WHAT DO YOU GET WHEN A TALENTED FASHION ILLUSTRATOR MARRIES A SUCCESSFUL RESTAURANTEUR? ONLY THE MOST STYLISH OF WEDDINGS WITH A STRONG FOCUS ON SERVING THEIR GUESTS GREAT FOOD AND WINE. After being introduced at a restaurant that Christian owned at the time, a mutual friend played a big part in ensuring these two took notice of each other. With a nod to this hospitality background, Kelly and Christian planned a relaxed, intimate and fun filled day with 65 of their closest family and friends. Starting the day with an hour of summer cocktails ensured everyone got to mix and mingle before the ceremony. Boyd Baker House with it's acreage of bush land and the surrounding flora and fauna provided the perfect backdrop to this chic affair.

The Dress

"Finding a wedding dress was difficult! Wedding dresses seem to have zero relation to fashion or anything you would actually want to wear and I always felt like I was trying on something for a costume party. I constantly said that I would feel like a dork wearing a wedding dress while my friends had lovely outfits on! I would see amazing dresses online that were absolutely stunning (and ridiculously expensive), but could never come close in a bridal store, I was also adamant I didn’t want to wear white which made it very hard. Luckily for me my friend Baden Minas talked me in to letting him make me a dress, which he had never done before, but really wanted to do, as he is aiming to become a full time dressmaker. He talked me through the process step by step, and after he took my measurements once and came back with a toile that fit perfectly I was sold."

"Kelly looked like she had stepped off a movie set, and what I loved most was she stayed true to her personal style and didn't just go for a bridal look; instead choosing pieces and beauty looks which would be amazing even if it wasn't her wedding day." JESSICA SIM, PHOTOGRAPHER

"THE FLOWERS WERE PROBABLY ONE OF MY FAVOURITE THINGS AT THE WEDDING. I didn’t get to see anything other than the bouquets until I walked to where the ceremony was, and all I wanted to do was run over and look at the flowers before I walked down the aisle, they looked stunning. Because the wedding was outside and in the bush I really wanted flowers that looked wild and overflowing and weren’t too strict or uptight. What resulted was a beautiful abundance of flowers that ran down the centre of each table, they were in various vessels of differing heights and set the scene perfectly."

"The rules were no jars, nothing too bright and I really wanted lush deep burgundies with soft silvers, moss, peaches and fruits to tie in with the palette of our outfits and not compete with the setting."

LAURA & MARK photography by Eric Kelley

TALLAPOOSA | GEORGIA | UNITED STATES Laura and Mark first met several years ago whilst dating other people - a brother and sister in fact. They then went their separate ways and didn't meet up again until early 2012 when Mark made contact via Facebook of all places; just to check in and see how life was treating her. A spark was triggered and from that day forward they spoke every day and very quickly fell in love realising they were meant to be together. Mark says about his wife, "I believe with all my heart that your wife is the greatest gift that God will ever give you. Cherish her and love her, putting her before yourself in every aspect of your life. Like the word says “A man who finds a wife finds a good thing!! A very elaborate proposal was staged which culminated with a gazebo set up under a giant oak tree in the local town square. Mark had already arranged for Laura's parents to decorate the gazebo and it was here that he gave her the last of three letters she'd received along the journey, as well as a handwritten letter he had presented to her parents when he asked for their daughter's hand in marriage and a new bible with her soon to be married name on it.

eing a graphic designer by trade, meant Laura leapt at the chance to get creative. From doing the calligraphy and illustrations for their stationery suite, to drawing out their menu on a large black board, she added personal touches to the visuals through out the day. Having worked with her previously on editorial shoots Laura was familiar with her florists unlimited talent when it came to planning the organic feel to her flowers. Wanting a untraditional look she cleverly combined beautiful blooms of dahlias and ranunculus with twisted twigs and pheasant feathers for a more rustic feel. With the bridesmaid each wearing a different colour, bouquets were designed to compiment the varying hues turning Laura's dream into reality.

