It’s been a pretty mild winter, but I’m still ready for spring. It’s time to get outside & away from my desk for a bit — either that, or I’ll have to clean it up. And I do intend to get better organized this SARA BRISTOL year, but maybe not quite yet... some of my family’s favorite activities are coming up in the next couple months. The Winter Carnival up at White Pass (see page 14) is a nice farewell to winter. We’re not skiers, but my kids get a kick out of the huge snow castle that volunteers build next to the lodge each year, just for this event. It can get pretty crowded, but there are free tubes available for sliding down the castle’s chute. It’s a fun Like Us: facebook.com/yakimabusybee.com excuse to get a little more value out Friend Me: facebook.com/yakima.mama of those almost-new snowboots before my kids outgrow them. Then, before you know it, the Yakima Area Arboretum will be welcoming spring with its annual Arbor Festival (see page 15). While learning about nature is at the heart of this one-day event, you could just as easily call it a children’s festival. It’s one of the Yakima area’s largest kid-centric annual events — you don’t want to miss it. Of course, we also have Spring Break coming up — there are a few sports camps listed on pages 9-11 — along with Easter egg hunts, the Yakima Kids’ Fish-In, baseball season and lots more fun stuff. When you’re out and about, remember to take your camera and snap a few shots of your kids — and send them to me at the email listed below. I try to publish as many of your photos in each issue as I can. (Please send the original .jpg files, not a link to your web gallery.) For the next few issues, I’ll be gathering photos from your trips to Disneyland, Silverwood and other theme parks, as well as hiking, camping, sports, trips to the beach and other summer activities. Oh my — I was just looking forward to spring and now I’m already talking about summer ... See how time flies? Have a great spring!

■ ready for school Stop germs from spreading at school A school or daycare setting is a ripe environment for exposing kids to germs. One of the best ways to avoid spreading disease or getting sick is to keep hands clean. Teaching your child when they should wash their hands and the correct way to wash them is an important lesson early in life. When to wash: • Before, during and after preparing food • Before eating • After using the toilet • After blowing the nose, coughing or sneezing • After touching garbage • After touching animals or animal waste
HEALTH
Buzz It’s time to sign up for preschool Martin Backer, MD is a pediatrician at Pacific Crest Family Medicine in Yakima. He is accepting new patients.
Simply running hands under water doesn’t get the job done. There is a proper way to wash. • Wet hands with clean, running water and apply soap • Rub hands together to create a lather and scrub well between fingers, the backs of hands and under nails • Rub for at least 20 seconds (or by humming the song “Happy Birthday” twice) • Rinse well and dry with a clean towel or air dry If your child doesn’t have access to soap and water, an alcohol based hand sanitizer can be substituted. But it must contain at least 60 percent alcohol in the active ingredients. Use enough to wet hands and rub them together until they are dry. Remember that sanitizers don’t eliminate all types of germs and they don’t work well if hands are really grimy or dirty. Having clean hands is one of the best ways to keep kids healthy, well and thriving. 6
When my oldest child was 2, I’d heard stories about places where you had to enroll children in preschool months if not years in advance, maybe even in utero. These were far away, pretentious, perhaps even mythical places. Surely this wasn’t true, I thought, in a Central Washington city such as Yakima. And I was right — kind of. In our neck of the woods, there’s no sense to enrolling your child in school before he’s old enough to walk, talk and use the toilet. However, it did catch me by surprise that preschool and kindergarten registration takes place a good six months before classes actually begin. Some schools begin hosting open house events in January. However, if you’re just starting to think about school now, you’re not too late. Many schools won’t fill up until fall. However, the more popular choices will fill eventually, so you may not want to mess around: Ask friends for recommendations, and check to see if the schools you’re interested in are hosting an open house. If not, ask to schedule a tour. There are lots of options for preschools and kindergartens, both public and
private. Low-income families may qualify for free preschool programs through EPIC’s Head Start (509-248-3950) or your local school district. If your child has special needs, call the school district to see what resources are available to help prepare for success in kindergarten. If one or both parents would like to be heavily involved in the classroom, consider a co-op, or cooperative preschool. Generally a less-expensive option, coops rely on a steady stream of parent volunteers to provide snacks and work with students in the classroom. Yakima has two parent cooperatives, Central Lutheran Preschool (509-575-6490) and West Valley’s Learning Together Preschool (509-966-0733). There’s also a co-op in Toppenish (509-865-8179). Consider whether you want religious education to be a part of your child’s curriculum, or other specific activities, such as gymnastics. Of course, working parents may need a program that offers before- or after-school childcare. Larger childcare centers will likely offer preschool curriculum as part of their routine program. Make a magnet board Preschoolers love to play with magnets, but having little pieces underfoot in the kitchen while Mom’s making dinner is no fun. A custom-made magnet board for your hallway or playroom can help clear clutter (and kids) from the fridge door. Here’s the how-to: Ask a metal fabricator to cut a sheet of 24-gauge metallic steel (not stainless, which isn’t magnetic) to the size you desire. Our board measures 20”x24”. Let the fabricator know if you plan to paint the board, which you’ll first need to prime with a metal primer. Otherwise, ask for galvanized steel, which won’t rust. The fabricator should buff (technically, “deburr”) the metal’s sharp edges, but you’ll still want to cover them with tape or trim.
YAKIMABUSYBEE.COM • MARCH | APRIL 2012
For an old-fashioned school days look, we used a miter saw to cut a frame from yard sticks (about $1 each at the hardware store). Decorative molding, available in many styles, would also work great. Use a strong adhesive, such as Gorilla Glue or mirror mastic, to attach your trim to the metal; allow adhesive to dry. Drill holes in the board’s corners and mount firmly to the wall with screws so children can’t pull it off. Because, you know, they would. — Sara Bristol Cost: About $25 for a 20”x24” sheet of steel. Find it in Yakima at M&M Fabricators, 509-248-8890, or ASAP Metal Fabricators ($40 minimum), 509453-9143.

