PORTFOLIO JIE YANG
Hello! I'm Jie Yang, an industrial design learner. I believe the boundary of design is becoming more and more obscure nowadays and as a designer, we need to apply design thinking and strategy to areas like business, engineering, society in order to solve problems on a systemic level for a greater group of people. My portfolio is focued on the basic skills as a traditional designer and my exploration

Project 1
Sustainable Transportation System To incorporate a sustainable holistic transportation system on Tongji University, I want to introduce a new concept--the Tongji Bikes! This is a uniquely designed bike for the students at Tonagji University. But it’s not just a bike! In our focus of creating a bigger sense of ownership and responsibility among the students towards their bikes, the students get the opportunity to personalize their bike with different colours and materials. Academic / Group Work / Workshop with Kolding school of design,Denmark Oct.2013

Project 4 MUJI PEN
MUJI PEN Project 3 MUJI is one of the most successful brands in the world, which perfectly demontrated the feeling of Asian culture. In this project, I was supposed to design a pen for this certain brand. This is a kind of design which looks simple, but requires complex process. C-Matrix Geek has been the recent topic among designers all over the world. In this project, we want to use open sourse hardwares and software to make a light with consciousness. This design is the first step of the series, which allows users to draw a light by themselves. Also, this light is a module, which allows dozens of matrix to be connected together. C-Matrix is part of the Smart Home, which uses different sensors to achieve different functions. In this prototype, camera were set above the matrix, so it can detect movement and allow users to draw a light connected together to make a even biger one.
Programming In this program, we get h e l p f ro m p ro f e s s o r & students in digital media. To transmit the coordinates of fingers to C-Matrix, we uses processing, Max/MSP and Arduino.

NEW SYSTEM
FINAL EFFECT
The packages are devided into 2 areas and on each package is the owner's sername.
We seperate them into 3 stacks with the last two digits of owner's phone number.
To make it more stable and durable, we decide to use steel to make the sign.
Area A ----name of 2 Chinese characters Area B ----name of 3 Chinese characters
We think it will be more reasonable to use phone numbers instead of names, which can efficently reduce the chance to have several package in one sign.
This system turns out to be very successful and the other express company begin to follow it. Now this new system is widely used in university. Students love it very much.
Because the surname is easliy to be the same, it will take a long time for people to find their package. This system is obviously annoying but n o o n e i s re s p o n s i b l e t o c h a n g e i t .

The Problematic Silence of Electromobility
Too silent to get attention from pedestrian
Electromobility The street in Shanghai is noisy, crowded and full of danger. In this project, we intended to improve electric mobility, which is silent and dangerous. We want to make them more suitable to the noisy environment and get attention from pedestrian. Academic / Workshop with Koln International School of Design (German) Dec.2013

In concept B, we find the horn of e-bike is very loud in quiet environment but inaudible on busy streets. So we designed a horn which can detect the sound outside.
PRESSURE
Pressure sensor is placed on handles. The first time it can be set because people have different power of grip. When break hard, the horn will be loud and vice versa. Jie Yang | 26
