EXPATS ANONYMOUS, Yale Cabaret, 2021

A note from the show Team: This piece is about - and would not exist without - the pandemic. It is difficult to imagine that one little report of a virus in Wuhan, China, would result in a global standstill, keeping most of us indoors and behind masks for over a year. These were things that happened “elsewhere”, to “other people.” It is a privilege to feel safe. It is a privilege to feel cared for, and to feel at home. When crisis hits, some of the most vulnerable of us - our immigrants, our guests - are the first to be blamed, the targets of political scapegoating, the sacrificial offering at the altar of “improving the economy” or “reducing the burden on national resources.” We are all immigrants, and yet not all immigrants are created equal - some may be invited to call their new land home, some will forever be “others.” How does one reconcile belonging and birthright? How do we survive a pandemic with our humanity intact? Expats Anonymous - written and performed in Singlish (Colloquial Singaporean-English) - is the loving fruit of a transnational team of artists communicating across cultures, spaces, and time-zones (EST/SGT/PST). Our uniquely intercontinental collaboration is only made possible by the Yale Cabaret’s openness and commitment to produce inclusive and collaborative works. In these trying times, it is an absolute honor to create art, and it excites us to be able to create work that boldly embraces our global community. Our hope is that the piece resonates with those who struggle to be accepted in their respective homes, illuminates nuances of privilege and disempowerment in our communities, and serves as a reminder that we are more connected than it may appear. We need each other to survive. -The Expats Anonymous Production Team

This tragic event has left the team shocked and heartbroken. Expats Anonymous opened as planned, but we are mindful that this show is a community space, and our community is our priority. Our hope is that the piece could serve as a reminder that we are stronger, and more connected than it may appear. We need each other to survive.

Mission and Values Yale Cabaret is an artistic community that invites students from the Yale School of Drama and our neighbors throughout greater Yale University and New Haven to imagine utopia. We artist-explorers join in spirit and space to make theater that manifests our wildest collaborative visions. Fueled by the values of symbiotic collaboration, neighborliness, accountability, and wonder, we discover how much we can make, experience, and imagine together. The state of Connecticut and Yale University occupy the ancestral lands of the Mohegan, Mashantucket Pequot, Eastern Pequot, Schaghticoke, Golden Hill Paugussett, Niantic, and Quinnipiac and other Algonquian speaking peoples. We honor and respect their stewardship of this land. Symbiotic Collaboration.

Neighborliness.

We approach each collaboration in pursuit of our utopian ideal- that every team member is fed and fulfilled artistically, intellectually, and spiritually. We will pursue new channels of collaboration and support artists in our community to develop sustainable and generative ways to work together, because that creates JOY.

The Cab is a space for learning, growth, and the joy of storytelling for current YSD students as well as for our neighbors at greater Yale and throughout New Haven. The stories and artistic approaches on our stage will be inclusive and accessible to all in our community.

Accountability. The Cab has a responsibility to foster open and direct communication between our leadership, artists, and the communities we serve. Each member of our community is empowered to contribute to its betterment, and every member makes a difference.

Wonder. The Cab will cultivate surprise and artistic innovation. We are explorers in search of “wow”. Pushing the boundaries of theatrical expression and innovation with a well-proportioned season of courageous new plays, reinventions of established plays, and devised and multidisciplinary works, design-driven explorations, and work that is non-text-driven, The Cab strives to ignite our community’s imagination.

A note from the CAB TEAM: Looking at Graphic Designer Mikayla Johnson’s breathtaking show art for Rachel Chin’s Expats Anonymous, we’re reminded of the experience of planning the 53rd season of the Yale Cabaret. We floated in uncharted virtual waters, not knowing what new universes we might discover in the depths. Not having a theater seemed like a constraint at first, but it quickly became clear how unleashed we could be without the physical walls of the basement around us. On the community interest survey we conducted last summer, many of you told us you wanted to see the Cabaret leave the “YSD Bubble.” You said, “Reach a global audience!” and “Go international!” Then Rachel Chin came to us with a proposal for an urgent story of immigration and belonging in this moment of pandemic. She envisioned a collaboration that would spark international dialogue between US-based artists and artists in Singapore and across the world. The team of Expats Anonymous has come together, literally across time and space, to bring you this play that courageously stages our “now,” representing perspectives too often excluded by typically self-obsessive Western theater. This is theater for our community, and our community is the world. Expats Anonymous asserts our interconnectedness and our interdependence, illuminating the challenges we share across borders. Thank you for joining the conversation. -Cab 53 Leadership Team Maeli Goren, Jisun Kim, Nicole E. Lang, and Matthew Sonnenfeld

Our Donors Since its founding in 1968, the Yale Cabaret has been a place where Yale School of Drama students can experiment with new theatrical forms and develop our artistry outside of the classroom.