ark is an avid outdoorsman so the natural setting of Foxwoods made choosing a venue very easy for the couple. "He loves to fish and to hunt, and we both love all things rustic. When I first visited, I instantly knew it was the place where we were going to be married. I could envision it all, the billowing drapes on the barn door, the little patio lights, the lanterns, the whimsical flower arrangements, bonfires and close friends. I could see it all. I think the venue kind of set the tone, it matched our personalities perfectly and really just helped our vision to fall perfectly into place."

most memorable moment of the day was when Laura stepped out from behind the barn doors and in all of her beauty and of all her excellence walked down the aisle pure and spotless without wrinkle or blemish to become as one with me as my wife. An indescribable moment that can never be taken from my memory. The holiest day there has ever been." "The

"Remember that this day is about you and your wife. Cherish the engagement and do not let it go by quickly. Take time out to really enjoy yourself and enjoy being engaged. Men, also remember that this day is your wife’s day and that she has dreamed of it her entire life, let her fairy tale come true."

JESSICA JUSTIN AKAROA | NEW ZEALAND photography by Fiona Andersen It was after getting engaged on a vacation to Australia and New Zealand that this Philadelphia based couple got the "crazy" idea to return to the beautiful little hamlet of Akaroa in New Zealand's South Island for their wedding. They fell in love with the town; it's people, the landscape and the food. Wanting to share that with their nearest and dearest they began plotting to make it happen. Describing their day as "romantic, intimate and timeless", Jessica and Justin had sixteen of their closest friends and family make the journey half way around the world to join them for their ceremony at Maison de la Mer, a luxury lodge in Akaroa. They followed this up with a reception at The Little Bistro where they proceeded to dance until the wee small hours.

The proposal happened during a wonderful vacation to Australia and New Zealand.

I was completely surprised when it happened. We were walking between Bondi and Coogee Beach and Justin stopped to take a picture of me. In order to distract me, he said something was wrong with the camera so, I urgently grabbed it from him to try and figure out what was going on – that’s when I looked up and he was down on one knee. I don’t remember anything he said because I started crying immediately! It was wonderful, we called our parents from halfway across the world and then we had the next two weeks to celebrate on our own.

"The inspiration was Akaroa itself."

The Music...

Justin, my family and I love music but since I knew it was going to be such a small ceremony and that we would be gathered in tighter spaces I relied on my iPod, portable speakers and hours upon hours of making playlists for all parts of the day and night. My best friend hit play before I walked down the aisle and once again after our first kiss as man and wife to be “Home by Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeroes. Cocktail hour, first dance, a four hour meal and hours of dancing all resulted in a fun DJ-ing gig that I gave myself.

“If I know a song of Africa, of the giraffe and the African new moon lying on her back, of the plows in the fields and the sweaty faces of the coffee pickers, does Africa know a song of me? BRYONY & SIMON PHOTOGRAPHY BY LARA HOTZ sydney | australia

A CREATIVE NEW YORK BASED, AUSTRALIAN COUPLE HEAD HOME TO SYDNEY TO CELEBRATE THEIR BIG DAY, INCORPORATING SOME TRADITIONAL JEWISH ELEMENTS ALONG THE WAY. Marrying in a 1900's pie factory isn't something many couples can boast about. The Grounds of Alexandria is now the flagship venue for it's speciality coffee, with a research and testing facility alongside it's cafe which provided a unique venue for Bryony and Simon's wedding day. With it's luscious gardens of heirloom vegetables and fragrant herbs it lent a rustic and industrial aesthetic and provided a distinct backdrop for photos amongst the many vintage props and refitted shipping containers. Also there to provide a little light entertainment was the resident piglet who was more than obliging when it came to posing for photos.

"We were so lucky to have one of our best friends act as our celebrant. At one point during the ceremony, all three of us were crying!"

"We have been living in New York and hadn’t been home to Sydney in two years. Walking into our ceremony and seeing all our closest family and friends, most of whom we hadn’t seen in a very long time, was such an overwhelming and lovely feeling."

"Tears, love and a piglet sum up our day."