hand me down, ellensburg photos by bonnie davidson
N G I S i me s N O C he t of t Raising kids is expensive, and in today’s tough economy, lots of mamas are looking for new ways to be thrifty. Have you tried consigning? Like garage sales or thrift stores, consignment and resale shops are a great option for shoppers looking for a bargain. Especially when looking for infant gear and clothes — those adorable little outfits that get worn once before they’re too small — it’s pretty easy to find “gently used” items at a small fraction of their retail cost.
12
And, as your little one moves into new sizes, you can turn outgrown items back into cash or store credit — without the hassle of a do-it-yourself garage sale. Here’s a rundown on some local options: Resale shops, such as the newly opened Time After Time Resale Shop at 58th and Summitview in Yakima, purchase gently used items and give you back cash or store credit. Time After Time carries clothing from infants to adults, both men and women, as well as children’s gear and toys. The amount paid depends on the item’s brand (store brands are accepted, but name brands will net you more) and the amount of wear. All items must be clean and free of tears or stains. Consignment shops will take your items, price them and display them for sale for a certain amount of time, typically about 6-8 weeks. If the item sells, you receive a percentage of the selling price, often about 40-50 percent. There are several
consignment shops in the area specializing in children’s and maternity items: In Yakima, Sprout Again is in the parking lot across from Fred Meyer; Selah’s Baby Corral is on First Street across from 7-Eleven; and Ellensburg’s Hand Me Down is at 400 S. Main St. A consignment event works similar to a consignment shop but typically takes place for a weekend, kind of like a group rummage sale. At a consignment event, the consignors (people who are selling) typically set their own prices and receive a higher percentage of the final sale than those who consign in shops — because the event doesn’t carry the expenses associated with a storefront. Mommy Time is a twice-yearly children’s consignment event held at various locations around Yakima; for info on the next sale, visit mommytimesales.com. — Sara Bristol

and an assortment of reptiles and amphibians. Expect lots of hands-on learning opportunities for children of all ages and crafts for your budding artist. More than 600 families will receive a free tree to plant at their homes in honor of Arbor Day. Plan on spending two to four hours visiting the various stations and remember to wear sunscreen and bring bottled water. Food vendors will be on hand, and water, pop and snacks will be available for purchase in the Arboretum’s Gift Shop. Look for the roving cart selling Las Paletas gourmet popsicles. Yum! All proceeds benefit the Yakima Area Arboretum, ahtrees.org.

For an easy read, pick up a young adult novel People deal with stress in a variety of ways; some turn to exercise, while others shop, snack, or take long bubble baths. When I get stressed, I run for the nearest bookshelf and pick up something easy to read. Young adult novels usually don’t require much, intellectually or emotionally, but they can be hard to put down. Here are a few titles you might enjoy: Divergent by Veronica Roth In a dystopian future, the citizens of Chicago have separated into factions to stave off anarchy and ruin. Each faction’s members dedicate their lives to an ideology they believe will save the world (e.g. selflessness, honesty, knowledge, pacifism, or bravery). At sixteen, Beatrice Prior must decide which faction she will belong to for the rest of her life. Should she stay with her family and live a life of selfless service, or follow her heart and leave them forever? Trouble is brewing and her choice could mean the difference between life and death. Divergent has a cinematic intensity worthy of the big screen. I tore through all 487 pages in an afternoon when I was sick and supposed to be napping. Instead, I was tucked in bed, delightfully lost in a tale of intrigue, romance and breathtaking adventure. NOTE: With the exception of A Countess Below Stairs, these books may have violent or mildly sexual themes. Read them first and decide if
Incantation by Alice Hoffman During the Spanish inquisition, many of the Jewish faith reluctantly became Christian to avoid charges of heresy, imprisonment and even death. These conversos feigned Christianity, but practiced the old ways in secret even though discovery could bring devastating consequences. Sixteen-year-old Estrella de Madrigal is blissfully unaware that her family traditions are considered subversive until an act of jealousy threatens to tear her world apart. Incantation is a vivid and passionate portrayal of faith, friendship, betrayal and the terrors of the Spanish Inquisition. With a hint of mysticism, magic, and history, this haunting story wrapped itself around me, till I could think of little else. ••• The Forest of Hands and Teeth by Carrie Ryan Mary has lost so much to the Unconsecrated that live in the forest, pressing against the fence with their rotted flesh. The Sisterhood says their village is all that is left since The Return, until an Outsider comes to town using a long forbidden path and just as mysteriously disappears. When the undead breach the carefully guarded
village walls, Mary escapes down the path with a few others and tries to find safety in the depths of a deadly forest. At times gruesome and callous, The Forest of Hands and Teeth is about love, survival and sacrifice. It began slowly, rife with eerie tension, and then plunged without warning into a white-knuckled tale of suspense and emotion. My husband interrupted me during the last few chapters and almost didn’t survive. It was close. ••• A Countess Below Stairs by Eva Ibbotson Anna Grazinsky is a newly impoverished Russian countess determined to hide her noble lineage and earn a living as a maid for an aristocratic English family. Unfortunately, Anna’s highborn habits and lack of domestic dexterity are beginning to make the staff suspicious, and Rupert, the Earl of Westerholme, has started hanging around. If only he weren’t so handsome…or so engaged. A Countess Below Stairs had the teenage girl in me all aflutter. I was swept away by the phenomenal writing, quirky, vibrant characters, and wholesome romance. The fairytale feel and happily-ever-after ending made it the perfect escape from reality.
