01 More Than Word-Retail Bookstore RISD 2016 Fall Risd Academic Studio Retail Bookstore Renovation Instructor: Jeffrey Katz Site: More Than Word, Boston More Than Words is a nonprofit social enterprise that empowers youth who are in the foster care system, court involved, homeless, or out of school to take charge of their lives by taking charge of a business. It began as an online bookselling training program for youth in DCF custody in 2004. The warehouse is so much more than storage space. It is the core of our entire book business and processes. They take pride in the business processes they have innovated—the process—not the product—is the heart of what we do here. As the “heart” of the business, the warehouse is our book in-flow and out-flow—(what a library would call “circulation”). In this space, they will integrate all aspects of our book businesses: sorting, scanning, packaging, shipping, loading, staging, and storage processes. They want people to see how lively this space could be; that it’s an active staging area, not just storage. The storefront is glazing and people walking by can see into an active community space inside—for author events, and other typical bookstore activities. There are places for people to sit and have a cup of coffee and grab a book and the view from the outside suggests it would be a delightful place to sit and grab a book and cup of joe.

Retail Bookstore Cafeteria
Mezzanine Online Inventory
The cafeteria was designed in the center of the book store which can attract the pedestrian to enter into the multi-function bookstore. The big cafe bar can be served the sandwich, salad, coffee.etc. The guest can sit at the bar reading the book and enjoy their food at the same time. The sofas beside the cafe bar were designed for the people who might meet their friends or enjoy the reading. There is a two-story catwalk around the cafe bar on three sides.
The Mezzanine was designed for the online inventory and the youth development which around the cafe bar. These spaces are private so only the staffs can go up to the mezzanine. The bookshelves separate the cafe bar and the mezzanine and the staffs can sit on the stairs reading or having a rest. But there are no doors to separate the entrance of the mezzanine with the cafeteria, so I used the different kinds of the carpets to imply the guest the boundary of the cafeteria. The stairs of the mezzanine were designed to two parts, one is the big size which connects with the bookshelves for staffs sitting or reading as well as to store some books, one is the regular size for staff to go up to the mezzanine.
The bookshelves were designed as the transparent walls to separate the cafe and the online inventory spaces. The guest can take the book from the bookshelves as well as they can also see the staffs working on the other side through the bookshelves. The staffs work on the other side as well as they could pass through the door of the bookshelves to the second level of the catwalk. So they can see the interesting bar story from the catwalk and the guest who sitting on the sofa could watch the staffs working at the higher level.
People walking in the street can see what is happening inside of the bookstore. They could see the guest reading in the cafeteria and the staffs working in the mezzanine, two different scenarios happen in the one image.
Material Schemes
Material: Carpet and wood In the whole design of this bookstore, I widely used the bookshelves to separate the spaces, and at the same time, I used the different kinds of the carpet to divided the different functions. The first one is the striped carpet which is put around the bookshelves, so this area is for the guest to take the books and the direction of the stripe can guide the guest to walk around the bookshelves. For the main part, I used the dark gray carpet which really matches the wood bookshelves and wood bar. The darkest carpet is put in the boundary of the mezzanine and cafeteria which can imply the guests that area is the private space.
02 Rapid Assessment Unit RISD 2015 Spring RISD Academic Studio- Emergency Department Renovation Instructor: Peter Yeadon Site: NYU Langone Medical Center,New York
The emergency department is a crucial part of the hospital. It is often the most crowded section in the entire hospital. Add the fact that patients entering the ER are bringing a plethora of unknown pathogens, it is vital to keep emergency rooms clean and safe. Reducing cross-contamination between patients and staff is of utmost importance before patients are sent to other parts of the hospital. As a team of designers, we are responsible for the identifying opportunities for improvement. From materials and future projections, we looked closely at several components and how they contribute to a more efficient Emergency Room. Preventing Infection is a two-sided battle. Contaminated inanimate surfaces are direct routes to patients and are easily prevented by smarter protocols. As waiting times increase, opportunities for exposure also increase. Increasing patient turnover represents a two-fold benefit: more patients’ treated and less exposure from individual patients. Smarter protocols surrounding shared devices reduce opportunities for exposure. Systems such as the Rapid Assessment Unit and Trauma Room Turnover reduce the amount of time a patient waits, directly reducing opportunities for exposure. Emergency department across the nation are constantly faced with increasing and unpredictable patient volumes. Long waits in the ED create a range of problems such as patient dissatisfaction because of placement in the hallway, no privacy, and increasing infections.

