The City School was once the dream of pioneering educationist Dr. Farzana which turned into reality in 1978 with the setting up of the first campus in bustling Karachi. With time, it gradually established itself as one of the most prestigious and internationally-acclaimed chain of private schools. And today, it stands out as an institution in which there is absolutely no compromise on quality education and premium services . Monumental projects don't just develop overnight. Indeed, a lot of hardwork, commitment and contribution go into moulding an organisation the way in which it was originally envisioned. The City School has a network of 180+ schools in 45 cities across Pakistan. Our best practice made waves around the world and soon we set foot overseas, with the first international campus opening in Dhaka (year 2003) followed by further ventures in Dubai, Jeddah and Kuala Lumpur in short successions. The cornerstone of this growth is embedded in the aspirations of our visionary Chairperson and Managing Director, Dr. Farzana. In recognition of her services to the noble cause of education, the University of Staffordshire in the United Kingdom conferred upon her an honourary doctorate. The citation stated: “Increasing educational attainment is a current preoccupation in most countries across the world. But turning aspiration into achievement is a massive task. It requires good ideas, a passion for improvement and a vision which draws in the efforts of others. These are qualities which Dr. Farzana has displayed in abundance in developing The City School organisation in Pakistan. As we embark upon our 35th anniversary coming down a long road of memories and achievements, we take this opportunity to express our profound gratitude to all City School members without whose concerted efforts we would not be where we are today. Having said so, we pledge to continue the mission and objectives with further zeal.

10 ways to start afresh this year breaking up a habit will only take you half way. From there, you have to try to build a new habit, but the good thing now is that you can consciously choose this one.

Maliha Intikhab Senior II-T, Gulshan Girls

New Year's Eve is all about looking back at your past and most importantly looking forward to your future. A new year always brings along a ray of sunshine and hope which makes us believe that no matter how amazing or terrible the past year was, this one will be much better! New Year is the time for new beginnings, so here is a list of 10 resolutions which will hopefully mark 2013 as the best year you have had! 1. Break a bad habit and make a good one You don't have to start with a huge transition. Take baby steps, choose a bad habit of yours and slowly try to get rid of it. We humans are living huge moments of our lives on auto pilot so

2. Organise yourself! Sort out all the mess in your room! Take some time to organise your closet, work area, or your drawers and you'll notice that you will instantly feel relaxed. No matter how much you hate cleaning up, organising your things will always prove to be beneficial for you because this time you won't have to sift through the pile of paper clutter in your drawer to find that English essay. 3. Do something different Do something that is completely out of character for you, not only would that really expand your horizons but you will also make lifelong memories. It could be something as easy as making friends with new people or something as crazy as sky-diving or bungee jumping. Spend some time outside your comfort zone. Always remember, we only get to live once so better make the best of it!

4. Stop trying to be perfect! Perfection is actually a mind trap. Perfection means that you have reached the end of your journey which, in a human's case, is only possible when one is dead. Try to be better instead, because “better” will always leave room for improvement. And, perfection is really about embracing your imperfections, not hiding them. If everyone becomes “perfect”, then there will be no uniqueness, no individuality since our flaws are actually what make us one in a million. 5. Lighten Up I know all those exams are right around the corner, but trust me stressing out will get you nowhere. Instead, take a deep breath and calm down. Don't pile your work up; give yourself a little break every now and then to just relax. You can be your worst enemy if you put pressure on yourself, so why even do such a thing in the first place? 6. Stop being a quitter Failure is not losing at something; it is giving up on something. Quitting something is not called starting over; it is called

What if UFOs really exist?

UFOs… umm, huge flying saucers full of the strangest of aliens, some with arms as long as buses, eyes as big as footballs, waiting to swallow up on unexpected victims from the ground and do a whole series of disturbing or unpleasant things to them. Loads of people say that they're real, but are they? Well, I'm not here to blab on about boring, old facts; I'm here to tell you the truth, and this is it! According to some amazingly clever but a slightly boring group of scientists (who probably know way more things than

the average dad), and some very interesting sci-fi movies, UFOs are meant to 'swallow' people up! Altogether, there are approximately 17,694 UFO sightings per year (most of these have happened to average sized families) so if you're good at math (I'm not!), you'll be able to work out that (supposing that these sightings started in the 19th century) if UFO's do swallow people up, there should be 35,388,000 people floating about in space right now! And if they started before the nineteenth century, the whole human race should have been extinct, animals should have taken over the Earth, then they should have died and THE-WORLD-SHOULDHAVE-ENDED!*breathing heavily*. Humph… Well, I suppose I'll have to cover some facts now. So, here goes! Over the past years men, women and children have said to have seen 'unidentified flying objects'; some have even

