01 BRISTOL NATURAL ZEN DOJO Sustainable design: human and nature in harmonious coexistence Location: St.Werburghs City Farm, Bristol, United Kingdom Type of work:Academic Time: March-June 2020 INDIVIDIAL WORK Gain the inspiration from vertical farm and the Japanese Zen drawing, I tried to create a Zen Dojo that combines human, Buddhism and naturae together, and brings the oriental and mysterious atmosphere into Bristol. Both Japanese traditional and also modern architects would like to use special landscapes in dojo as a way to attract members, and let monks feel calm and peaceful at the same time. In this project, I try to discuss the boundary of living space and landscape, and balance the historical theme to fit in the modern context.

2

Client Requirment

The role of plants in Zen Drawing

Build a dedicated DOJO to accommodate a minimum of 30 practitioners (including teachers), a residential component for 4 permanent monks/nuns and a small office to carry on their works. Respect the privacy of monks and design a space for well communication.

Viewing

Monks and visitors can both enjoy the view which named karesansui ( かれさんすい ).

Sitting & Laying

Plants in Zen drawing and Zen dojo play the role of the natural 'furniture'.

Buddhism Development Timeline

Dividing

Just as the Zen drawing shows, instead of using wall, plants, as the natural screen is more suitable for dojo

Creating atmosphere

Japanese traditional dojo always use conifer to create a quiet and stately atmosphere.

Understanding

As mentioned in 'Zen-the love of nature', monks can gain the Buddha Dharma by experiencing the grown.

This project aims to resonate with visitors’ emotion by several architectural objects based on the film-Blade Runner. The psychological transformation of the main character-Decard will be the foundation of the whole design, and these key moments will be transformed to architectural expression.

2 Decard's emtion- Regret

3 Decard's emtion- Love Decard and Rachael started to full in love with each other.

Decard was forced to cancel his retirement and chase these runaway replicant without choice.

Their relationship included love, afraid and hate.

Decard started to feel confuse about the edge of people and replicants while chasing Zora and witnessed the tear of this replicant.

The broken display window represented Decard’s feeling, and he started to consider.

4 Decard's emtion- Panic

5 Decard's emtion- Respect Roy Decard

At the life-and-death situation, Roy saved Decard and his life began to count down. The conversation has deeply impacted Decard. Though Roy is a replicant, his thought is respectful.

6 Decard's emtion- Self-doubt

?

Roy and Decard started chasing and hiding in the building. They run up and down stairs. Decard started to selfref lection and explored the real personality under the inspiration of Roy's words.

03 Riverside Organic Market Location: Grangetown, Cardiff, United Kingdom Type of work: Academic Time: March-June 2019 INDIVIDIAL WORK Cardiff citizens strated to find lots of unconvenient of riverside outdoor market. So it is a time to replace the previous riverside market. People increasingly get used of fast food which may cause healty problems. This orgainc market will show the progress of food growing, processing while changing their daily lifestyle habits and breaking old habits and create healthy new ones.

13

Context Analysis

Riverside Market Statement Nearly two-thirds of adults (63%) in UK were classed as being overweight (a body mass index of over 25) or obese (a BMI of over 30) in 2015. In UK, the proportion who were categorised as obese increased from 13.2% of men in 1993 to 26.9% in 2015 and from 16.4% of women in 1993 to 26.8% in 2015. The rate of increase has slowed down since 2001, although the trend is still upwards.

The Foresight report states that while achieving and maintaining calorie balance is a consequence of individual decisions about diet and activity, our environment, and particularly the availability of calorie-rich food, now makes it much harder for individuals to maintain healthier lifestyles.

The diagram shows the increase of overweight or obese from 1993-2018 that the percentage of obese are increasing rapidly.

Riverside Market Statement

High Sugar

As a nation we are becoming less active. Our busy lifestyles prioritise convenience over healthy food. 60% of the adult population is obese or overweight, we have to turn this figure around. If this trend continues future generations will have a shorter lifespan than generations before them. We know that changing daily lifestyle habits can be challenging but it can be done— we want to help people to break old habits and create healthy new ones.

Eighty percent of Inner Mongolia is extensive grazing. Its climate is arid to semi -arid and the frost- free period of most of the steppe is one hundred days; transhumant herding on natural pasture is the only sustainable way of using such land.

LIFE IN YURT Yurts are still most often associated with the country of Inner Mongolia. In fact, the word “ger” itself means home or household in Mongolian. Today, more than half of Mongolians live in gers. Traditional Mongolian meals are hearty, highly calorific and heavily meat and dairy-based. Animals (mutton, beef and goat) are the main source of sustenance for Mongolians, so meat, fat, milk, cheese and cream feature highly in dishes.

NAADAM FESTIVAL Naadam is the most widely watched festival among Mongols and is believed to have existed for centuries in one fashion or another. It has its origin in the activities, such as military parades and sporting competitions such as archery, horse riding and wrestling, that followed the celebration of various occasions, including weddings or spiritual gatherings.

Traditional Yurt

ContemporaryYurt A traditional yurt or ger (Mongolian) is a portable, round tent covered with skins or felt and used as a dwelling by several distinct nomadic groups in the steppes of Central Asia. The structure consists of an angled assembly or latticework of wood or bamboo for walls, a door frame, ribs (poles, rafters), and a wheel (crown, compression ring) possibly steam-bent.

PERSPECTIVE VIEW

GROUND LEVEL VIEW

The mobile contemporary yurt makes it easier to connect and separate, so that group members are free to join and leave. They have more personal private space and space for outdoor activities. Both children and adults can join the modern life even in the pasture that far away from cities because of the sufficient power generation equipment.

The higher level of living space provided a wider ground level exterior area for producing, communicating and holding events. It not only keeps ants and flies away, but also balances the humidity compared with the situation that yurts connected with soil directly.

22

DAYTIME

In the past a few years, Mongolian can hardly see their friends on account of the large boundless grassland. Living in the contemporary yurt makes it possible to live together as a larger group which benefits their mental health.

NIGHT SENSE

They have the choice to play folk, music, and dance companies perform in national dress with traditional Mongolian musical instruments, such as the morin khuur (horse-head fiddle) and yatga (a kind of zither).

Precedent Study-Tai Kwun art gallery (Facade part) abo ut me. Graduated in July from the Cardiff University, I am now spending my gap year in China, preparing for postgraduate program as well as accumulating experience. I have learned and mastered a lot of professional knowledge during my collage period. During undergraduate learning, I participated projects combining both practice and theory. From an urban garden redevelopment, to a stargazing platform design, these works were the most valued treasure which help me learn more about thinking like a real designer. Expect designer, I also want to develop my strengths in teaching and communication. My friends and colleagues always trust me to act as an advisor and connecting roles. Thanks again for your time and hope to hear from you soon.
