cards

For this issue our team of designers have focused their beyond cards creations on tags and altered items. Each of these projects shows new and creative ways to use Whimsy images, sentiments, and dies! Homemade Strawberry Jam Recipe: Ingredients:

· 500 grams of small strawberries, hulled and washed · 350 grams of castor sugar · Zest and juice of 1/2 lemon · 1 sterilized jam jar Preparation: 1. Place the strawberries, lemon juice, zest and sugar in a large saucepan. Heat over low heat and simmer gently until the sugar dissolves. (Note: Always simmer the fruit and sugar really slowly. This process extracts the fruit's natural pectin.) 2. In a separate saucepan, boil the jam jar for 10 minutes. Once sterilized, remove from heat and dry thoroughly. 3. Once the sugar has dissolved, turn the heat up to medium-high and boil the mixture rapidly for 10-15 minutes, stirring occasionally. 4. Do the ‘wrinkle test’. If jam is ready then remove the saucepan from heat and let it sit for 10 minutes or until the edges of the jam sets slightly. Pour jam into the warm jam jar and then let it cool completely before sealing. 5. If the jam doesn't wrinkle the first time, keep boiling it for another 5 to 10 minutes and then test again. Store the jam in sterilized jam jars for several months.

Jam Jar created by Shannah Bartle; Whimsy Stamps Products: Rubber Stamp “Homemade” by Monika Martinson; Paper: Bazzill Cardstock; Ink / Colouring Medium: Memento Tuxedo Ink , Copics (YG03/63, BG96, RV10/14, R37, Y32, W1); Embellishments: Kaisercraft Snow Pearls, Mounting Foam, Twinery Red Twine, Red Satin Ribbon, Fabric scrap, Uniball Signo Gold Pen; Tools / Other: Pinking Shears, Jar of Homemade Strawberry Jam.

(Wrinkle Test: To check and see if it’s ready or not, place a spoonful of jam on a saucer and put it into the fridge for a minute or two. Touch it with your finger and if it "wrinkles", it's ready. If not, boil it for another 5 or 10 minutes and then check again.)

Productreview If you are like me, a passionate paper crafter, then you are obsessed with papers, especially with 'Designer Papers' (also called patterned papers or background papers). You'll never have enough! I'm mostly a card maker this is why I'm always on the lookout for smaller, tighter patterns / 6x6 papers. This is one of the many reasons why I love the Whimsy Designer Paper range designed by Michele Roos exclusively for Whimsy Stamps. The pattern size is perfect for card making as well as for scrapbooking or other paper projects. The ideally selected, coordinating patterns in each pack sparkle the inspiration. It is always a variety of stripes, dots, flowers/theme related objects, solids, patterns, plaids, etc. in each pack. Each 6x6 paper pack contains 24 sheets (12 designs, two of each design) of high quality, textured vellum paper. The great paper quality makes it a pleasure to work with. They won't soak through if liquid glue is used and the heavy paper also adds to the solidness of cards or other paper projects created. The color palettes used for the Whimsy Designer Papers are amazingly vivid, and brilliant. The surface of the paper is nice and smooth and has a satiny shine to it:

When cutting the papers they won't fray. I've had nice clean cuts each and every time. They are also perfect for distressing due to the stronger paper: I used my electric distressing machine and the paper didn't tear, it distressed nicely. Even when I was forcing it through the machine back and forth to get a heavier distressed look (right side) it was not a problem at all.

Tutorial by Janette Garcia I would like to show how fun it is to cover a whole image with glitter. Using the correct tools you will be able to transform a great image into a brilliantly sparkly one. This technique is super fun; getting all the glitz yet still being able to see the image.

Supplies: ● Colored image ●Scor-Pal double sided adhesive sheets ●Crystal Glitter Ritz - Ultra Fine Glitter ●Die Cut Machine (optional)

1 Step 1: First you will need to cut down the adhesive sheet to your colored image size.

© Whimsy Stamps Inspirations Magazine

2 Step 2: Next, remove one of the protective sides (brown). Be careful not to touch too much of the adhesive; and lay it on top of the colored image. Rub firmly so that you avoid air bubbles.

58

July 2013, Issue 13

4 3 Step 3 and 4: *Optional- Die cut your image. The image is visible through the white protective sheet. This makes it possible to align the image.

