The Middle East Libya

The Battle for the Arab Spring

The Rise and Fall of Qaddafi

Revolution, Counter-Revolution and the Making of a New Era

Alison Pargeter This riveting book documents the extraordinary reality of Muammar Qaddafi’s rise and 42-year reign. It also explores the tenacious popular uprising that finally defeated him and the possibilities for Libya as the future unfolds.

new

Alison Pargeter, an author with deep understanding of Libya’s history and people, explains what led up to Qaddafi’s bloodless coup in 1969 and how he proceeded to translate his highly personalised vision into political, economic and social policy. She discusses his tightknit networks, the crises he overcame – including sanctions after the Lockerbie bombing in 1988 – as well as his astounding manoeuvrings in the early 2000s to restore tattered relations with the West. Pargeter provides a thoroughly fascinating analysis of the 2011 revolt and uncovers the full details of Qaddafi’s downfall. She concludes by introducing the new power brokers in post-Qaddafi Libya as well as the variety of knotty challenges that now confront them. Alison Pargeter is an analyst and writer specialising in North Africa and the Middle East. She has held academic positions at the University of Cambridge and Kings College, London and is a senior associate at Menas Associates, an international research consultancy.

Lin Noueihed and Alex Warren The Arab Spring of 2011 unleashed a torrent of hope, change - and conflict. A year on, the excitement of new freedoms has given way to a complex picture ranging from gradual new democratisation to vicious repression, and a mounting frustration that, despite transformations in the political sphere, daily lives of most people in the region have yet to see an improvement. With the aid of first-hand reporting, Lin Noueihed and Alex Warren analyse the extraordinary repercussions of early 2011 and uncover the competing forces vying for dominance in the region. As tensions mount and the global economic situation worsens, Noueihed and Warren ask: where next for the Arab world? Lin Noueihed holds dual Lebanese/British nationality and has spent 10 years as a Reuters correspondent in the Middle East. Alex Warren is a director and co-founder of Frontier, a Middle East and North Africa consultancy. It should be read.’ – Robert Irwin, The Independent ‘[Gilbert’s] scholarship is meticulous, his tone balanced, and he takes care to include painstaking details.’ – Marina Benjamin, London Evening Standard ‘Gilbert explores the relationship between Jews and Muslims from the 7th century to the present day. In this book, historian Ilan Pappé examines how Israeli Palestinians have fared under Jewish rule and what their lives tell us about both Israel’s attitude towards minorities and Palestinians’ attitudes towards the Jewish state. Drawing upon significant archival and interview material, Pappé analyses the Israeli state’s policy towards its Palestinian citizens, finding discrimination in matters of housing, education and civil rights. Rigorously researched yet highly readable, The Forgotten Palestinians brings a new and much-needed perspective to the Israel-Palestine debate. ‘Ilan Pappé is Israel’s bravest, most principled, most incisive historian.’ – John Pilger ‘Pappé, in highly readable prose, give us details and perspective about the history of the Arab community in the state’s early years.’ – David B. Tackling one of the world’s most perplexing and divisive issues, renowned historian Benny Morris considers the legacy of the 1948 Arab-Israeli war, previous proposed solutions to the conflict between Palestinians and Israel, and the viability of various options for the future. His conclusions inspire hope for a just solution in a region where it is most sorely needed.

This inside look at Israel’s most momentous internal conflict shows why the settlements in the occupied territories were never an extension of mainstream Zionism but rather its opposite.

This arresting biography provides an intimate view of Dayan’s private life, his public career, and the political controversies of his time. Mordechai Bar-On, Dayan’s assistant during the Sinai War and an eminent historian of Israel, offers the most authoritative account yet of Dayan’s life, motives and world view.

This remarkable, page-turning book lays bare the painful division within Israeli society between Ashkenazi Jews, whose families come from Eastern Europe, and Sephardic or Mizrahi Jews, who come from the Arab countries of the Middle East.

