In this brochure, which accompanies the exhibition “Reckoning with ‘The Incident’: John Wilson’s Studies for a Lynching Mural,” curators Pamela Franks and Elisabeth Hodermarsky, along with intern Beatrix Archer, discuss the circumstances surrounding the creation of “The Incident,” a powerful mural depicting a racial-terror lynching that was painted by African American artist John Wilson (1922–2015) while he was a student at La Esmeralda, Mexico’s national school of art. The brochure explores and illustrates the many preparatory sketches and painted studies that Wilson undertook in advance of the mural, which is no longer extant.
