Arkema’s business manager for fluorochemical business in Australia, Kylie Farrelley, is the new chair of Refrigerants Australia.

Refrigerants Australia appoints new chair THE LOCAL MANAGER OF ARKEMA'S FLUOROCHEMICAL BUSINESS, KYLIE FARRELLEY, HAS BEEN APPOINTED THE NEW CHAIR FOR REFRIGERANTS AUSTRALIA (RA).

SHE WAS OFFICIALLY elected by the RA Board last month and has replaced Brett Fraser, who resigned to pursue a career outside of the industry. "I have big shoes to fill. Brett's experience, knowledge and insight into industry were highly developed and will be difficult to match," Farrelley said. Commenting on her priorities as the new chair, Farrelley said the industry is in a rapid state of change and RA is committed to ensuring the Australian HVACR industry is at the forefront of new refrigerants and technologies, and

making sure there is good policy and safeguards in place to encourage this transition. "RA has spent much of the last 10 years focused on advocating good policy outcomes for industry with regards to synthetic refrigerants, through the introduction and removal of the Carbon Levy and more recently amendments to the Ozone Protection and Synthetic Greenhouse Gas management Act as well as the HFC phasedown. "While a lot has happened in relation to synthetic refrigerants, it is important to remember that RA is technology neutral. Our members sell about 90 per cent of the ammonia and CO2 used as refrigerants in Australia and much of the hydrocarbons used in original equipment manufacture." Now that industry has a clear direction on the HFC phasedown, Farrelley said RA is able to refocus on issues relating to the introduction of new low GWP refrigerants including natural refrigerants, by continuing to engage government and other authorities on issues relating to safety, training and licensing. "Communicating these efforts to broader industry will also be a priority," she said. "Of all the activities that RA has engaged in over the last few years, I am particularly proud of the Future: Gas seminars which allowed RA to better inform industry about changes in refrigerant regulations, their properties and how they can be safely used. "I want to support more activities like this while I am chair of RA." The position of chair is held for a two-year period when the Board can either elect a new chair or re-elect the incumbent.

Search is on for Australia's best fridgie THIS YEAR FOR the very first time, CCN’s HVACR Leadership Awards will include the Fridgie of the Year Award thanks to the generous support of Totaline. The company's national technical manager for refrigeration and product solutions, Gaj Bhalerao, said today's fridgie toils hard – come rain, heat or harsh, remote location – they have an important job. "Engineers get recognised, so do project managers and facility managers, so why not the humble fridgie? We need to acknowledge the value of their work," Bhalerao said. "It isn't often we hear about how a fridgie on site saved hundreds of tonnes of food, or how a fridgie saved a business from going bust.

8

CLIMATECONTROLNEWS.COM.AU

"This award is a first step toward recognising their hard work and appreciating their efforts. They are out there making it happen, and are often on call at all hours of the day." It takes focus to be a fridgie following blueprints and specifications to install units, and this usually means working extended hours to fix breakdowns. "A fridgie of today has a lot more access to technology and information and Totaline is hoping that by sponsoring a Fridgie of the Year Award it will give the job greater recognition." Bhalerao said Totaline is supporting this initiative with top brands like Aicool-Airef, Danfoss, Embraco, Emerson, Frascold, Parker-Sporlan, Testo and ZoomLock and many more. "Our goal is to provide a one-stop shop solution to the Australian fridgie," he said. ✺

Net zero the new target for commercial developments THE CLEAN ENERGY Finance Corporation (CEFC) and Lendlease are targeting a new standard of sustainability in large-scale commercial precincts, focusing on the delivery of net zero emissions from a $4.5 billion commercial property portfolio as early as 2025. Commercial developments in the new Melbourne Quarter precinct, in the heart of the city's CBD, will be among the assets to benefit from the CEFC investment, which will help ensure pre-

cinct developments within the portfolio follow best practice energy efficiency programs. The CEFC is committing up to $100 million in equity to the Australian Prime Property Fund Commercial (APPF Commercial). The Fund is managed by Lendlease and invests in prime commercial properties across Australia. It was rated the world's most sustainable real estate fund in each of 2014, 2015 and 2017. CEFC CEO Ian Learmonth said the CEFC investment in APPF Commercial would help set a new benchmark and support an accelerated drive towards a net zero carbon property portfolio target by 2025. The CEFC investment is targeting abatement of more than 40,000 tonnes of carbon emissions over the expected lifetime of the assets in the portfolio. The net zero carbon goal is well ahead of the Australian Sustainable Built Environment Council recommendation that buildings achieve net zero carbon emissions by 2050 to meet international obligations. "Buildings account for nearly a quarter of

Australia's carbon emissions. Lendlease and other industry leaders recognise the need to move towards net zero carbon buildings and we're working together to identify ways in which that can be achieved as early as possible," Learmonth said. The Melbourne Quarter precinct, opposite Southern Cross Station in the commercial heart of Melbourne, will combine commercial, residential and cultural facilities. APPF Commercial is exploring the potential for innovative virtual network technologies, onsite power generation, heating solutions, battery storage and renewable energy technologies. Josh McHutchison, managing director at Lendlease Investment Management, said the first stage of the Melbourne Quarter precinct is on track to be completed in 2018. When completed, the precinct will include a third office tower and is expected to accommodate approximately 13,000 workers and 3,000 residents. APPF Commercial has 21 assets across NSW, Victoria, Queensland, ACT and South Australia.

