Founded in 1920 by the artists Katherine S. Dreier, Marcel Duchamp, and Man Ray, the Société Anonyme, Inc., was America’s first “experimental museum” for modern art. To celebrate the organization’s 100th anniversary in 2020, the Gallery is sharing this excerpt from the 2006 exhibition catalogue "The Société Anonyme: Modernism for America." In it, former Gallery curator Jennifer R. Gross examines the rich correspondence between Dreier and Duchamp, which chronicles both Dreier’s prescient vision for the future of modernism in America and her and Duchamp’s goal of assembling and sharing, through exhibitions, publications, and programs, a collection that includes some of the 20th century’s most renowned artists—including Jean Arp, Max Ernst, Wassily Kandinsky, Piet Mondrian, Joseph Stella, and many more.
