Artist Profiles Ettore Causa, viola

Boris Berman, piano

Awarded both the P. Schidlof Prize and the J. Barbirolli Prize for “the most beautiful sound” at the prestigious Lionel Tertis International Viola Competition in 2000, Italian-born violist Ettore Causa has made solo and recital appearances in major venues around the world, including Carnegie Hall, Zurich Tonhalle, National Music Auditorium (Madrid), Salle Cortot, Tokyo Symphony Hall, and Teatro Colón, and has performed at such international festivals as the Gstaad Menuhin, Salzburg, Tivoli, and Norfolk Chamber Music festivals.

Boris Berman has performed in more than fifty countries on six continents with leading orchestras, on major recital series, and at important festivals. Born in Moscow, he studied at Moscow Tchaikovsky Conservatory with Lev Oborin. In 1973, he left a flourishing career in the Soviet Union to immigrate to Israel.

A devoted chamber musician, Causa is a former member of the Aria Quartet and a current member of the Poseidon Quartet.

He has collaborated with such internationally renowned musicians as the Tokyo and Elias string quartets, Pascal Rogé, Boris Berman, Peter Frankl, Thomas Adès, Natalie Clein, Ana Chumachenco, Ani Kavafian, and many others.

Causa studied at the International Menuhin Music Academy with Alberto Lysy and Johannes Eskar, and at the Manhattan School of Music with Michael Tree. He taught viola and chamber music at the International Menuhin Music Academy and joined the Yale School of Music faculty in 2009. Causa performs on a viola made for him by Frederic Chaudière in 2003.

Berman is Professor of Piano and Coordinator of the Piano Department at the Yale School of Music and conducts master classes throughout the world. He has been named an Honorary Professor of the Shanghai Conservatory of Music, the Royal Danish Academy of Music in Copenhagen, and the China Conservatory of Music in Beijing.

He is frequently invited to join the juries of international competitions.

A Grammy nominee, Berman has recorded all the solo piano works of Prokofiev and Schnittke, the complete sonatas of Scriabin, and works by Mozart, Weber, Schumann, Brahms, Franck, Shostakovich, Debussy, Cage, Berio, and Joplin.

Berman is the author of two books, Notes from the Pianist’s Bench and Prokofiev’s Piano Sonatas: A Guide for the Listener and the Performer, and is an editor of Shanghai Music Publishing House’s critical edition of Prokofiev’s Piano Sonatas. » borisberman.com