Research App for Aussie technicians to lead world-first study REFRIGERANT RECLAIM AUSTRALIA (RRA) has launched a world-first App for local technicians to determine how much refrigerant is left in end-of-life air conditioning systems. The App, which makes it easy for technicians to enter information about the systems they are replacing or uninstalling, is available now. Australian technicians will be the first in the world to collect the data which will go into research to help limit the damaging effects refrigerant emissions have on the environment. The study was first announced at last year's CCN Live event with RRA CEO, Michael Bennett, pointing out that the research will finally establish how much refrigerant remains in the 10 million units currently installed in Australia. “These units are on top of another one million units purchased every year,” he said. “We just don't know how much reRRA CEO, frigerant there is at Michael Bennett

10

end of life for these consumer durables. “There is likely to be at least half a charge left in these systems, maybe more. But we need to know what the end of life period is and how much refrigerant is left in them so we can recover it.” Bennett checked in with organisations around the globe seeking to get this information. “Nobody had any idea so we are going to go ahead and find out for ourselves,” he said. As well as contributing to important research, users of the App will go into weekly draws to win a heap of great prizes including four $200 vouchers from JB Hi-Fi, Bunnings Warehouse, BCF and Caltex. There are also two grand prizes of $5000 to be won. “So not only can operators help lessen the damaging effect of refrigerant emission but they can also win great prizes in the process,” Bennett said. “The RRA app is easy to use and can be downloaded from the Apple App Store, or from the Google Store. “Alternatively, you can find it by searching for the Refrigerant Recovery Research App.” As a non-profit organisation, RRA has already destroyed more than 6,500 tonnes of refrigerant resulting in the preservation of more than 10 mil-

lion tonnes of stratospheric ozone, and the prevention of the emission of more than 10 million tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent. “RRA relies on the benevolence and goodwill of ambassadors to help conduct its research,” Bennett said. “Various studies have identified more than half the refrigerant installed in Australia is in split air-conditioning systems. “To collect this refrigerant at end-of-life and further reduce environmental harm, we need information. So download the App and help make refrigerant waste a thing of the past.” ✺

Adopting the standard will future-proof Australian buildings.

Australia adopts global building automation standard AUSTRALIA HAS ADOPTED A GLOBAL BUILDING AUTOMATION TECHNICAL SPECIFICATION THAT IS BEST KNOWN AS THE BACKBONE OF THE KNX STANDARD.

THE GLOBAL ISO/IEC14543-3 standard for building automation has been adopted as a technical specification for Australia and New Zealand. Adoption of this global standard locally validates ABB's strategy of developing intelligent building automation solutions based on the

global KNX standard, ensuring KNX badged products and systems are now tested and certified compliant for use in the emerging smart home and intelligent building control market in Australia. It will also benefit systems integrators, home and commercial building owners, facility managers and the people who work in the buildings sector. David Sullivan, electrification products manager for ABB in Australia, said buildings are one of the most significant sources of energy consumption. "Building system engineering supported by intelligent and networked room and whole-building controllers can contribute significantly to conservative and requirement-based energy use," he said.

"Utilising solutions that comply with the international specification will ensure interoperability of devices, regardless of the manufacturer, and future proof buildings. "In Australia, until now, the absence of a recognised standard for the building and home automation sector has allowed situations where various automation control philosophies can be present in a building, even in a single room. "The lack of a convergence across disciplines of a building's requirements to a common platform created an unavoidable duplication of resources and incurs additional costs to the integrator and building owner. In part, due to additional wiring and equipment requirements and the increased knowledge base necessary for different programming tools as well as programming software." Sullivan said intelligent building systems technology that is based on ABB i-bus KNX ensures the building remains up to date and profitable as it enables energy savings in the doublefigure percentage range. "The amortisation period is reduced and significant savings are created over the entire life cycle, planning stage and construction phase, and during selling, leasing and operation," he said. Globally the home automation market is expected to grow to more than $100 billion by 2022, according to industry analysts. In partnership with ABB, the first KNX certified training centre in Australia opened in 2012 at RMIT University, allowing electrical technicians and undergraduates to study the open-architecture building control system. The training facility is certified by the International KNX Association in Brussels.

