm before concluding in St.Petersburg, Russia, during later June 2009. Each of the eight entries has a team of 11 professional crew who will fulfill their sailing roles in addition to two sailors that have had medical training, as well as a sailmaker, an engineer and a media INDIA

specialist. During the race no fresh food will be available on board and they will live off freeze dried fare. They’ll also face sleep deprivation and temprature variations from -5 to +40 degrees Celcius, with only one change of clothes. Circumnavigation of the World is a challenge in itself, but the Volvo Ocean Race crews will have the added pressure of racing the other teams and they will have to keep a very close eye on the scoreboard. The event uses a high scoring system ie in the eight boat competition, eight points will be awarded to the winner of each leg, with the overall winner being the team with the most points at the end of the race. Along the route are seven ‘’gates’’ or waypoints that the fleet must pass through with half points awarded for the boats in order.

DECEMBER 2008 - JANUARY 2009

As the majority of the action happens offshore, now it also includes a ‘in-port’ racing bringing the spectators up close with the race at six of the eleven stopover ports. The same system of “half-points” will be applicable in the “in-port races”, so bonus points will account for 20 percent of points on offer. This year also sees the introduction of the ‘stealth mode’ that each team has the option to use once on each leg. When the ‘stealth mode’ is activated, no positional data from the boat is broadcast, allowing the crew to go one up on their rivals. So fly or sail into Kochi (Cochin) and enjoy the hospitality of this Southern India state and be a part of this historic race. n

ERICSSON 3

The rebadged ABN Amro One being the winner of the last Volvo Ocean Race comes with a proven track record. This boat has been much modified but the late entry into the race may effect the prepration and training. The Irish skipper Ger O'Rourke will be expecting an all out effort from his team mates.

This boat utilises the the Abn Amro One's winning hull from the last race which adds to its creditials. The shared development programme with their sister entry,Ericsson Race Team 4 is sure yield dividends. Ocean racing veteran Magnus Olson has contributed in a big way to get this team into shape and a force to be reckoned with.

Unlike Ericsson 3 this team is far more experienced, fast, driven and a favourite among fans. Torbe's team is well drilled and expect them to push the Juan Koujoumdjian-designed boat to its limits.

A late entry into the race this Chinese and Irish backed team could pull a few surprises on the way. British Olympian Ian Walker has the pleasure of sailing into two homeports-Galway and Qingdao. Working on a tighter budget than the rest of the teams means that all the talent of the crew is needed to compensate for the lack of preparation time.

TEAM RUSSIA

The glamourous hollywood star Salma Hayek launched this team but it is the team's aura of confidence that has to be watched out for by their rivals. They will be gunning for podium positions on every leg and could be the front-runner this year. Baring any mishaps this boat and its crew will pounce on any opportunity to grab the top spot.

Though captained by Andreas Hanakamp this boat also has Oleg Zherebstov, the Russian businessman and team sponsor on the boat. The striking Rob Humphreys design is appropriatly named Kosatka(Killer Whale) but have to wait and see if they can match the grit of the rivals. But expect surprises on the way.

This largely Spanish team has already made a mark by securing points at the start of the race. But the race is still at an early stage and there is a long way to go. They would be looking at taking on the other rivals in the open ocean as team effort can turn the tides in the ocean. Expect the black boat to mount a strong challenge

Skipper Bouwe Bekking is determined to banish the blues he suffered in the last running of the Volvo Ocean Race. The previous boat Movistar had sunk but he will not miss on the opportunity to make amends and from results early on in the race the intentions are clear. Underestimating this team based on their previous record could be a folly as they are not to be taken lightly.