5

6

Step 5: Remove the white protective sheet. You are left with an extra glossy image completely covered in adhesive.

7

Step 6: Next, working over a sheet of paper pile on the glitter. It is important to use a translucent glitter. Glitter Ritz is perfect for this technique. I empty about 2/3 of the jar. Most of it will be going back into the container so there is no need to hold back

Step 7 and 8: Now you will begin to rub in circles with your finger. (Burnishing) Once you have rubbed (burnished) the entire image you can tap off any excess

Š Whimsy Stamps Inspirations Magazine

8 59

July 2013, Issue 13

Step 9: You can now fold your paper to funnel the glitter back into the container.

9 10

Step 10 and 11: The finished result is a colored image burnished with glitter. It is hard to capture on picture but it is quite pretty.

Tutorial by Iris Wiechmann In this coloring tutorial I like to show you my way to color skin with violet shades. I use violet for skin when I want deeper, more prominent shadows. I also think it gives the skin a more natural live-like look. There are many different color combinations for skin and the skin colors I chose for todays tutorial are E000, E00, E21 and BV00 for deep shadows. I also use the colorless blender. Usually I use more colors but for demonstrating purposes it is easier with just these 3 skin colors plus one for shadows. The image is from Whimsy's Kenny K collection called 'Tex' and just perfect for a skin coloring tutorial as it has lots of skin to color. The ink I used for stamping the image is Memento Tuxedo Black (dye ink) and the paper I used is X-press It! The X-press It paper is one of my favorites for coloring with alcohol markers. I like the great blending capabilities of the very smooth surface and that it can take up a lot of color before it gets over saturated and starts bleeding over the lines. This is important if you color using lots of layers.

Step 1: I start with my lightest color, E000. This will be also my highlight color. Usually I like to have some uncolored areas (or almost uncolored) for highlights but not for the skin. I think this just doesn't look natural. In this case where there is a lot of skin to color I start with a small part of skin. Focus on this area first and then go on to the next. This is important as alcohol markers blend best when wet. The alcohol based markers don't stay wet as long as e.g. water based markers. The alcohol in the markers evaporates faster. To keep the paper moist you have to work fairly quick and on smaller areas. I saturate the paper with my lightest color it is also my base skin color. You can do circle motions or kind of flicking strokes whatever you like best. I personally never do circles, just don't like it too much. I always do light flicking strokes.

Š Whimsy Stamps Inspirations Magazine

1

61

July 2013, Issue 13

2

Step 2: With my next darker color, E00, I mark where the shadows in his face naturally will be with the light coming more from the front/right side. In this step I don't use too much color, just do more like marking where the shadow areas will be. Step 3: I then go in with my E000 again and slightly blend/smooth out the colors. For blending I also always use light flicking strokes.

3 4

Step 4: Now that I know where I want my shadows I use my darkest skin color to add more color to these areas. I always work light handed just with the tip of my marker.

6

5 Step 5: I blend out the harsh lines using first E00 and than E000. Always only blend the lines don't go over the whole darker area with a lighter marker too often as this will fade out your darker color pretty quickly.

Step 6: Let the image dry slightly before you add your violet color.

Then just light handed add the violet shade to the darkest areas. Do you see how it makes the image pop? You can leave it like it is with the harsh lines or blend in very carefully with flicking strokes just the outer lines of the BV00 color using E00. I'm not a fan of these harsh shadow lines so I slightly blended it in (you can see that on the next picture). I prefer to have more like a violet tinted shade. But this is all a matter of personal preference. Š Whimsy Stamps Inspirations Magazine

62

July 2013, Issue 13

7 Step 7: Very carefully I blended in the BV00 with my E00

marker. Now go to your next area and start again with E000 first to saturate the paper in that area and then marking the shadow areas with E00 and blend again with E000.

8

9 Step 8 and 9: Blending everything with E00 and E000

carefully and avoid not to take off too much color with your lightest marker.

10 11 Step 10: Let dry slightly and add the violet shade again with BV00. Going back in with E00 and E000 if desired to blend.