Billion dollar commitment to engineering THE UNIVERSITY OF Melbourne has announced a $1 billion commitment to its Engineering School. A seven hectare engineering campus is set to open at Fisherman's Bend in Victoria in the early 2020s, giving students and researchers the opportunity to work alongside industry. The Melbourne School of Engineering 2025 (MSE2025) strategy will have a total price tag of close to $1 billion, to be spent on staff and infrastructure across at the Fisherman's Bend, Carlton and Parkville campuses. The new campus will be located at the site formerly occupied by General Motors Holden, which was purchased by the Victorian government in 2016, and has now been sold to the university.

14

CLIMATECONTROLNEWS.COM.AU

According to MSE2025 program director Dr Anne Hellstedt, a key focus of the strategy is connecting research with industry, government and the broader community to increase the impact and relevance of the university's engineering endeavours. The university is working with the Victorian state government to attract engineering industries to Fisherman's Bend to support opportunities for collaboration between academia and commerce. The Fisherman's Bend campus will incorporate research facilities including smart grid equipment, wind and water tunnels, autonomous vehicle testing and prefabricated housing materials. Fisherman's Bend is undergoing billions of dollars of urban redevelopment. The state gov-

ernment anticipates that in 2050 the precinct will be home to an additional 80,000 residents and local employees. ✺

Improving defrost safety

HOT GAS DEFROST is a very common and efficient method of defrosting used within industrial refrigeration, though it does pose a significant safety risk if the injection of hot gas into the evaporators is not carefully controlled. To minimise this risk, Danfoss has engineered a solution that safely controls hot gas injection: The ICSH Dual Position Solenoid Valve. Complying with the latest IIAR safety recom-

mendations for soft gas applications, the ICSH Dual Position Solenoid Valve provides a gradual, time controlled opening for a smooth pressure build-up in the evaporator before it opens the flow to 100 per cent for full defrost. This two-step approach prevents hydraulic shocks, thereby improving the overall safety of the refrigeration system. Unless the soft opening in step one has been activated, the default ICSH configuration ensures that the full opening in step two does not occur. The ICSH Dual Position Solenoid Valve opens the flow thorough the main valve in two steps via two EVM-NC solenoid valve pilots. The time delay between the two steps can be controlled either by a PLC, a controller, or a timer. Once the EVM-NC for step one is energised, the main valve will open for approximately 20 per cent of the main valve full capacity. After a pre-defined delay, the EVM-NC for step two will be energised and open fully equivalent to 100 per cent of the main valve full capacity. The ICSH Dual Position Solenoid Valve is based on the ICV platform and shares the same function module as the ICS and the ICV housing. The top cover is also compatible with ICF 50 and ICF 65. Legal points to consider when using hydrocarbons Insurance policies do vary, and it is important to be familiar with the exact policy terms – which may include an obligation along the lines of complying with "industry best practice". In the HVACR context, an insurer may well argue that compliance with AS 5149 is in fact industry best practice.

2. DOES INCREASED HYDROCARBON FLAMMABILITY MEAN INCREASED LEGAL RISK?

CLEARSCOPE LEGAL FOUNDER, RAPHAEL BROWN, EXPLAINS THE LEGAL IMPLICATIONS ASSOCIATED WITH USING ALTERNATIVE REFRIGERANTS SUCH AS PROPANE-BASED HYDROCARBONS. WITH THE HFC phase-down commencing January 1, 2018, there has been a lot of discussions about the legal implications associated with using alternative refrigerants such as propanebased hydrocarbons. The reduced global warming potential (GWP) of these refrigerants is now well-established, but there is still a lot of clarification required to understand the associated legal and compliance risks. In this article we examine two important legal questions.

1. IS IT IMPORTANT TO COMPLY WITH THE MAXIMUM CHARGE WEIGHT PROVISIONS IN AUSTRALIAN STANDARD 5149? In other industries such as construction and road safety, Australian Standards have been explicitly incorporated into various Acts and Reg-

20

ulations. Compliance is therefore mandatory and not up for debate. However in the HVACR sector, AS 5149 (with its maximum charge weight provisions) has not been given the same legal force. Does this mean that there is less reason to comply with this standard? The answer is NO. Here are three very good reasons why readers should comply with AS 5149 even though it is not mandatory: Being able to defend a negligence claim. If an accident occurs, a HVACR operator could be liable for negligence if they fail to take "reasonable care". A lawyer for an injured party may successfully argue that non-compliance with AS 5149 indicates a failure to take reasonable care, even though AS 5149 is not a mandatory industry standard. Responding to a work health and safety investigation or prosecution. These investigations can result in fines in the millions of dollars, and even imprisonment. While obligations vary between states and territories, a common theme is the need to take "reasonable steps" to ensure a safe workplace. Making it company policy to comply with AS 5149 may greatly assist in demonstrating that reasonable steps were taken. Protecting your insurance cover. HVACR businesses and professionals working with hydrocarbon refrigerants should have insurance cover such as professional indemnity. If something goes wrong, HVACR businesses and professionals will want to know they are covered.

