“Wayne Shorter is not only one of jazz’s greatest composers, but its angel of esotericism, an enlightened and arcane elder.” – The New York Times On March 2, 2023, the jazz community and the global community of creatives suffered a great loss with the passing of saxophonist and composer Wayne Shorter. Considered to be one of the world’s greatest composers and one of the greatest jazz saxophonists of all time, Wayne Shorter was a recipient of 11 Grammy Awards, a Lifetime Achievement Grammy, five honorary doctorate degrees, the Kennedy Center Honor, Polar Music Prize, Lifetime Achievement Award from the Thelonious Monk Institute of Jazz, and many other awards and honors for his contributions to music. Shorter’s compositions have become jazz standards, and his music has earned worldwide recognition, critical praise, and various commendations. He has also received acclaim for his mastery of the soprano saxophone after switching his focus from the tenor in the late 1960s beginning an extended reign in 1970 as DownBeat’s annual poll-winner on that instrument, winning the critics’ poll for 10 consecutive years and the readers’ for 18. The New York Times described Shorter in 2008 as “probably jazz’s greatest living small-group composer and a contender for greatest living improviser.” “Wayne Shorter’s mastery of the saxophone, seminal compositions, and fearless commitment to originality and creativity have influenced generations of musicians on every instrument and across multiple genres of music. His professional accomplishments are a source of pride for the African American community, the Jazz Community, and the multifaceted community of creative minds globally. His examples of artistic and creative excellence have always been and will continue to serve as huge source of inspiration for me in my musical and creative endeavors.” — Wayne Escoffery (Lecturer in Jazz & Director of Jazz Ensembles)
