El Romanticismo es un movimiento cultural y político originado en el Reino Unido y Alemania a finales del siglo XVIII como una reacción revolucionaria contra el racionalismo de la Ilustración y el Clasicismo, dándole importancia al sentimiento.

Su característica fundamental es la ruptura con la tradición clasicista basada en un conjunto de reglas estereotipadas. La libertad auténtica es su búsqueda constante, por eso es que su rasgo revolucionario es incuestionable. Debido a que el romanticismo es una manera de sentir y concebir la naturaleza, la vida y al hombre mismo es que se presenta de manera distinta y particular en cada país donde se desarrolla.

ROMANNTICISM (II) The Romantics tended to define and to present the imagination as our ultimate "shaping" or creative power, the approximate human equivalent of the creative powers of nature or even deity. It is dynamic, an active, rather than passive power, with many functions. Imagination is the primary faculty for creating all art. ROMANNTICISMO (III) Entre 1770 y 1800 "Europa se acostó absolutista y neoclásica y se levantó demócrata y romántica". Gracias a la revolución industrial inglesa (1760-1840), que desarrolla una clase burguesa y sienta las bases del liberalismo; gracias a la revolución francesa (1789), que proclama los principios de libertad, igualdad y fraternidad; gracias igualmente a la revolución americana con su Declaración de Independencia (1776), que hace de los derechos del hombre su centro y establece la república como forma de gobierno y al pueblo como fuente exclusiva del poder; gracias a todos estos hechos la Libertad reemplaza a la tiranía, el poder absoluto se ve limitado y la democracia se erige en ideal de gobierno.

Beecher Stowe “La cabaña del Tío Tom”… En Francia, George Sand representa el espíritu romántico y Jacques Chirac la reverenció en el segundo centenario de su nacimiento: “Encarna el espíritu francés en toda su grandeza, no cesó de aspirar a estos valores de libertad, igualdad y fraternidad que son el fundamento de nuestro país. American Romanticism and its Contrast with the Euro pean counterpart

This paper accounts for the American romanticism and its difference with its European counterpart. Romanticism was rebellious in spirit, standing in reaction against the ne oclassical spirit and then prevailing in American literary life. The romantic period, which stretches from the end of the18thcentury, through the end of the Civil War, is one of the most important periods in the history of American literature. The romantic showed a profound admiration and love for nature, the beauty and perfection of nature could pro duce in him an unspeakable joy and exaltation.

merican Romanticism Basically, romanticism represented an attitude toward the realities of man, nature, and society, which had its source in the stirring events both in Europe and in America; it was not an organized system. Romanticism was rebellious

in spirit, standing in reaction against the neoclassical spirit and then prevailing in American literary life. Different from neoclassical who stressed formality, order and authority, the romantic emphasized freedom and individualism, believing that imagination was superior to rationalism.

Different from the neoclassical, who was convinced of the validity of material reality, the romantic preferred the innate perfection by the heart of man. To the romantic, ideality and elevation was a reality that was more loft than evidence of the substantial things; and his reliance upon the significance of the substantial, inner life found expression in institutionalism and a profound interest in abnormal psychology illustrated in the works of such man as Emerson, Poe, and Howthorne. gize nature. The natural poetry of Bryant and Longfellow typically exhibited this primitive literature, such as epics, ballads, and other forms of folk literature. It is difficult to give a satisfactory definition of romanticism.[i] The romantic period, which stretches from the end of the18thcentury, through the end of the Civil War, is one of the most important periods in the history of American literature. The years from 1815 to 1820 have been regarded by many literary historians as the “pivotal period in the development of romanticism. The romantic spirit originally come into being and strengthened in Germany, France and England from the middle of 18th century, as a react against the prevailing neo-classical spirit and rationalism during the age of Reason. In literature, romanticism found earlier expression in German, French and England literatures than in American literature. Canto a la libertad

Si hoy abordáramos por la calle a cualquier chaval solicitándole nos recitara de memoria un poema, La Canción del Pirata -concretamente, sus cuatro primeros versos- sería la respuesta más probable. Como también podrían serlo las rimas de Bécquer, el principio de Platero y yo, las azucenas de Garcilaso o el hombre a una nariz pegado de Quevedo.

sto no demuestra la mayor virtud de uno u otro poeta, únicamente pone de manifiesto la concienzuda obsesión de nuestros maestros por grabar a fuego los únicos poemas que la mayoría lleva, junto a otros datos inútiles, por toda compañía vital; malgastado empeño que bien podrían haber empleado en inculcar un poco de gusto por la literatura.

Rescatemos la pasion.

En épocas de crisis, como la España de principios del XIX o la presente que nos toca vivir, el ser humano busca mecanismos para sobrevivir y se refugia en la fantasía o en la pasión.

N

o sólo vivimos de ilusiones cuando no podemos cambiar nuestra vida, también nos aferramos a un sueño, como fuente de inspiración o como meta a lograr, cuando luchamos por unos ideales con la esperanza de que las cosas pueden cambiar.

Así, el Romanticismo también puede verse como una forma de rebeldía contra el orden establecido, porque se niegan a aceptar las cosas como son, a dejar de luchar y a resignarse, mientras buscan nuevos modelos de vidas a imitar en el pasado, en otras culturas o en los marginados sociales. No pretenden únicamente evadirse de la realidad y refugiarse en un mundo de fantasías como muchas veces se ha creído.

Prueba de ello es que muchos románticos, además de grandes defensores del individualismo, resultaron ser también personas muy comprometidas con causas políticas y sociales.

José de Espronceda, extremeño por azar, madrileño y español por convicción y cosmopolita por obligación, es el poeta español más representativo del Romanticismo y uno de los poetas españoles más populares de todos los tiempos, por ser el autor de versos tan archiconocidos como la Canción del Pirata o el Canto a Teresa .

Pero Espronceda además fue un hombre de acción, que vivió apasionadamente, implicándose en cuestiones políticas y militaFrancis Piep LLORENÇ-YUYU – escultura

res que le causaron muchas desventuras, lo llevaron a la cárcel, al exilio y, según las malas lenguas, le causaron la ruptura de su relación con Teresa. Y como buen romántico murió joven y en circunstancias extrañas por lo que el artista se convirtió en mito.

Posiblemente “el poeta del pueblo y de la juventud” , deba su éxito a que sus poemas responden a preguntas universales, independientes de coordenadas espaciales y temporales, cuestiones inherentes al ser humano como la libertad, la rebeldía, el espíritu aventurero y el amor.

he other day, Ellis Shookman, of the German department at Dartmouth, was speaking at the Columbia University Seminar on 18th-Century European Culture, of which I am chair. His topic: "Attitudes toward America in Christoph Martin Wieland's Journal Der Teutsche Merkur in the Years 1775 to 1807."

These were the years in which we were forming into a nation, and the Germans seem to have been very interested in what was going on here. I tried to get Ellis to speak at the Seminar in October, in the month before the U.S. presidential election, but his teaching schedule didn't allow him to get to New York before now.

In Goethe's early drama Stella, Lucie says that her father died on a business trip to America. In truth, he abandoned his wife and daughter, but America was apparently deemed far enough to prevent people from inquiring more closely. In Poetry and Truth, Goethe wrote that America was "the El Dorado of those who found themselves discommoded by their immediate situation" (das Eldorado derjenigen, die in ihrer augenblic-

T

he power of Emily Brontë's Wuthering Heights has always been in its devastating richness of emotion; how well her pens captures the tormented love between Catherine Earnshaw (Juliette Binoche) and Heathcliffe (Ralph Fiennes) on the high, cold Moors. Brontë, a resident of the English Moors herself, also knows a little of the isolated treachery, depression, and (in some twisted, delightful way) wit that lives there too and as one works their way through the complicated and thrilling prose, the story of the Heights becomes a tale for the ages; dark, sad, and completely unforgettable - one of the better books I've read in these last years.

Yet the catch, too, of Brontë's only novel is in its complication. Forget for a moment even the least of a filmmaker's worries - that rotating-narrators technique the author so skillfully deployed - and there are still at least a dozen other snags in any adaptation's plans-to-the-screen; namely, the entire second generation spawned between the blighted machinations of Heathcliffe and Cathy - a group of people who are the predominant focus of the book's latter half and without whom (as the hallowed 1939 film version, one I found somehow not morose enough, demonstrated so well) the book's continuing edgy drama and woe goes a little...flat.

Well, no such troubles will hound this British (finally!) interpretation of one crackling, sprawling, wicked opera of the soul.

Amor y Muerte: Goethe Alberto Javier Maidana Los sufrimientos del joven Werther (Die Leiden des jungen Werthers)[1774], es una de las novelas mas importante del movimiento Sturm und Drang (tempestad e ímpetu) es crita por Johann Wolfgang von Goethe (Frankfurt am Main, 1749 – Weimar, 1832). Es una novela epistolar y semiautobiografica.