The short answer is: It depends. If a hydrocarbon-based HVACR system catches fire, various questions should be asked: • How intense was the ignition source? • Would ignition have occurred if the system was based on other less flammable refrigerants? • Were other flammable substances present – such as oil, which is mixed with virtually all types of refrigerant? • Did other secondary, flammable materials play a part? Such as curtains and drapes in domestic settings, and flammable ducting and cladding in commercial environments? • Were there clearly displayed signs, warning of the presence of flammable refrigerant? (Seemingly an obvious step. But one that does get overlooked, which was tragically the case at the Hotel Rochester in Victoria in 2014, where two workers lost their lives and a full Coronial Inquest followed.) When hydrocarbon refrigerant is present, the answers to the above questions will be critical in determining exactly what caused or contributed to the fire and who is legally liable.

Three decades of change:

Evolution of the RAC trade CCN TAKES A FASCINATING LOOK AT THE INDUSTRY'S EVOLUTION OVER THE PAST 30 YEARS. FROM SYSTEM FAILURES, MISMATCHED REFRIGERANT BLENDS AND ROTTEN PINEAPPLES – THE RAC TRADE HAS SEEN IT ALL. IN THIS ARTICLE, INDUSTRY VETERAN AND INTERNATIONAL STANDARDS EXPERT KEVIN LEE, SHARES ENTERTAINING INSIGHTS INTO HOW THE INDUSTRY WAS FORCED TO CHANGE WHEN THE MONTREAL PROTOCOL WAS INTRODUCED IN 1987.

THE CFC PHASE-OUT played a pivotal role in the development of refrigeration and air conditioning technologies. This article looks at some of the biggest changes and the biggest challenges the industry has faced during this time. The CFC phase-out led to significant advances – some were technical while others led to changes in practice – creating a better industry, one that is more professional and has better engineered equipment. While the end result was favourable don't think for a minute that the transition was easy or painless. It wasn't. The changes in work practices were extensive and touched on many aspects of what a tradesperson was asked to do. CFCs were seen as valuable but also as something that could not be vented off without harm. CFCs could no

“THERE WERE HORROR STORIES OF SYSTEMS FAILING CATASTROPHICALLY AND WHEN THE COMPRESSORS WERE OPENED UP THEY HAD A BRIGHT GREEN JELLY-LIKE SUBSTANCE THAT SMELLED OF ROTTEN PINEAPPLES.” - KEVIN LEE.

longer be used instead of compressed air to blow the dust and lint out of condenser coils and the need to recover CFC refrigerant from systems during service and decommissioning was a necessary improvement. These practices led to a far more professional and environmentally responsible industry. Other changes were no less profound – the new refrigerants presented real problems for industry as they could not be simply used as dropins to replace CFCs. CFC refrigerants used mineral oils in the compressors, which were miscible (mixed readily) with the refrigerant so it could travel around the system and return to the compressor. Mineral oil was not miscible with HFC refrigerants and this presented problems in that all compressors pump a small amount of oil out with the refrigerant and around the system. As the oil was not miscible it did not remain mixed with the refrigerant

and tended to accumulate in various sections of the refrigeration circuit. The choice of lubricant to use with HFCs came down to either Polyol Ester (POE) or Polyalkylene Glycol (PAG). Both of these lubricants presented their own problems with the main one being they both readily absorbed water. The presence of water in a refrigeration system is a major reliability threat as the water can break down to form very damaging acids and result in the ultimate failure of the system. Vastly improved work practices were needed as systems could not be left open to the atmosphere as the oil would absorb moisture. Additionally, there was recognition that refrigerant leaks were a major problem and that regular refrigerant top ups were inappropriate. This issue stemmed from the original design and manufacture of the system components –

“IT WAS COMMON PRACTICE TO USE MECHANICAL JOINTS RATHER THAN SOLDERED JOINTS TO ATTACH VALVES AND REGULATORS WHICH MADE SERVICING EASY BUT CREATED A LOT OF POTENTIAL LEAKS.” - KEVIN LEE. The need to recover CFC refrigerant from systems during service and decommissioning was a necessary improvement.