Like many modern day brides, Kirsten turned to Pinterest and wedding blogs when it came to researching ideas for her wedding to Andreas. In fact her obsession with weddings hasn't exactly stopped now that the big day is over. Further inspiration came from her longtime love of lavender – the flower, the scent and the colour – and lace, and these aspects all came into play throughout the romantic yet rustic decor, and furthermore suited their surroundings perfectly. Deciding on their Sonoma Valley venue was a simple decision for the couple since it was the place that Andreas had proposed the previous year.

Setting up a private trail ride at Kunde Estate Winery, he stopped halfway along the ride at a spot called Olive Hill and promptly got down on bended knee and asked Kirsten to be his wife. The couple didn't bother looking at other venues as being able to say their "I do's" at the spot they got engaged in was more special than anywhere else could be. With 15 months to plan every detail, Kirsten threw herself into it whilst thoroughly enjoying her new status as fiancé. She says "It was a special time that gave us a lot of development in solving problems, relating to each other, communicating and overall enjoying the entire process. "

"It was the more unexpected and unplanned moments that I seem to favour. After the ceremony when our bridal party let us have a lengthy walk back down the aisle ahead of the guests. I directed my new husband to walk with me and we ended up standing amongst dirt and weeds, in the middle of nature. Soon after we stopped a good distance from the aisle, Andreas breaks down crying and we hug for a few minutes. This, I did not 'plan' as part of our day so it was very special to us both. Real feeling and emotion that we couldn’t hold back. Thankfully, our photographer Andria was hiding amongst the trees and was able to snap this shot. We adore looking back on it.

"Even putting the cutesy wedding details aside, I think our longer engagement was such a wonderful time because it put a new maturity and depth on our relationship."

CONCEPT & STYLING BY KRISTY RICE

Chaviano Couture’s newest hand painted collaboration with Kristy Rice, aptly named the "Kristy" gown, was the centerpiece of inspiration for this shoot. Juxtaposing the softest palette of blush hues with a flower farm backdrop, the concept of heriloom has been interpreted as a feeling, an action, a choice. An Heirloom wedding is one where mindful actions lead to exquisite, deeply personal statements of art and life. From native woods used in stationery design to organic, fresh picked blooms used in floral design the bride's design choices reflect a pride of place.

Voluminous

bouquets feature poppies, peonies,

poppy pods, ferns, and sweet peas together with

raspberries and blueberries,

All the blooms were grown organically at the farm where the shoot took place. Many of them were heirloom varieties, particularly the highly fragrant sweet peas and peonies. Combined with unriped fruit and lots of fresh herbs they produced a lush seasonal aesthetic that fit the farm setting.

“9 yards of silk organza were shipped to our studio and for the better part of two weeks I painted watery inks across the sheer surface. Bold, sweeping brushstrokes of blush were painted with delicate, swirling rosettes, whimsical droplets of creamy gold at the flowers’ centers and graceful white leafy moments.” KRISTY RICE, MOMENTAL DESIGNS

An ombre of hand painted wood, stationery suite featuring veneers of Cedar, Oak, Curly Maple and Sassafras.

“When Annette from Chaviano Couture and I first met we talked of big, loose patterns and how to interpret the washy, whimsical nature of watercolor on fabric. Annette wanted a soft blush pink inspired palette that could nearly read as neutral, paired with an understated but feminine pattern. We wanted the wow factor to be in the painting. The art of something crafted to be worn on one of life’s most joyous days.” KRISTY

Audrey Michael PHOTOGRAPHY BY BROSNAN PHOTOGRAPHIC BORRIS, COUNTY CARLOW | IRELAND

6am in a Hong Kong elevator is not exactly where you expect to meet your future partner but that's exactly what happened when a caffeine deprived Audrey spotted Mike holding a Starbuck's coffee and insisted he tell her where he got it. Two years later, almost to the day, Mike invited Audrey to spend the weekend with him in Hong Kong (they were both in other parts of Asia working at the time) when he proposed to her in the very same elevator giving her thirty seconds before the door opened. Ireland is the couple's "favourite place on earth" and they have a lot of family there, so they decided to hold the wedding in an Irish castle, after a wee bit of prompting from Mike's Dad. "At Mike’s parents 40th wedding anniversary, during his Dad’s speech, he asked Mike if he was ever going to marry this gorgeous woman next to him… and if he does, would he please have the wedding in Ireland!" So to Borris House in Ireland they all went and celebrated with a Great Gatsby style wedding.