No matter the patients’ health situation, they will all be treated in the ER. So the patients are crowded in the exam rooms. People who are only from the special passageway for the ambulance can go directly to the trauma and others should all wait in the waiting room and the exam rooms.

New floor plan: I moved the imaging room to the center so that three different kinds of patients are all near it as well as the ambulance entrance. Making a one-direction workflow and patient flow space to create a constant stream of patient flow that keeps space available to incoming patients.
PATIENT
I would like to split the patient flow according to the patients’ flow so I add the RAPID ASSESSMENT UNIT into the emergency department to release the patients where were in the exam room and waiting room before. Patients will have more comfortable experience in the ER.

RAU Floor Plan There are 13 small units in this RAPID ASSESSMENT UNIT which replace 8 stretchers increasing more spaces for the patients. One nurse station is near the door which helps nurses to move the patients.

Supply Air Diffuser
Clean air comes from two supply air diffusers, they come down and go through the unit and take away the pathogens from the patients. Then the air gets warm and gets out from the return air diffuser which is on the top of the patients.
Supply Air Diffuser
The curved wall helps to slow down the force of the airflow so that decreases the bacterias on the wall. And it is easier to clean than the curtain.

I consider about the patients’ privacy and also let the nurse watch the patients. So I design the curved wall to the two parts, one is opaque and another is glass. According to the human’s the average height and people’s sitting height, I set the opaque wall 4.5’. So that when the patients sit down they cannot see each other and when the nurse stand up, they can know patients’ situation.

Nurse station was designed in the center of the RAU so the nurses can look after the whole patients and it also close to the entrance of the main emergency department so if the patients got worse, they can be delivered to the trauma directly. The curved semi-walls protect the patients' privacy and give the patients the good experience.

05 Construction Drawing of Residence
2016 LYCS Architecture residential project Instructor: LYCS Architecture Site: 4 Jalan Asuhan, Singapore Group Work
In 2015 I took one year off from RISD and I got the offer from the LYCS Architecture. I worked as an intern for around 8 months in the LYCS and this residential project in Singapore was my first case in my previous firm. Our team finished the almost 500 drawings in three months. Before I came to the firm I had never touched these kinds of construction drawings but after three months, I knew how to do the elevations, plans, sections and details drawings. I am so glad my manager trust me and let me in charge the rest of the drawing issues. Because our clients changed their ideas a lot and bunch of problems happened under construction.

06 GYM Customized Design 2015 Comerical real project Site: Sitong Factory, Yixing, South of China Building Area: 3237sf, 1 Floor Client: Fitness Instructor Individual Work
GYM CUSTOMIZING
Power training space(PTS) is a customized GYM space for people doing the private exercising. In 2015, there were two fitness instructors asking me to help them design their first GYM studio. They are pretty young as the same age as me so definitely they don’t have a lot of money to create the luxury style GYM. According to their situation, I had to try my best to do the least things and create the best result for them.
The original space was the factory warehouse which constructed by the columns, high ceiling, and one main entrance. So I was trying to create the mezzanine to make the space more architectural and creat more rooms for the GYM. My client told me they didn’t want to build the walls to separate the space because the original space was not very big so they thought the walls would make the space more crowed and I really agreed with them.
Original Floor Plan
Space Distribution 1ST: LOCKER 2ND: OFFICE
The left diagram is original floor plan which is the regular rectangle space. So I separate it into three parts, locker, and officers, exercise and reception. The bottom diagram, the gray part is the exercise area, the gradient color can imply the guest the different levels of training, so even there is no wall to separate the wall, people can still know the space well. But my client said if we used the different color materials that would cost more money about the floor. Finally, we don't use that idea because of the budget but I still like this design.