recalled meeting strange beings from other worlds (that would be so awesome!), but has anybody got any proof? “The object could have been a comet”, many (boring) scientists say. Are they right, or are they just trying to hide a gruesome truth? *raising an eyebrow* Once in the early 20th century, there was an unexpected rise in the number of deaths and disappearances in the American province of

04

leaving something unfinished. We have to learn to take responsibilities. Do not give up, keep fighting for your dreams. Then, even if you do not achieve your goal, there would still be the satisfaction that you tried your best! “If life gets you down, get right back up”. 7. Spend less time online No, I am not trying to be preachy here, but we spend way too much time improving our cyber social life than we spend on our real one. Instead of writing on someone's wall, how about actually hanging out with them? I'm not advising you to leave social media but just make sure you have a real social life too!

9. Set a list of goals Where would you like to see yourself in a year? Make a list of goals you want to achieve this year, and put it up somewhere you can see it every day. Statistics show that if you set goals for yourself, it makes it a lot more likely for you to achieve them. 10. Try to become a nicer person You do not have to start big; just complimenting your friend is good enough. Volunteer at your local hospital or at a retirement home. I can guarantee that it will be the best feeling in the world to know that you were the reason behind someone's smile. And talking about smiling, do keep one on yourself too, it's charity!

8. Boost up your health routine By this, I do not mean running on a treadmill until you run out of breath. It is to slowly try and make your lives healthier. Instead of that pizza, how about have an apple for lunch? How about walking home rather than waiting for your driver to come pick you up? It is always these little things that make the biggest differences!

Kansas, the number one hot spot for sightseeing UFO's.

WE'LL-BE-THE-RULERSOF -THE-UNIVERSE!!! *laughing horrifyingly*. So, as you can see, because of the two types of aliens listed above, there is a very big risk if UFOs do exist. The world could end, or expand. Well, I don't know about you but I'd rather live for a little bit longer than go looking for aliens that might end the world as we know it. So maybe the mystery of UFOs is best left unsolved… for now.

The worst fashion trends of all time

Aiman Masood A-1, C-III, Gulshan A levels

W

What exactly is 'fashion'? A popular trend, style, manner or a vogue according to masses but I've a slightly different meaning for it. For me, fashion helps you express yourself and therefore it should always be based on what you find interesting - and no one else! Fashion is an expression of one's inner self, how one would like to carry him/her self and not a reflection of everyone's expectation of what should be expressed. Fashion doesn't mean to adopt something according to your comfort level but it's something that is popular or being hyped upon. In today's world, every individual is in a race of following latest and solitary fashion trends. But sometimes they can go wrong as well. We can actually 'kill' fashion if we are not aware of

the after-effects of adopting a particular one. It's a major concern that might be related to health as well. Moreover, apart from health issues, a person might look hideous if the particular fashion is not suiting them at all. They might end up becoming a laughing stock! Let's take a brief look on the worst fashion trends of all times in today's world:

that too is: Are skinny jeans attractive on men? It might look good on them if they know how to carry it otherwise they should not go skinning as it depends on a particular body type and how tight the jeans are. Honestly though, it looks great on women so it's better if they're the ones doing that fashion rather than guys trying to look so breathtaking with the skinny pants.

Feather Boas, Furry Boas and Animal Fur all around are the worst fashion trends ever. It is a major turn off when it comes to wearing them with an evening gown or funky top. There was a time when famous celebrities were seen wearing one. From Madonna to Britney Spears, every girl was keen to make it a part of her wardrobe but sadly, we were wrong. It looks very tacky and uncanny as far as styling is concerned, so I would suggest going simple. Elegancy is the key to attractiveness and make sure you follow it religiously. Another question that arises in my mind and I'm sure everybody is thinking about

However, for anyone with curves, the tightness of the bottom of the jeans just emphasizes big thighs and it looks awkward. The only way to salvage this trend is to tuck the skinny jeans into a pair of boots. This is the best way to look awesome if girls are way too conscious about their appearance.

