In a twist of fate, or touch of inspiration, our Vintage article from December 2012 recalled the essential role of this female icon of design and artistic freedom of expression, who revolutionized the creative codes in force in 1972. Tributes made to Andrée Putman upon her passing were many, sober, and lacking in commentary. The laconic AFP wire story recalled that Andrée Putman “was known for her clean, elegant, timeless style.” True, but that’s a rather brief way to summarize sixty years dedicated to creation and design that was without borders, generous, authentic, nonconformist, and passionate. Left in the wake of the woman who declared herself to be “impressed by those artists who seek nothing more than to remain in the heart of their sincerity, of their risk,” we find the successes of people, like Jean-Charles de Castelbajac, Issey Miyake, or Thierry Mugler, but also Christofle, Vuitton, Pleyel, Veuve Cliquot, Guerlain, a few restored major monuments, and a ton of little interiors. After traveling the world over, and leaving her mark on New York, Hong Kong, Shanghai, Munich, Tokyo, and of course, Paris, in the end it was in the same Sixth Arrondissement of Paris, where Andrée Purtman was born, that she took her final breath. It was a life that leaves behind a great, full, indelible proof of a masterful talent. “My only concern was to tell myself if I interest at least ten people, I will have accomplished something that will carry me my whole life,” she declared at the start of her career. It was a mission accomplished in spades. Friso Kramer

A Dutch designer born in 1922, Friso Kramer is the son of architect Piet Kramer. He played a significant role in the development of Holland's national style, from the 1940s to today. His ideas have constantly help to drive the modern Dutch esthetic. Friso Kramer began his career as an industrial designer in 1948 with De Cirkel, maker of steel furniture. In the 1950s, he was part of the " Goed Wonen " (Good Living) group, dedicated to restoring or reestablishing the quality of life in the war-torn country. In 1953, he created the " Revolt Chair " for Ahrend, a popular icon of the new Dutch style presented at the Triennale di Milano in 1954. Now, at the age of 90, Friso Kramer is very much in the news in the Netherlands. In late November, the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam paid homage to him, and Yvonne Brentjens' book, " De Stoel van Friso Kramer / Friso Kramer’s Chair " has just been reissued in English and in Dutch.The exhibition at Catherine Houard Gallery with " Friso Kramer REVOLT ," Catherine Houard presents the first exhibition in Paris dedicated to the master of Dutch Design, Friso Kramer, in honor of his 90th birthday. A Parisian by birth, Laura Gonzalez grew up in Cannes. She loves art, sculpture, photography, and painting, which naturally led her to to the Beaux-Arts School of Architecture, where she received her degree. But it was in various Beijing architecture firms where she learned her craft. In her fourth year, she did a favor for a friend who owns a little concept store for men. This first project was a success, a real springboard. She then decided to start her own business. 35 projects in 1 year, including the cult favorite Bus Palladium, a landmark of Parisian nightlife. From there, her rise was dazzling, and the media can't stop talking about her. She has 180 projects in 3 years under her belt... at the tender age of 28. Laura loves her job and never stops...Today, she switches styles and breathes life into modern design with an invigorating freshness, and with astonishing ease. Laura likes her decors to have a history, a connecting thread.Thus she decided, once we were barely inside the showroom, to transport us to the top of the world, to a tent on a Himalayan summit. Teresa Sapey is an Italian architect whose studio is located in Madrid, in the heart of a former Flamenco school. Attracting a great deal of attention following the VIP ARca 2012 show in collaboration with Ikea, hailed as " Miss Parking " by Jean Nouvel, trained by Jacques Garcia and Alberto Pinto, Teresa stands out from the contemporary architectural landscape through her use of color and the shapes she uses to breath dynamism and sensuality into her projects.

After years of futuristic and designer decoration, when the the world was adorned with the practical and ergonomic, decoration in 1973 announced the return of pure, sensory, esthetic pleasures. The lack of the beautiful, and useless, echoed in far-off horizons, where ornamentation is an art: China. Utility, solidity, and‌ sensuality Pierre DEBEAUX, in the video presented opposite, cites the three ancient foundations of Vitruvian architecture: utilitas, firmitas, voluptas, which translate to utility, solidity, and esthetics. He regrets the diversion of the third concept, voluptas, today substituted by the idea of form, thus supplanting the need for joy, play, and esthetic pleasure. Sensuality is not limited to the visual, it involves all senses, and even less the notion of form which, if harmonious, does not lead to creativity or rejoicing for all that.