such as condensing units and evaporators – and from field installation practices. It was common practice to use mechanical joints rather than soldered joints to attach such items as shut-off valves, regulators, filter dryers and TX valves. This, of course, made servicing easy but created many sources of potential leaks. Both better field practice and improved design helped address this problem. The phaseout of CFCs did present other issues to industry – over time there was an absolute plethora of blends available, over 50 at one point. It was basically left to the marketplace to determine which ones worked best for a particular application. Also, in the early days, some of the mixing of the blends themselves was not consistent and this led to low sysKevin Lee

tem performance and even failures. There were horror stories of systems failing catastrophically and when the compressors were opened up they had a bright green jelly-like substance that smelled of rotten pineapples. Some of the refrigerant blends used ethanol to help carry the oil around the system, if the system had moisture in it and acids formed then the ethanol could react with the acids to form esters and hence the rotten pineapple smell. The number and range of refrigerants led to another problem – refrigerant cylinders became a nightmare for tradesmen. They had their workshops and work trucks full of different cylinders – some they owned, others they rented and others were owned by the refrigerant wholesalers. To add to this challenge, they also needed to carry reclaim cylinders. To get the cylinder nightmare under control, the major wholesalers and refrigerant distributors put in place cylinder-tracking systems, decanting at wholesale branches was discontinued in favour of centralised cylinder filling plants that also checked cylinder pressure test date, cleanliness and

leak tightness of the filling valve. Once these centralised systems were well established thousands of potentially leaking cylinders were removed from the market. I firmly believe that this change and the advent of reclaim cylinders led to a vast improvement in the overall quality of refrigerant and reduced a huge source of leaks. Both equipment and work practices today are amazingly advanced from what they were 30 years ago. Our industry isn't just moe advanced, equipment is better designed and we have better trained tradespeople using better practices than we did in the 1980s and before. While we certainly can all identify with the upgrades the industry should pursue, we shouldn't forget the catalyst that made it all happen – the Montreal Protocol. Today's industry is successfully managing the environmental impacts of refrigerants and reducing the energy use of our equipment. From this starting point it will be interesting to see what the next evolution of the trade looks like in the year 2050. ✺

Share the magic HERE WE ARE – BACK, BACK, BACK AGAIN AT ARBS 2018. IT is time to share all the magic that makes this the premier three-day event for Australia's HVACR industry. ARBS is an opportunity to get re-acquainted with a few old faces and connect Sandra Van Dijk – Editor with some new ones. It's a bit like returning from the school holidays. Remember those high school days when holidays came to an end? First day back at school and we are surrounded by so many familiar faces, sights and sounds. For an event with over 350 exhibitors and almost 8,000 attendees it's amazing how ARBS still manages to capture that wonderful feeling of familiarity that usually accompanies much smaller conferences. But HVACR is an industry with plenty of long-standing professionals that have been around for a while. They are committed to this industry and its future. There really is no single reason to attend ARBS. It's just not that kind of event. ARBS participants are there for a multitude of reasons.

34

CLIMATECONTROLNEWS.COM.AU

Of course, the main attraction is the exhibition floor. ARBS has always been a great preview of things to come. It's the launch pad for the latest product releases and an opportunity to talk to the experts first-hand. It's the meeting ground that brings customers and suppliers together. The Speaker Series is a great forum to keep everyone informed, but the real magic that sets this event apart from the rest is the networking opportunities. This is most evident on the plane trip home. On the flight to ARBS I never see a single attendee travelling to the exhibition. But on the flight home the plane is packed with new faces and friends I met during ARBS – it happens every time. It also proves that connections are what matters most. So please take time to connect with CCN at Stand 4056 and have a magical ARBS experience.

Welcome message from ARBS chair, Ian Hopkins

ARBS chair, Ian Hopkins.

ARBS 2018, THE PREMIER HVAC, REFRIGERATION AND BUILDING SERVICE EXHIBITION IN THE SOUTHERN HEMISPHERE, CELEBRATES ITS 20 YEAR ANNIVERSARY THIS YEAR. ARBS CHAIR, IAN HOPKINS, REFLECTS ON TWO DECADES OF GROWTH. THE exhibition returns to Sydney in 2018 and we are very excited to see how the new International Convention Centre delivers both visually and practically. ARBS celebrates its 20th year in 2018 which lends me to reflect on the past decades and how our industry has changed. From improvements in safety standards to the introduction of new and smart technologies, our industry has progressed with a continuous commitment to transform our built environment and is driven to be solution focused given the demands of the time. And as these demands and external pressures see our industry change, evolve and consequently adapt, many of our business decisions are made with innovation and sustainability in the forefront of our minds therefore it remains imperative to be well-informed. ARBS 2018 provides the industry with a great opportunity to connect and network with leaders, peers, colleagues and suppliers while discovering the latest products, systems and service evolutions in our industry. The highly-acclaimed seminar program, now known as the Speaker Series, will provide an excellent opportunity to garner information and knowledge.