Because I'm a girl

Doesn't it get frustrating, sitting behind closed doors in a house, doing the dishes and mopping the floor, no one there to sit beside you to help? Does it ever occur to you that many women in the world live like this all alone? Why doesn't our society progress at the speed we want it to? Well, girls are the answers; since in an average household, girls are taught to be sensitive, altruistic, caring, delicate, expressive and emotional in their outlook and submissive. These are the characteristics that hinder a girl's way to develop into a

According to Yahoo, the worst trend was of shoulder

complete, human being. It's true that women are creators by default of new generations and they must protect, care and nurture their children with utmost devotion. We girls are taught to be caring and loving since birth. For example, we are given dolls and teddy bears to play with, whereas boys are given cars and guns. With these principles, we are instilled with many humble characteristics but we are usually taught in indirect ways to be submissive. We are kept from the world of knowledge and made feeble towards men. Is this the treatment we deserve for being girls? Sometimes I feel it has become a practice in society to treat girls like a vulnerable and lesser human being. There are many superstitions associated with girls. I have personally experienced some very common ones such as, 'Girls shouldn't go out in the society without a man by her side', 'Girls shouldn't go

anywhere when it's dark', 'Roaming in the dark with open hair can make you vulnerable to supernatural things', 'A girl shouldn't be left alone in a house', 'Wearing black is prohibited when you are engaged yet not married', 'They should not wear perfumes when alone, it may attract the jinni', et cetera; has anyone ever thought that why on earth will being a girl affect our vulnerability? This is the biggest reason why men have accomplished more than women because like a caste system or racism, people have classified gender differences into classes: men belong to a successful and brave class, women to the dominated and feeble class, and then these very rules become the principles on which we live our lives. There is a quote in the novel, A Game of Thrones, which is: men are not braver than women, they are of the same status; men just boast more about it. Though these are not the exact words, they do

mean the same. Being a girl and having an adventurous life becomes more of a dream than reality. A girl in our society who acts tough or brave will be taken as a 'tomboy'. Classification of abilities between genders is an issue which has considerably changed the society's views since evolution, that it is quite normal to think, at least in Pakistan, that a girl must get married when she graduates from college; that she must be a housewife and mother forever whereas the father should be earning for the family. It once happened that I told my cousin I would consider marriage only when I turn twenty-seven or twenty-nine and complete education. She replied that it would be too old an age for marriage. So now the world only treats girls to be desirable at a certain age after which she turns into an old ugly hag and her facial beauty has turned women into being highly insecure. This is the affect the society is having on us girls. If the society is destroying us then

why does it complain about not progressing? Women should hold a huge part in the progress of a country but it is these thoughts that turn us into such a person! Joan of Arc was a girl who shook the world, did she care about her gender or vulnerability? No she didn't. Women may be the peaceful way to resolve conflict, just look at how revolutionary Anne Frank's diary has been and she was just thirteen. She influenced our minds better with words than hits. I'm a girl, but being a girl doesn't count towards my weakness. I'm not vulnerable because I'm a girl. I'm vulnerable because in order to blend in with the society I have to tailor myself to be less than what I'm capable of!

I remember an unforgettable and horrible experience of my life when I was 7 years old. My mother was posted in the Military College of Engineering at Risalpur. We used to visit Islamabad during the weekends frequently. Once, I was travelling to Risalpur

We were travelling at a steady speed on the Motorway since father does not approve of fast driving. Before we started our journey back home, mother and I tightened our seat belts. She asked us to pray to God before setting off. We were chatting and sometimes singing to pass the time. In between we would enjoy snacks such as chips, egg and cheese sandwiches from time to time over glassfuls of juice.

Hello everyone! I'd like to share some information about my favourite music icon who happens to be the young celebrity Selena Gomez! Her full name is Selena Marie Gomez, aged 20 years (born on 22nd July 1992 in Texas). She is an American singer and also an actor. All of her songs are a smashing hit because her lyrics are based on real life. Her songs give a message, a message to always be yourself and follow your heart, no matter

When you feel a little down or angry over something, just forget the world, plug in your earphones and listen to her songs, like me!