While those years were invaded with a profusion of colors, Chinese design favors simplicity in this area, with the use of few colors (black, red, gold) associated with the colors of natural materials. Far from simplicity and ergonomics, Chinese art is tinged with finesse and precision. 73 The art of ornamentation Chinese-style Light, soft, easy to cut and transport, silk is the favored medium for Chinese compositions. Painting on silk, dating back to 476 BC, originally served to decorate calligraphy artwork. The decorative creations would be hung on walls. They could depict a poem; this is a calligraphy, adorned with a painting, a dragon combined with its calligraphy symbol, or horses, bamboo, flowers, and birds, which are the preferred decorative themes of the Chinese. Chinese paper lanterns, highly prized in Western interiors, originally served to simply protect candles from blowing out and to diffuse their light more evenly.
They would then become a medium for artistic creations. The most well-known are red, oval, adorned with golden pompons. Used during festivities or to decorate palaces, they evoke rare, precious moments.
An art of exotic and natural refinement Exotic refinement decorates everyday objects. Chinese silks, finely embroidered by hand, represent landscapes, flowers, and animals, and adorn clothing or sheer curtains used in homes. Painted porcelain, known in the west for holding sake, and also lacquer ware, became trendy in 1973 and found a home in modern interiors. Natural, Chinese lacquer is a resin, heated and liquefied in order to be applied to wood.Lacquer can be dyed or mixed with gold powder, carved plates, mother-ofpearl, pearl, or feathers. Lacquer can be found on furniture, jewelry boxes, and decorative plates. In order to complete the change and confirm exoticism indoors, warm and exotic natural materials replace cold materials like plastic and steel. Fabric, wood, rattan, bamboo, and wicker find a special place in decoration.

Some greenery… A peaceful, green corner, who wouldn’t dream about having one on their property? In the city or in the country, people are no longer hesitating to design a little green space. Nothing but happiness, even if you just have a few square meters. The essential thing is to have a bit of space to recharge your batteries after a hard workday, all while sheltered from the view of passers-by. If you are lucky enough to have a courtyard, a lawn, a few deck chairs, an umbrella, and some lamps to light up the garden at night are enough to create a pleasant space for relaxing.

Choosing Materials‌ When you have room to spare in your courtyard, it is definitely a pleasure to arrange it according to your taste and desire. Essential for being able to walk around outside, paths can be made of various materials. The simplest way is to plant grass, cut it regularly, between trees, shrubs, or little flower beds.

Andrée Putman’s style is both easily identifiable and undefinable. It is a representation of luxury which, according to her, is expressed in the strict minimum, but very beautifully. A natural harmony, as if everything had found its place at last, comes out of her interiors.

Complete spaces that can take on the In her esthetic approach, Andrée Putman wanted to achieve “omnipresence of disappearance.” She decorated the overloaded with her spareness, but her creations were not uncluttered. She searched for the right line, the design of a complete space, obvious to those who visit it or live there. Simple in her choices, what she liked, she followed her intuition and handled diversion in such a way that her compositions, even unconventional ones, seem to have always been this way. She wanted everyone “to be less afraid of errors of taste.” She combined the essential: order, the choice of surprising materials, and light. “Spaces, light,
materials, and colors are some kind of writing. Light outlines spaces. I love the magical effect when it is filtered.” Andrée Putman did not think of herself as a decorator. She did not impose a definite style, but drew the portrait of the future occupants of the spaces she designed. An admirer of human sensibilities, creative personalities, she left color to the artists. A beautiful interior develops the minds of its inhabitants; it is adorned in black, white, grey, blue or beige, with the last two tones borrowed from nature. At the Gildo Pastor Center in Monaco, she imagined a stairway shaped like a necklace, for the hostess.

A very personal definition of luxury… Born in 1925, her father was a graduate of the Ecole Normale Superieur who spoke seven languages, and her mother was a concert pianist, and Andrée Putman grew up in a demanding, artistic environment. She acquired the strictness and precision of perception. Her mother wanted her to have the career she had dreamed about for herself. In her childhood years, she dedicated her time to studying the piano and to attending concerts. When she was told in 1948, after receiving First Harmony Prize from the National Conservatory of Paris, that she would have to dedicate ten years of her life if she wanted to become a composer, she decided to end her career as a pianist, and became a messenger for Femina magazine. Luxury, the demand for beauty and quality, would stay with her throughout her career, but, free to make
her choices, autonomously, she gave it her own personal definition: “Luxury, for a designer, is also this free mood that makes it possible to get rid of the signs presented as the archetypes of luxury, in order to prepare a free and individual blend as precious as it will always be unique.” At the Blue Spa, Andrée Putman designed a sports, fitness, and spa center at the top of Munich’s Bayerischer Hof Hotel. She designed an open-air swimming pool, with a retractable cover, where the play of golden light intensified the depth of the International Klein Blue. Large, twisted lamps rise up along the poolside, like gods and goddesses. Mosaics in blue, black, and gold glass sparkle and make the light come alive. For Guerlain, she renovated a registered Haussmann building, which she adorned with modernity and elegant light.

