INTERMODAL Transit Hub
IMPROVING THE TRANSFER ENVIRONMENT AT THE LI SHUI BRIDGE TRANSPORTATION NODE IN BEIJING
M.Arch Thesis I Spring-Fall 2011 I Committee: Brian McLaren I Gundula Proksch
Beijing has become the most important
transportation hub in China. As larger and larger population moved into the capital city, together with an enormous car growth, traffic congestion becomes a severe problem for today’s Beijing. Encouraging use of public transportation is considered as the ultimate solution. Yet the city’s transportation system and infrastructures leave much to be desired.
Undesirable transfer experience
becomes the most influential factor that impedes people from choosing public transit. Through design of a new intermodal transit hub for the Li Shui Bridge Station, the goal of this thesis is to explore
architectural solutions to provide efficient and seamless transfer between different transportation modes, comfortable experience with other amenities during transfer, and finally, a lively sustainable public place to benefit the neighborhood. The design concept of a climbing green “spiral” is indicated by the two existing subway structures. The at-grade structure of Line 5 and the elevated structure of Line 13 form a perpendicular spatial relationship and tendency of “climbing”. A spiral of shops and other amenities is merging into the lower station, together with a large green park at the spiral roof to benefit not only the commuters, but also the surrounding community.

BUS
I can transfer between different modes of transit means easily, smoothly and fast. There are plenty of p&r, bicycle parking spaces integrated in... The experience in the station isn’t a nightmare anylonger. The flow is divided to “fast’ and “slow” lanes based on users’ actual needs.
The transportation node is a mess, boring and unpleasent. I won’t be there except when I have to...
The node is a real place, which isn’t only about transporation, but a place we are proud of. It’s interesting, it worth a journey...

overlay multiple levels of activities as well as movement and circulation. Ramps on the northern and southern edges of the site link the ground plane to the mezzanine level, providing connections for riders from the east with public transit services. A pedestrian bridge over I-5 connects the mezzanine to North Seattle Community College, while the mezzanine extends to Northgate Mall parking lot, providing a pedestrian path on this level. Two additional pedestrian bridges link the mezzanine to roof-level plazas serving the three housing towers.

The concept of weaving multiple transit circulation paths and building types together is derived from several considerations. First, fully embedding the transit elements into the urban fabric provides the mixed-use environment with an integrated and distinctive character. Second, many functional elements within the project have, or could potentially have, a linear form. Configuring all program elements as dynamic, linear forms provides the project with a quality of movement and weaving. Finally, the site’s sloping contour provides an opportunity to

THE CENTER FOR ENERGY AND URBAN ECOLOGY, MAGNUSON PARK, SEATTLE
Studio work I Winter 2010 I Tutor: Rob Pena This tectonic studio is intended to achieve a high-performance portable modular classroom prototype for the center of energy and urban ecology at Magnuson park. Meanwhile the campus design including four classrooms and a boathouse was doen before design of the classroom. The site design concept is to treat the new campus as a connection between the dry land on north and the future wet land on south of the site. By spreading the classroom on south, pupils will have more interaction with the wet land throught decks. A
path way going west and east connects the road to the waterfront. Finally the boathouse is disigned as three smaller segments covering by a big roof, allowing outdoor sheltered activities during rainy days. The classroom design starts with the basic evironmental friendly dimensions, orientation, proportion of opening sizes, and so forth. Because it is a portable classroom, it is designed as a “kit of parts, with all structural and material elements are designed for easy truck transport.

WONIU INDUSTRIAL PARK & MUSEUM OF COAL MINING, XUZHOU, CHINA
Professional work I 2007 I Changjiang Studio Proposed Xuzhou Woniu Industrial Park is situated at west of Xuzhou Mining quarter, former Woniu Coal Mine. The site is at border of the city area and countryside, and it is near to the Yunlong scenic spot. It is formly the only coal mine of Xuzhou Mining Corporation that is in the city area, and it is also the main program of Xuzhou’s renewed projects. According to overall planning of Xuzhou and Jiuli quarter, this district will be changed into compositive area combining with functions of resi-
dential, commercial, recreation, and
working.
The Park composed of four functional parts can be seen as a new place intended to hold both interesting and memorial activities. Industrial buildings are mostly preserved and changed into new playground or exhibition halls, among which, three old buildings are carefully reconstructed into a seris of exhibitional spaces. Meanwhile, unique mining industrial constructions are redesigned into new landscape of Xuzhou Mining Theme Park.

Studio work I Spring 2010 I Tutor: Elizabeth Golden The concept of this new fitness and wellness center to make the central swimming pool as a focal point of crystal, surrounded by other means of wellness treatments, including massage, sauna, and fitness room. Each area has its own characters and color-coding for wayfiding. The site provides an opportunity
of directly linking the swimming pool deck to the P-Patch on south of the site. Also the upper levels of fitness and massage room will have a great view over Elliott Bay. The structure, HVAC, and facade systems are integrated to achieve a more comprehensive building design.

SIGHT-VIEWING PLATFORM, XUZHOU, CHINA
Competition I Group work with Xue Qi I 2007 This design considers trees as an inspiration. Through imitating tree’s characters of growing upwards, extending leaves, and the inner transfer system, the sightviewing platform shows a similar active mode. To achieve this form of conception, we developed the structure system constituted of two truss structures and a core cube.
