All of the rich history and experiences shared at this monument present a great opportunity to develop the site into a meaningful place, restoring it from a forgotten nugget of history to a revered public site. The concept is formed by tracing the tracks of the travelers from Alyamamah before, and using the direction to create a grid that follows it.

Jabal Abu Makhroug has always been a historical landmark, ingrained deep within the history of the region. The mountain’s site is layered, both physically and metaphorically, with sentimental value ranging since centuries. Travelers from AlYamamah (Alkharj) used the mountain as their north star for reassuring them of their path, and acting as a checkpoint to their journeys back and forth. The mountain was also used as a resting point before continuing their journey to Al Basrah, Iraq. The mountain was a popular spot for the late King Abdulaziz, as he would travel outside the borders of the old town of Riyadh to simply enjoy the views as he watched horse races from the top of the mountain.

abu makhroug competition

The project consists of a visitors’ center, the preliminary point in which visitors are given an overview of the site and it’s historic value, as well as the different activities and areas available. Alongside the visitors’ center is a market area comprising of vendor spaces To showcase a variety of local businesses. This allows for visitors to interact with the locals and the culture. Walking further into the site, visitors will cross organically into the community garden, which hosts a large range of local plants that are showcased around the site. This allows for visitors to experience and learn about the natural desert landscape in a harmonious manner. The community gardens surround the focal point

of the park, which is the mountain itself. By reverting the topography to it’s natural condition it is possible to create a suspended ramp with platforms that connect the base to the very top and through the opening, allowing visitors to experience the views in a unique, accessible and aerial way. The bridge also alludes to the mountain’s history regarding King Abdulaziz, as its length is 1/10th of 4.8km, which is the length of the journey that the king would experience in order to reach the mountain. In addition to the bridge, the site offers a range of jogging and cycling paths to create a safe active space. Furthermore, the project aims to attract a diverse audience, because of that, a large monumental park is made to host and exhibit different events and acts as a marketing space for major activities. In an effort to create a sustainable environment, all buildings and vegetation are 100% locally sourced. They are sourced by using rammed earth as a main building material for the commercial areas, and concrete for the suspended ramp, both providing the necessary properties for Saudi Arabia’s weather. Also, The forms of the buildings, lush landscape, orientation and shading devices around the site offer natural shade by manipulating the sun’s exposure in order to reduce heat gain and allow ventilation throughout the site. These sustainable development goals, as well as diverse cultural activities, are all in direct correspondence with the goals of Saudi Arabia’s Vision 2030. This vision includes building a more sustainable living, as well as a more culturally, and historically aware Community.

commercial area design the commercial area design revolves around creating a hub for main activities and gathering point for the project. it acts as an economic and cultural center. it connects directly to the park. the design follows the conceptual grid of the project and developed as blocks extruded from the ground connecting to the heritage and natural materials of the park, using rammed earth as a main structural material.