Visitors and exhibitors alike can learn about emerging technologies, methodologies, standards and best practice. I am confident it will continue to be a successful platform for the exchange of technical knowledge, information and ideas. The awards program once again is attracting strong interest, and this year is now easier than ever to enter with templates provided. Receiving an award is considered a pinnacle of achievement in the industry and well worth the effort involved. The awards recognise excellence in Australian industry across a range of areas including Young Achiever, Product Excellence, Project Excellence, Industry Education and Training, Outstanding Service and Maintenance Provider, and the new category for 2018 Software/Digital Excellence. We have no doubt ARBS 2018 will continue its growth trend with anticipation of a strong f low of visitors from around Australia and overseas. I am personally looking forward to what I am sure will be a bumper exhibition and a wonderful supporting program. I look forward to seeing you during the three-day event.

Future of the built environment THE FUTURE OF THE BUILT ENVIRONMENT WILL BE ON SHOW AT THIS YEAR’S ARBS EXHIBITION IN SYDNEY. LEFT: International Convention Centre, Darling Harbour. BOTTOM: Inside the Convention Centre theatre.

AUSTRALIA’S only international air conditioning, refrigeration and building services trade exhibition is set to showcase hundreds of new products and technologies with a focus on innovative responses to existing and emerging trends. Back in Sydney for the first time since 2010, the new International Convention Centre (ICC) in Darling Harbour will host ARBS from May 8-10, 2018. With more than 350 exhibitors and in excess of 9,000 visitors, the exhibition will be the largest ARBS to date and will offer industry unrivalled access to the latest in HVACR in the southern hemisphere. A case study highlighting the unique features of the ICC’s central energy plant will be the first in a fantastic schedule of presentations. The session will explore challenges faced throughout the project and key lessons learnt and be delivered by the

36

CLIMATECONTROLNEWS.COM.AU

lead consulting engineers and contractors behind the $1.5 billion redevelopment. Presenters, Shane Durkin, engineering services manager at AG Coombs, Michael Dagher, technical director – Buildings, AECOM and Nathan Scroope, building technologies & solutions, Johnson Controls, will provide details on performance levels achieved in the last 12 months and reflect on whether the project has met expectations. The ICC project, which commenced in 2013 and took over 5.8 million hours to complete, officially opened in December 2016. A public-private partnership between the NSW government and a consortium of private companies, the ICC is constructed on the site of the old Sydney Exhibition Centre. The venue delivers 40 per cent more exhibition space than its predecessor and is the biggest combined exhibition, convention and entertainment precinct in Australia. And given ARBS 2018 is held within this very impressive building it naturally lends itself to be a topic of conversation. In addition to the presentation, there are tours of Sydney ICC’s central energy plant also available to delegates. Collaborate with peers over the latest technologies, standards and best practice, and enjoy many of the social activities including the awards presentation dinner. Delegates can see how industry leaders design, control and innovate to sustainably and efficiently transform the built environment.

Haier: Global Brand Innovating for Australian Market Haier, the number one brand of major appliances in the world1, was founded in China in 1984, and launched in the Australian market in 2015. Awarded the number one brand in the world for nine consecutive years by Euromonitor International, Haier operates in over 30 countries with design and manufacturing in Asia, Europe, The Americas and Australasia employing over 100,000 people. The global brand has built an international reputation for listening to customers’ needs and using these insights to design smart, everyday home appliances – using extensive customer research to develop products that are designed with Australian lifestyles in mind. With five Research & Development Centres, Haier’s goal is to build an open innovation ecosystem in which global resources and users participate and continuously produce appliances that are market and technology led. This has enabled the brand to launch a connected Air Conditioning range, with Haier

also recognised as the number one brand of connected Air Conditioners in the world2. Haier Air Conditioning Sales Manager Tony Bartlett says that brand has worked to design and manufacture Air Conditioners suited to modern Australian homes and the climate – with Air Conditioners undergoing rigorous heat testing ranging from -25 to 60 degrees Celsius to mimic Australia’s harsh environmental conditions. “Given the scale of the Haier brand and the level of research and advanced innovation the brand is able to commit to, we have been able to expand and improve on product lines across both our consumer and commercial range. This year alone we are launching over 260 new products in the brand’s commercial range that will work to complete our trade offering in the Australian market – effectively allowing us to increase our potential market and complete the ranging of our commercial product. ”An example of product innovation for the

Australian market is the new R32 Air Conditioners range from Haier launching in August. Knowing energy efficiency is important to Australians, Haier developed the eco-friendly R32 range that works to drastically cut greenhouse gases by up to 70% compared to products with R410A refrigerant. Haier will be exhibiting its new products, including the R32 range, at the Air Conditioning, Refrigeration and Building Services Exhibition (ARBS), held at the International Convention Centre Sydney on the 8 to 10 May 2018. “We are continuing our launch in to Australia with products that are developed and tested for this market and backed by our 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, outstanding customer service and support offering. I encourage any ARBS attendees to come and visit our stand (ARBS Stand 3184) to explore new products and find out why close to one in three people choose Haier air conditioners for their homes,” concluded Mr Bartlett.