L

a obra constituye una colección de cartas de un joven artista llamado Werther, que

van dirigidas a su amigo Wilhelm, en ellas revela datos íntimos de su estancia en el pueblo de Wahlheim, donde al enamorase de la Joven Lotta (Charlotte) entra en una batalla de sentimientos encontrados; al saber que la joven estaba comprometida con otro hombre, contra un estado de embelesado, que lo lleva a idealizarla y creer que ella siente lo mismo por el, sucumbiendo en un dramático final por el amor no correspondido.

Goethe se basa en la historia de un “Joven” Goethe y su amigo Karl Wilhelm Jerusalem, quienes en una noche de 1772, concurrieron a un baile. En este evento, Goethe conoció a la joven Charlotte Buff y su prometido, Johann Christian Kestner. Goethe se enamoró instantáneamente de

Charlotte. Pero luego de haber intentado ir mas allá de la amistad, Charlotte rechaza al escritor.

El trágico desenlace de la obra se basa en la suerte de su amigo Jerusalem, quien se quita la vida por el desamor.

La asociación de amor y muerte es una característica del romántico. Werther es romántico y como tal el amor lo atrae como sentimiento puro. Pero no alcanzará la armonía en el amor. El ama el amor por el amor mismo, y éste lo lleva a pensar en la muerte y se la hace desear, descubriendo en ella un principio de vida, la idealiza: la muerte por amor es vida, y la vida sin amor es muerte. Rosal í a de Castro, una vida de tragedia

Rosalía de Castro es una de las escritoras más representativas del Romanticismo español.

Pero tras esta frase se esconde un duro y trágico, y también valiente camino de una mujer del siglo XIX que se lanzó a hacer lo que sólo estaba otorgado a los hombres: escribir.

Rosalia de Castro, a life of tragedy Emma Alvarez

Rosalia de Castro is one of the most representative writers of the Spanish Roman ticism. But behind this phrase hides a hard and tragic, but also brave way of life of a XIX century woman, that pushed herself to make what was only allowed to men: writing.

nd she did it with the bravery that reminds us of the first Christian martyrs, that sung and prayed in the Coliseum in front of the lions, facing a certain death and in front of the eyes of an astonished crowd.

Rosalia knew what would happen to her, but she also knew that what she had to do and what she was born for.

Her life was always filled with controversy: daughter of an unmarried woman and a priest. This always supposed a big stigma.

But in his way, she meet a man with whom she married and had 6 children, a man that supported her in her career, something not usual for a man of that time.

The works of Rosalia have a strong symbolic meaning and social denounce, a feminist claim, and a deep mel a n c h o l y.

Brilliant both in prose as in verse. Between her most im-

portant works there are "The daughter of the sea", "Galician songs", "At the shore of Sar", and "Follas Novas".

But Rosalia did not seek fame, just expressing what she felt. It was her husband, the brilliant journalist Manuel Murguia who did everything to get her works published. In spite of this, there were always rumors that said that their marriage was not happy. All her children died before her, and her health was never too good.

But Rosalia soon left us, when she was only 48, although she left us a series of impeccable, deeply felt, emotive, suffered and enjoyed works.

Byron: Life and Legend, by Fiona MacCarthy

any of us are familiar with the works of Lord Byron and that according to Lady Charlotte Lamb, he was, “mad, bad and dangerous to know.”

But, what might not be as well known, is that Byron died of fever fighting at Messolonghi on the side of the Greeks against the Turks, during the Greek War of Independence.

And before his brave death, he vilified and cursed the British Lord Elgin for his theft of the marbles from the Parthenon, in the epic poem, “Childe Harold’s Pilgrimage“.

While biographies of Byron have been written endlessly since his death in 1824 at age 36, author Fiona MacCarthy's absorbing, insightful study of him is distinguishable because it doesn’t fawn over Byron's legend, but it is still keenly aware that the poet’s hypnotic persona and outrageously liberal ideals for his time had an extraordinary resonance throughout the world of art and literature.

Hoffmann el hechicero

Creo que aún no he despertado.

Exquisito y macabro, psicológico y grandiosamente mezquino, E.T.A. Hoffmann se erige en uno de los máximos representantes del romanticismo en su versión más inalcanzable y, a veces, menos conocida: la musical.

Y

a hablaban los griegos de ese sentido último de la existencia: la paradoja entre el deseo íntimo de supervivencia y la trágica conciencia del ser humano (la conciencia de la propia muerte). ¿Es éste el punto del que surge la idea de Dios? El romanticismo es, más que un periodo histórico, el movimiento aún vivo que retoma esa esencia trágica y la actualiza y la remueve hasta alcanzar el eco de nuestras conciencias desquiciadas... es la búsqueda de la pervivencia en el tiempo a través del arte y es el primero de los movimientos artísticos modernos y la más antigua de sus manifestaciones.

Ya conocía Edipo su destino, ya conocía Hoffman su final.

El verso yámbico se troca música de cámara en las líneas de un autor que, también compositor, se vuelve psicologista antes que H. James, surrealista antes que Joyce y fantasmagórico, tétrico y mitológico antes que

He bebido de los elixires del diablo y de mi mente surgió mi doble. Tal vez no le reconozcan porque es igual a mí en todo salvo en una cosa: sólo existe en mis obras.

Nos encontramos ante personajes atormentados en la búsqueda del propio yo, seres perdidos en el inconsciente que rebuscan entre placeres prohibidos y se jactan de las maldades de su doble. Hoffman pinta en el lienzo de un Dorian Gray furioso y mítico, en un Edipo que mira en su bola de cristal y bebe absenta para olvidar el profundo placer que le produce yacer con su propia madre.

Vuelve a nacer Dorian Gray cada noche para perderse en su sueño literario.

Antes de Poe, fue Hoffmann, no tan reconocido como sus renombrados sucesores... más literario y más auténtico, más visionario y frío y pasional y sincero y mezquino y magnífico.

Más trovador.

Más músico.

Y más literato.

Anoche desperté encerrado entre las páginas de un relato de Hoffmann.

Creo que aún no ha amanecido.

Ya resuena el coro que habla de ninfas y noches de verano encantadas.

Mientras miro mi copa, puedo ver el presente y el futuro extraños, como si se fundiesen en una misma gota de la sangre de mi doble delirante.

Sueño que escribo unas líneas torpes sobre un fantasma que componía susurros y que, despacio, me susurra una cansina letanía de miedos. Me conoce mejor que yo mismo porque se mira en mi copa de sangre y, a través de mi reflejo cansado, me espera. ¿Soy ahora don Juan o es mi sueño el que me engaña?

Is it Lord Byron?

Almost four years ago I saw a framed sketch in a local antique store,advertised as a 19th cen tury hand-drawing. I passed it up, but later de cided I was nuts and went back and purchased it for about $40.00. I refrained from excitedly sa ying to the cashier, "Do you think this is Lord Byron? I really think this is Lord Byron."

he poet George Gordon, Lord Byron, was the rock star of his day, with adoring fans and great interest in every detail of his life, especially his affairs and scandals. He still fascinates us today.

When I went to England in June 2005, I looked everywhere for a similar portrait of Byron, especially when we visited his estate, Newstead Abbey, but I never saw anything like it. So I am leaving it up to you. I have reversed some well-known Byron portraits and put them in black and white, for comparison.

Is my sketch Lord Byron?

This is what I imagine. A young Regency miss was infatuated with Lord Byron. Perhaps she even glimpsed him in Mayfair, at a ball or at the theatre. She and her girlfriends sighed over his Childe Harold's Pilgrimage, bought engravings of his portrait at the local print shop. She did what I did when I was a teenager. She drew her own picture of Byron, putting him in exotic dress, like she would have imagined Childe Harold to wear.

Of course, when I was a teenager I drew Beatle Paul McCartney’s portrait. I still have it somewhere, near my photo of William Shatner as Captain Kirk.

DE LAS COSAS QUE ESCAPAN A LA RAZON SE ENCARGA EL CORAZON (o COMO HACER RAZONAR AL INSTINTO) Antoniomingón Aquel día, nada más despertarse Roky miró a Elena. Ya se había convertido en su mujer. Dormía. Ya tenía alguna arruga en el cuello pero daba gusto verla. Roky Trapiello en su pacífico universo interior la contemplaba con detenimiento. Le acarició despacio un mechón de pelo. Le llevaba trece años pero los dos se habían ajustado a la vida matrimonial, y eso que en otro tiempo Roky había arremetido contra ese tipo de relación estable de convivencia (¿plena?).

quel día Roky le hablaría de su intención de pasar un fin de semana, unas horas felices, juntos en La Fundición, una casa rural de Zamora.

Roky había cobrado la liquidación de su último trabajo y tenía dinero suficiente.

Fue cuando sonó el teléfono.

—¿Qué hora es? —gritó medio dormida Elena. El ring la había desper¬tado.

—Casi las nueve y diez.

Roky descolgó el aparato con un grado de desconfianza.

—¿Diga?

Roky necesitó unos segundos de adaptación. Una voz casi olvidada pero conocida. Un viejo amigo: El Makario. “¿Pero…

Cómo me ha localizado?”.

El estilo del Maka era inconfundible. Roky se alejó de la cama con el auricular pues el Makario no se andaba con mucho protocolo. Tras un saludo torpe y cuatro palabras, Macario fue al grano.

