FANE EVENTS PRESENTS

SIR RANULPH FIENNES – LIVING DANGEROUSLY FRIDAY 22ND APRIL, 7.30PM TICKETS £33.50 PRINCESS ALEXANDRA AUDITORIUM Named by the Guinness Book of Records as ‘the world’s greatest living explorer’, Sir Ranulph Fiennes has spent his life in pursuit of extreme adventure; inspiring generations and risking life and limb in some of the most ambitious private expeditions ever undertaken. Amongst his many record-breaking achievements, he was the first to reach both Poles, the first to cross the Antarctic and Arctic Ocean, and the first to circumnavigate the world along its polar axis – his current goal is to become the first person in the world to cross both polar ice caps and climb the highest mountain on each of the seven continents. Both light-hearted and strikingly poignant, Living Dangerously offers a personal journey through Sir Ranulph’s life, spanning his early childhood and school misdemeanours, his army life, the Transglobe Expedition and his current Global Reach Challenge; making him a pioneer of exploration with an unparalleled story to tell.

PAAYARM

Take a journey into the curious, unexpected and downright surreal origins of the words we use every day. Susie will retell the adventures that lie hidden within such words as lasagne (involving a chamber pot) and bugbear (a terrorising monster), and explain such oddities as the silent h in ghost and the mysterious disappearance of kempt, gormful, and ruly (and yes, you really can be gruntled). She will look to the lexicon of the past to fill some of today’s linguistic gaps – such as the frenzied fit of tidying we all do just as guests are about to descend (that’s a scurryfunge). Alongside such forgotten stories you will hear Susie’s selection of the funniest moments from her 25 years on Countdown and 8 Out of 10 Cats Does Countdown, as well as some startling results from eavesdropping on a group of waiters. Each evening will include some of Susie’s favourite words from the towns and regions she visits, and she’ll be asking the audience for theirs. In fact, she’ll be welcoming any questions about word origins, usage irritations, the dreaded impact of Americanization, and the very future of our language in her very own ‘word surgery’.

PAM STANSFIELD PRESENTS

PROFESSOR ROBERT WINSTON - WHAT MAKES US HAPPY? WEDNESDAY 4TH MAY, 7.30PM ADULTS £19.00, CONCESSIONS £17.00 CHILDREN £11.00 PRINCESS ALEXANDRA AUDITORIUM What led to French philosopher Michel de Montaigne thanking fortune for the pain he suffered? Or why did Mahler apparently stop composing after his meeting in Holland with Sigmund Freud? Why was Alfred J Prufrock in T S Eliot’s poem so chronically depressed and suffering so much lack of self-esteem? Shall we ever really understand what makes us happy? To some extent, the ability to be happy is inherited, but social scientists have emphasised that various environmental influences – health, a stable society, economic advantages, play a major role. Professor Winston examines the role of brain imaging, hormone study, sexuality, child development, pharmacology and psychological research in understanding how science may help us be happier. Happy people tend to live longer, and recent research suggests we tend to get happier as we get older. Is this simply because we become more forgetful? Can we make ourselves happier and if so, will knowledge of brain function and how we might manipulate it give us more fulfilled lives?

THE FLOYD EFFECT – THE PINK FLOYD SHOW

NT LIVE: STRAIGHT LINE CRAZY

THURSDAY 26TH MAY, 7PM ADULT £15.00, CHILD £10.00 YARM PUPIL £8.00 FRIARAGE THEATRE

There are tribute bands and then there are tribute bands… With members who have worked with the likes of David Bowie, Janet Jackson, Jon Bon Jovi, Brian Adams and Keith Emerson, and others who have performed on Broadway and in the Royal Albert Hall, The Floyd Effect isn’t just a bunch of enthusiasts who love the music of Pink Floyd, it’s a band of the highest calibre that loves the music of Pink Floyd.

Ralph Fiennes (Antony & Cleopatra) leads the cast in David Hare’s (Skylight) blazing account of the most powerful man in New York, a master manipulator whose legacy changed the city forever.

Rightly renowned for the remarkable accuracy with which it performs the Pink Floyd canon The Floyd Effect faithfully recreates the music and intensity of a Pink Floyd concert without recourse to backing tracks, racks of computers, or other technological wizardry. Every note that you hear is played and sung by the band, making each concert a genuine ‘live’ event; powerful and emotional.

Broadcast live from the Bridge Theatre in London, Nicholas Hytner directs this exhilarating new play.

Sit back and enjoy The Floyd Effect as the band takes you on a journey through the music of Pink Floyd. Unless you were there the first time around, it was never as real as this. Age Suitability: Not suitable for under 12s

PRINCESS ALEXANDRA AUDITORIUM

Macbeth by William Shakespeare, adapted by Chris Connaughton “By the pricking of my thumbs, something wicked this way comes.” This all female, 3 hander version of the well-known (and very gruesome) Shakespeare classic will tour to theatres, community venues, village halls and schools this Autumn. Adapted by writer and director Chris Connaughton and directed by NTC Artistic Director Louis Roberts, this will be a streamlined and very physical version of the original piece and performed in NTC’s unique, fast paced and extremely physical style. The show will feature original music and will largely be told from the perspective of the witches. Exploring ideas of manipulation through the media and other external forces, the show will include all the grim, gory, and grisly elements that everyone loves and expects from the tale of Macbeth. Perfect for those not particularly familiar with Shakespeare’s work and diehard fans alike.

The Wainstones Cup returns to the Princess Alexandra Auditorium once again this year, bringing you some of the finest brass bands from across the country. Each band plays a selection of solos, marches and a technical test piece of their choice as they compete for the Wainstones Cup and a share of the prize fund.