AUTO MOSSA Late in 2016 Auto Mossa started manufacturing its new generation doors. R&D and innovation has been central to the company’s success with large projects completed in Australia and New Zealand. The Auto Mossa high performance doors are designed for three main sectors of industry: Cold Storage, Food and Beverage, and Distribution and Logistics. The HyperFreeze insulated door has excellent performance for freezer applications, as they have the highest level of insulation for this door type on the market. This has been achieved with airstrips that separate the curtain when

rolled and avoid compression of the insulation material. For Chiller applications Auto Mossa designed the HyperChill. This is unique in the sector as it has insulation in addition to the curtain material and like the HyperFreeze, airstrips are used to maintain thermal efficiency throughout the life of the door. For low thermal requirements, Auto Mossa developed the HyperGlide. Here the airstrip curtain separation allows for higher speeds, greater wind-load performance and quieter operation. The company’s products prove that Auto Mossa is responsive to customer needs.

With AxiBlade, ebm-papst has launched an innovative fan system that sets a new benchmark in air conditioning and refrigeration technology. The components – the impeller, motor, housing and control electronics – were harmonised with each other down to the smallest details. Thanks to their modular concept, AxiBlade axial fans operate with an optimum efficiency of up to 54 per cent. The new fans also feature a noise reduction of up to 8 dB(A) compared to the standard product range For the first time in Australasia, ebm-papst is presenting a singleinlet EC blower with RadiCal impeller in a scroll housing. The blower is designed for use in residential ventilation units with and without heat recovery. RadiCal, a backward-curved centrifugal fan, achieves significantly higher efficiency in comparison to forward-curved centrifugal blowers. At the same time, it reduces the noise level as a result of its optimised scroll contour. When a FlowGrid air-inlet grill is added to the intake side, noise reduction can be optimised further.

HAIER AIR CONDITIONING STAND 3184 Haier, the number one brand of major appliances in the world*, was founded in China in 1984, and launched in the Australian market in 2015. Awarded the number one brand in the world for nine consecutive years by Euromonitor International, Haier operates in over 30 countries with design and manufacturing in Asia, Europe, The Americas and Australasia employing over 100,000 people. The global brand has built an international reputation for listening to customers' needs and using these insights to design smart, everyday home appliances – using extensive customer research to develop products that are designed with Australian lifestyles in mind. With five Research and Development Centres, Haier's goal is to build an open innovation ecosystem in which global resources and users participate and continuously produce appliances that are market and technology led. This has enabled the brand to launch a connected air conditioning range, with Haier also recognised as the number one brand of connected air conditioners in the world**. Haier air conditioning sales manager, Tony Bartlett, says that the brand has worked to design and manufacture air conditioners suited to modern Australian homes and the climate – with air conditioners undergoing rigorous heat testing ranging from -25 to 60°C to mimic Australia's harsh environmental conditions. "Given the scale of the Haier brand and the level of research and advanced innovation the brand is able to commit to, we have been able to expand and improve on product lines across both our consumer and commercial range. This year alone we are launching over 260 new products in the brand's commercial range that will work to complete our trade offering in the Australian market – effectively allowing us to increase our potential market and complete the ranging of our commercial product." An example of product innovation for the Australian market is the new R32 air conditioner range from Haier launching in August. Knowing energy efficiency is important to Australians, Haier developed the eco-friendly R32 range that works to drastically cut greenhouse gases by up to 70 per cent compared to products with R410A refrigerant. Haier will be exhibiting its new products, including the R32 range, at ARBS 2018. "We are continuing our launch in to Australia with products that are developed and tested for this market and backed by our 24 hours a day, seven days a week, outstanding customer service and support offering," Bartlett said. "I encourage any ARBS attendees to come and visit our stand to explore new products and find out why close to one in three people choose Haier air conditioners for their homes." HARBOUR CITY AIR PTY LTD STAND 1017 Forget About Outdoor Units – this is innovation at its best. A new range of innovative HVAC systems has arrived in Australia. No ugly outdoor units are required just plug and play. Available in both wall mounted and ducted system, these are highly efficient inverter systems. The advantages are clearly apparent. No outdoor unit means no expensive pipework installation, no penetrations and no associated electrical wiring. All units come with commercial two years warranty which can be extended on request. The wall mounted Innova 2.0 unit simply hangs on a wall bracket and requires two 160mm core holes. It is very much like hanging a clothes dryer. Innova 2.0 is manufactured in Italy and can be controlled by a smartphone. Slim line and very attractive, these inverter systems are MEPS approved and are highly suited to Heritage buildings and walk up Strata etc. The accessory Atomiser means no need for a condensate drain, amazing low energy technology. The ducted Polaris unit is a 10.5kW inverter. Condenser air is simply discharged via two penetrations through an outside wall. Condenser air can be ducted up to six meters, meaning whisper quite air discharge. The MEPS approved ducted system can be simply suspended from a ceiling and comes complete with wired controller. No messy installation, just connect appropriate ductwork. This concept will save significant time during installation.