—Presta atención. Tengo algo en la mano que puede interesarte, pero tiene su precio, un precio especial para ti.

Al momento Roky creyó que iba de farol pero intentó hacer caso a su mente. El Makario era capaz de hacer cualquier cosa y más.

Macario terminó la conversación con una medio amenaza por teléfono: —En la capital a las diez, en el Dimitri. Te recomiendo puntualidad y la pasta, contante y sonante o te arrepentirás. Hasta la noche.

Y a Roky le atacaron como un acceso febril la ansiedad y los recuerdos. Como las promesas se olvidan,

los amigos eran desleales. “El Makario, la madre que lo parió”.

El caso de Roky Trapiello y El Makario venía de años atrás.

La verdad es que las villas mineras del norte nunca fueron lugares fascinantes, pero todo el mundo tiene un lugar de nacimiento y aunque nadie se la ofreciera, una había sido la de Roky. No tenía castillo, catedral, ni playa.

distaba más de cien kilómetros de la capital de provincia.

La tierra y las vacas de los paisanos habían dejado de tener importancia para cedérsela al avasallador viento de la minería. A principios del XX se había descubierto que la tierra estaba preñada de carbón y desde entonces no había dejado de bus¬carse el negro tesoro.

Roky se había criado allí pero un día oyó a alguien decir en el váter de un lugar de copas que el dinero de la mina era maldito, que había que derrocharlo. Aun teniendo en cuenta el peligro que tenían esas fórmulas torpederas y simplificadoras, se podía decir que aquello le hizo mella. Harto, decidió ir a buscarse la vida a la capital.

Le marcaron los primeros años. Cambió el papel de chico retraído que había sido durante el bachillerato por el papel macarra callejero con vaqueros pitillo. Su simiente de insurrección le acercó a gente poco recomendable con la que rulaba en interminables correrías nocturnas allá por los ochenta, El Toison y otros garitos donde era difícil ser un santo. Y la casualidad (o no) le había acercado al Makario.

Al principio le pareció un tío legal, amigo de divertirse; pero primero el juego y luego el choriceo lo arrimaron a otra tropa con antecedentes penales y el cuento de los peces de colores en la capital se volvía blanco y negro.

Un día de diciembre ya convertidos en

delincuentes Macario y Roky planearon algo grande, harían historia. Algo que, pensó Roky, le iba a permitir separarse del Makario y sus amistades.

El caso es que el asunto había salido bien y Roky decidió salvarse, tuvo fuerza para reformarse y salir de aquella espiral. Y volvió al pueblo.

Pero el Makario por lo que adivinó por la llamada seguía siendo propenso a pasarse de vueltas. Lo había llamado otra vez en plan llorón y Roky le había dado dinero. Pero ahora le amenazaba.

—Tengo que irme a la city —dijo Roky a su mujer.

—Pero..., está bien.

Su mujer no dijo mucho más. Lo entendía todo a la primera.

—¿Cuándo volverás?

A Roky le gustaba el teatro así que se hizo el interesante. Respiró profundamente, le cogió la mano y le susurró al lado de la puerta: —En cuanto pueda.

Le daba a entender que no preguntara más. Y Elena así lo hizo. Roky ya se había sincerado (aunque no del todo) con ella cuando había recibido la primera llamada del Makario, también le había hablado por alto de su pasado pero el asunto del secuestro era una vergüenza que prefería no sacar a la luz. Así y todo tuvo una vaga impresión de que Elena sabía a qué iba a la capital.

Elena se acercó y le dio un beso en la mejilla con seguridad en sí misma.

—Adiós cielo —le dijo.

Cerró la puerta sin golpearla, después el silencio.

Lo primero que hizo Roky al salir de casa fue ir al banco a sacar todo el dinero que tenían Elena y él en la cuenta. No llegaba a la cantidad que le pedía Makario pero negociaría. El fin de semana de Zamora tendría que esperar.

El Ford diesel de Roky roncó al ponerse en marcha. Agarró el volante y apretó el acelerador con brío pero poco concentrado en el volante. “Uno siempre vuelve a lo mismo”.

A las dos horas llegaba al sur de la ciudad. Los nervios todavía no empezaban a templársele. Aparcó el coche como pudo en una calle convertida, como la mayoría, en estacionamiento interminable. Entró en un bar y porque lo devoraba la ansiedad tomó un gintonic que se lo despachó casi de un trago, luego otro y un tercero. Se sintió algo colocado al lado de su baúl de los recuerdos. Compró un paquete de ducados. Tras cinco años se reincorporaba a la minoría fumadora.

Eran poco más de las siete de la tarde así que bajó del taburete y enfurecido salió del bar a tomar el aire.

A las nueve y media entraba en El Dimitri.

Enseguida oyó un monótono rumor de voces. Exploró a los de detrás de la barra.

Pasó media hora.

El Makario no acababa de llegar. Raro para él pues en asuntos de puntualidad era británico. Pero después de lo que le pedía por teléfono a Roky no le faltaría paciencia.

Dos horas y media de espera era demasiado tiempo. Ya se había emborrachado.

Habló con un camarero: —¿Sigue por aquí Adrián?

—¡Eh, Adri! Preguntan por ti.

Era un camarero de los de antes. Ya tenía el bigote canoso. Trabajaba en la cocina.

Pero se recordaban. Hablaron de los viejos tiempos.

—¿Dónde puedo encontrar al Maka?

—No viene mucho por aquí. Vive en Los Pingüinos —le facilitó la dirección exacta.

Había cambiado de casa pero mantenía el barrio.

Roky subió al 4º C. Se encon-

tró la puerta abierta, “¡Qué raro!”. Entró.

El piso estaba a oscuras. Gritó su nombre.

Silencio por respuesta. El piso apestaba, estaba sucio y poco ventilado con botellas vacías por todas partes. Tanteó la pared y accionó un interruptor de luz. Y fue cuando se encontró con la sorpresa: Macario Frugal tumbado boca abajo al lado del sofá con su escaso uno sesenta y una camiseta del Real Madrid por vestimenta. Tenía cortes en las manos y había sangre por todos lados. Se agachó a su lado, gotas de sangre todavía caían al parqué. Sin duda estaba muerto. Un fuerte olor a salitre se alojó en la pituitaria de Roky.

A pesar del mal rollo de verlo cadáver le cacheó los vaqueros: algo de dinero, papel de liar, un mechero, unas llaves, una navaja pero la cinta por la que quería chantajearlo no. Roky se puso de pie y lo miró desde arriba. Se sentía aturdido.

“Malditos cubatas”. Metió la mano en los bolsillos de la cazadora colgada en el perchero, basculó el contenido de cada cajón al suelo, cacheó la ropa en los armarios del dormitorio, miró dentro de los muebles de la cocina, un mue-

blecito que había en el cuarto de baño, pasó las palmas de las manos por los altillos buscando la cinta que no acababa de encontrar. Movió la cama del dormitorio, rajó el sofá... pero no encontró la dichosa cinta por lado alguno.

Cuando Roky se iba a ir rendido, oyó un ruido seco que provenía del cuarto de baño. Acababa de estar allí hacía un momento. Se acercó al baño y vio a un tipo con las patillas por debajo de las orejas, alerta como un animal. Aunque Roky había dejado de hacer deporte todavía mantenía cierta agilidad así que salió del piso y se tiró escaleras abajo. El de las patillas saltó de la bañera con un grito y un cuchillo en la mano intentando detenerlo. El tipo corría detrás gritándole que esperara, que lo esperara. Que quería hablar con él. Pero Roky no estaba por la labor.

Corriendo cruzó el barrio entero de Los Pingüinos. Cuando le pareció que le había dado esquinazo, Roky oteó alrededor, congestionado buscó el coche. Tras recuperar el aliento encendió un cigarrillo y se incorporó a la carretera del pueblo sin poner el intermitente.

Cuando llegó al pueblo, Elena le preguntó por el viaje. Respondió con generalidades. Nada más. Eso era lo peor para Roky porque quería hablar de lo sucedido en la incursión al piso de su viejo colega.

Tras un rato de titubeos y palabras mezcladas, Elena le dijo sin ensañarse: —Háblame de tu amigo.

Roky se acercó a la estantería y alcanzó un álbum de fotos. En pie pasó las pági-

—¿Y tú no has sido?

—¡Te juro por Dios que no!

Me lo encontré muerto.

—¿Entonces qué te importa que esté muerto ese desgraciado? A ti no quiero que te pase nada.

Elena le pasó la mano por la nuca.

—¿Y qué quieres que hagamos? ¿Llamo a la policía?

—Los denunciantes siempre son los perdedores. Si no has hecho nada no hace falta. La policía lo resolverá todo.

Hicieron el amor. Permanecieron en la cama tumbados primero sin hablar fumando y después bebiendo cervezas hablando de otras cosas.

A los dos días cuando Roky hojeaba La Crónica en el Andrew McIntyre bar de abajo se encontró nas. Los labios temblorosos con un titular que le llamó la atención. dejaron salir una voz compungida: Habían atrapado a un presunto asesino —¿Te acuerdas de éste? —le apuntó uno en la capital.