Step 11: In this manner continue coloring the rest of the skin. To have a little break from all the skin color I went ahead and colored the rest of the image for a little change. You can see I still have parts of his body to color. For the jeans I used B91, B93, B95 and B97. The hat and the chaps are colored with E40, E41, E42, E43, E44. For his gloves and hat band I used browns from the E30's range. Hair and all other gray/silver parts are cool

Here is the finished image, ready to be used on a project. As a final step I used the colorless blender and went over the highlight areas carefully to make them even a bit brighter. I hope you liked my skin coloring tutorial with violet shades and that I could give you some useful tips and inspired you to give it a try.

Animal Texture Tutorial by Tammy Louise Cunliffe Copic markers can blend colors beautifully for images that portray human images, nature scenes as well as animals. Today I’m coloring the “You Moove Me” cow image by the Whimsy Artist Crissy Armstrong. The image is drawn in a cute almost quilt like manner, so the color choices are entirely open and don’t require a realistic style. The creation of the look of texture and design on a cows hide can also be created with the Copic ink. Let’s get started with the basic coloring then with the same colors, add some texture dots to the more shadowed areas!

Step 2: Use G21 directly under the cow to create the darkest areas and keep the ink tight up to the outline of the animal and grass, then pull the G21 outward with G20 and repeat this until you’re happy with the look.

2

1

Step 1: Cryogen paper with Momento Tuxedo Black ink starts the base of the project. I use G20 under the cow first to determine the areas where I plan to darken the ground the most.

3 © Whimsy Stamps Inspirations Magazine

64

Step 3: Choosing E04, E21, E000 and E0000 for the hide color, starting from the lowest edge of the legs, belly, tail, neck and behind the legs in the areas of shadow, use E04.

July 2013, Issue 13

Steps 4 through 7: Then blend it out with E21 then E000 and finally E0000 into the center of the image, one small section at a time.

4 6

5 7

Step 8: Continue to color in the darker to lighter fashion but when the area is small, I color the entire area, such as the bow, first with Y21 and moving from the shadow areas and the edges of the section inward toward the center with Y26.

8 Š Whimsy Stamps Inspirations Magazine

65

July 2013, Issue 13

9

Step 9: Repeat the coloring from center and at edges toward the center of the section with a smaller stroke outward and very close to the line with Y38. Then to blend the colors, pull the darkest out with the medium color and do the same pulling the medium color out with the lightest color toward the center of the section. Step 10: Choose three more colors for the patches and utter and in order to create a dimensional look here, I’ve used the darkest color (RV34) in a tiny almost dotted stroke at the inside of the line, pulled it into the center with the medium color (RV32) again with a very small stroke and blended the color toward the center with the lightest color (RV00) almost leaving a white section in the center and used a 0 colorless blender to smooth the edges.

11 Step 11: For the nose and utter sections I colored the outer edge with R20 for a rosy but fleshy look

13

10 12 Step 12: I blended the R20 out with the R30 inward in circles for a small section that needed to look like skin

Step 14: The bell needs to be more yellow and red for a bronze look. I used YR00 to cover the bell, then YR24 from the top left of the bell to the right so that the bell has the light section where it is less under the head of the cow

14

Step 13:The utter is completed the same way with R20 and R30 with more of the R20 at the top of the utter really close to the cow’s belly Š Whimsy Stamps Inspirations Magazine

66

July 2013, Issue 13

16

Step 16: E04 was used in a thin stroke at the image lines for shadowing

15

Step 15: The face is covered with E000 first and E21 from the outer edges inward leaving the center (eye area) in E000

Step 17: E21 was used to pull the E04 toward the center in small strokes

17 18

Step 18: E000 was used to pull the E21 inward and blend the colors and the ears were done by pulling the darkest color out from where they connect to the head to the tip ending in E0000 at the tip

21

Step 21: When the basic coloring is completed, I’ve used the E04,E21,E000 and E0000 to add tiny dots that add texture. The E04 is closest to the image line under the belly, at the hoof line, the top and bottom of the tail and on the side of the face. Put E21, E000 and E0000 dots moving slightly toward the center of the belly, legs, tail and face. 67

Altered Cans

Tutorial by Janette Garcia

Are you the type of person that saves packaging because you are already imagining a project? Well; let me tell you that I have about 20 baby formula cans that I have saved to make into something pretty. The day has come and I will be altering a couple of cans into a neat pencil holders. Supplies Needed: ● Can- any size ● Designer papers ● Adhesive - wet foam squares ● Colored image

Step 1: First you will need to strip off any label that the can has. Once stripped and cleaned then you can add your designer paper. I have measured my size by putting the paper on the can; marking the

Next, I have wrapped bakers twine around the body of my can (this will be part of the design); and some bling towards the bottom. For a much neater look; you can add rows of twine towards the top and bottom of the can. I like adding the twine to help the paper stay in place.