MARINE STEREO SHOPPING GUIDE Zac Kuncheria Marattukalam How do I choose the Marine Stereo that suits me? So, you’re prepping your sports boat (or Luxury yacht) for the holiday season and it hits you: great-sounding tunes will turn your fun up a lot. You know that a regular car system won’t survive the open water, so what to do? Consider the many marine-specific stereos from brands like Kenwood, Sony, Clarion, JL Audio, Wet Sounds, Polk Audio and others. How is the Marine Audio gear different from a regular Car Audio System? Unlike car audio components — which live in the watertight interior of your vehicle — marine equipment has to be able to stand up to the elements. The water, salt and sun that make cruising around the waves so much fun can also wreak havoc on your electrical components. If your gear isn’t designed to withstand this sort of abuse, it won’t last a season. Water resistance — this means the components can handle splashes and light rain, but are not built to handle submersion. Levels of resistance vary by manufacturer. UV resistance — designed to withstand sun damage. Found on receiver faceplates, speaker cones and remotes. Anti-corrosion protection — specifically designed to resist rust and the corrosive effects of salt water. Examples of anti-corrosive features include coated circuit boards, plated connections, and a rust-resistant chassis. What should I consider when stereo shopping for my boat? Materials that will stand up to the elements — at sea, survival is job one, so make sure that all of the electronics on your boat are protected against salt, sun, and water. If you need an extra measure of protection (or want to use a non-marine-specific component on your boat), install a universal cover. It will flip down to shield your receiver from the outside world, and then flip up so you can get to the controls. A waterproof, wired remote control is an excellent alternative to exposing your receiver to the elements — you can mount the radio inside a watertight compartment and not worry about shorting out your tunes. Good specs — better specs mean better sound quality, on land or at sea. For receivers, look for a high CD signal-to-noise ratio, a wide frequency response, and plenty of RMS power (power output). If radio’s your thing, check the FM sensitivity spec — the lower, the better. High power — since you’ll be listening to your music out in the open (as opposed to within the acoustic confines of a car), high power is a must for clean, clear sound. Most receivers come with built-in 4-way amplifiers, but if you love it loud or just want to drown out the nautical background noise, you might want to consider adding an external marine amp to your system. “The System” — the days of the basic, one-trick CD player is long gone. From satellite radio controls to connections for your iPod, today’s aftermarket components offer of a wide variety of A/V entertainment options. If you have a larger system in mind, get a receiver with an auxiliary input, allowing you to add another audio source later. Multiple sets of preamp outputs make it easier to connect and control external amplifiers and subwoofers. And if your cruising will take you out into the wild blue, consider the entertainment value of satellite radio. How are you going to install it? Given the various power and space limitations, each installation presents a unique set of challenges. If you’re replacing an existing radio, you can probably use the existing mounting location and wiring. Otherwise, you might need to cut some panelling or run wires for the components. Most marine stereos are a standard single-DIN size, and connect to a 12-volt marine battery. Grounding a stereo can be a challenge in a boat. Boats from reputed builders have specific grounding plates that can be used. Consult your builder for more information on where to ground components in your boat. There are a wide variety of durable, high-quality marine stereos on the market today like a couple of names which have been mentioned in the beginning of this article. In fact, just about any A/V configuration you can imagine in your car can now be tweaked to work on your boat/yacht. With that flexibility in mind, there are many things to take into account when shopping for a marine audio system, so be sure to study each product carefully before deciding which is the best one for you. If you have any queries or require any kind of help regarding audio and marine audio installations, E-mail me at zacmaratt@gmail.com or buzz me at 0 96112 91919

MACHO GERMAN First Look at the Mercedes Benz GLK By Bill Copeland, Editor-at-Large

ntil a few years back the soft roader segment was dominated by the likes of Toyota and Honda and later by the Korean brothers (read Hyundai and Kia). The big boys from Germany continued with their full blown SUVs but missed on the opportunity to attract a bigger customer base. Increasing fuel costs and change in global customer preferences induced luxury car makers to offer a model in this high volume segment. BMW launched the X3 but the odd “shoe” shape was not to everyones liking. Now the Bavarian luxury behemoth has been joined by their close rival Mercedes Benz with the new GLK and the Audi Q5 which was covered in the previous issue of YT. So what sets the Mercedes GLK apart from the rest? For starters its based on the new C class platform which is very capable and has become a benchmark in its segment. This sure adds a lot of credentials to the GLK right from the word GO. The Middle East launch of the GLK was held in Dubai and yours truly was invited to get a first impression to see if the GLK will take