The dress "Six months before the wedding, someone asked me about what my dress looked like. I asked why everyone was rushing me. She said, "you know it takes 6 months to have your wedding dress made!" I was in New York for work so I bought a wedding magazine on my way home from work and pulled out pictures of two dresses I liked. They were both Monique Lhullier. I booked an appointment at her salon for the morning after I returned to Los Angeles. It was an instant success. I bought the first dress I tried on! It was magical."

The details "When we walked into the barn for our rehearsal dinner the transformation left us speechless. We knew at that moment we did not want our wedding to end. We were hoping for slow motion to enjoy every minute of every event."

PAIGEandJAMES photography by Carrie Patterson JACKSON HOLE, WYOMING | UNITED STATES

For this outdoor loving couple, it made perfect sense to travel from their home in Houston, Texas, to Jackson Hole, Wyoming and share it's beauty with their friends and family. A June wedding in Texas would have meant battling the stifling heat where as the mountains offered not only a more comfortable climate but exquisite sweeping landscapes and sunsets. Getting married in the great outdoors was inspiration enough for Paige and James, and together with the chirping birds, beautiful aspen trees and running creeks alonside dirt paths, everything came together for a perfect spring day amongst nature.

"Once a month James and I take turns planning a date that is more unique and different than the usual dinner and a movie, something we have never tried before. April of 2011 was James’ month and he planned a scavenger hunt for me. The scavenger hunt took me all across Stillwater, Oklahoma and around campus at OSU. Little did I know what he was up to. The whole event was quite a show. Oklahoma, notorious for its strong winds had 60 mph winds that day making my hunt for clues comical. I ended up going to our favorite places around town and it ultimately led me to my last clue on library lawn on campus. I was so excited that I had found the clue and that I was getting my prize - James! As I walk up to library lawn no one was in sight, a rarity for campus I’m sure due to the wind, and I see a blanket with two dozen yellow roses and one red rose but no James. I read the last clue and as I finish it says “turn around.” I turn to find James walking towards me finally! He took me back to the blanket and started reading scripture to me from 1st Corinthians. It wasn’t until halfway through the scripture that I even knew what was happening."

"OUR WEDDING CEREMONY WAS OUT IN A FIELD ON A PROPERTY AT SNAKE RIVER RANCH. BECAUSE WE WERE OUT IN THE OPEN IT WAS DIFFICULT FOR JAMES NOT TO SEE ME COMING FROM AFAR BEFORE WE COULD SEE ONE ANOTHER’S FACES. TO KEEP THAT MOMENT SPECIAL TO THE TWO OF US, I HID BEHIND AN OLD DOOR WE HAD PROPPED UP. JAMES HAD HIS BACK TOWARDS ALL THE GUESTS ALLOWING HIM TO TURN AND FACE ME AT THE RIGHT MOMENT. THIS ALLOWED ME TO HAVE MORE OF AN ENTRANCE TO THE CEREMONY AND MORE IMPORTANTLY TO GIVE US OUR SPECIAL MOMENT OF ME WALKING TOWARDS MY GROOM AND OUR FUTURE!

"James and I are very close to our families and were saddened that a few of our loved ones were unable to be with us on our wedding day. In order to incorporate and include everyone we found an assortment of vintage style picture frames and compiled a group of black and white photos of our deceased grandparents in their youth. We also had a table displaying the wedding photos of our parents and grandparents. I loved seeing them all laid out together representing our families, where we have come from, and how we are becoming one. We decided to use our money in different means for our party favours for our guests. We decided to donate money to an organization on behalf of all of our guests. The money we would have spent on party reception favours went to provide clean water for villages in Africa. This allowed us to provide a gift to something we are passionate about and also include our families and friends in the process."

"It was just us soaking in the moment

wishing it would never end."