Se llamaba Agosto Montalcon pinta de rockero. bán.

—Cualquier conclusión es prematura pero creo que está claro —dijo el subinspector que llevaba el caso—. Ha aparecido el arma homicida, la sangre del cuchillo coincide con la de Agosto Montalbán y tenemos huellas. Al parecer se trata de un encargo, un matón a sueldo que le caerán sus años. Pero lo que nos falta por saber y no lo sabremos nunca es quién le encomendó el trabajo. No se desmoronó en el interrogatorio y eso a estas alturas ya no lo va a soltar. Los delincuentes de este tipo tienen más miedo a los suyos que a la Policía.

El agente de policía se lo ponía fácil a Roky. No conocía al asesino ni probablemente se volverían a ver, así que nunca se sabría que Roky había estado en casa del Makario aquella noche.

Respirando más tranquilo regresó al pueblo.

El domingo por la tarde llovía. Roky y Elena se quedaron en casa. Permanecían juntos en el sofá viendo un programa de televisión, Roky la miraba de reojo sin atender al aparato rumiando en darle más explicaciones. Ella como si adivinara los pensamientos de Roky le cogió la mano con firmeza. En unos segundos Roky se sintió seguro, una seguridad eterna aunque no fuera más que estar sentado en una silla en medio del desierto.

—Recogeré las reservas para Zamora.

El radio-casette ya no lo utilizaban. Hacía más de dos años que Elena había comprado un reproductor de CDS. Roky no cayó al primer golpe sobre quién lo pudo haber utilizado. Pero allí estaba, encima de la mesa de la cocina. Alguna pregunta quedaba en el aire pero Roky había decidido callarse. A quién importaba.

Merlin’s Gold Bernard Shaw Sitting in my old armchair with the cushions piled high behind my back, I was so taken in with my book that I forgot the place and the time. In other words, I was living with the characters in my book.

he story being told is about the wizard or as some call him Merlin the sorcerer.

Merlin is tied up with trying to make gold from base metals. He has tried lead because of its weight then copper because of its colour, with tin he had no luck. Try as hard as he could it was not possible for him to make gold out of any of the metals he experimented with.

Merlin’s apprentice suggested that his master Merlin should ask for help from someone that used metals every day.

-The blacksmith is always making things like horseshoes and suits of armory he should know about metals, why he even makes the rims for the wheel smith, -said the apprentice-.

Merlin looked at his apprentice for a few seconds then he made up his mind.

-Go and fetch the black smith -he told the apprentice-.

Off went the apprentice to the black smith and told him that Merlin wanted him to help make gold for King Arthur.

The black smith thought the whole thing was nonsense but he did not dare say no to someone like Merlin.

Going with some fear in his heart the smith went to Merlin.

-How would you turn metal into gold? Asked Merlin-.

-I do not know Sire -said the ho-

Merlin’s Gold Bernard Shaw then back to a black metal.

This answer gave Merlin an idea.

-Take this metal and show me how the metal changes its colour perhaps the secret to making gold is when it changes colour from white hot into a golden colour.

The smith went to Merlin’s charcoal fire and got the apprentice to pump the bellows to blow air into the coals. Soon a red-hot glow as the charcoal burnt fiercely in the fireplace. The smith took a piece of iron and with his tongs he pushed the metal into the middle of the glowing coals. The apprentice pumped away on the bellows sparks flew in the air above the metal the iron turned colour as the smith had said. Merlin watched each move that the smith made. The iron got very hot and changed colour nearly white and as the smith took the iron from the fire it slowly turned a golden colour.

Merlin took a handful of special herbs that he had got from the royal gardens and others that he had found in the woods around Camelot. Throwing the herbs onto the hot iron Merlin waited to see what effect they would have on the iron. The herbs quickly changed colour and burnt quickly away to ash. The iron as the smith had said changed its colour back from gold to black. Merlin being very disappointed told the smith to go back to his smiths and carry on making his horseshoes and his suits of armory.

The black smith trying to hide his relief at being told to go back to his work went on his way.

Merlin tried and tried with all kinds of metals to make gold. He never did find the secret that he so desperately seeked.

The apprentice after serving six long years in the service of Merlin was dismissed and went on his way. Merlin had been a good master but his search for

how to make gold was not to the apprentices liking.

Bernard Shaw Bernard Shaw was born in Dartford, Kent, England, in 1930 but, now, he is peacefully living in Autralia with his lovely wife after an erratic life which started in an orphanage. Cristo en el Lago de Genezaret

na de las máximas del Romanticismo es la grandeza de la naturaleza comparada con el ser humano. Esta obra sería una de las más significativas en este aspecto de Delacroix al mostrarnos la fuerza de una tormenta en el lago de Genezaret. La barca, en una intensa diagonal, parece ir a la deriva mientras los apóstoles intentan recoger las velas para evitar su rotura. Ante tanto movimiento, Cristo permanece dormido plácidamente en la proa, iluminado su tranquilo rostro por el halo que rodea su cabeza. De esta forma, Delacroix contrapone la luz cristiana frente a las tinieblas del pecado. Al margen de significados simbólicos, esta obra destaca por el excelente estudio cromático y lumínico al mostrarnos una amplísima

gama de azules. Con largas pinceladas crea las nubes, las olas o el fondo ribereño, obteniendo un conjunto difícilmente superable.

Aparte de su excelente cromatismo y luminosidad, me emociona la grandeza de la naturaleza y la fuerza que emerge del objetivo focal, elementos magníficamente plasmados por Delacroix. Esta pintura me produce emociones encontradas de angustia, fuerza y sosiego.

Delacroix es, en definitiva, fantástico y de gran actualidad ya que evolucionó a un estilo que sienta las bases del movimiento impresionista, su influencia está presente en maestros como Cézanne, Degas, Matisse y en las obras de Picasso.

Alenza representa, con su vida atormentada, el arquetipo de pintor romántico. Sin em bargo, muchas de sus obras son una burla de la exageración de los sentimientos que trajo el Roman ticismo. El escritor Javier Payeras se inspira en este cuadro para su relato.

e cuesta respirar. Tomo un libro, luego lo alejo, salto por sus páginas y luego me siento a respirar, y no puedo.

Leo desconsolado por mi inutilidad.

Ahogado el cerebro, ahora escribo apopléjico. Se alejan todos mis deseos, siento ganas de ahogarme en el río Ouse, pero me causan remordimiento las cosas que no veré al día siguiente.

Se me quiebran los nervios y no me ajusto.

Escribo un relato y, si me permito el lujo de terminarlo, me dará algunos días de felicidad.

The Death of Sardanapalus

Todd Camplin Eugene Delacroix’s oil on canvas titled The Death of Sardanapalus is approximately 12’1” by 16’3”, was finished in 1827, and is currently displayed in Paris at the Louvre.

In this article, I will show the methods used in the Delacroix’s image, influences that inspired the image, and the power structure the image is promo ting.

I

n talking about a work of art, method is always a helpful way to some insight into a work. Vignette from the root meaning vine, originally the word refers to a border of a decorated book, but in the case of Delacroix, vignette is a method of creating an image that makes a detail rendered objects in the center that becomes less define on the edges. Cultural historians Charles Rose and Henri Zerner write that the vignette style was adopted by painters because of the utilization metaphors of infinity and fragmentation 1. In this painting the vignette style helps to focus everything around the foot of the bed and then fades into black on the edge of the painting.

The fade in the painting suggest the image moves beyond the edge of the canvas. This is a suggestion that implies that this ‘Oriental’ image is bleeding into the space of the viewer.

The painting is in a vortex like composition. The vortex is in direct contrast to the European painting style of balance and order. The style suggests the idea of a chaotic world in contrast to an ordered world of Europe.

Influences also help to understand the thoughts of the artist. Delacroix had read Lord Byron’s tragedy of Sardanapalus, and although the painting is not a direct quotation of Byron’s work, the subject matter was on Delacroix mind. Also, as of the result of Napoleon’s victory in

Egypt, Napoleon brought many antiquates to Europe. Delacroix had read accounts and seen objects from the ‘Orient.’

Delacroix, up to this point, had not visited the ‘Orient’, so this painting is more of a collage of his knowledge of Eastern culture. Some of the things Delacroix lumps together are a table with an Egyptian winged sun, the cupbearer wears an Indian turban, a Moor wears and Egyptian style hood, and the elephants decorations on the bed are from Indian 2. RoseMarie and Rainer Hagen point out that the painting gives a vague sense of the ‘Orient,’ and everything in the painting is anything non-European.

There are key issues of power that Delacroix deals with in this painting. In Art through the Age, Delacroix’s painting is described as a pictorial grand opera on a colossal scale. The scale of the orgiastic destruction 3 of the Funeral pyre had never been scene by the Salon public.

Scale can be a method of showing power for a weak argument. For example, Russian ballets or the American Superbowl have been produced in large scale to show the invented tradition of national pride. Sardanapalus was to be depicted as an unrestricted hedonistic superman.

