Charles Mingus (1922-1979) was one of the most important composers and advocates for social justice in Jazz. A prolific composer and bass virtuoso, he embraced the music of Duke Ellington, mastered the vocabulary of the BeBop era, and went on to contribute significantly to the modern Jazz idiom. He was a pioneer of third stream music and his music routinely made reference to the inequities and practices of racial injustice in America during his lifetime. It has been said that while many other musicians where writing tunes, Mingus was writing compositions. Wayne Escoffery, this year’s Yale Jazz Ensembles Music Director, is a 22-year veteran of the Mingus Big Band. He tours regularly with the ensemble, and is featured on several Mingus Big Band recordings, including the Grammy Awardwinning album Mingus Big Band, Live at Jazz Standard.