JDPOWER STAND 2167/2192 Every tradesman has his favourite tool. It could be the tool that is most often used or the easiest to use, or the tool that saves so much time and labour, maybe it's the tool that just feels good to use. One of the most favourite tools for air conditioning installers is the JDPower CM340/CM520 Air Conditioner lifter. These lifters are hands-down favourites because the installer knows how much back ache, sweat and tears he and his mate are about to be saved when installing an air conditioner. Those of us who struggled up ladders in the 80s and 90s installing air conditioners only wish we had them back then. "I've had mine for 10 years," said Graham, "wish I had it 10 years earlier." Here's a tool that fits easily into the boot of a car, is carried in one hand, takes 30seconds to set up, allows one man to do the job of two or three men – in quicker time no less, saves the risk of lifting injury and saves time and money. Why wouldn't the CM340 be a favourite tool? Why wouldn't you have a CM340 in your tool kit? Emma Liou Roberts, director of JDPower Tools, says "every week, especially following the supply of a new lifter, we speak to a convert who realises that lifters do save time and money and create a more efficient and professional installation team". There are three popular lifters in the JDPower Range, CM340, CM520 and CA400 lifting up to 150kgs to up to 5.0 meters. Many refrigeration supply companies stock and display them, some even hire them. Ask your favourite supplier for more information or contact JDPower Tools. JDPower Tools (lifters and trolleys) will be on show at ARBS 2018 or call 02 4228 7708. To find out more, email info@jdpowertools.com.au or visit www.jdpowertools.com.au.

OZMIST STAND 3292 OZmist will be exhibiting on stand 3292 showcasing our unique Australian high pressure pre cooling solutions. All OZmist pre cooling solutions are designed and manufactured in North East Victoria and have dealers Australia-wide to assist in advice and installation to suit your pre cooling requirements. By using a high pressure pump module with inline water conditioner, the OZmist pre cooling systems atomise normal mains pressure water into ultra fine droplets that flash evaporate around the condenser coils, providing instant ambient air temperature drops to assist in under performing units in extreme weather resulting in lower head pressures and amperage draw. The OZmist pre cooling solutions require minimal power and water usage compared to traditional methods, and with the incorporation of our carefree water conditioners into every pump module scaling of the condenser coils is prevented.

GREEN LEASING AND THE LAW Climate change, investment pressure and individual tenant demands have resulted in many challenges for HVAC and built environment contractors. These challenges raise a host of questions with legal ramifications. Are the standard installation contracts still fit for purpose when you are no longer installing a standard system? Do standard maintenance contracts expose you to liability if you must maintain a "smart" system in a "smart building"? And how can your performance be measured if the environments are as unique as the people who rely on them? To achieve the best for their customers, HVAC professionals also need to understand their tenants' contexts, including leasing arrangements. This session will also explore green leasing and how it can be used to achieve net zero. Strategies will be provided for removing leasing barriers to net zero and demonstrating a lease's commitment to sustainability and collaboration using the BBP Leasing Standard. Presenters for this session are Melissa Kirby, lawyer and strategist at Sharpe and Abel and Claire Hashman, Dexus legal counsel.

PRE COOL TO REDUCE PEAK ENERGY CONSUMPTION By using a high pressure pump module with inline water conditioner, the OZmist pre cooling systems atomize normal mains pressure water into ultra ne droplets that ash evaporate around the condenser coils, providing instant ambient air temperature drops to assist in under performing units in extreme weather resulting in lower head pressures and amperage draw. The OZmist pre cooling solutions require minimal power and water usage compared to traditional methods, and with the incorporation of our carefree water conditioners into every pump module scaling of the condenser coils is prevented.

A GAME CHANGER FOR THE BUILDING SERVICES INDUSTRY BUILDING excellence should not stop when a building is handed over. Unless properly addressed, operational issues can degrade a building and its services, and the original design intent can be lost. This can manifest itself in higher energy usage, a failure to maintain comfort conditions and less satisfied occupants. Implementing a 'Soft Landings' strategy ensures the transition from construction to occupation is 'bump-free' and that a building's operational performance is optimised. Originating in the UK, the Soft Landings concept has been adopted in Australia, with Green Star allocating it 'Innovation Challenge' status. A case study involving a 30,000m2 office development in the ACT will be critiqued during this session outlining valuable lessons learnt and some surprising outcomes. Authors of the Australia and New Zealand Soft Landings Framework will also provide an update on the principles of Soft Landings, including how it can be a 'game changer'. The session commences at 10.30am and will be presented by WT Consultancy's national manager for sustainability, Steve Hennessy, and Cromwell Property Group director, Phil Cowling.