This probing study of the veil’s recent return – from one of the world’s foremost authorities on Muslim women – reaches surprising conclusions about contemporary Islam’s place in the West today.

‘an acute study of how issues of political power and empire interact with women’s own claims to autonomy within families and communities. Ahmed beds her analysis into the wider political currents of Egypt without ever losing sight of women’s own interpretations of what they were doing and why.’ – Madeleine Bunting, The Guardian ‘A Quiet Revolution is an exceptional study of women in Islam. Their story is a remarkable one, and Leila Ahmed tells it with grace and understanding.’ – Joseph Preville, Time Out Leila Ahmed is the Victor S. Despite the intense media focus on Muslims and their religion during the agitated years following the tragedy of 9/11, few Western scholars or policy makers today have a clear idea of the distinctions between Islam and Islamism. In this important and book, Bassam Tibi, a senior new illuminating scholar of Islamic politics, provides a corrective to this dangerous gap in our understanding. He explores the true nature of contemporary Islamism and the essential ways in which it differs from the religious faith of Islam, founded in 610. Contemporary Islamism, or Islamic fundamentalism, is distinct from – although an outgrowth of – traditional Islam, Tibi asserts. Drawing on research in twenty different Islamic countries over the course of three decades, he describes Islamism as a political ideology based on a reinvented version of Islamic law. Bassam Tibi is the Koret Foundation Senior Fellow at Stanford University. He is also Professor Emeritus of International Relations, University of Göttingen, and former A.D. White Professor-at-Large, Cornell University. He is the author of three dozen previous books, including most recently Islam’s Predicaments with Modernity. Jihadists in South Asia

How the West Lost Its Way

Dilip Hiro

Tim Bird and Alex Marshall

This hard hitting and timely book explores the roots of militant Islam in South Asia and how it has grown to become a source of profound global alarm. Dilip Hiro tracks the growth of the jihadist movement from its first new violent activities in Afghanistan in 1980 to the present day, challenging previous understandings of the roles of the main players in the region – Afghanistan, Pakistan, the U.S., India and the Soviet Union – and warning that the Line of Control in Kashmir, where jihadists seek to incite war between Pakistan and India, is today the most dangerous border in the world. With evidence from a full range of sources including newly released Kremlin archives and classified U.S. Embassy documents published by WikiLeaks, the author compiles the first complete and accurate history of Islamist terrorism throughout South Asia. Compact, comprehensive and fast-paced, this book lays bare the causes of today’s escalating terrorist threat, corrects historical misunderstandings, and discusses fresh possibilities for breaking the hold of jihadi extremism.

In this timely and important book, Tim Bird and Alex Marshall offer a panoramic view of international involvement in Afghanistan from 2001 to 2010, weaving together analysis of military strategy, regional context, aid policy, the Afghan government and the many disagreements between and within the Western powers involved in the intervention. They argue that the international community has failed in its selfimposed effort to solve Afghanistan’s problems and that there are broader lessons to be learned from their struggle, particularly in terms of counterinsurgency and the ever-complicated work of ‘nation-building’. ‘It is hard to fault the book’s thesis that the West lost its way in Afghanistan because of an ignorance of history, an American preoccupation with a different country, as well as conflicting national objectives and poor planning on the ground’ – Nicholas Nugent, International Affairs

Dilip Hiro is the author of more than 30 books, including After Empire: The Birth of the Multipolar World and Inside Central Asia, listed by the Financial Times as one of the best history books of 2009.

Tim Bird is a lecturer at the Joint Services Command and Staff College and the Defence Studies Department, King’s College, London. Alex Marshall is Lecturer in History in the War Studies Department of the University of Glasgow.