It was around 4 pm and we had become a bit lethargic. Our car was moving with constant speed. We heard a loud and powerful sort of burst near the Burhan interchange. Much to our horror, one of our rear wheels had burst open and the car zig-zagged off track. It turned upside down by the sudden impact and rolled twice in the middle of the road! There were shrieks of fear and agony, splintered glass was strewn across the road. The car looked undamaged, not a single dent was present on the car's body except for the side door mirror which had twisted badly. When my mother controlled her senses, she first looked at me and then searched for my younger

My favourite music icon what! Selena is very gorgeous and her hair is just so pretty that I wish I was like her! Her dressing style attracts me a lot and the way she is so casual and “real”. One of her songs has a message that you may not be a beauty queen but you are beautiful to yourself, you are beautiful inside. She is unlike other actresses who may be beauty queens but are in reality drama queens! Selena is very popular and loved by all. She has millions of fans in the social media. Everyone wants to be like her but no one actually can, because she is just extraordinary! She has a lot of music videos too and I love all of them. Her latest song is called 'Hit the Lights'. Travel – An exciting visit to China family was overjoyed by this reunion!

Abeera Farooq V-C, Senior - Abbottabad

T

Three years ago, when I was a student of Class II, my father had gone to China for official work. Our family decided to visit him there and explore the great country of China ourselves. We planned our visit in the month of June, during our summer vacations. We left for Islamabad airport in the early hours of the morning. Fortunately for us, the plane was in time as per its schedule. The first city we landed in China at was Urumqi. After a nights stay in the city, we took another flight to Xi'an. It was another long flight since China is a very big country. We arrived in the evening when it had gotten dark. My father was waiting for us. I cannot forget the expression of delight on my father's face when he saw us, the whole

China is a beautiful country. Its people are very nice and courteous to foreigners especially to Pakistanis. The educated class of the Chinese people is really civilised and there is no serious crime rate except for small crimes like stealing etc. which are common around the world. We visited many cities in China but two of them are worth mentioning in particular: Xi'an and Beijing. Xi'an is one of the most ancient cities surviving on the planet with more than 3000 years of history. It is the capital of the Shaanxi province and one of the four Great Ancient Capitals of China, having held the position under several of the most important kingdoms in Chinese history. The next day was a Friday and my father took us to the old part of Xi'an city which is surrounded by a city wall. We were amazed to see the rich Muslim culture in this part of the city. It has a mosque called the Great Mosque which is more than 500 years

old and a famous street called 'Muslim Street' which serves all type of traditional Muslim food. Although the taste was a little different than what our palates are used to, we all savoured the food nonetheless.

For the next few days, we visited places like the Ocean World, Bell-Tower, Drum Tower, and the Safari Park. The most exciting place to visit though was the Terracotta Warriors Museum. It is a form of funerary art buried with the emperor in 210–209 BC and whose purpose was supposedly to protect the emperor in his afterlife. The figures, dating from 3rd century BC, were discovered in 1974 by some local farmers which include warriors, chariots and horses. Other Terracotta non-military figures were also found in other pits containing officials, acrobats, strongmen and musicians. My brother and I

bought the souvenirs of the Terracotta armies and had pictures in the uniform of Terracotta soldiers. Our next destination was Beijing, the capital of China. It is about 1100 km from Xi'an .We travelled by train. For me it was a new experience because the trains in China are so comfortable that it seemed as if we were not travelling on ground, rather we were in the comfort zone of our bedrooms! We reached Beijing in the early hours of the morning where we stayed for 3 days. On the first day, we visited the Summer Palace. It is spread over 3 km and consists of a lake, a hill and a palace where Chinese emperors used to spend their summer days relaxing. In the afternoon, we visited the famous 'Forbidden City'. For half a millennium, it had served as the home of emperors and their households, as well as the ceremonial and political center of the Chinese government.

As of October 2012, Apple has sold approximately 26.9 million iPods worldwide. According to the company's CFO, they have had a fantastic fiscal year so far by generating over $41 billion in net income. It is indeed one of Apple's crowning technical achievements, both in terms of exceptional hardware and its innovative integration with software. And lately, as I walked my way to the common room of my campus, I passed by a group of ten students

Although musical gadgets like the mp3s have been associated with hearing loss, social isolation is another likely outcome of their use. “Have you ever tried saying 'hello' to somebody listening to an iPod? If I see the white or black wires sticking out of somebody's ears, I don't even bother, even if it's a friend. Again, in crowded public spaces, this may be a desirable outcome”, says Areni, professor at the University of Sydney who

studies environmental psychology, music and cognition. So, you're the youngest sibling at your home. You are undergoing a convulsion of emotions due to some incidents you recently had. How about picking up your iPod and listening to the song that perfectly reflects the miserable life you've so far lived? According to Sherry Turkle (Ph.D. in Sociology and Personality PsychologyHarvard), technology doesn't create loneliness, it just reveals it. She goes on to say that people who are engrossed in listening to songs and other such stuff don't really want to ignore the world but are ostracised leaving them so emotionally unstable that isolation leads to connection when a lonely individual becomes involved in technology. If you ever happen to pass by the Cantt Station in Karachi, you'll notice a lot of homeless people begging for change.

