Preface iii The New Oxford Picture Dictionary contextually illustrates over 2,400 words . The book is a unique language learning tool for students of English. It provides students with a glance at American lifestyle, as well as a compendium of useful vocabulary. The Dictionary is organized thematically, beginning with topics that are most u sefu l for the "survival" needs of students in an English speaking country. The to pics move on t? those of a more gene ral na ture, includ ing those that might be used in content area classes in schools in the United States. However, pages may be u sed at random, depending on the students' particular needs. The book need not be taught in order. The words depicted are those most usefu l for students needing basic English skills. The most common name of any given item was used for sim plicity. Any regionalisms or variations will be found in the Teachers Guide for that par ticular page.
The New Oxford Picture Dictionary contextualizes vocabulary whenever possible, thus making the language learner's task a bit easier. Verbs have been included on separate pages, but within a topic area where they are most likely to occur. However, this does not imply that these verbs only appear within these contexts. For obvious reasons, the number of words per page has been limited. In addition, attem pts h ave been made to place the numbers on the art consecutively, either from left to right, or, on many contextualized pages, in a circular, clockwise order. A complete index with pronunciation guide has been included in the Appendix. For further ideas on using The New Oxford Picture Dictionary, see the Teacher s Guide and the two workbooks: Beginners and Intermediate levels. Also available in the program are a complete set of Cassettes, offering a reading of all of the words in the Dictionary; Voca bulary Playing Cards, featuring 40 words and the corresponding pictures on 80 cards with id eas for many games; and sets of Wall Charts, available in one complete package, or in three smaller packages.

Index 105
'.
Two numbers occur after words in the index: the fi rst refers to the page where the word is illu strated and the second to the item number of the word on that page. For example, above r0 he",] 102 2 means that the word above is tbe item numbered 2 on page 102. If o nly a bold number appears, then tha t wo rd is part of the unit
title or a subtitle. The index incl udes a pronunciation g uide for all the word s illustrated in the book. Th is guide uses sym bo ls co mmonly found in dict ionaries fo r native speakers. These symbols, unlike those used in transcription sys tems such as the International Phonetic Alphabet, tend to preserve spelling and so sho uld help you to become more aware of the connections between written English and spo ken English. All pron unc iation symbols used are alphabetical except for the schwa r~] , which is the most freque nt vowel sound in Engl ish. If you use it appropriately in unstressed sy llables, your pro nu nciation will so und more naturaL You should note that an umlaut (["]) calls attention to the special q uality of vowels before [r I. (The sound [li] can also represent a vowel not followed by [r) as in claw.) Ynu sho uld listen carefully to native speakers to discover how these vowels actua lly sound. Stre s s
This guide also follows the system for marking stress used in many dictio narie s for native speakers. ( I) Stress is not marked if a word consisting of a single syllable occurs in isolation. (2) Where stres s is marked, two levels are di stinguished : a bold acc ent [ , ] is placed afte r eacb syllable with primary stress, a light accent [ I J is placed after each syllable with secondary stres s.
Sylla ble Boundaries Syllable bou ndaries are indicated by a single space.
NOTE: The pron unciation used in this index is based on patterns of American Eng lish. There has been no attempt to repre sent all of the varieties of American Eng lish. Students should listen to nati ve speakers to hear how the language actually sounds in a pa rticu lar region.
