Abstract: Urban Sprawl This is a Hot Topic How has the rural urban fringe been affected by urban sprawl? The Rural-Urban fringe is the name given to the land at the edge of an urban area, where there is often a huge mixture of land uses.

How has the rural urban fringe been affected by urban sprawl? A community and environmental regeneration body, produced a vision for the ‘countryside in and around towns’ that sets out ten ‘functions’ for a multi-functional urban fringe. A farmer will make far more money from a sale if there is already planning permission for building to occur on the land.

1, Shenzhen LOFT 2018 This design also encloses a quiet space, by connecting the 3-4 level high-density office LOFT through exquisite sidewalks, creating a small town with rich spatial variation. There are also some public spaces, such as the LOFT Theater and the Trading & Exhibition Center that gradually transform the “big” and “solid” periphery space to the “small” and “dynamic” inner region.

2, Nantou Village Renovation These projects mainly focus on the renovation of key public spaces and the introduction of public activities as part of the process of activating and promoting the regeneration of the Old Town. In the past decade, the cost of living has reached such a level, that many are leaving Shenzhen for their home town or other cities where the living condition is more affordable. In a bid to retain talents, Shenzhen created an affordable housing program to ease the housing pressure. Compared to other affordable housing developments, this project is a one of its kind. It is the first time the government leased property from the villagers, in this case an ensemble of 35 handshake tower blocks to be converted into affordable housing.