The End of the Chinese Dream Why Chinese People Fear the Future

Gerard Lemos Glossy television images of happy, industrious and increasingly prosperous workers show a bright view of life in twenty-first-century China. But behind the officially approved story is a different reality, Gerard Lemos reveals new in this extensively researched book. Lemos conducted hundreds of interviews with Chinese men and women in non-westernised areas distant from such cities as Beijing and Shanghai. He reports that the lives his subjects describe belie the myth of a harmonious, cohesive Chinese society. Much as the government promotes such a positive image, everyday people in China are beleaguered by immense social and community problems as well as personal, family and financial anxieties. The author considers the implications of these findings and analyses how China’s community and social problems threaten the ambitious nation’s hopes for a cohesive future. Gerard Lemos is a social policy expert and frequent advisor to governments, businesses and charities. Old Treacheries and New Deceits

Daniel Branch

Stephen Chan

In this illuminating account of Kenya’s first fifty years of independence, an authority on African history analyses how ethnic violence, government corruption, inequality and other difficult issues hinder national prosperity and justice.

In this timely and important book, Stephen Chan explores the political landscape of southern Africa, examining how it is poised to change over the next years and what the repercussions will be across the continent.

Branch describes how Kenya constructed itself as a state and how ethnicity has proved a powerful force in national politics from the start, as have disorder and violence. Tracing an escalation of government corruption over time, the author brings his discussion to the present, paying particular attention to the rigged election of 2007, the subsequent compromise government, and Kenya’s prospects as a still-evolving independent state. ‘there had been a glaring shortage of really good general works on its post-independence history. [Kenya] not only plugs that hole, but has much to say too about the possible futures of many other poor post-colonial states.’ – Stephen Howe, The Independent

‘If there is any book that ‘explains’ the tumultuous recent history of southern Africa, this is surely it’ – Michael Holman, former Africa editor for the Financial Times ‘Chan has written a highly readable narrative of the past 30 or so years. His insights are invaluable, born of his intimate working knowledge of and presence in the region.’ – Andrew Dodgshon, Tribune ‘[The] best written book about southern African politics in the last few decades.’ – Professor Paul Moorcraft, RUSI Journal

The Last European Dictatorship

Why Italy Must Conquer Its Demons to Face the Future

Andrew Wilson This book is the first in English to explore both Belarus’s complicated road to nationhood and to examine in detail its politics and economics since 1991, the nation’s first year of true independence. Andrew Wilson focuses particular attention on Aliaksandr Lukashenka’s surprising longevity as president, despite human rights abuses and involvement in yet another rigged election in December 2010. ‘Wilson’s depth of knowledge is impressive and his detailed analysis of Lukashenka’s economic policy illuminates how he has managed to hold onto power for so long.’ – Lucy Popescu, Belfast Telegraph (Syndicated from The Independent)

Once Italy was Europe’s own emerging economy, a society that blended dynamism and super-fast growth with a lifestyle that was the envy of all. Now it is a major threat to the future of the new Euro, and of the European Union as a whole, as a political system shorn of credibility struggles to deal with huge public debts and anaemic levels of economic growth. Young people are leaving the country in droves, frustrated at the lack of opportunity. Older people cling on to their rights and privileges, fearful of what the future might hold.

‘Andrew Wilson’s incisive and accurate judgment and the depth of his research make him a true expert.’ – Edward Lucas, Central and Eastern Europe correspondent for The Economist

In this lively, up-to-the-minute book, former Economist editor Bill Emmott explains how Italy got to this point, what Italians feel about it, and what can be done to bring the country into better times.

Andrew Wilson is reader in Ukrainian studies at the School of Slavonic and East European Studies. He is the author of The Ukrainians, Virtual Politics, and Ukraine’s Orange Revolution, all published by Yale.

Bill Emmott was editor-in-chief of The Economist in 1993–2006, and is now a freelance commentator on international affairs. He is a regular columnist for The Times in London and La Stampa in Italy

New Worlds

Democracy Interrupted

A Religious History of Latin America

Jo Tuckman

John Lynch

In 2000, Mexico’s long invincible Institutional Revolutionary Party (PRI) lost the presidential election to Vicente Fox of the National Action Party (PAN). The ensuing changeover – after 71 years of PRI dominance – was hailed as the new beginning of a new era of hope for Mexico. Yet the promises of the PAN victory were not consolidated. In this vivid account of Mexico’s recent history, a journalist with extensive reporting experience investigates the nation’s young democracy, its shortcomings and achievements, and why the PRI is favoured to retake the presidency in 2012.