The funeral pyre seems to indicate Sardanapalus could take his possessions with

Sardanapalus is the subject of the painting and all other things in the paintings are shown as things including the women. This painting may reflect some of Delacroix frustrations with women. To paraphrase Delacroix, he said a woman is a pretty passion and the ruin of man. His own failed relationships and the European norm of women inequality help influence this work, but the work also is a comparative study of Europe verses the ’Orient.’ The painting does imply the statement that women are not equal, but at least we (Europeans) don’t take our possession (women) and destroy them after our (men’s) deaths. At the same time the image does fantasies the question, but what if we (men) could possess women like Sardanapalus?

Methods, influences, and power help to repaint Delacroix’s The Death of Sardanapalus with insight of Delacroix’s thoughts and the culture he was helping promote. Delacroix intended to shock his audience with this image, and if new viewers are not careful Delacroix could manages to re-shock a contemporary audience because of our (everyone) knowledge of his motivations. We should not pity Delacroix for his perspective of the European/Orient dichotomy he held, but we should learn from him and not make the same mistakes.

The idea of becoming important in the art world is illusive, perplexing, and meaningless.

hat one, with determination and talent, can be plucked out of obscurity by jeweled hands, and thrust into a world that holds art in highest regard is ideal, for the painter, but not a reality.

There are many good, and even great painters; artists. They have skill, they can paint a life, and the story behind it; a bead of water, rolling down a leaf in such detail as to render the viewer stunned by the artists' hand. But still, I think most (modern) painters find it difficult to extract three dimensional meaning from a 2 dimensional medium. Géricault was not one of them.

A painting has been brought to my attention by an acquaintance of mine, and I'd like to take a moment to write a little bit about it. The Raft of the Medusa was a painting that Géricault completed in his early to mid-twenties (incredible, non?).

A controversial work that depicted a French shipwreck, where the captain had left the passengers and crew to die. I know that the work depicts a formidable tragedy, but it is the way in which he tells the story that is so romantic, yet undoubtedly scathing. Of course the rendering

has a classicisists hand, but it also has a skeptics tongue. As bodies lay strewn about, the living wrestle to stay afloat upon the choppy, writhing waves of the sea. The sky is part gray, and black, and blue, and pale human flesh drift wanly out of scene, as the sorrowful dead float like spectors, that glide over corruption.

This painting has an unrivaled richness of meaning. I believe it to be

psychologically arresting, heart-breaking, beautiful, and utterly satisfying. I do not want to get into it any further, because I see myself in it, and only I know me.

Cuando los días empiezan a ser largos, cuando empieza a oler a primavera, mis pies me llevan al Retiro, el parque de mi infancia.

uizá porque no pasan coches o quizá porque no hay muchas cosas nuevas que puedan acontecer en un parque, el Retiro es el lugar de Madrid que menos ha cambiado desde que soy pequeño: ha pasado bastante tiempo.

Aún veo guardias a caballo, quioscos, parejas de enamorados, viejecitas dando de comer a los pájaros, jóvenes patinando y, sobre todo, niños jugando.

Entro por Doctor Castelo y el mundo vuelve a ser mío. Allí están los columpios donde yo también jugaba de pequeño justo a la derecha- y más adelante la gran calle que se dirije a la estatua del Ángel Caido, donde yo también monté en bicicleta y, años antes, en triciclo.

Sigo hacia el Ángel y a la izquierda veo el antiguo zoo de Madrid donde una vez di de comer a un elefante que no tenía colmillo. Eran tiempos en que no era peligroso dar de comer a los animales o, si lo era, nadie nos lo dijo.

Veo la estatua, única en el mundo, repi-

ten, caída y bella, aún mirando al cielo, al cielo azul madrileño que no deja de ser hermoso aunque los edificios impidan verlo. Entonces, me acuerdo del olor a rosas, de las mil y una rosas que hay cerca... Entro. ¡Son tantas variedades! Tienen nombres preciosos que nunca puedo recordar, nombres literarios y mitológicos. Mi abuela me los contaba de pequeño, hace ya mucho tiempo. Después, los he

buscado en enciclopedias, ahora en internet... siempe se me olvidan, pero no su olor sus inimitables colores, su eterna y singular belleza sobre tallo de espinas.

He estado en muchas ciudades del mundo, nunca he visto una rosaleda semejante, quizá porque nunca he amado a otra como a ésta. Al fin y al cabo, uno ama lo conocido y el parque del Retiro guarda para mí demasiados recuerdos... demasiada vida.

ara mí, por una parte....arte es la proyeccion que la mente realiza a través del pensamiento consciente, siendo trasmitida por el sujeto con habilidades a él inhertes.

Y por otra parte cualquier individuo es portador de arte, posiblemente en cualquier acción, expresión, reflexion, pensamiento, en algún instante, o en muchos momentos de su vida, al desarrollar una actividad, al conjugar...pensamiento, habilidad y satisfacción, genera un momento de arte, a lo mejor no perceptible para los demás, pero posiblemente si para él hasta inconscintemente......arte o belleza expresada para la satisfacción personal del propio sujeto. Arte en estado puro.!!

Pensamiento, ingenio, satisfacción, fuerza creativa, artista ó genio, especialista de un estilo ó una técnica, mero observador ó ilustre soñador, imaginación, voluntad, deseo ó necesidad de plasmar y transmitir y así más.... y más....y más.....!!!,elementos, elogios, complementos, clasificaciones....Arte, no es solo una etiqueta ó un titulo, es sentimientos, es pasion, es fuerza, son palabras, sonidos, emociones, son sueños, son mentiras o verdades, y bastante más.....

La verdad es que los grandes maestros nos han otorgado grandes momentos a través de su legado, sin ser ellos conocedores del valor otorgado por el paso del tiempo y la sociedad, pero quisiera pensar que ellos realizaron sus obras no pensando en un legado ó en altares, sino en su momento creativo personal. Arte en estado puro.!!, sin transformaciones, sin comedias, sin valores, tan solo él ó ella y su momento.

or me, on the one hand….art is the projection of the mind through conscious thought, being passed on through a created object.

And on the other hand....every person is an artist, meaning they have this innate ability within themselves. Some are aware and some are not. Of those who are, some do and some don’t feel the need to express this outside of themselves. This is art in its pure state.

Art starts with a thought, then a style, followed by a technique.

Then the artist wishes to express outwardly from an inner need or desire. He can be an observer or a day-dreamer who ultimately produces an art form.

Art, is not only a label or a title; it is feelings, passion, force, words, sounds, emotions, dreams, lies or truths and even more .....

The truth is that the great teachers have granted us great moments through their legacy, without possibly being aware of the enormous gift they were leaving humanity.

It is likely that their works were created for the purpose of expressing their personal vision in art form for their own pleasure. It is only trough the passage of time that their works have become so famous.

This is Art in a pure state, without judgements, transformations, comedies, values, or labels, only his/her momentary perception in its purity.

Andrew McIntyre WhAT’s The ART?

F

Art is a key to my survival. I indulged in painting from an early age, encouraged by my father, a chartered accountant, who was also a skilled watercolorist and oil painter. After a very successful career in business, my father died in 1974. His pallet knife oils hang in my mother’s house, the only tangible remains of his life. Between the ages of 8 and 12, I had a superb Art teacher at the Downs School, Colwall, the formidable Miss Hubbard.

Thereafter Art was a joyous hobby I pursued, while my education became designed towards a “practical” career. But I sketched, I experimented, I occasionally produced a watercolor.

About 12 years ago, unable to continue the path I had taken, I experienced a major life crisis. In appalling personal circumstances, I began to produce Art with intent different from previous years.

Art was now a necessity, a raison d’être. Art gets me though the week, resto-

Andrew McIntyre ring dreams and hopes, the beauty of creation from the sad pallor of daily routine.

I have two main influences, the Mandelbrot Set and Magic Realism. The former inspires me to reflect the confluence of microcosm with macrocosm, the universe as a series of repeated mandala patterns; the latter is the indefinable fusion of magic with reality. Painting in the dim light late at night, 18 hours after I got up, the end of my work week, I see images I did not plan,

I wonder if others will perceive as I do, I change the light, other forms emerge layered in the presence of dimensions that reveal themselves, seemingly beyond my control. Paint the medium. I appreciate the infinity of definition, the beauteous liberty, the great path Art has provided since earliest times. Art is the unifier, a current that can never be extinguished.

Andrew McIntyre was educated in England, Scotland, Japan, and the USA, gaining master’s degrees in Economics and Comparative Literature. He lives in San Francisco. After a career teaching, he switched to retail to dedicate more time to writing and Art. His painting is inspired by the patterns of Nature, their connection with human iconography. omance, pasión, sentimientos que nos mueven. A veces con alegría y entusiasmo, otras un poco tristes y desganados. Pero para mi el romance, el amor, la pasión son emociones que me mueven, a escribir una carta, a leer un poema, a trabajar con un cristal, a crear un objeto para demostrar este sentimiento, o como ahora estar aquí escribiendo estas palabras para ustedes.

Pasión es crear algo nunca antes pensado, cruzar un océano, pelear las batallas más complejas y temerarias, nos hace vivir.

Acá les dejo una muestra de las cosas que me apasionan.