www.yachtingtimes.asia

YT December edition.indd 23

the automotive world by storm and how this model is important to the Indian market. The exterior styling of the GLK may not be to everyones liking, especially the fairer sex. This car oozes a very macho image with its squarish profile reminiscent of the legendary Mercedes Benz G Wagon. The design stands out compared to the “ugly duckling” profile of the BMW X3 and the too cute profile of the Audi Q5. But again this is a design theme which grows on you and will look fresh even after a few years. Stepping inside the cabin gives you the impression of “I have seen this before”.You will be forgiven for this as the interiors have components from the new C class. The new generation of Mercs are of very good quality and everything is put in place as it should be. But the GLK fascia lacks the up-market elegance of the C class. I guess Mercedes tried too hard to make you feel like being in the G wagon-which is not really a beauty queen. The seats are well tailored and comfortable to be in for long drives. The interior space is well

used and there is ample leg, shoulder and headroom for all occupants. The SUV ensures that there is a high boot opening available to lunge around your whole wardrobe. According to company sources the GLK is very capable off-road as it is on-road but I doubt if any of its potential customers will fully use its capability and rather stick to the tarmac.

Dubai 2 petrol engine variants are on offer. The GLK 280 and the 350 diesel variants launched in Europe, not making its way to the oil rich Gulf. For the Indian market I feel Mercedes could offer the 280 CDI seen on the E Class or the 220 CDI in order to keep the pricing to a modest figure of around RS 37-40 Lacs. n

LACOSTE – FRANÇAIS COUTURE By Jean-Pierre Moreau

T

he French luxury brand Lacoste is one of the most recognizable names in the Fashion world thanks to the legendary ‘Crocodile’ logo. This could be the reason for Lacoste being one of the most counterfeited brands in the World. Established in 1933 by Rene Lacoste and now headquartered in Paris with the main production from Troyes, Lacoste Boutiques can be found in cities world wide. In addition to their production facility in France it is also manufactured in 12 countries across the World under extremly strict quality control methods. For decades the brand has been viewed more for its sporting presence but the involvement of French designer Christophe Lemaire has taken it more upscale. With the arrival of Lemaire, Lacoste has once again returned to its elite status it once held before the management crisis it faced in 1990. The Lacoste connection with sports still continue in a strong way with American Tennis star Andy Roddick and French player Richard Gasquet both endorsing the brands. Lacoste licenses its trademark to a number of companys like Samsonite, Devanley, Pentland Brands and Procter & Gamble who own the exclusive right to produce fragrance under the Lacoste brand name. It should be noted that Crocodile is not a part of Lacoste and there had been a bitter battle between the two. The close similarity of the Crocodile brand logo with that of Lacoste had confused many shoppers in new and emerging markets.

In order to identify one from another – Crocodile uses a crocodile logo that faces left while Lacoste uses one that faces right. Walk into any Lacoste Boutique and you are sure to find an elegant outfit for anytime wear that coveys the message of being elegantly sporty and fashionable. A rare combination which very few brands can pull off. n

FEET TO SAIL Sperry Top-Sider

Fashion connoisseurs say “you should be dressed for the occasion” and the men at Sperry Top-Sider knows this best when it comes to footwear for the marine enthusiast. Inspired by the world’s waters, the carefully hand-sewn construction, water & stain resistant leather, rustproof hardware and the non marking wave-sided outsoles ensure that you are surefooted on board. Sperry Top-Sider has been an American favorite since 1935 when Paul Sperry, inspired by his dog Prince’s ability to run nimbly over ice and snow, used a pen knife to cut siping into the outsole of a rubber sneaker. This ingenuity, along with the iconic inspiration of other design details, launched an American Original which has since been a favourite with both men and women who are proficient with marine sports and activities. If you are looking for a sporty and comfortable shoes then the Sperry Top-Sider is a must have on your shoe rack. More info visit. www.sperrytopsider. com n