"I would have to say my favourite moments were when James read his vows to me, as well as our f irst dance. As he read his vows, it was so raw. Utterly beautiful to be able to see his feelings for me and his promises to me, as a wife and partner in crime. For those two moments, the vows and our dance, everyone else vanished. It was just us soaking in the moment wishing it would never end, floating on the dance floor and completely wrapped up with one another. I will always cherish those moments, and remember them as a fairytale."

magnolia rouge Once the cake's been eaten and the confetti swept away, there's no need to abandon the love affair with pretty details and beautiful photography that started with your wedding. This issue we're delighted to debut our new Magnolia Rouge Lifestyle section, with inspiring ideas for travel, entertaining with friends, and creating special moments with family.

photography by nordica sundance guest ranch | BRITISH COLUMBIA, canada

Cole & Jacob captured this timeless account of Amber & Bryan's love story and relationship at their 'happy place'; on their ranch just outside of Ashcroft in the vast interior of British Columbia, Canada. Taking a unique approach to the more typically seen engagement shoots, the boys from Nordica aim to capture each couple in their element, doing something or being somewhere that is meaningful to them and their story. They've termed it a "Document You" session and it does exactly that. Whether you both like to hang out at the beach, or at a bar it's about showing your true selves. No posy shots here.

One evening when out on a routine horse ride after work, Bryan steered Amber slightly off their usual course and led her to a look out on a bluff called Twin Pines, just as the evening sky was beginning to change colour. After dismounting to give the horses a well-deserved break, Bryan proposed on bended knee with his Great Grandmother's engagement ring. He had very thoughtfully stashed a blanket, red wine and a picnic dinner in the shade of a tree which they then continued to enjoy in view of the setting sun and the valley below them. Riding back to the barn in the quiet of twilight topped off a perfect evening.

APPLES & OATS FOOD STYLING BY ON MY HAND PHOTOGRAPHY BY GRETA KENYON

THIS IS A BEAUTIFUL EARTHY, RUSTIC DESSERT THAN CAN BE WHIPPED UP USING PANTRY STAPLES. THE BASICS BEING OATS, BUTTER, SUGAR, FLOUR AND APPLES. IT'S WHOLESOME AND NATURAL WHICH MAKES IT ALL THE MORE NOURISHING. PYRAMID SALT IS WHAT MY PARTNER AND I LIKE TO CALL MALDON SEA SALT AS THE SALT CRYSTALS ARE SHAPED LIKE TINY PYRAMIDS (MOST ARE BROKEN UP IN THE PACKET BUT EVERY NOW AND THEN YOU STUMBLE ACROSS A PERFECT MINI PYRAMID). MALDON SEA SALT HAS A FAR SUPERIOR FLAVOUR TO STANDARD TABLE SALT. TRY IT AND YOU WILL SEE. BUTTER IS ANOTHER KEY INGREDIENT. IT'S USED IN ALL THREE ELEMENTS (CRISPS, APPLE SLICES AND CARAMEL) AND PROVIDES RICHNESS AS WELL AS BOTH CREAMINESS AND CRISPNESS.

CRISPY OAT & APPLE STACK

with Pyramid Salt Caramel

RECIPE BY DANIELLE FROM SPONGEDROP

80g unsalted butter, softened . 45g sugar . 30g plain flour . 1/4 tsp cinnamon 1 tsp Heilala vanilla . 1/4 tsp Maldon Sea Salt . 75g rolled oats 2 x Granny Smith apples . Butter and brown sugar for sprinkling . Cream to serve Heat the oven to 180°C. Line two trays with baking paper. Mix first seven ingredients together in a bowl until combined. Scoop large teaspoons of dough and press into a flattish round on the baking paper. Continue until all dough is used, spacing each crisp around 6cm apart so they have room to spread. Bake for 15mins or until golden. Cool on the tray briefly then transfer to a rack. To make the apple slices, slice apples into thin rounds, place on trays lined with baking paper, brush with melted butter and sprinkle with a little brown sugar. Bake in the oven for 30mins, turning slices after 15mins. They will be soft and sticky. To serve, stack slices of apple with the oat crisps, drizzle with the warm caramel and runny cream. SALTED CARAMEL (MAKES 1 CUP)

2 tbsps golden syrup . 1/3 cup cream . 1 tbsp butter, room temp Squeeze of lemon juice . 1/2 tsp Heilala vanilla . 1/2 - 3/4 tsp Maldon Sea Salt 220g white sugar .