We returned to Xi'an the next evening where we stayed for a month. After a memorable stay of 2 months in China, we came back to our beautiful homeland Pakistan with heavy hearts, since my father still had to stay back for further official research. It was a thrilling experience which is, and will remain in my heart and mind, as one of the most cherished trips of my life!

Next day early in the morning, we set out for visiting one of the 7 Wonders

iPods and MP3s can lead to social isolation listening to their iPods, moving their heads as they hummed the tunes. Listening to iPods between classes can lead students to social isolation. This is the prime reason why mp3 players and iPods in particular have been banned in schools at Sydney (Australia) since March 2005. Social isolation doesn't just mean being alone, but something far more serious. Social isolation is a health problem. It can lead to depression, anxiety, rage and a lot of other issues.

of the World, the Great Wall of China. All of us were very excited about it and when we reached the landmark to climb it, we felt at the top of the world and no doubt it is true that this is the only part of the earth that can actually be seen from the Moon!

While most people tend to ignore them, you often notice many of these same people (particularly the youth) walk by with headphones firmly planted in their ears. They are absolutely impervious to any verbal requests. I realized some of them just want to listen to music, while others simply use musical gadgets as a means to limit their social interaction. Despite the prevalence of social networks, cell phones and emails that were meant to bring people together, excessive use of technology in this regard is leading to desolation and anguish in people and relationships. Robin Abrahams, a researcher at Harvard University, reports that the use of iPods tends to make owners more shy. The reasoning is simple: When people are connected to their iPods as they take public transportation or walk down the street, they do not have to interact with others around them. They can listen to their

music and shut out the outside world. This leads people to become less skilled at making small talk and, as a result, shyer. This could increase social isolation, the Harvard researcher states. Listening to music activates the visual cortex inside the brain and is deeply intertwined with memory. Pieces of music can serve as powerful triggers for memories, just as they engage the brain in conjuring up appropriate imagery to match the progression in the music. Part of the reason that musical gadgets lead to social isolation is the fact that listening to music can involve a person to such an extent that he/she can't focus on the 'other' world, outside the 3foot circle around them. While it is true that it is the use of technology and not technology itself that makes itself harmful, we somehow possess the ability to become too wrapped up in it instead of taking control of it to lead a balanced life.

Why become a Franchisee? A Sm@rt School is a smart investment!

A

As The City School envisions The Smart Schools as centers of holistic and modern learning, the management wants every student to benefit from the very best that we have to offer and this is why all campuses will be equipped with facilities that allow students and parents alike to enjoy the benefits of quality education. We believe in independent management so the administration will be allowed to run the schools themselves with minimal interference. However, since we expect standardised systems, some functions will be centralised to aid the school staff.

With the backing of our strong network, The Smart Schools are an investment with inherent viability; they are backed by an established image of an organisation with a proven track record of surpassing excellence in quality education

The Smart Schools will provide a standard framework of education. For this purpose, a centralised Head Office along with two fully functional regional offices i.e. South and North Region Offices will ensure provision of continuous support to the franchises. All franchisees will be in regular contact with the team and through them, a network will be established where investors are gathered together on one platform.

Standardised Academic Curriculum

T

The City School will provide a standard curriculum nationwide to achieve our mission of quality education at an affordable cost and in an excellent academic environment. The developed syllabi would be provided to the associates ensuring that all Smart Schools are at par with each other.

The City School Network intends to create a combined online hub for The Smart Schools. In today's rapidly-growing age of Information Technology and innovative communications, it is necessary for our investors to stay in touch with each other and feel connected. Our proposed web portal will allow Smart Schools to connect with each other and present a unified image of their curriculum. Parents and students will also be able to derive benefit from this connectivity, thus promoting a paperless environment.