Con amor he hecho estos corazones, que reflejan el profundo amor que siento y el mucho amor que he recibido. Y el color Rosa el color del chakra del corazón entrega al que lo lleve amor, el que calma las penas del corazón y el que te regocija con las buenas nuevas del amor.

When I started crocheting (selftaught, by the way), I had to dive in and learn by reading instruction books. Lots of reading, trial and error, lots of mistakes, and you finally get the hang of it. And that was over 20 years ago! After alot of practice I finally got it. I cannot stress the importance of practicing. Designing, creating and crocheting amigurumi patterns gives me a real sense of satisfaction. I see the project in rough form to completion. It is an incredible feeling to have that sense of accomplishment. And when people see my amigurumi and I receive positive comments, it makes it all worth the time and effort.

have always loved animals, and so being able to recreate some of my favourite animals with nothing more than yarn and a crochet hook is a wonderful feeling. I love to challenge myself to come up with new creations. Designing patterns keeps me fresh and inspired, and stops me from becoming bored with crochet. I find inspiration from visiting zoos and farms, watching nature documentaries, and exploring the countryside looking for wild animals and birds. The natural world is so vast and beautiful that I don’t think I will ever run out of inspiration!

Amigurumi is one of the simplest forms of crochet to master – it only uses the simplest stitch (single crochet) and each piece of the toy is typically formed by working in a continuous spiral, without joining at the end of each round. The pieces are then stitched together to form the finished animal.

Crochet is good for your health - forming the repetitive stitches over and over is very relaxing and can lower stress levels.

About 5 years ago, I bought a ‘learn to crochet’ book and taught myself how to crochet. As soon as I discovered it was possible to make crocheted animals, all my other hobbies took a back seat to my

new passion. I am a qualified technical writer, so it comes naturally for me to share my designs by creating clear, accurate patterns.

Amigurumi is a Japanese style of crocheting (or knitting) stuffed animals. The word ‘amigurumi’ comes from a combination of the Japanese words ami, meaning crocheted or knitted, and nuigurumi, meaning stuffed doll. Most amigurumi have a very simplified cute and cartoon-like appearance. I like to give my designs more of a realistic shape and appearance many hours of work. hy do you love designing amigurumi crochet patterns?

I have two little girls (Oli's 6 and Martina's 2), and a husband, and a dog!

So I really don't have much time (or patience) for long projects. I like amigurumi because they're fast to make, and a great way of using up leftover yarn, plus they're super cute.

-Is it difficult?

Not really, al you need to know is simple crochet, and simple increasing and decreasing. With a little practice anyone can make them.

-Is it good for health?

I think so, it's very calming to just sit around with a hook some yarn and think about toys!

-Where have you learnt this technique?

I learned to crochet when I was 6 or 7. A neighbor taught me back in Montevideo, Uruguay, where I'm from.

-Can you explain us something about the origins of this Japanese technique?

I guess crocheters have been making toys for a long while. The particular thing about amigurumi is that they're crocheted in simple crochet and all in the round, without joining rounds. They usually have big heads and eyes and are super kawaii!

I think pretty much all my amigurumi are romantic, in the sense that they're not too "rational", and help me use my imagination without any established rules or realism... But my little Valentine Bears would be the most romantic looking pair in the most widely use of t h e word.

I made them for Valentine's day a couple of years ago.

Pienso que los sentimientos siempre son impulso para realizar cualquier acción de arte, si bien la orfebrería requiere mucho tiempo cada pieza, en mi caso muchas de ellas han sido motivadas por sentimientos de cariño y afecto a quienes me piden que realice una pieza, principalmente de amistad. ¿Qué opinas del Romanticismo? ¿Cuál es tu artista o autor favorito de este periodo? ¿Qué obra?

La verdad que de este movimiento rescato al músico Ludwi g van Beethoven, de sus obras innumerables y muy conocidas, lo escucho de niña ya que mi padre era un admirador de su música, por lo tanto puedo decir que crecí junto a su música.

Our gardens are full of marvelous trees which have been venerated during centuries.

In Yareah magazine/January, we started to know and see their poetic secrets by analyzing Robert Graves’ famous essay “The White Goddess - a Historical Grammar of Poetic Myth” and what he calls “The al phabet of trees” in Celtic Druidic culture (leers were known by the name of a tree which started with its same initial. For example, “duir” -our oak- was also the leer “D” and “saille” –our willow- was the leer “S”). We explained that this alphabet had five vowels and thirteen consonants and the reasons why these last ones formed a magic seasonal calendar based on trees and “Mother Nature” which was secretly used

by Druids for centuries, even after Christian irrup tion... they had to hide their magic words and spells of their enemies to prevent their possible aacks, a belief shared by old Greek and Roman religions.

he number of January was dedicated to the first holly tree and consonant letter of that Neolithic calendar: to the birch, called “Beth” and which represented the letter “B”. Logically, in the number of February we studied the second tree and letter of the Celtic Druidic alphabet: the wild ash tree, “Luis”-letter “L”; in the number of March, we focused on the third holly tree: the ASH, called “Nion”- letter “N” and in April, our protagonist was the ALDER, called “Fearn”- letter “F”.

Now, in May, we are going to study the WILLOW, “SAILLE”, letter “S”.

In Greece, the willow was dedicated to Hecate, Circe, Hera and Persephone, all of them in relationship with the death. The

witches were very fond of willows and in English language, the words “witch” and “wicked” come from “willow”…, also “wicker”.

According with Northern European legends, witches’ brooms were made of: -a stick of ash tree (see our issue of March) to protect them of drowns (the only way to kill a witch), -branches of birch (see our issue of January) to tie demons among them, -and ropes of willow…, to honor the Death.

Druidic human sacrifices were realized during full moon, in baskets of wicker and with cutting stones shaped as willow leaves.

The willow (helice in Greek language, and

salix in Latin) gave name to Helicon, home of the Nine Muses, orgiastic priestesses of the Goddess Moon.

After studying old coins from Crete, where Europe (Eur-opa means woman with wide face, therefore “full moon”) appears sitting on a willow and rejecting the love of an eagle, A. B. Cook suggests that not only is Europe the Moon but Eu-rope, or woman with flourishing wickers, is Helice, sister of Amalthea: we should not forget that to wear a tiny branch of willow on the hat protects men of the jealousy of the Moon.

This fifth holly tree dominated from the 15th of April to the 12th of May. The 1st of May, famous in old times by its orgies, is in the middle of this druidic month.

I make sculptural handbuilt ceramics.

Large vessels are often build by using a "double wall" technique, which allows me to do unusual cuttings a n d twistings.

In this way the art-pieces can play with the illusion of form and intrigue the spectator to interact more closely with the work.

Another line of work is my "growth-stones". I got this idea back in 1999 and I am still triggered by the way the pots and plants together creates an aestetically and pleasing whole.

Why are you so interested in dancing broken asymmetric sculptures?

The assymmetry in my art work is a way to stop the continually moving dance of life, to capture what the movements would look like, as if time had frozen.

I believe assymmetry to be more of a challenge, and therefore a greater satisfaction to build and explore.

Most of the time, I think upon my brain like a whole, but I know it is composed of two very different parts, and they are assymmetrical to each other, in here my thoughts are dancing and breaking their way around, -Romanticism was a strong dialogue between life and death. Do you think every person is broken or dancing between these two realities?

You could say that, the dance is broken, when we don't realise that death is only a transmission of the soul from this density or dimension to another one.

The life of a person can be seen broken as long as the spirit or soul is sleeping.

I believe every person has an immortal part to it, call it soul or spirit, and realising this is the biggest life changing experience you can have.

For me life sees driven by unseen forces, energy and spirit, so asymmetry in movement and dance keep the motion going on.

-What is your favourite romantic artist?

Why? My favourite romantic artist, oh yes more to choose among, Goethe is high about them all, but that is more in his scientific approach toward the nature, not as an artist, I could recommend a painter like William Blake, and I love the fact, that he didn't go to school, but

was educated at home by his mother, I think it was.

In the works of Blake I see an originality and a tendency to embrace both his poetry and paintings in a mystical and symbolical language. I like that a lot.

And I like the painting from "The song of Los".

-Which subject used to inspire you the most: life or death?

I feel deeply attracted by life.

As an artist, I find a huge satisfaction from my interaction with nature. Like the watching of the unfolding life in a plant. The process from seed to plant withholds a big mystery of life for me.

My evergoing fascination of the information that is contained in a seed - for the future potentials given the right conditions - of a full grown and also seed producing plant. This is an amazing repeting celebration of life itself.

As my ceramic art often has shapes, forms and twists, build upon observations from what nature so wisely will do, when it is unspoiled , - I must draw the conclusion that I am driven and inspired by life.