This extraordinary book encompasses the time period from the first Christian evangelists’ arrival in Latin America to the dictators of the late twentieth century. With unsurpassed knowledge of Latin American history, John Lynch new sets out to explore the reception of Christianity by native peoples and how it influenced their social and religious lives as the centuries passed. As attentive to modern times as to the colonial period, Lynch also explores the extent to which Indian religion and ancestral ways survived within the new Christian culture.

Jo Tuckman reports on the murky, terrifying world of Mexico’s drug wars, the counterproductive government strategy, and the impact of U.S. policies. She describes the reluctance and inability of politicians to seriously tackle rampant corruption, environmental degradation, pervasive poverty and acute inequality. While Mexico faces complex challenges that can often seem insurmountable, Tuckman concludes, the unflagging vitality and imagination of many in Mexico inspire hope for a better future.

The book follows the development of religious culture over time by focusing on peak periods of change: the response of religion to the Enlightenment, the emergence of the Church from the wars of independence, the Romanisation of Latin American religion as the papacy overtook the Spanish crown in effective control of the Church, the growing challenge of liberalism and the secular state, and in the twentieth century, military dictators’ assaults on human rights.

Jo Tuckman is a Mexico-based foreign correspondent who reports for The Guardian, among other publications on both sides of the Atlantic.

John Lynch is Emeritus Professor of Latin American History and former director of the Insitute of Latin American Studies, University of London.

A Single Roll of the Dice Obama’s Diplomacy with Iran

Trita Parsi Have the diplomatic efforts of the Obama administration towards Iran failed? Was the Bush administration’s emphasis on military intervention, refusal to negotiate and pursuit of regime change a better approach? How new can the United States best address the ongoing turmoil in Tehran? This book provides a definitive and comprehensive analysis of the Obama administration’s early diplomatic outreach to Iran and discusses the best way to move towards more positive relations between the two discordant states. Trita Parsi, a Middle East foreign policy expert with extensive Capitol Hill and United Nations experience, interviewed 70 high-ranking officials from the U.S., Iran, Europe, Israel, Saudi Arabia, Turkey and Brazil—including the top American and Iranian negotiators—for this book. Parsi uncovers the previously unknown story of American and Iranian negotiations during Obama’s early years as president, the calculations behind the two nations’ dealings, and the real reasons for their current stalemate. Trita Parsi is president of the National Iranian American Council and a former Public Policy Scholar at the Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars. 2012 304pp. ISBN 978-0-300-16936-2 £18.99* book also available

Dignity

Outsourcing War & Peace

The Essential Role It Plays in Resolving Conflict

Preserving Public Values in a World of Privatized Foreign Affairs

Donna Hicks, Ph.D. • Foreword by Archbishop Emeritus Desmond Tutu

Laura A. Dickinson

‘This book is a must read for those who want to experience peace in their everyday lives and peace in the world around them. Without an understanding of dignity, there is no hope for such change. If you want to find the weak links in a democracy, look for where people are suffering. You will most likely see a variety of violations. If you want peace, be sure everyone’s dignity is intact.’ – Archbishop Desmond Tutu

As states, corporations and international organisations increasingly outsource foreign policy functions to private firms, accountability has become an urgent concern. The author proposes specific ways to hold contractors more accountable through an innovative variety of legal and structural reforms. 2011 288pp. ISBN 978-0-300-14486-4 £25.00*

The Peacekeeping Economy Using Economic Relationships to Build a More Peaceful, Prosperous, and Secure World Lloyd J. Dumas

‘Grand Strategies concerns statesmanship and strategy: the uses of power, the fate of alliances, war and peace. It also, happily, provides a tour through the Great Books, giving special attention to nation-states and their vexed relations.’ – William Anthony Hay, Wall Street Journal

The idea that military strength is synonymous with security is deeply entrenched, but economic relationships can offer a far more effective, and far less costly, means of maintaining security. Dumas defines the right kind of economic relationship and addresses practical concerns in establishing and maintaining these relationships.