Mezzanine
The original space is the factory warehouse so there is no separating wall inside and my clients didn't want to spend extra money to create the walls in the exercise space. So I used the mesh wire to separate the interior space. So that people can look through the whole space as well as the mesh wires separate the function and it also can be used as the equipment shelves.
Gradient Floor 1ST: LOCKER 2ND: OFFICE
According to the intensity of training, I arranged these heavy exercise types of equipment and also use the different colors to distinguish these areas. The top part of the plan is a two-story structure, the first level is the locker and the second is the offices.
1 Floor Plan
This 48-piece foam gym floor mat set is a perfect solution for basement and garage floors. The waterproof puzzle-piece mats feature an easy locking system and a lightweight design. Made of high-density foam. Many people want to lose weight at the GYM. But most of them they are not confident to show their body shape when they are exercising. According to my client, they don’t want to build a small room in the exercise space for those people. So I want to use cold light to creat the relatively private atmosphere in some place.

GYM Finished Pictures I am so excited that my clients sent me the GYM finished pictures. Even they changed a lot of details but I still so satisfied with the current situation and I am so glad that they can be finished the gym within their budget. The left picture is my clients. They still use my color schemes which keep the gym space looking energetic. Actually, I also drew the construction drawings for the gym space and I went to the site for a lot of times. We met a lot of problems at that time especially the money so I have to use the concrete finished wall to save the money even in the locker, the walls, the ceiling, and the floor are all concrete. And we still use the original lighting system so we do not need to pay for that part. Now we finally finished this project and they run this gym well, good ending.

07 Typography In 3D Spaces 2016 Wintersession signage design for interior space Instructor: Ernesto Aparicio Site: RISD Campus CIT Building Individual Work There are five different departments in this CIT building, industrial design, graphic design, textile, digital media and interior architecture. According to the map, the CIT building is so far away from the main RISD campus and it is located in the crowded downtown. And at the same time, there is no obvious signage to recognize which building it is. According to the existing pictures, there is also no clear wayfinding system in the interior space. So for the guest, it is very hard to find the space they want to go.

There are 5 different departments in this CIT building. I was trying to classify them to two directions according to their dimension, the graphic design was 2D and the interior architecture was 3D. So I was wondering how can I use 2D graphic shape to describe the 3D so that I can use one way to describe two things. In this CIT building, there was no very significant signage system inside so when people came in the building, it was so confusing to figure out where to go. So I thought may be I could use the big number to show guests directly which floor they should go. For numbers, it is 2D, so at first, I drew the structural lines inside and I also added the shadows to create the volume for the numbers, so the original 2d number can be looked as the volume structure which also expresses my ideal concept, transfering 2d to 3d. Each floor has different colors, like interior architecture department, there are two floors for it, so the same color means these two are the same department.

The big number signage on the wall and the elevator are very marked information to tell people which floor it is as well as the good image for the wall painting. The room names and the arrows on the wall guide people to find where they want to go. And the same color of this two floors means these two are the same department. People will wait for the elevator in front of this big wall, so the big number signage will make a little bit fun for our students. I wish these signage numbers can be the made logo for RISD students to regarded as the CIT building.
The number is a very important element in this design. So I designed the number systems in this building and painted them on the wall, elevators, columns, and windows. Because I want these signages can be seen, touched and felt around by people. To touch the design and make the design more close to people are my goals.
08 Hand modeling 2013 Interior Design and Modeling Instructor: Ying Zhou Team Work
When I was a Junior student, I selected a elective course named interior design andmodeling. Our group (four people) all like the southern of chinese traditional architecture style. We focus on the traditional elements and also combine with the contemporary architecture. Circle is a chinese character. It means not only the circle shape in China but also the successful and reunion. It has a great significance in the Chinese mind. When you enter in the building from the round arch, you can not see the whole view of it.There is a wall on the front of you.But you can see sonthing from the lattice window. If you can’t wait to seeing the beautifull garden, you should walk along the stone path.