Interview: ARTS/ARTE INTERVIEW Anne-Marie Nygaard Eilertsen http://www.eilertsen-gobelin.eu/ Born in Copenhagen, Denmark, 1954. Autodidact. I have been weaving tapestries since 1978. The themes have varied. I started off very concentrated on surrealism, which is where I am now - once again. In between I have been describing the clash between nature and culture. Later on the human body - with all its personal secrets hidden carefully. This in its own mysterious ways led to a stay in Tokyo ( sponsored by Toyota), where I had the totally unique opportunity to study sumowrestlers - even outside the ring. A series of pictures with "movementcalligraphy" (my own invention) was the result. Somehow the strict rituals in the ancient sumowrestling must have led to my passion for the Spanish corrida - in its true, skilled form, not the tourist version! Dance of death, strong wills and colors, cojones, heredados and rituals, traceable thousands of years back. Due to very drastic circumstances in my life I am now concentrating on "El Lobo Interior", symbolic, surrealistic pictures from a not very pleasant background.

-Who is your favourite romantic artist? Any special work?

My favorite romantic artist is the Danish painter Johan Thomas Lundby. His paintings of Danish nature and landscapes have a very special kind of glow.

He was also drawing pictures of people - showing "the flow of feelings" of the romanticism. Among those one of a poor girl selling matches. The Danish tale-writer Hans Christian Andersen ( whose first teacher was in fact my grand-grand-grandgrand-grand-dad) happened to see this particular drawing and wrote his tale "The little match-seller".

Which of course gives me a special relation to the drawing. Sadly enough J.T. Lundby is not very known outside Denmark.

-Which subject used to inspire you the most: life or death?

In the period of my life when I was concentrated on the Spanish corrida, I was stunned with the ritual of the "preset scene of death". One had to die-man or bull. And in the arena almost working together on this "project". The theme that especially inspired me was the ancient pre-Christianity-rituals of bringing life through death. But besides that life is the strongest and most interesting inspiration with all its uncountable possibilities of bliss or disaster.

Why did you decide to weave "El Ojo del Lobo" "The eye of the wolf? What is its deep meaning?

"Ojo del Lobo" was a picture I had to make during a very difficult period of my life. It is part of a series of 5 pictures with the name "El Lobo Interior". All the different parts of the picture are of course symbolic and rather personal.

-Romanticism was a strong dialogue between life and death. Do you think every person has a wild animal devouring his/her guts or, in an opposite sense, is this wild animal which gives us strength and wisdom? “Ojo del Lobo�, for example, is dealing with different aspects of woman-wolf: one part letting your inner wolf devour your best qualities - due to rigid morality. The other part letting you see yourself, your life and your relations through the eyes of the true wolf - with honesty, clear sight, strength and love. This is in fact a struggle between

¿Amor para siempre?

Montse de Paz ToldRA Estamos en primavera, y el amor es un tema que llena la calle, la publi cidad y hasta las páginas de los periódicos. Pocos temas son tan re currentes en la literatura, la filosofía y el arte. Hoy se especula mucho sobre su peculiar naturaleza. Muchos desearían que fuera eterno, pero también el amor ha caído en esta cultura de lo rápido y lo efímero, del “todo es relativo” y el “nada es para siempre”.

Muchos dicen que el amor para siempre no existe. Incluso estudios científicos sugieren que el amor apasionado del enamoramiento y de los recién casados es caduco, y que dura como mucho entre dos y cuatro años, antes de caer en la rutina. Para muchas personas, las malas experiencias de pareja y el creciente aumento de los fracasos de las relaciones matrimoniales parecen una demostración de que el amor, como todo, nunca es definitivo y eterno. Algunos, aún más decepcionados o heridos, llegan a afirmar que, en realidad, el amor absoluto y eterno, tal como lo entendían los románticos, en realidad es una falacia, y no existe. Otros sostienen que es un invento de las religiones y las culturas para asegurar la estabilidad de las familias y el matrimonio, como si la infidelidad y la volubilidad fueran connaturales al ser humano.

No soy una experta psicóloga, ni filósofa, ni antropóloga. Pero me atrevo a afirmar, contra viento y marea, y con todas mis fuerzas, que el amor para siempre sí existe, y que el amor, si es auténtico, no puede hacer otra cosa que dejar de crecer.

Buscando las raíces del amor Me gusta comparar el amor con un árbol que, si se va regando y se cuida, crece día a día, sin cesar. Cuanto más viejo, más grande, más frondoso, más bello. Y entre sus ramas y hojas anidan nuevas vidas,

proyectos, sueños y realidades. Un amor auténtico como roble crecido y fuerte puede resistir los embates de las tempestades, del tiempo y de la sequía. Un amor sólido lo resiste todo.

Por supuesto, ese árbol ha necesitado algo para crecer. Ha necesitado, además del potencial que lleva inscrito en sus genes, de alimento, agua y tiempo. Así es el amor humano. Como el fuego, sólo necesita alimentarse. Si se va avivando, sólo puede acrecentarse más y más. El tiempo no lo agota, sino que lo engrandece.

Antes de seguir, debo hacer un alto para precisar qué entendemos por amor. El amor no es sólo pura química, atracción o deseo. Tampoco es un sentimiento más o menos intenso y placentero. No es mera poesía. El amor engloba todo esto y algo más, que forma su genuina y auténtica raíz. Las diversas religiones han definido el amor con palabras bellas y certeras. El amor es donación. El amor es generosidad, es entrega de sí mismo. Es amistad, es confianza, es compartir. El amor es también ternura, es intercambio, es comunicación. El amor es belleza creadora, trabajo, pensamiento. Hay amor en el beso de un enamorado, en la caricia de una madre y en una obra de arte bien hecha. Hay amor en el trabajo hecho con amor, en la cortesía, en el sacrificio. Hay amor, también, en el cumplimiento de un deber, aunque éste se haga con esfuerzo.

Si lo pensamos bien, estamos rodeados

de amor. El mundo, a pesar de sus lacerantes contradicciones, está inundado de amor. Decía el teólogo y científico Teilhard de Chardin que el amor es como el nervio que recorre y anima todo el universo. Todo cuanto existe está traspasado por la vena del amor. Como han escrito algunos literatos, es la fuerza que mueve el cosmos, aquello que mantiene al mundo girando sobre sí.

La naturaleza del amor ¿Cuál es la naturaleza del amor? De nuevo la mística y la literatura nos arrojan luz sobre las cualidades de esta fuerza, que es mucho más que química y sentimientos. San Pablo, en su célebre “Himno al Amor” (o cántico de la caridad, como se ha traducido en otras versiones), nos explica que el amor es paciente, fuerte, incansable, generoso. El amor no lleva cuentas del mal, no se irrita, no se enorgullece, no es egoísta. Todo lo aguanta, todo lo resiste, todo lo espera y todo lo cree. Nos muestra un amor dulce, sereno, tierno, y a la vez vigoroso hasta el límite.

Si volvemos a otros poetas, veremos que el amor es una energía poderosa que supera las barreras de la muerte. Dice Quevedo en uno de sus sonetos que, el día que muera, “polvo seré, mas polvo enamorado”. Shakespeare escribe bellamente sobre la cualidad inagotable del amor: “Cuanto más te doy, más tengo, porque este amor es infinito”.

El amor no es un simple valor, ni algo re-

MYTHS and legends/MITOS y leyendas lativo. El amor es un concepto trascendente, que supera nuestras limitaciones humanas. ¿Cuántas veces hemos oído de personas que han rozado la heroicidad por amor? El amor hace cometer locuras y actos que parecen ilógicos. El amor incondicional de tantas madres, el amor del que da la vida para salvar otras, el amor no correspondido e incansable de tantas personas que han amado sin esperar nada a cambio… sobrepasa la racionalidad humana. El amor es un poco (o un mucho) loco. Dice Jesús que “no hay mayor amor que el de aquel que da la vida por sus amigos”. En nuestros términos cartesianos y puramente humanos, ese amor no cabe. Y, sin embargo, todos sabemos de qué se trata. Todos anhelamos ese amor, en el fondo de nuestro corazón, y tal vez hemos conocido a personas que viven o han vivido este amor

auténtico. Muchas son las parejas que podrían hablarnos de él. Y saben que el amor traspasa la misma vida, y va más allá de la muerte. El amor real es para siempre.

Amor es querer Precisamente por su naturaleza, sólo necesita ser alimentado para nutrirse y multiplicarse. Es algo tan sencillo… ¡y tan difícil de hacer en la práctica! ¿Por qué mueren tantos amores? Tal vez, en sus inicios, eran genuinos y sinceros. Pero se dejaron apagar, hasta que fueron irrecuperables. La perseverancia en el amor, día a día, en los detalles pequeños, en los contratiempos y en las alegrías, es buena parte del secreto para mantener viva la llama, aseguran los miembros de la mayoría de parejas que alcanzan una feliz vejez siguiendo enamorados. Pero para alimentar el amor, es preciso algo más que sentirlo. Porque muchas veces cuesta, no apetece o resulta complicado, porque hay que renunciar a otras cosas que quieren invadir nuestra vida, incluso a nuestra comodidad momentánea.

El amor, en realidad, es una cuestión de querer. Y hablo del querer voluntarioso.

Querer es un acto de voluntad.

Si quieres, puedes.

Si quieres, amas.

Quien quiere hacer algo, no importa los obstáculos que se presenten, lo conseguirá, tarde o temprano. Quien quiere amar, sin duda, lo consigue.

