Motherland 故国 “Motherland" not only shows Cai Zhisong’s fascination with ancient Chinese culture but also addresses the dangers and consequences of cultural erosion in the face of today's increasing Globalization. In Cai Zhisong’s sculpture language, the Qin dynasty terracotta soldiers are an externalized trait, but there is a more important factor at work beneath the surface: his concern with the spiritual essence of human civilization and its progression from shallowness to depth. He yearns to see the human spirit elevated from weakness to strength, that upright splendor in the heart, rather than mere self-indulgence.

Rose 玫瑰 "Love, is like all other things, which you can never see its real face. It's not always the same as you imagine or see with your eyes. Love, like the blooming rose made of lead, only people holding it can truly feel it." Cai Zhisong said. Cai's sculpture ‘Rose series’ features a combination of lead and rose, which expresses the artist's understanding of love. “Lead, as a special material, is glossy but dull, soft but heavy, solid but fragile, stable but poisonous, and rose, known to all, is a symbol of love.”

If we ignore results, then when we see how things turn out to be, we will be fearful. So if we properly pay attention to the results in advance, life will be different."

Cai Zhisong 蔡志松

A sculpture artist whose powerful work has gained him international recognition, Cai Zhisong, a graduate of Beijing’s Central Academy of Fine Art, was the first Chinese artist to win theprestigious Taylor prize at the Paris Autumn Salon in Eiffel-Branly. Established in 1903, many of the world’s most famous artists have participated in the Autumn Salon, including Gauguin, Cezanne, Matisse, Renoir, Bonnard and Rodin. The Autumn Salon opens every year, comprising of painting, sculpture, architecture and photography. Named after Baron Taylor, only one distinguished artist receives the Taylor Prize every year. Created with great technical skill and inventiveness, Cai Zhisong’s impressive sculptures derive their inspiration from the sculptures of the Qin and Han Dynasties. Taking empirical figures, servants and warriors as his models, he uses modern techniques and materials to transform historically endowed entities into an entirely new significance and actuality. Out of glass-fiber reinforced resin and thin sheets of metal Cai Zhisong creates figures that capture the viewer’s imagination and achieve a timeless beauty. Intricate surface detail, such as the figures’ ornate hairstyles created out of thin wires, contrast with the simple, clear shapes and poses of his sculptures. Although impressive in size, the use of high tech material makes the figures seem amazingly light.Although derived from ancient sources, the expressive poses do not possess much in common with the static, solemn sculpture-works of former periods of Chinese art. Carefully balanced between movement and stillness they create a tension, which engages the viewer’s imagination. Furthermore, Cai Zhisong’s use of material gives his sculptures a modern feel. Choosing from a wide range of different materials available today from traditional to high tech, he develops a distinctive style, in which thin sheets ofmetal are applied to a skeleton of reinforced glass-fiber resin, sometimes overlaying the metal sheets further with other materials. Rather than building a smooth surface, the many small sheets overlay each other creating a patchwork pattern, which, although barely visible, is one of the distinct characteristics of Cai Zhisong’s style.

Cai Zhisong has won numerous important awards for his works such as: 1997 won Gangsong Family Foundation Award ; 2001 , won the highest award Autumn Salon in Paris, France - "Taylor Award ", a 103 year history of the event for the first time this winning Chinese artist , when he was twenty-nine ; 2004 , won the bronze medal of the Tenth National Art Exhibition . In the same year , was president of the Central Academy of Fine Arts Award ; 2011 were invited to participate in the 54th Venice Biennale ; 2012 selected 2012 French "Art Actuel" Top " 100 global leaders in the arts ," and topped the cover . In the same year , appeared in the " Fashion LOFFICIEL" Men "power list", was rated "art authority figures". 2013 was rated "Men's Uno style " of the " 2013 Chinese -style characters ." In the same year was named Phoenix and Phoenix, " 2013 Annual Chinese fashion leaders ." In recent years, Roses and Clouds are the latest series of Cai Zhisong, following his earlier series of Mother land, which gained high recognitions from both academic the market area. Roses communicate the artist's unique interpretations on love by incorporating broad historical issues into the discussions of human affections. In this collection, the beauty of roses in blossom is stilled by the lead-like calmness by combining modern objects with trendy elements to reveal "the ruthless clashes between the passion for dreamland reality". If the Motherland series regarded as discussions on humanity and history, the collection of Clouds would be the review on life, in which the artist uses highly expressive art forms to explain karma and unpredictability of life. Five sets of Clouds were displayed at 54th Venice Biennale and in 2012 Poly auction’s evening sale one set successfully made a new auction record price at RMB 6,900,000, the first among contemporary Chinese sculptors. The tranquility and sorrow seen in Motherland can also be seen in Roses and Clouds. As we view his works, viewers will get deeper into the spiritual aspects of Cai's works and his familiarity and control on various creation approaches and appreciate the beauty of his works and the charisma of the artist.