Step 2: My 12inch paper doesn’t cover all the way around. So I will add a strip of reverse (coordinating) paper. I like adhering the paper with wet adhesive making sure to go right to the edges so that it gets glued down snuggly.

4

Step 4: It is helpful to bend the image before adding it to the can. This will help the image curve with the can and not stick out

3

5

Step 5: I have used foam squares to give the image some dimension.

Step 6: I have completed my cans by adding names, banners, and sentiments.

airbrushed

clouds

Tutorial by Janette Garcia I thought I would share my favorite way to make clouds for my cards. I saw a tutorial from Bev Rochester and thought it would be fun to do the same technique using my Copic airbrush system. Supplies: ● Airbrush System ● Copic Markers ● Cloud Template

1

Step 1: First you must make your template. Bev has a printable one HERE that you can print and trim.I have made the second one by using cloud cutouts and gluing them to a strip of paper. You could even make your own. Bev’s Template Link: http://bevscrafts.blogspot.com/2011/06/clouds -template.html

2

Step 2: It is a good idea to protect your workspace with a paper or nonstick mat. I place the template towards the top of the paper and spray using short bursts of air. I like to start spraying on my template and then move onto the paper so that I do not have harsh bursts of ink.

3

Step 3: Next, move your template down and shift to either left or right. This is important because you do not want your clouds to be identical rows. Alternate sides and even tilt the template a bit to get a more natural end result.

4

Step 4: I like to focus the ink in the dips in the clouds. When shifting your template down you must leave room in between layers. The white area(covering with template) is your cloud area. If you do not leave any white then your clouds will not be defined.

These clouds are so fun and quick. I love how soft and airy the result is.

Step 1: Cut stock paper to the same dimension of your card face

Step 2: Choose your favorite Washi tapes and begin covering your stock topper starting from one of the short edges (butting up evenly to each new tape design) all the way up to the end of the topper.

3 Step 3: Turn your topper over and fold under any of the remaining tape for that finished look

4 Step 4: Divide the length of your cards short side by 4 even sections and use your cutter to make 4 even strips. My card is 4.5” so my strips are 1 1/6” each.

7

Step 5: Turn every other one upside down to miss match your design and create your weaved look.

6

Step 7: I covered the top and bottom edge with a coordinating tape to unify the design, but this is also not a necessity.

Step 6: I adjusted the strip a bit and added a pink strip matching my one tape design all the way through, but this is not mandatory, it just turned out that I liked the way it looks. Glue these strips to the card base, cut any excess off from the short edges

8

Step 8: Cut slits for the ribbon in the seam of your card with a straight blade

9 Step 9: Use your choice of die now, I’ve used the Lock and Key Shapeology die from Whimsy stamps, ran it through my Cuttlebug 8 times with regular stock paper, then one more with glitter paper for texture. Š Whimsy Stamps Inspirations Magazine

Step 11: Your die cut is not a 3 dimensional embellishment!

10

Step 10: Brush liquid glue onto each layer gently with a brush (being sure to line up the Die cuts. Ending with the glitter cut on top! Allow to dry over night.

13 12

Step 13: Then mainly around the edges and some on the glittered pattern on the top, add the Vintage Photo Distress stain to where the key will look aged.

Step 12: Cover the entire key front and back with Distress Stain, I’ve used Spun Sugar so the key will not only have an aged vintage look but will be more feminine

14 Step 14: For the final touches, some radiant rain twinkling H20 gold on the edges will give the key a rich metallic look. Š Whimsy Stamps Inspirations Magazine

15 Step 15: Because of the glittered design of the DP on top, the stains will be lighter in the glittered areas. This adds texture and romance to your embellishment.

Step 16: Assemble your embellishments onto your card and don’t skimp on the silky ribbon!