British Military Failure in Iraq and Afghanistan

When Waging Wars Is More Important Than Winning Them

Frank Ledwidge

David Keen

In this eye-opening analysis of the causes of military failure and its enormous costs, Frank Ledwidge examines the British involvement in Iraq and Afghanistan, asking how and why it went so wrong.

‘a devastating, highly readable critique of why Britain’s armed forces have fared so badly in two of the country’s most recent and controversial conflicts: Iraq and Afghanistan’ – Sean Rayment, The Daily Telegraph ‘a savage indictment of the military leadership that got British soldiers into one impossible situation after another in Iraq and Afghanistan.’ – Rodric Braithwaite, Financial Times ‘the author deserves applause for bluntly expressing the truths about our recent military failures that too many of those involved find it convenient to obscure.’ – Max Hastings, The Sunday Times Frank Ledwidge served in Bosnia, Kosovo and Iraq as a military intelligence officer and in Afghanistan as a civilian justice advisor. He is currently a lecturer for Kings College, London at the RAF College, Cranwell. May 2012 304pp. Paper ISBN 978-0-300-18274-3 £10.99* book also available

There are currently between twenty and thirty civil wars worldwide, while at a global level the Cold War has been succeeded by a ‘war on drugs’ and a ‘war on terror’ that continues to rage a new decade after 9/11. Why is this, when we know how destructive war is in both human and economic terms? Why do the efforts of aid organisations and international diplomats founder so often? In this important book David Keen investigates why conflicts are so prevalent and so intractable, even when one side has much greater military resources. Could it be that endemic disorder and a ‘state of emergency’ are more useful than bringing conflict to a close? Keen asks who benefits from wars – whether economically, politically, or psychologically– and argues that in order to bring them successfully to an end we need to understand the complex vested interests on all sides. David Keen, professor of complex emergencies at the London School of Economics, is the author of Endless War?, The Benefits of Famine and Complex Emergencies. Counterinsurgency from the Civil War to Iraq

Eric D. Patterson

Mark Totten

In the first book to apply just war theory to the problem of ending wars, Eric Patterson presents a three-part view of justice in endof-war settings involving order, justice and reconciliation. Patterson’s case studies range from successful applications of jus post bellum, such as Bretton Woods or the Marshall Plan, to debacles such as present-day Iraq.

‘It is rare to read a book which combines academic excellence with such timely advice on a question of national importance. Mark Moyar has achieved this in his penetrating examination of leadership … His perceptive analysis will have enduring value on both sides of the Atlantic for military commanders, policymakers and historians alike.’ – General Sir David Richards, Chief of the General Staff, RUSI Journal

‘Mark Totten does two things in this book: first, he provides a wonderfully learned account of the argument about pre-emption and prevention in just war theory. And then he makes a strong argument of his own for revising the standard doctrine. Theorists should pay attention; statesmen and generals, too.’ – Michael Walzer, Institute for Advanced Study

John France This major new history encompasses warfare around the world from 3100 B.C. to the Gulf War and challenges accepted ideas about the development of military strength, the impact of culture on war, the future of Western dominance, and much more. ‘It’s hard to think of a more impressive single-volume history of the not-only Western way of war.’ – Noel Malcolm, The Sunday Telegraph 2011 456pp. 32 b/w illus. Realeconomik The Hidden Cause of the Great Recession (And How to Avert the Next One)