Para vivir amando es preciso aprender, y no hay mejor escuela que la práctica, ni mejor maestro que el ejemplo. Por eso, en nuestro mundo de hoy, hambriento de amor, que busca la ternura a menudo por caminos equivocados, es urgente y necesario educarse y educar a nuestros niños y jóvenes para aprender la ciencia más importante de todas: el arte de amar. Buenos maestros no nos faltan.

by Schubert and represented by Schumann, Mendelssohn and Chopin, and (2) toward the spectacular and grandiose in opera and symphony as established by Beethoven and represented by Meyerbeer, Berlioz, Liszt and Wagner.

Vocal Music Grand Opera Grand opera began with Daniel Auber's (1782-1871) Le Muette de Portici (1828) in which a dumb girl leaped into the erupting Vesuvius. Rossini's last opera, William Tell (1929), was an attempt to imitate this popular new style characterized by (a) obligatory spectacular scenes, (b) death, not happy endings, in librettos by Scribe, (c) potpourri overture, (d) extended ornate arias, (e) chorus and ballet, and (f) a new heavier type of dramatic tenor as the featured hero.

Other opera were Giacomo Meyerbeer's (1791-1864) Robert le Diable (1831), Les Huguenots (1836) and Le Prophète (1849), and Jacques Halévy's (1799-1862) La Juive (1835).

Italian Opera Orchestral accompaniment used throughout the opera broke down the distinction between recitative and aria, resulting in long formally flexible sections in Vincenzo Bellini's (1801-35) Norma (1831), La Sonnambula (1831) and I Puritani (1835) and Gaetano Donizetti's (1797-1848) Lucia di Lammermore (1835).

German opera Sentimental light operas were Hans Heiling (1833) by Heinrich Marshner (17951861), Zar und Zimmerman (1837) by Albert Lortzing (180151) and Martha (1847)

by Friedrich von Flotow (1812-83). Richard Wagner's (1813-83) Rienzi 1840) was a grand opera, and Der fliegende Holländer (1842) was in the Weber tradition.

Russian Opera Russian opera was established by Michael Glinka (1804-57) in A Life for the Tsar (1836) and Russlan and Lyudmilla (1842), the first realization of nationalism in music.

Oratorio Influenced by Bach and Handel, Felix Mendelssohn (1809-47) composed the sentimental oratorios St. Paul (1836) and Elijah (1846).

Also considered a secular oratorio is The Damnation of Faust (1846) by Hector Berlioz (1803-69).

Choral Music Secular cantatas were Mendelssohn's Erste Walpurgisnacht (1832) and Robert Schumann's (1803-56) Paradise and the Peri (1843) and Scenes from Goethe's "Faust" (1844-53). Important liturgical music were Rossini's Stabat Mater (1832) and the huge Requiem (1837) of Berlioz.

French Song The first French song cycle was Berlioz Les Nuits d'Été (1841). It became the first orchestral song cycle when he orchestrated it in 1856.

Instrumental Music Piano Sonata form almost disappeared and was replaced by collections of unrelated single movements in a completely idiomatic piano style.

examples, but both men composed other important works for combinations of strings alone or with piano.

Concerto In the classical form with written out cadenzas, concertos showed the romantic piano idiom in Schumann's concerto (1845), Chopin's Op. 11 (1830) and Op. 21 (1829) and Mendelssohn's Op 25 (1831) and Op. 40 (1837). Mendelssohn also composed a Violin Concerto (1844).

Symphony The clearest change from the Viennese classic tradition came in the Symphonie fantastique (1830) of Berlioz, which showed all the features of romanticism: (a) tempo rubato, (b) frequent tempo changes, (c) chromaticism, (d) a new mastery of orchestral color, (e) the idée fixe, a unifying motive used in all five movements, (f) transformation as opposed to development of theme (melodies were of such distinctive character they resisted development, and (g) the use of a complete descriptive program.

Formally, it was still a normal symphony with two scherzo movements, but with a new thematic unity. His Harold in Italy (1834) was a viola concerto while Romeo and Juliet (1840) used chorus and vocal soloists.

Andrew McIntyre Though most of the titles are not authentic, Mendelssohn's Songs without Words (182945) contained 48 song-like pieces. Schumann added his own titles in Papillons (1830-31), Carnival (1835) and Kinderscenen (1838).

Frédéric Chopin (1810-49) also preferred short forms, as in Nocturnes (1830-46), Impromptu (1834-43) and 24 Preludes, Op. 28 (1839) in all the major and minor keys. He established romantic piano idiom through use of (a) tempo rubato, (b) chromaticism, (c) free modulation,

(d) creative use of the damper pedal, and (e) melodies from dance or song in (f) a completely homophonic texture.

Preferred dances were waltz (19), polonaise (13) and mazurka (51). Longer single-movement forms were the ballade (4 examples) and scherzo (4 examples). He also composed sets of etudes: Op. 10 (1829-32) and Op. 25 (183236). Schumann also composed etudes, including Etudes symphoniques (1834).

Chamber Music The string quartet was still preferred by Schumann with three and Mendelssohn with seven

The symphonies of Schumann and Mendelssohn used descriptive titles, as in Schumann's No. 1 "Spring" (1841) and No. 3 "Rhenish" (1850) and Mendelssohn's No. 3 Scotch" (1842), No. 4 "Italian" (1833) and No. 5 "Reformation" (1832), but maintained the basic form of the classic symphony without either thematic or programmatic unity.

Overture While Beethoven's overtures and Mendelssohn's Overture to A Midsummer Night's Dream (1826) were written to precede theatrical performances, Mendelssohn's Hebrides (1832) and Berlioz' Roman Carnival (1844) were character pieces in modified sonata-allegro form composed for concert use.

ROMANNTICISM (VIII) Romantic poets cultivated individualism, reverence for the natural world, idealism, physical and emotional passion, and an interest in the mystic and supernatural… The Romantic era produced many of the stereotypes of poets and poetry that exist to this day (i.e., the poet as a highly tortured and melancholy visionary). Romantic ideals never specifically died out in poetry, but were largely absorbed into the precepts of many other movements. Traces of romanticism lived on in French symbolism and surrealism and in the work of prominent poets such as Charles Baudelaire and Rainer Maria Rilke. poets.org

uando se estudia la poesía épica latina se aprende que a Virgilio y su Eneida les siguieron obras y autores que no salieron de recrear lo que parecía ya insuperable. Se produjo entonces un cierto agotamiento literario. Contra esto se dio una reacción “romántica”, de oposición a lo que se venía haciendo, una reacción frente a lo clásico y modélico. Aquí se presenta lo romántico como oposición a lo clásico. Es como escribió Lucano la Farsalia. Lucano era un joven cordobés sobrino de Séneca. Tío y sobrino tuvieron semejante fin, el suicidio en medio de la represión de Nerón. Esto también tiene bastante de romántico. Lucano le daba la vuelta a todo lo dicho hasta entonces, los buenos eran malos y los malos buenos. Tras un Calígula o un Nerón anhelaba la restauración de la antigua República romana. Lo dicho, hubo que cortarse las venas.

Pero el romanticismo como movimiento artístico, literario e intelectual es cosa de nuestro ayer, el siglo XIX. Antes el clasicismo francés se había extendido por Europa. La reacción fue el romanticismo. Sin embargo, el romanticismo en el mundo germánico, en Alemania, miró con intensidad hacia la Antigüedad clásica con gran concentración en las lenguas y la historia.

Nació la “ciencia de la Antigüedad”, Altertumswissenschaft, que tanto gusta decir a los expertos en aquellas cosas y que tan bien queda. Cuando hoy se consideran las lenguas clásicas se topa uno sin cesar con las novedades y aportaciones de una larga serie de sabios de aquel siglo con nombre alemán; Federico Augusto Wolf, Augusto Breckh, Godofredo Hermann. Un rico aficionado, Schliemann, descubrió las ruinas de Troya. Éste sí que era un romántico. Había quien, además, escribía cuentos, los hermanos Grimm. Uno de estos eruditos era E. Hübner, que hizo, entre otras, una gran recopilación de inscripciones latinas de Hispania. El resultado del esfuerzo es el tomo II del Corpus Inscriptionum Latinarum, al que nos referimos habitualmente con sus siglas, el C.I.L., monumentales tomos acometidos entonces sin ordenador. Pues bien, Hübner en su introducción al citado tomo, escrita lógicamente en latín, habla de la socordia y negligentia de los españoles. Con estos términos, nada condescendientes, el estudioso se refería al descuido en que por estas tierras yacían los tesoros del pasado. Estuvo algún tiempo en España y hablaba con conocimiento de causa. Aquí los románticos no se interesaron tanto por la Antigüedad clásica.

Tampoco hubiera valido de mucho. A Larra le dijeron “vuelva usted mañana” y se pegó un tiro.

Pero, para terminar, me quedo con el romanticismo de una pintada en grandes caracteres vista recientemente sobre los muros de canalización del caudaloso Po en su fluir manso a través de una bella ciudad italiana: Bimbo, ti amo da morire.

Aparte de esto y de entregarse en su tiempo libre a la holganza, a la que tiene especial afición, según declara, se ha interesado por los estudios de humanismo y pervivencia del mundo clásico.
