Artist Profiles Ransom Wilson, flute Ransom Wilson’s long and varied career has seen him as an international flute virtuoso and recording artist, celebrated chamber musician, and now a busy conductor. In addition to his post as Music Director & Conductor of the Redlands Symphony, he is Artistic Director of New York’s Le Train Bleu ensemble and Music Director of the Lar Lubovitch Dance Company. Maestro Wilson was also the Music Director of the Solisti New York Orchestra, the OK Mozart International Festival, and the Idyllwild Arts Academy Orchestra.

He has appeared as guest conductor with many major orchestras, including the Saint Paul Chamber Orchestra, the Houston Symphony, the Denver Symphony, the San Francisco Chamber Symphony, the Orchestra of St. Luke’s, the Krakow Philharmonic, and the London Symphony. Ransom Wilson led a successful tour of Southern California with James Galway and the Los Angeles Chamber Orchestra, and he has accompanied dozens of internationally-renowned artists from the podium, including Itzhak Perlman, André Watts, Frederica von Stade, Joshua Bell, and Hilary Hahn. He has also gained a reputation as an opera conductor, serving on the conducting staff at New York’s Metropolitan Opera and conducting for Glimmerglass Opera, New York City Opera, and the International Opera Center in Amsterdam.

More than merely gaining a conductor, the Redlands Symphony has gained a musician who is recognized worldwide as one of the finest flutists of our time. Wilson has appeared as flute soloist with the Chicago Symphony, Philadelphia Orchestra, San Francisco

Symphony, and London Symphony. He has released 27 albums as a flute soloist and 11 as a conductor, winning three Grammy nominations along the way. His newly released recording, on the Nimbus Records label, is Four French Flute Concertos, with the BBC Concert Orchestra.

In addition to his ongoing professorship at Yale University, Wilson has taught master classes at the Paris Conservatory, Oberlin Conservatory, Jerusalem Music Academy, and at 8 music schools in Taiwan. He also conducted and performed at Chamber Music Northwest in Portland, the Marseille Conservatory in France, Carnegie Hall in New York, with Camerata Pacifica all over Southern California, at the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center, a series of recitals in Israel, and recording sessions in Wales, UK with celebrated pianist François Dumont.

Joseph Murfin, percussion

René Izquierdo is a professor of classical guitar at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee.

He has performed throughout Europe, Asia, Russia, North, Central, and South America, Cuba, and the Caribbean as a solo recitalist, chamber musician, and soloist with orchestra.

His performances have received wide critical acclaim, and he is recognized as one of America’s classical guitar virtuosos. René has shared the stage with Eliot Fisk, Benjamin Verdery, Jorge Morel, Ransom Wilson, Lucy Shelton, Carlo Aonzo, the Quintet of the Americas, Susanna Phillips, Todd Leavy, and David Jolley, and has recorded with Paquito D’Rivera, among others. Composers such as Jorge Morel and Carlos R. Rivera have dedicated works to him. A native of Cuba, René studied at the Amadeo Roldan Con servatory and Superior Institute of Art in Havana, and earned a Master of Music degree and an Artist Diploma degree from the Yale University School of Music. He is a winner of the JoAnn Falletta International Guitar Competition, the Extremadura International Guitar Competition, and the Stotsenberg International Guitar Competition.

Joe Murfin is a professional percussionist known for his versatility in a wide variety of musical styles. He performs regularly in the New Haven area and has given concerts and masterclasses at many prestigious institutions, including the Percussive Arts Society, the University of Michigan, Interlochen Arts Academy, and Yale University. He holds a Doctorate of Musical Arts from the University of Wisconsin-Madison, a Masters of Applied Mathematics from Auburn University, and is currently an Assistant Professor at Middlesex Community College, where he teaches courses in music and mathematics.