Grigory Yavlinsky Translated by Antonina W. Bouis

Former deputy prime minister of Russia Grigory Yavlinsky, an internationally respected free-market economist, makes a powerful case that the often-cited causes of global economic instability – institutional failings, wrong decisions by regulators, insufficient or incorrect information, and the like – are only secondary to a far more significant underlying cause: the failure to understand that universal social norms are essential to thriving businesses and social and economic progress. Yavlinsky explores the widespread disregard for moral values in business decisions and calls for restoration of principled behaviour in politics and economic practices. The unwelcome alternative, he warns, will be a twentyfirst-century global economy in the grip of unending crises. ‘Grigory Yavlinsky’s book is an important contribution to understanding the interplay between social norms and modern economy. The current global crisis makes his analysis especially relevant.’ – George Soros Grigory Yavlinsky is a Russian economist and founder and member of the Russian United Democratic Party 2011 192pp. ISBN 978-0-300-15910-3 £20.00* book also available

The New Industrial Revolution

Why Marx Was Right

Consumers, Globalization and the End of Mass Production

Terry Eagleton

Peter Marsh The world is on the cusp of a manufacturing revolution, and opportunities abound for countries and companies who understand the changes, says the author of this upbeat new analysis. Peter Marsh explores 250 years in the history of manufacturing, then examines the characteristics of the industrial revolution that is taking place right now. The driving forces that influence what types of goods are made and who makes them are little understood, Marsh observes. He discusses the key changes in what is happening in manufacturing today, including advances in technology, a greater focus on tailormade goods aimed at specific individuals and industry users, participation of many more countries in world manufacturing, and the growing importance of sustainable forms of production. With broad historical sweep and dozens of engaging examples, Marsh explains these changes and their import both for consumers making purchase choices and for manufacturers assessing how to participate successfully in the new industrial era. Peter Marsh is manufacturing editor at the Financial Times. May 2012 320pp. ISBN 978-0-300-11777-6 £25.00* book also available

In this combative, controversial book, Terry Eagleton takes issue with the prejudice that Marxism is dead and done with. Taking ten of the most common objections to Marxism – that it leads to political tyranny, that it reduces everything to the economic, now in that it is a form of historical paper determinism, and so on – he demonstrates in each case what a woeful travesty of Marx’s own thought these assumptions are. In a world in which capitalism has been shaken to its roots by some major crises, Why Marx Was Right is as urgent and timely as it is brave and candid. Written with Eagleton’s familiar wit, humour and clarity, it will attract an audience far beyond the confines of academia. ‘[An] excellent book’ – Owen Hatherley, The Guardian ‘Not so much a good read as a romp, this is an irresistibly lively, and thought-provoking essay.’ – Michael Kerrigan, The Scotsman ‘This is a wonderful book that every socialist should have on their bookshelves.’ – Gareth Jenkins, Socialist Worker Terry Eagleton is Distinguished Professor of English Literature at the University of Lancaster, and Professor of Cultural Theory at the National University of Ireland, Galway. 2012 272pp. Paper ISBN 978-0-300-18153-1 £10.99* book also available

Political Ideas in Twentieth-Century Europe

Politics in the Hebrew Bible

Jan-Werner Müller This book is the first major account of political thought in twentieth-century Europe – both West and East – to appear since the end of the Cold War. Skillfully blending intellectual, political and cultural history, Jan-Werner Müller elucidates the ideas that shaped the period of ideological extremes before 1945 and the liberalisation of West European politics after the Second World War. He also offers vivid portraits of famous as well as unjustly forgotten political thinkers and the movements and institutions they inspired.

Michael Walzer In this eagerly awaited book, political theorist Michael Walzer reports his findings after decades of thinking about the politics of the Hebrew Bible. Attentive to nuance while engagingly straightforward, Walzer examines the new laws, the histories, the prophecies and the wisdom of the ancient biblical writers and discusses their views on such central political questions as justice, hierarchy, war, the authority of kings and priests, and the experience of exile.

‘[A] fine study of the impact of mass democracy on European political cultures.’ – David Marquand, New Statesman