Place the sugar and golden syrup into a saucepan and, without stirring, melt over a medium heat. You will start to smell the sugar caramelising. Once you see the sugar melting, gently stir with a wooden spoon. The sugar may look pebbly but keep going; it will melt down. Once all the sugar is melted continue cooking until it turns a rich, deep bronze colour and is a little smoky. Remove the saucepan from the heat and very carefully (watch for spitting, bubbling caramel!) pour in half the cream and stir to combine. You may need to put it back over the heat if the caramel seizes a little. Stir in the rest of the cream and add the butter, lemon juice, vanilla extract and salt to taste. If you’re not sure about the salt, start with a little then add more as you please. Pour into a heatproof container and cool. Keeps in the fridge for a week.

AEL JERUSALEM - ISR Jerusalem is full of significant historical, religious and educational sites, and although you will have been exposed to it in the media, your first glimpse inside the ancient walled city will leave you speechless. More than beautiful, however, Jerusalem is a spiritual centre, holy to the three great monotheistic faiths, Judaism, Christianity and Islam. The Western ("Wailing") Wall is one of Israel's biggest tourist attractions. At all hours of the day or night, visitors stream to the Wall to pray, to take photographs, to participate in a demonstration or an army swearing-in ceremony, to attend a Bar Mitzva or just to absorb some of the historic and spiritual atmosphere that permeates the ancient site.

WHERE TO EAT SPLURGE MAHANYUDA

SAVE FOCCACIA BAR

One of the most talked about Restaurants in Israel right now is Mahanyuda in Jerusalem. Known for it's fantastic fresh food, very open kitchen and fun atmosphere it sources all it's ingredients from the city's famed Mahane Yehuda marketplace. Book in advance if you can and don't be at all surprised if your waiter spontaneously bursts into song.

You'll probably want to stay away if you're after a romantic evening for two but with it's own unique charm this dependable establishment is a reliable option for weary travellers when you just need a good meal with no hassles. Try the Hatzil Baladi - smoked eggplant with tahini and tomatoes served on a billowy flat bread.

WHERE TO STAY SPLURGE MAMILLA HOTEL

SAVE YMCA

A visually stunning example of intimate, sophisticated contemporary design. Mamilla Hotel is one the finest in Jerusalem. Located in the heart of the City, alongside Jerusalem's new shopping and entertainment experience the Alrov Mamilla Avenue, with its magnificent views of the Old City walls, the Tower of David and Jaffa Gate, the Mamilla Hotel is the very heart of Jerusalem's rich cultural heritage and bustling day life and is a leading luxury hotel in Jerusalem.

Whilst the rooms may be humble and in need of a renovation, the location of this internationally known chain hotel, is very central being just one block from the Old City and a ten minute walk to Ben Yehuda Street. Moreover the historic building itself is beautiful with it's Byzantine arcitecture and elegant public areas. With a well equipped gym, sauna, swimming pool and restaurant with great service, it's the perfect spot if you're looking for value for money.

TRAVEL TIP If the weather turns, the Israel Museum is a great place to wile away a few hours, especially if you have little ones to occupy!

HAVANA - CUBA As the Caribbean’s largest and most vivacious city, Havana is a one-off. Its romantic atmosphere and infectious energy are the stuff of legend. Over 500 years of roller-coaster history have conspired to create one of Latin America’s most electric and culturally unique societies. Not exactly a conventional beauty, amid the warm crystalline waters of the sparkling Caribbean you'll find crumbling tenements and increasingly traffic-clogged streets but this all adds to the charm that lures you in and captivates you. A large part of Havana’s attraction lies in the visceral and the abstract. Wander through the neighbourhoods to get a true sense of the place. While 50 years of Socialism have taken their toll on Habana’s fragile social and economic fabric, the indomitable spirit of its citizens is a constant source of inspiration.

TRAVEL TIP Try to stay with locals where you can. It'll offer you a richer experience and an opportunity to learn more about this unique country.