Renewing codes… Andrée Putman spent many years designing for silversmith Christofle, who wanted to renew its style codes. Their collaboration began with a ring. A symbol of memory, it would guide the entire line of jewelry, cutlery, and objects. Round, simple white shapes left room for reminiscing when tasting a hot chocolate. The pieces designed, with their perfect proportions and impeccable materials, evoke the sensuality of simple beauty. Here again, there was no room for unnecessary flourishes. When Andrée Putman was asked to design an ashtray, she created a simple
white saucer, “to keep the ashes from falling, and so you don’t take yourself too seriously.” Joyful, sensitive to happiness, Andrée Putman revolutionized the lives of the residents of the homes she designed, offering them a free vision of space utilization. For one private client in Spain, she imagined a place of shadows and light. A dark alcove for a bedroom, a living room with indirect lighting, and a kitchen and bathroom bathed in light. The bathroom, dear in the artist’s eyes, evoked the sensuality of Greco-Roman baths.

Between break-up and reconciliation, the hand For luxury hotels, Andrée Putman did not seek to reproduce a home away from home, but rather a separate place, with a unique soul, that you are pleased to discover, and rediscover, precisely because it is totally different from home. “The hotels that I design want to attract a clientele that is modern, spoiled, sensitive to style, open to innovation, and ready for a completely new experience.” Beyond designing spaces, An-
drée Putman made sure that everything was perfect in the hotels she put her name to. The service, discrete, attentive but translating personality, the morning sunbeams to awake the guests, many towels in the bathroom, every detail had to come together in order to complete her creation. Between break-up and continuity, Andrée Putman created the precise balance between well-being and discovery.

Zoom… The Grand Dame, as she was sometimes known, lived her life like an artwork. Incredibly styled, refined, dressed in custom-made clothes by Azzedine Alaïa or Yves Saint Laurent, often in black, she stood upright, haughty, and had a sensitive, intense outlook on life. Art and the art of living were one and the same to her. Through her creations, her beautiful, correct way of speaking, she delivered us this formula, tinged with philosophy and inviting everyone to free, spontaneous expression: "What is style? She renewed the connection between elsewhere and tradition in 2008, by creating the Voie Lactée (Milky Way) piano for Pleyel, a highly symbolic piece tied to her mother’s past. The interior of the cover presents the Milky Way she was so fond of, painted on a background of International Klein Blue. The black and white checkerboard left her personal imprint, the Putman hand, present, superb, on the piano.

Maximizing a small space by Philippe Demougeot… After receiving his degree in Political Science in Lyon, and one from the Ecole Boulle in 1988, Philippe Demougeot joined the Ecole Nationale Supérieure d’Architecture (ENSA) at Paris La Villette under the direction of architect/urban planner Roland Castro. After graduating in 1995, it was off to China, spending two years in Shanghai where he designed many apartment buildings, stores, restaurants, and village halls. When he returned to France, he opened his own architecture and interior design firm. Despite its decrepit "before" appearance, Philippe Demougeot was able to see potential of this small space: great high ceilings (4 meters), depth, and its major asset: a garden-level patio. A rarity in Paris.

height to give it verticality. The bathroom and kitchen were created in a modern spirit, bright and functional. For maximum storage, closets were built above and below the stairs. This new transformation makes this studio a preferred spot in the heart of Paris that is used as a short or long-term pied Ă terre.

A material that is innovative, environmentally-friendly and fire resistant Cématerre is a new construction material that uses clay, lime, and flax fiber for its base. A worldwide innovation, the material and manufacturing process were the brainchild of Alain Lefebvre, designer and director of Lefebvre Industries, a civil-engineering company located in Gonfreville l’Orcher (Seine-Maritime).

It is an earthen construction material that offers great thermal and acoustic insulation properties, but also provides significant resistance in building construction, without any particular limitations. Cématerre makes it possible to build differently, by taking into account current and future environmental issues, such as increasingly-rare resources and raw materials. Cast like concrete using a vibration technique, it represents a genuine innovation in the world of earthen construction. It is used to create load-bearing elements to construct simple buildings with no particular limitation. Unlike traditional earthen construction, Cématerre is cast like concrete. The soil is taken from on or near the jobsite, is blended with other ingredients and stabilized in a mixer that is similar to concrete mixing equipment, adapted for clay. The mixing equipment is located at the jobsite. The material is therefore manufactured on-site, then cast into forms and vibrated (vibrating rods). To compare it to concrete: Cématerre is 3 times more insulating, but 3 times less resistant, which could be compensated for by using walls that are 2 to 3 times thicker. In terms of cost, Cématerre is currently in a price range equivalent to traditional constructions using concrete or other materials, particularly due to savings on transporting raw materials.
